"Friends" had episodes where the ladies would wear bride dresses out of their frustration of not finding husbands.
On a side note, I always found it a crap of a show, and saw it occasionally because it helped with game chat to break the ice (this is when you all make jokes about me, yay!). I came to find why I found it as shit when it ended: out of options, ladies took the 2 beta orbiters. And the only "chad" was obviously the dumb one. Also, was the one who started good and ended bad and poor. And they almost married him to the single mom. It was bad propaganda, mostly.

The first time I got engaged-- you can read the long version if you want to get the novel-- it was to a woman who threatened to commit suicide if I didn't ask her to marry me.
And I'll tell you-- she could whip-up real tears with an Oscar-grade performance. I think she did this maybe three times, maybe one of which was over the phone. Me, I didn't want to hang up the phone on a person who claimed that they were suicidal. It seemed unconscionable to do so. So I spent a lot of time, on each occasion, talking her down, saying things like "I'm not going to vanish tomorrow", and so on. But, due to whatever demons were howling in her skull, she was really really super 10000% adamant that I needed to ask her to marry her.
At one point in one of these conversations, I said to her: "Look, if marriage is so important to you, why can't YOU propose to me??" there was a long silence, and then I added "Women can do that nowadays, you know?? You can vote, you can work jobs, you can ask people to marry you!!! Right? So if it's SO GODDAMNED IMPORTANT TO YOU, why can't YOU propose to ME??"
Her response: "Because it doesn't mean anything if I say it."
...
"Huh?" ... "Wait, say that again?"
"It doesn't count if I say it. I won't know if it's for real unless you do it."
"Wait-- does your opinion not count??"
"I have to know it's for real!" She insisted. "That's why you have to do it?"
"So you threaten to commit suicide?? Don't you think that's arm-twisting?"
"BUT I'LL KILL MYSELF IF YOU DON'T!!"
"But why can't you propose to me if you absolutely MUST have it when you want it?"
"BECAUSE I CAN'T!!!!!" SOB SOB SOB.
It was insane. Looking back on it, it was absolutely, completely batshit nuts-o.
And when I finally caved-- she could fight hysterically for days-- my proposal wasn't good enough for her. It wasn't, like, satisfying. I had to beg for the Fair Maiden's Hand in Holy Matrimony. Some days later, she said to me that my proposal wasn't SINCERE enough, so I had to do the whole thing all over again. Except, this time I needed to provide a more lavish setting, be more obsequious, down on bended knee, the whole thing. Or else it wasn't REAL.
Okay, I said-- if it had to be genuine, then I had to be the one who picked exactly when and how I should do it. That's the only "genuine" option. Someone can't pick and choose how fate happens to them, right?
Well, that only set-off more hysterical sobbing.
Which meant I had to talk her down again. It was like handling nitroglycerin or something. The slightest jolt could blow my arms off.
Anyway, I won't talk about how each proposal went, because it's just too humiliating, but I STILL wouldn't get down on bended knee for her the second time either. If that disappointed her, then I guess insincerity is the price you pay for forcing "fate" to happen to you on your schedule.
You can't demand to control something which needs to be spontaneous, and you can't force something that needs to be genuine. It's like pointing a gun at someone and mandating their happiness, it just doesn't work.
And, in an unexpected turn of events, she didn't like how I carried-out the engagement. It had to be on bended knee. I was all "But you ain't royalty. Why should I get on my knees?" Which wasn't a good thing to say.
Plus, her diamond had to be bigger.

As you said, you can’t put a gun to someone’s head and then expect them to be sincere although that was the overarching theme of the interrogation in 1984. Winston had to be tortured into sincerely believing that 2+2=5.
Regarding the diamond, I’d have happily said that, like the proposal if she was telling you how to do it, she should give you the money to buy it but YOU would get credit for buying it (meaning if she broke off the engagement, it would be yours.) Otherwise, YOU should have a right to do it as you please.
That said, pardon me if I engage in some locker room bragging: It’s a funny story: I “proposed’ to my wife using my sister’s old wedding ring she had discarded after her divorce. I didn’t have a chance to get on my knee because my (future) wife said: “So, are you going to propose to me, OR NOT?” So I said, “Here’s the ring”.
She then began to pester me to buy her a diamond engagement ring. I’m culturally savvy to know that Ukrainians didn’t have a DeBeers advertisement founded tradition of buying diamond engagement rings but she said “I want one anyway.”
So I took her to a shopping mall in Krakow and the Polish girls in the store asked for my budget and I gave out a lavish $250. She was PISSED that the salesgirls stuck to my budget. I should have gone back and given them gifts in hindsight. For fun, I got on my knees and presented it to her and she said she was embarrassed and to cut it out.
She later got a pawn shop replacement for the gold band because she didn’t want my sisters’ bad karma and THEN about 10 years later got a more expensive diamond ring, but still wears the $250 one because she doesn’t want to worry about losing it. The more expensive one stays in the safe or when she’s going to a party.

Its a way of rationalising the three.
Its a tragedy when a woman fails to launch and get wifed up into a full woman. However you spin, it is is a failure of expectations and ambitions in almost every case. A desire to make up for this can be passed off and made fun by making a satire of the farce.
