I always assumed that the reason rich men go for rich women is that they'll likely lose less in a divorce than they would with a broke woman. Though I have no idea if this is true.

I'm thinking it's true based upon my own experiences as a bourgeois parent: Private schools, summer camps, etc. are expensive. A true indicator of the middle class. If you're rich, you can send the kids to boarding school and that's a whole different thing (check out Kevin Costner. In the middle spot, though, having a working wife is essential. Without her income, although significantly less than mine, we wouldn't be able to afford all the stuff we have.

While divorces have often resulted in the classic scenario of the ex-wife milking the kids as primary custodian and getting all the money while the ex-hubby lives in his car, recent reforms thanks to MRAs have increasingly resulted in joint custody and it's left the hoes mad. "Will someone please think of the children!" they scream.
Yeah, it means that if such women get divorced, THEIR standard of living truly goes down immensely. Here's an example:
Friend-of-mine's wife worked at Safeway Grocery in checkout. Made decent money as such but she blew it drinking while he was at home looking after the kids. He asked her to cut back and she served him up with divorce papers thinking she'd get that divorce lottery winnings.
He came to court armed and ready with DUI's, him knowing all the teachers and doctor's names, and so on. Even in this biased court system, they got joint custody meaning: no alimony, no child-support.
She was now stuck on her own paying all the bills and doing all the housework for herself in her own place. She offered him a reconciliation which he rejected which I think was a mistake (more on this later). She had to cut down on the drinking and even did most of the childcare after that if only to maintain the dual custody arrangement otherwise he'd probably get sole custody.
She took out her anger on the kids though. She poisoned them saying he broke up the marriage and so on with his daugher now an obese blue haired lesbian.

That said, it's a real curse when you think about it. There's a mine field on both sides:
What are the odds a rich woman will be suitable for marriage considering hypergamy, being career-focused, etc? For that matter, how many rich women will actually be as comparatively attractive as the rich man considering differences in what men and women find attractive (and the fact that there just aren't many rich women)? Probably not very good.
But then on the other side, how many broke, attractive women would be willing to sign a prenup necessary to protect the rich man from the higher divorce settlement he'd have to pay vs marrying a wealthy woman?
Celebrity men who want to marry are in a real pickle when you think about it.

@throwaway415 Kevin Costner's wife signed a prenup but came after him for the "child" support but that's on him, quite frankly, for setting himself up by allowing her to spend money on maids, personal assistants and so on as "primary" parent. He should have done that hiring himself or had the assistant do it, who reported to him, so they'd get joint custody.

Actually, rich people in general, men and women alike, tend to be attractive due to nutrition and access to dental care. What I found strange in the states was the awful attitude women overall had. In university, I asked out a plump, working class girl who worked at the cafeteria. Looking back, I"m glad she had an attitude because if I had fallen for her, I'd be a lot less interesting. That's what makes "passport bros" happen: Foreign women are not as openly anti-male as women in the states. Yes, they are hypergamist and masterialistic, but they aren't stupid.
Looking back, the corporate nuns I dated weren't really all that bad. Yes, they insisted I pay for the dinner date and put up with a few minor predictable shit tests but overall, they at least weren't obese or had face piercings. The problem is that the men who did ultimately just allowed them to raise the bar year after year until we have what we do now, like "shrinkflation".

I'm not even sure that they are looking for a rich man. What women crave the most is an unsuitable man. Suitability gives them the ick.
If it was money that they wanted, then they would be all chasing after rich men. They are not. You are confusing what they do when they realies that they have utterly failed at life, at around 30-35 ...that is when they pivot to trying to find a man with a high net worth to 'settle down' with. Settling down, do them, means marrying and not having sex.
Sex and desire for women is reserved for men that are unsuitable.

Back in the 1980's, a woman friend told me that it was fashionable for women to say they didn't want to marry and have kids. Ick! They were "cool" and "independent" and "hard to get".
So my point being they were not "chasing" after beta bucks, even alpha bucks, because that wasn't "hip". I tried to mentor a friend's daughter on basic game to land a decent looking and wealthy man and she said she wasn't interested. That isn't the point, she largely said. She wants to be sleeping beauty and the paradigm is the man making "effort".
If they do "chase", it will be for "tingles" and that's sex with hot guys, of course. Not relationships.
At 30 or so, the clock ticking means they'll make things "easier" for the "chase". Perhaps they'll join a dating app. Note that back in the 1980's, few women lowered themselves even in their 30's to do such a thing.
By then, they are accustomed to only sleeping with or chasing after hot guys so they are more likely to compromise on money or education standards than looks out of habit. Perhaps if (ick!) he only has a bachelors degree! Or.. maybe he went to an (ick!) STATE university. Maybe a police captain without a diploma because he can fix parking tickets.

I posted the 2nd article because the guy's mother died a year later and he's inheriting $4.5 billion.
This reminds me of my crazy redheaded exgf who told me that when she was a teenager, her mother got her matched with an 80 year old mormon oligarch multi millionaire. She refused (like something out of Fiddler on the Roof). Finally, she came around and said yes and it turns out the guy had died a week earlier. She laughed and regretted her foolishness.
She's also the typical entitled pretty feminist who wants men to be the traditional provider.
