When the cat, who never paid a penny into the house pisses off next door to eat their food before coming back to crap in your flower beds and then brings you home a hunting trophy that it expects you to deal with, everyone just says "That's cats doing what cats do". Men don't get the same slack.

@First-light Whenever I see the cat lady meme, I want to respond that cats are great for lonely people because they make great pets: They're low maintenance, interesting, and (usually) affectionate and appreciative. Yes, some are lousy and standoffish but that's true of anyone including dogs and humans. Most, in my experience, may take some time to warm up to you but they are affectionate and appreciative.
There are millions of cats euthanized/year so the more homes for them, the better with even prison outreach programs where the prisoners become better behaved and the cats are happy, win-win. Yes, sometimes a cat can be harmed (by the women, rarely by the prisoners) but for the most part, cats are better off in homes rather than being euthanized.

I don't want you to think I don't like cats. Its fair to say that I don't feel humans have as much in common with cats as dogs -humans and dogs are hunters that operate in small groups, cats are a solitary hunter. Sometimes they can be aloof and entitled but they can be affectionate too. Often I pass them hunting when I run at dawn. They are waiting patiently in by the grass at the edge of a road, focused on the grass. I sometimes actually say sorry to them under my breath because I get what they are feeling, focusing on their hunt and then I run past maybe scaring the mice. When I run the country lanes at dawn spooking deer in the fields I often think how I would actually enjoy ambush hunting hunting more but here I am stuck with the lesser pleasure of running because it takes less time out of the day and is good for me while cats are having more fun.
At the moment I can't see myself getting another cat but if I was lonely and wanted a low maintenance pet, I could well get a cat. We are all better off with something to care for. We just like to joke about the cat ladies because in the end cats are low maintenance and don't demand too much from you, which suits a certain sort of woman who wants to care for something but not too much.

Solitary women have nurturing instincts that go haywire with no outlet. Cats and small dogs become victims of their obsessive "mother love". Karen loves her poodle more than she's ever loved a baby or husband. In my town there is literally a pet dentist, and locally we have saunas and "pampering" resorts for pets. My guess is there are no men there.
On the other hand women are more likely than men to abuse their own children. The archetypal cat lady has 10 cats all mewing for food at any given time because she enjoys starving and controlling them. Many women want to dominate and control men, and pets become the outlet here too.
The point is that pets (either cats or dogs) fulfill both sets of instincts for lonely women.
