Summary: The exception to the rule does not invalidate the rule.
A common theme of TRP is the use of heuristics as teaching principles. These heuristics are essentially rules that serve as guidelines for behavior, with the full understanding that while exceptions to those rules do exist, they are still true most of the time. A good example is AWALT. And the reality is that if something is true 90% of the time, then the best approach is to assume it is true all the time and deal with the exceptions as they arise. Heuristics enable us to appropriately respond to the world around us of most of the time … and as such they serve a useful purpose.
The alternative view in the Blue Pill world (or what you often see argued on PurplePillDebate) is since those exceptions exist, then rules are silly. Yes yes, they say, women often do X or Y, but sometimes they don’t, and so any such rule is useless. Sure, most women like dominant, muscular men, but my sister’s cousin’s girlfriend’s mom doesn’t, so there … The BP world view extends this to all sorts of phenomena, from dating to raising children to gender identity. Theirs is a world of exceptions and special snowflakes, half-time orange slices and participation trophies.
However, the exception to the rule does not invalidate the rule.
The way of men is one of understanding the importance of principles. That mastery of the world around us begins with understanding it. That even if we can’t understand it 100% accurately at all times, does not mean we accede defeat to never understanding it.
To do so would be to be ruled by the exceptions.
A man cannot conquer the world, nor the things he desires, by eschewing principles and embracing the exceptions. Mastery is not the pursuit of some unassailable perfect truth, but of optimal action. And as any man who steps foot within TRP quickly learns, the optimal action is often counter-intuitive … the push when you want to pull, the stoic reaction in the face of her furious shit test. Laughing when others think you should be angry. Putting your head down to get back to work after failure.
The exceptions may exist, but never let them be your Master.
The truly ironic thing about TRP is that really what we are teaching men is how to become the exception to the rule. For that is a man who truly transcends social norms, lives for his own purposes, builds and creates, and pushes humanity forward (a Nietzsche “superman” of sorts). A man who draws others to him. A man that women, coincidentally, want to fuck.
This is no doubt why we emphasize the Laws of Power around here, particularly #38: Think for yourself, but behave as others do
We often think of ourselves as living in a world dictated by rules, but the reality is that is not exactly true. For the rules themselves are dictated by the exceptions - the rich, the powerful, those who break the mold, the 1%. And as such, any TRP man should strive to break the mold as well … to use the rules to interact with the world around him, but to be the exception himself.
We all know the allure of things that seem exceptional – the unicorns, one-itis, the myth of “the one”. It is built deep into our human psychology to respond to rare things, novel things, adventurous things. For example, in terms of sexual strategy, social status and frame are simply ways to sub-communicate to women that the normal rules do not apply to you. When she gets the tingles, she is simply responding to your exceptionality.
It is no coincidence then that is women and feminized men who are most strongly pushing the Blue Pill world view … for it is the exception which they truly desire. In reality all the BP talk about dating advice and gender fluidity is actually just a projection of those deepest desires. When she is telling you to just be yourself and follow the rules, while sexually identifying as a 3rd-century she-male centaur or an independent modern womenz, you have to read between the lines. They are acting like the exception, while daring you to become one. To break the rules. Because they don’t really want to be one, they want you to BE A MAN. They want those exceptions, the ones that break the mold … they want to be chosen by them. Ruled by them. Only then can they finally embrace their true feminine nature.
Become the exception, and you become their master. Just remember, even you don’t invalidate the rule: most men are blue pill, while most women reflect red pill truisms through their actions. Some things never change.
Most women I date these days tell me: “I’ve never dated anyone like you”, or something to that effect. That, my friends, is the goal.

cxwong 9y ago
Bit late to the party but just wanted to say that in a world where "everyone is an individual", a rule which was right even only 30% of the time is of great value to me. If I could accurately know how 3 in 10 people will behave over the random chaos of individualism, then that is a decent edge.
redpillschool Admin 9y ago
I see a lot of people here talk about exceptions to the rule as well. For instance, when a guy describes a relationship gone wrong, I often see the response "well you dated a crazy, avoid those," as though men often get into relationships knowingly with a crazy bitch and crossing their fingers.
Even if a guy learns perfect RP game, and manages to get a good LTR going with a woman that adores him, she is not an exception to the rule. In fact, that's dangerous thinking- that he found the one good woman in a sea of awful ones.
The truth is, you can curtail a certain amount of their behavior with the strategies learned here. But AWALT doesn't sleep. Your woman is like that too, given the right circumstances. Just because you've got a good frame doesn't mean she won't walk all over you if she manages to break it.
AWALT doesn't just mean most women are like that and this is a generalization that doesn't apply to all women. AWALT means that all women have the propensity and instinct to be like that, and it's up to circumstances and timing to avoid those behaviors.
Just because you think you found a snowflake that respects you, doesn't mean she's treated her last boyfriend with the same respect. She'll still be a woman to other people, you just managed to gain her respect.
GrowlingBears 9y ago
Perfect. Statistically trivial outliers potentially question the integrity of your sampling method but do not invalidate the analytical methodology. This is my "you done stuck it in crazy again, run faster and duck this time" approach.
And... Respect. You can not control a women with pain or suffering, they only respond to fear usually by revoking their sense of security, dread game as we call it.
harsheehorshee 9y ago
Doesn't trp use this to derail Asian male issues too?
CopperFox3c 9y ago
People like to use the exceptions as excuses ... so yes we do. We are not into people making excuses, because they are essentially self-limiting beliefs. Life is all about overcoming challenges.
fenghsui 9y ago
Awesome to see this covered here. Yet, the idea that the rules are dictated by the exceptions is mostly wrong, and certainly not Nietzschean. It is the weak, the slaves, who are enamored of rules. In the beginning of social order, rules are set in place to restrict the power of the strong and smart through agreement and the advantage of numeracy. The story of the evolution of society is a story of the progressive takeover of the weak.
J_AsapGem 9y ago
Humans love to follow a leader they don't actually want to lead, they crave someone to do something different " Because they don’t really want to be one, they want you to BE A MAN."
Sometimes in the club you would see everyone in a corner waiting for something to happen, then it does that one guy gets on the dance floor and starts enjoying himself, then some either tell themselves " i wish i can join in " or some actually follow because they were waiting for that leader to do something different
Rommel0502 9y ago
This is just shining light on the fallacy of induction from the exception. Its probably the single most abused fallacy Ive seen on internet forums.
dudeguymanthesecond 9y ago
1) People are more likely to initially entertain and then recall stories that reinforce their preconceptions.
2) Rules like AWALT are predicated upon behaviors that tend to be controversial. So people will generally be more likely to remember those behaviors solely because they are interesting. And the person displaying said behavior will probably end up being counted multiple times if tracked on an anecdotal basis, because they behave in ways that make people initially welcome them into a new social circle, and then cause so much trouble they're ejected from that circle, probably doomed to repeat that same cycle many times over.

WhiteKnight49 9y ago
Almost everyone hates being generalized, it is anathema to narcissism and the belief that one is special...but I will admit that women seem to particularly hate it.
My favorite is (being tall), sometimes a girl in the group will mention how they like tall guys (shocker), and then someone says, of course you do, all girls like all guys. The pursing of the lips and general agitation that they aren't unique amuses me every time.

there's this thing called expected value. you multiply the probability of something happening times the magnitude of that happening. as you do any probabilistic activity over and over again, you will approach the expected value. expected value allows you to take exceptions to rules into account without throwing out rules. this is how insurance and casinos and 10 million other things in life work. the probability of you getting into a terrible car accident that causes a shitload of damage is pretty low, but the magnitude of damage that it causes is catastrophic, so people are happy to pay a bit to have an insurance policy. with casinos, the house has a positive expected value on every transaction, even though there's a chance they'll lose, so they are perfectly fine dumping jackpots every now and then. at the end of the day over a billion transactions, they're still up.
nothing you ever do is a sure thing, so start factoring expected values into your life. they allow you to account for the exceptions without dismissing rules. so sure, you can occasionally stick your dick in crazy, but 2 times out of 10, you get in and out perfectly fine, 6 of 10 you have to have nonsensical fights because you looked at her cat the wrong way, 1 out of 10, she's screaming you raped her, and the other 1, she bites your dick off. when you add all that up, you have a 2 in 10 of getting laid (let's assign this a value of +5), a 6 in 10 for dealing with her crazy (-10), a 1 in 10 of false rape accusations (-1000), and 1 in 10 of losing your dick (-1000). expected value of sticking your dick in crazy is then effectively 52 + (-10)6 + -1000 + -1000... or -2050. you might get away with it every now and then, but as you do it more, you will approach the expected value in your experiences.
don't lose your dick. use expected value.

A lot of men need to read this post.
"Don't go around telling other guys not to cohabitate! I have been living with my LTR for 6 months now and everything is great!"
"Don't go around saying not to smoke weed or do drugs! I smoke weed 5 times a day while blowing coke and make $500k a year and have 5 houses and a Ferarri and have 12 girls sucking my dick every night while I fuck 12 other women!"
"Don't go around saying not to stick your dick in crazy! I just fucked a rainbow haired feminazi and everything turned out fine!"
"A girl with a full sleeve tattoo isn't a red flag! My LTR has both arms covered in tattoos and she is great!"
"It's still perfectly OK to return to your ex and fuck her and/or make her your plate! I do this all the time and have not fallen back into oneitis! Don't tell others to ghost and ignore them!"
GrowlingBears 9y ago
People want to believe that which makes them happy and feel safe. And, an idiot and his money are quickly parted. We are idiots, women are the circus masters. Either stop going to the circus or realize it's full of predators and act accordingly.
RPFlame 9y ago
Most people fail to understand that when I say "all X is Y" I mean that "X is so frequently true that I'd much rather use Z as my default response than regret it".
So when I say "all lawyers are assholes" and some lawyer posts underneath "hey, I'm not an asshole" people think they just disproved my claim.
But the rule's goal is to dictate my behavior. I'm generating rules to live by, I'm not doing scientific research. I'm not doing physics, chemistry or mathematics.

Most people tend to accept anecdotal stories before they accept hard evidence.
It's funny that the exception to the rule is usually the story people choose to accept. Probably because it's the more comfortable fantasy and it avoids the facing truth and reality.
good_guy_submitter 9y ago
Humans are wired to accept comfortable fantasy instead of reality though. We've done it for probably hundreds of thousands of years.
The people that accepted comfortable fantasy became tribe leaders and with the aid of religion, very powerful men. Those who rejected the bullshit and wanted to be realists were exiled or killed. Fitting in with the tribe has always been more important than living true, until now, but that is only because we can be reasonably independent of other people and still survive in our current civilization.
Literally everyone does this about different things until someone smacks us over the head with facts. We're stupid humans and even with hard evidence in front of us we have trouble letting go of the easy no-effort answers that comfort us by relying on fate or luck or chance or whatever. Problem is a lot of us are just too fucking stupid to change. I have family I can't even talk to because they are too proud to open their mind to anything that challenges their current beliefs about both women and religion.
If you're here in theredpill it's because you're looking for answers, maybe some of us even want to change, but even then we can still be too fucking stupid to do so.
SrPildoraRoja 9y ago

felipebarroz 9y ago
Anecdotal stories are more exciting to be noticed.
"Rich Family send their son to the best private school in the state, he grows up doing exercises and eating healthy, expensive food. He was able to study Laws in Harvard and now he's a sucessful tax lawyer". Well, that's a hell of a boring story.
"Poor guy grows up in the bad part of town, studied in a shithole and shared classes with cocaine users. He then become a waiter at McDonalds, but stayed up late at night to study by himself. He was able to overcome all possibilities and became a sucessful tax layer". There we go, a great, exciting story.
We like to tell and hear anecdotal stories that confirms exceptions.
triclops41 9y ago
Humans all think anecdotally by nature. You have to be trained/train yourself to think otherwise, and why it remains rare. That is why anecdotes are powerful.
[deleted] 9y ago
The same is true with success. People like to idolize the get rich quick schemes while dismissing the vast majority of successful people that embraced the grind.
[deleted] 9y ago
Another example is people trying to hold on to the belief that the guys who were jocks and popular in high school and college or whatever turn out to be major losers while the nerds that sucked all end up super rich and crawling in pussy later on.
StoicCrane 9y ago
The "Revenge of the Nerds" fantasy on a large scale. Mainstream corporate intluence is well responsible for the social conventions and androgynous mayhem rampant today.
ChanmanVXIIX 9y ago
What do you mean hard evidence? As in stats? Because most teachings here are someone that figured it out first, a lot of trial and error and common sense ;it's at the end anecdotal evidence too. Like you said people choose to believe the story that's easier to swallow.
lietruth 9y ago
What I mean is there is enough evidence in support of one side to develop a universal consensus and understanding.
Despite the sometimes crass terminology and dogma of TRP. Many of the teachings here are actually based in evolutionary psychology & biological mating practices in humans.

Nothing wrong with trashy whores - as long as you know they're a trashy whore and treat them accordingly. It's when people see something and pretend it's something else that trouble ensues. Slutty girls serve their purpose, and often are good people by many metrics, just not good LTR/Wife/Mother material.
Returnofthemack3 9y ago
yeah, seriously. If a girl has a tattoo or two, and they're not in ridiculous places, it's usually not a big deal. They'll even usually admit it was a mistake and they were yougn and stupid. But the girls that get covered in them? No way man. I've known many women with lots of noticeable tats, and while they might be fun, they are not long term dating material. I dont give a fuck what anyone says

I hope this post gets stickied because it is profound and clever. I love your point about heuristics and the exceptions. We at TRP use heuristics whilst seeking to become the exception. It is ironic and paradoxical, like most of life's profound truths (quantum physics, zen, eastern and western mysticism/ philosophy). I think you are really onto something here. It is not an easy subject to flesh out or verbalise, but this is a good starting point. I bet this post will resonate deeply in some ways with u/GayLubeOil and u/NeoreactionSafe
NeoreactionSafe 9y ago
Amused Mastery is enjoying the things you already know.
Absolute Truth is unknowable and if you wait to know everything before acting you will never do anything.
So his point is correct... you go with your gut and sometimes that means doing things opposite to the expected.
Katavasis 9y ago
Most people like the exceptions, because it involves a story/anecdote,a personal experience that they can identify with. The horror here is the possibllity of said people, innately know the truths(?) we advocate, but choose to ignore them. What does it mean?
They ignore their own experiences and perception to indulge in 'movie' like lives.Lives that holywood/media/feminist agenda etc, have outlined for many years. This goes beyond sexual strategies for sure. Iti sn't they can't handle the bitter pill.I am afraid it goes deeper. It's the system they use to process information.
Think of it as mail.Information that goes straight to spam,is not information received. It is called talking to a wall. The listener uses such a strong filter, you can't even 'penetrate' his conciousness.
The average guy is used to gain information through a videocamera.Often built around a fictional story. They don't 'create' opinions ,they take ready, prepackaged logical models, built by someone's elses agenda. So,when information that contradicts and 'bugs' system, the system either breaks or spits out false data, aka irrational bullshit.

The irony is that you believe you're making yourself the exception when you're not, and thus you've deluded yourself, ironically, into making yourself a kind of special snowflake you so despise. The BP is not the dominate world view. Just open your eyes. Trump is going to be president in the US (an unabashed alpha who was caught on tape literally bragging about groping women), and virtually all major motion pictures and television shows (excluding quirky comedies) present the alpha male as the par excellence male - think of the James Bond's, the Jason Borne's, and the Tony Stark's - all asshole, confident, womanizers. For Christ sake, virtually all leading men in Hollywood are white males, not skinny limp dick dweebs who major in Art History. You know why? Because these industries understand that the majority of people prefer these qualities. It isn't some sort of god damn secret. It's been like that since the inception of visual mediums. It's very transparent, and you're an god damned idiot to believe in some feminist/BP conspiracy in the media or in academia.
mdcrubengonza 9y ago
There's nuances to each on of your examples' characters. Tony Stark, for example, is a complete bitch in Captain America's Civil War. Although absent from your post, J. Cole, with his hard-hitting, almost 100% red-pill lyrics in "No Role Modelz" is another example that a man can appear to be red-pill, yet only really benefit from it with the illusion, while routinely pedestalizing his oneitis in all of his other songs. Trump, himself, has had to apologize to his wife for the language displayed during his taped discussion on grabbing women by the pussy. While this might not necessarily disqualify him as an alpha, we're all men and are all prone to the rewards and risks of success and failure from the proper application and misapplication of Red Pill philosophy.
redpillbanana 9y ago
I've been on TRP for quite a few years and it's great to see the rare post, like this one, that explains things the rules in a way that gives me new insight. Well done.
Many people, while on the road to mastery, see successful people breaking the rules and they figure that the fastest path to success is to be a rule-breaker. They don't realize that in order to break the rules, one needs to master them first. One needs to know the full set of rules and why each rule is in place, how much wiggle room is in each rule, what the downside is for breaking the rule, and when/how often an exception occurs.
The heuristics of TRP are no different. If you're still on the road to mastery, you're probably best served by staying within the guidelines. If you break the rules, you might just get lucky, and then you can post about how you didn't follow the TRP guidelines and it still worked out wonderfully for you, much like the grandmother who smoked for her entire life and still lived to 100. More likely you'll end up a statistic like the millions of smokers who die of lung cancer.

To a certain extent, I agree. I remember my ex kept using ego-strokes to reel me into the already dead relationship. So be wary of that.
Also, remember the "...for now" rule of thumb:

[deleted] 9y ago
There comes a point when you can believe it, that is when they start coming back. Women from your past text you, they want more, women only do that shit for special guys. That is when you can believe it.
Stythe 9y ago
The point you make about the exceptions to the rules creating the rules is a key point. The best way to know how to skirt the rules is to know how they apply. The only way to know how they apply is to understand them and that is going to require experiencing them. Only once you understand the game can you find ways to make your own rules to it.
Stationarity 9y ago
Women justify their slutty behavior by saying "why should guys have all the fun", without realizing most guys are incel and only top tier dudes are whoring it up. It's called apex fallacy.
AbstractTallen 9y ago
So following this line of thinking AWALT isn't entirely accurate then?
Ozymanberg 9y ago
It never claims to be an absoulte. Obviously, not every single women ever is exactly the same. What AWALT means is that the base biology of a female human is almost always going to be the same, i.e. get turned on more by social status than just looks, etc.
It's like saying AMALT because most men are horny a lot of the time and would fuck with most average looking girls if given the oppurtinity. Which would be true and any exception to that rule (gays[and even then, gays get just as horny as straight men, so this isn't even really an "exception"], asexuals) is just that, an exception.
triclops41 9y ago
Another way to conceptualize it is to differentiate between "you should always believe AWALT without exception" and "you consistently underrate AWALT and overrate exceptions to it, and therefore drilling AWALT into your skull at every opportunity will shift your analysis to become more accurate". Only simpletons believe the first version, but beginners don't want to admit/understand the second version applies to them, so AWALT remains the best heuristic.

This happened a ton with the thread I posted about being social a little while ago. And this is where the altar of science gets ridiculous. On what grounds are we living in a video game?

You know, when I left theistic dogma I thought the grass was greener on the other side.
. . . I was wrong.

This is a really good post that lays down why exceptions are not invalidating the rule. I think one thing that is misunderstood about the opposite view is not that exceptions always invalidate the rule, but rather there there's not just one way all people are. There's an alternative way, a set of patterns, to describe others. We're talking about people who defy RP basics like "preferring how reality is perceived over reality". To understand exceptions don't invalidate the rule is one thing, but certain exceptions are certainly more powerful than others. It's good to deepen your understanding of the exceptions. Think about it, an exceptional man doesn't deserve anything but an exceptional women. And are exceptions created or born or a combination of both? Apparently can be created in men, but for women I believe just the same. Expect the generalization but recognize what is exceptional to you and have it on your radar.

please excuse me gents for being dim but isnt law #38 as written above basically being weak for fear of other people disagreeing with you? i must be wrong so presumably 'always behave like others' has a longer goal that i fail to miss? why should you give a shit what the majority think of your behaviour if youre being sincere?

I believe it is explained in the rule that you should be appearing as others, but your actions are only for your own good?

I concur with everything /u/SkorchZang said.
True power is wielded in the shadows, not in the open. You have to be able to blend in, even if you think differently.

That's why it's such a good "law" to keep in mind. It stops you from having this futile thought-process, by pointing out that it is often wise to not be entirely sincere, and to pay the closest attention to your surroundings instead of only considering your own self as you wear that adorably reckless heart on your sleeve.
It's valuable as the art of mimicry, controlled ability to blend in anywhere, with different people from different walks of life.
Nevertheless, there have already been some aspergerburgers made from this well-intentioned "law" or advice, and a few people have been turning it into an absolute of some kind. "Always behave like the others" would be a very silly law of power, that any effective man would only chuckle at.

Could do without the use of "aspergerburgers", but other than that, an interesting post.

Sure, but I am seeing a lot of exceptions to the rule lately.
Maybe it takes time for the exception to become the rule.
