The deal with the Army is, it's not easy, sometimes it's actually hard, and a lot of times it's boring. But the advantage is, a steady income and (most importantly) when you retire you collect benefits for life! That sounds like a good deal to me. Don't try to talk me out of it.
Of course, the Army desires young men - like, 18 year old men (gross! the army is super creepy!) and the Army expects these men to serve for 20 years before retiring. So, they want you to work while you're young enough to actually do the work - basically, 18 to 38, then they'll support you from 38 on.
But here's the thing: I'm already 38. I spent 18-38 playing Army. I played video games, I did airsoft and paintball - that kind of thing. At this stage of my life, I'm obviously no longer interested in a lot of the "army stuff" like PT or marching or deploying to anywhere (I do love to travel though).
No, I never got a steady income from playing Army. Why do you ask?
Anyway, I'm going to head down to the recruiter's office and sign up, and I'll explain that I expect to go right to the "retirement" phase.
UPDATE: you would not believe how rude the recruiter was! He objectified me by asking my height and weight! He laughed when I said I wouldn't be doing any of the "army stuff" - even though I explained to him that I had played army for years, and that the past was the past and I was a different person now. I told him that he should feel lucky that I chose to enlist with his army in the end.
There are plenty of other armies. I used to get tons of recruitment offers when I was 18. I know my worth.
UPDATE 2: well it seems the Marines hate civilians too! The recruiter told me I was too old! I snapped back, "if you can't accept me at 38, then you don't deserve me at 18!" He said I could possibly get a job driving a truck. I explained to him that I have my own car and it's my world. We come as a package deal.
UPDATE 3: I emailed the Navy a list of my requirements for military service. For starters, I expect to be commander of Seal Team 6. I know my worth and wont settle. No response. They just ghosted me. Where are all the good armies??
UPDATE 4: I've set up a new subreddit for generals such as myself. /r/civilianRecruitmentStrategy - we aren't going to let recruiters mistreat us by asking us to drive trucks or denying us battalion command. We know our worth. We're not going to waste time with LVMs (low-value militaries) like the US military.
This is mostly a self-improvement subreddit. We will talk a lot about "promotion" (leveling up) because HVMs want high-value recruits. So we're going to make ourselves generals and admirals because we know our worth.

Dude, this is the funniest shit-post ever.

lmfao, bravo.
variedpageants 4y ago
lol thanks. I've been toying with another one of these based on an analogy to student loans.
With a real loan, you get the value (an education) up front, and then you pay money over years or decades. It reminds me of the original deal that was marriage. A man gets value up-front in the form of sexual and reproductive access, but then he's expected to pay for it though many decades of providing for his wife.
Women today say, "I'm going to give my youth (when the sex has the most value) away for free, but I still expect you to pay your full end over decades"
So what I've got in mind is a university offering a student loan ...but you don't actually get a degree. Degrees are given away for free to other people. Then you come along and pay.
Still playing around with it in my head though. It has to incorporate all the typical rhetoric ("I know my worth" type stuff) in order to be quality satire.
denver_coder99 4y ago
Can't wait, it will be high-larious.
And remember, learning is for life - it's never too late to get a degree!
daniellederek 4y ago
You can still enlist up to age 42. Find a different recruiter. The armed forces need all kinds of machinists, janitors electricians, cooks, mail sorters, ckerks, secretery, mechanics, hazmat handlers, human shields, test pilots, nuclear blast test subjects.....
[deleted] 4y ago
How DARE you be so spot on? Logic is a tool of the patriarchy!!!
Seriously though, this put a LOT of female thinking into perspective for me. Almost as if I was thinking about romantic relationships incorrectly, and trying to find how I was the problem.
I'm not saying I'm perfect but I am saying that your interpretation fits perfectly in my interactions with women when I was dating.
It was always a complete mind fuck to me how those women would take issue with something ive done that literally any other person would thank me for doing.
The idea: unwinnable or setup for failure situation applies here.
This is why I completely ignore women today.
variedpageants 4y ago
like what, specifically?
[deleted] 4y ago
Let me know if you need more
[deleted] 4y ago
Paying an overdue electric bill for her and her kid. Her 4 year old kid.
variedpageants 4y ago
I couldn't even begin to guess why she would take issue with that. But, I have had a woman say "I didn't ask you do that" before so, yeah, shit like that does happen.
[deleted] 4y ago
That's the go to excuse. I mean, how could anyone want to help out someone they loved, with no strings attached to relieve some stress and financial burden with no strings attached? How heartless of them!
It means they're cheating and/or they never gave a fuck in the first place.

Ha ha, nice. Was not expecting a satire post. Certainly not the typical comparison I have seen before, so nice work making something unique.

I saw your title, and this former Army guy came in here to try to talk you out of it.
Instead, I'm duly impressed by your analogy.
Great work! Small thing, though: neither the Marines nor the Navy are "armies". They are branches of the US Military, just like the Army and the Air Force.
Happy_Objective 4y ago
in a literal sense, marines are basically just land sailors with guns that shoot.
variedpageants 4y ago
Reported for gaslighting. Why do you go back to TRP (the recruit pill) and let us Generals keep looking for a HVM (high-value military)
Overkillengine 4y ago
Same, a truly amusing read. Nailed the unrealistic expectations vs lack of value offered perfectly.
disayle32 4y ago
Sounds like you've got a story of your own. Care to tell it?
Typo-MAGAshiv Mod 4y ago
Maybe sometime in the future. I don't want to dox myself.
12inchbamboo 4y ago
Actually you forgot one thing.
The military gave you several offers when you were 18 to join them, sending you several emails, but you declined. You said that you had better career options. Better pay with other several benefits that the military could not offer.
Now the career you had doesn't like old persons and you were retrenched. You started looking at your email archives to get enlisted on the military but they are no longer interested.

Yass. Slay General. Be sure to give yourself some medals too. You're worth way more than those promote-meshas who served for 20 years.
Vashtu 4y ago
What in the fuck is this from?
variedpageants 4y ago
It's one of those people who dress up like they're in the military, but they can't just be average or keep it low key, they have to give themselves every fucking medal because that's how their ego works. "Stolen valor" they call it.
The pic is of Robin Summers Mitchell and you'll notice that the ribbons include:
Navy Distinguished Service Medal. That one has been awarded to less than 700 people. There are more people who have been awarded the Medal of Honor.
There's also the rank: O-5. "Commander" in the Navy or "Lieutenant Colonel" in the others. That's an officer rank that takes about 15 years to reach.
And the crown jewel: Basic underwater demolition school: BUDS. This person is claiming to be a Navy Fucking Seal.
So this person is walking around claiming to be a Navy Seal Commander with several hardcore combat-related medals. There literally aren't 100 people alive with those awards, and I bet none of them are officers, and probably half of them missing a limb.
That's the ego of these people. They have to claim to be the best.
What's extra amusing about this case is that this person is transgender. And because we live in clown world, nobody is willing to call them out on their lies (that would be transphobic, you see). But there is actually one legit Navy Seal who is transgender and they're the only one allowed to do it: https://abc7news.com/i-team-transgender-navy-seal-fake/72774/

Hamplanet11396 4y ago
I'm 18 right now, and a both my parents and people around me that I look up to say that now is the time to make a decision to fight for my country or not. I really don't see why I need to make a choice right now? Like twitter said it's ok to be on the fence, playing video games in the meantime for the next 20 years? Why should I waste my fun years committed to something?
beaffe 4y ago

I've been thinking of going into it. What advice would you give?
variedpageants 4y ago
It was good for me to help me group up a bit, and now that I'm older it's something I'm proud of, but a lot of it sucked. I would recommend you find a subreddit with people currently in and ask them what it's like today.
RogerNigel92 4y ago
Depends on age.
I'm Navy.
Go in for an engineering role. Set a time to leave.
Get in young, a lot of the bullshit is easier if you've never tasted proper freedom.
So:
Get in young
Join a job that will help you on the outside
Milk it for all the quals you can
Get out
Typo-MAGAshiv Mod 4y ago
Great advice, and I wish I had listened to the people who told me that. I enlisted in the Army as an 11B (infantry) despite having a bachelor's degree which would have qualified me for OCS right away, and despite an ASVAB score that qualified me for any MOS in the Army. I wanted to kick in doors and annihilate terrorists.
Cade_Connelly_2021 4y ago
My father talked me out of enlisting by pointing it out that our nation no longer had the spine to fight an actual war, and that I'd likely end up on national news for blowing away some raghead's son.
By the end of that talk my nationalism had a big ol' chunk out of it.

The us military is basically a minority/women jobs program. If your a straight male it’s not the place for you. They’re openly hostile and you’ll have a lot of classes about your privledge and sexual harassment
8lackJack8lack 4y ago
Is this for real? Genuine question...
I know it's clown world out there but the US military is mainly filled with conservative types and by extension led by conservative leaders... The top brass in the news are majority older white guys.
The sexual harassment classes you can understand. But classes about your white male privilege??
If it's like you say... The only thing stopping the US armed forces getting their asses handed to them in a conflict is it's sheer size and technological head start.
But China is catching up quick.
[deleted] 4y ago
US Military is filled with delusional tradcon morons who believe they are fighting for their "country" which they aren't. They fight for international banks, big oil, israel, and the military industrial complex.
They also fight to spread homosexuality acceptance, transgenderism, etc.
You will be mandated to take Sexual Harrassment and Assault Courses and all kinds of other insane bullshit classes.
You will accept that tranny that will be fighiting along side you.
Those women who clearly failed that training course?....They passed because they have a vagina and you don't.
Cade_Connelly_2021 4y ago
Have a couple friends in the army who confirmed what I suspected from external observation: they're running critically low on recruits who are physically fit white men from stable 2-parent homes. It's partly why they're taking recruits who should be in the kitchen or the nuthouse.
The next real war we get into, we're in biiig trouble. Especially if we dont' have air superiority.
8lackJack8lack 4y ago
Don't the kitchen recruits all of a sudden get pregnant when it is time to ship out?
Cade_Connelly_2021 4y ago
Or worse, AFTER.

Recently Netflix made a movie about the first and only Indian female pilot in the Kargil War, and they shit all over the Indian Air Force officers to show how the main character had to go through so many "obstacles" to succeed. I agree that there is a bias, but IAF officers are very professional, and they filed a complaint with the Ministry of Defense against Netflix. And they also disrespected the uniform of the Indian Army by showing it in a sex scene. Stupid cunts. I am never going to buy this shitty stuff in my life now. Maybe I can join as an Engineer in the Indian Army.
cityofbrotherlyhate 4y ago
I totally get what you mean BUT you must realize it sounds kind of butt hurt to be complaining to netflix how someone was portrayed.also showing the uniform during a sex scene seems kinda butt hurt too but I'm gonna chalk that up to differences in culture
[deleted] 4y ago
India is an extremely conservative nation. And the Armed Forces are highly respected here. The case about the Movie was that it was not truthful in it's portrayal of the IAF, and these movies are also watched by foreign audiences, which destroys the reputation that IAF works so hard to maintain.
cityofbrotherlyhate 4y ago
Ya that's exactly what I meant when I said difference in culture
AdrianDatersSource 4y ago
good luck in yalls fight against china
[deleted] 4y ago
Thanks. China is locked into a stalemate, and Indian Forces are preparing for a limited war by emergency procurement of MiG-29, Su-30MKI, artillery ammunition and winter gear. I guess there might be a war, but the scenario is unlikely as Chinese never have the balls to attack an Army that has extensive experience in operating on the highest battlefield on the earth.
kakramer1211 4y ago
With the change to a globalist China dominated administration, the War Machine is going to start churning its gears. It will be back to endless wars and conflicts. If you you can convince them you are fit and are under 34, you could be allowed to join, you have got to pay attention to the details and yes soldiering is boring but that is the best part. When the bleeding and the dying start you have got to be ready to go. If you get in, save your money and keep up with your studying and you will do fine. There are all of the same jobs and careers inside the military as there are out in the world.
