I'll make this brief and to the point.
The pillars of health are posted here all the time. Lift, Eat well, and get plenty of sleep.
That said some things are out of your control and parts break and things are out of tune.
I say take control of your health because nobody gives a fuck if you're a "healthy" male in your 20's, 30's, and 40's and shit seems off to you.
-
Testosterone below 500? Doctor:"oh thats in the normal range you're good to go"
-
Girlfriend/Wife acting strange on Birth Control or wants an Abortion - You're a guy what do you know
- Something feels off? -Turn your head and cough...oh everything looks fine
What really set me off was that lack of care, professionalism towards a family member with a health related issue. Told him it's all in his head...turned out to be cancer.
Summary: Know your shit, ask lots of questions, read medical journals, don't trust one or two physicians word.

Life is very simple:
"50% of all Doctors graduate in the bottom half of their class."
Let that sink in.
Now apply it to everyone in life. Finding a doctor is no different than finding an LTR. 80% of the population is completely fucking useless.
You want to know how the majority of the population find their medical advisors:
They stick with whoever their parents, or guardian or state originally gave them to.
The open the phone book and find the nearest office to their home.
Doctors are not part of some global conspiracy to keep men weak and medicated, there's just a lot more shitty, burnt out, or careless people doing jobs than there are skilled professionals who take their craft incredibly seriously.
I drive over an hour to see my doctor, he was the 8th office I went to when trying to find someone I felt had my best interests in mind and was passionate about his work.
A good doctor is more than worth the price of admission. A bad doctor is the common pill pusher, either earning a nice commission drugging you, just too lazy to really try and help you get to the source of a problem, or rightly afraid he will lose your business if he doesn't give you pills, since that's what most of this loser population wants for every issue today.
My doctor wouldn't even prescribe me high dose ibuprofen if I fell off my fucking roof. He doesn't believe in that shit unless it is a last resort and would rather lose a patient to another doctor than potentially help them get addicted to pills.
He orders extensive blood work and explains all of it including how and why different groups and medical professions disagree on what a deficiency actually is.
In short, just remember that roughly 80% of the population is at best worthless and at worst harmful. Friends, lawyers, teachers, everything, possibly even yourself but hopefully you are working towards changing that.

True man. I've tested my T-levels one month ago and my T was 193nd/dl and my doc said it's not a low T because it's in ref. values. Need to find another one, because this one doesn't know a shit.

This was incredibly eye-opening. Never thought of it from this perspective. Great post. Now I have to rethink everything...

This.
"You have back pain? Take these meds and get a lot of rest"
Umm, doc, how about checking for muscle imbalances or weak glutes/abs, hip asymmetry, etc?
Marsupian 10y ago
He doesn't have to know shit about muscle imbalances. Just has to tell you to stay active or sent you to physiotherapy.
Telling someone with back pain to rest is borderline criminal advice.
[deleted] 10y ago
They make more money by keeping you on the hook. I've dealt - am dealing with - chronic lower back pain for over three years. I'm on anti-inflammatories, nerve relaxers (antiseizure med), nsaid patches, had injections, etc. The amount of money the pain docs get off of giving you an injection is retarded. I'll never have another, fucking useless.
Know what has finally started to work? Big surprise. Lift. Core. Stretch. More core. I lifted incorrectly starting out, neglected my core, and got worse. Now I refuse to lift unless the form is flawless, train core every other day, and my back is only getting stronger and stronger.

Males in the western society are like worker bees in a beehive. We are disposable and a sacrifice for the 'greater good' or 'queen bee(s)'. We are only useful as long as we can work and build out society, afterwards we are no long needed and thus should go off and die.
Never forget this guys!

You are your number one health advocate.
Most people will struggle to learn basic physiology and research skills. They'll instead end up learning they should drink organic raw apple cidar vinegar. The most effective approach may be to develop relationships with medical practitioners and researchers. They're great to have a coffee with and I've found they are always willing to discuss matters in their field.
[deleted] 10y ago
Fuck I need to do this... Went for an annual physical and they tested for maybe a quarter of the things they tested my sister for on the blood test.
MattyAnon Admin 10y ago
Also... if you're at all overweight, fix that shit ASAP.
This fixes a lot of health related issues (and a few girl related ones too), at least it did for me. Going from BMI 29 to 24 made a lot of difference to a lot of unexpected physical things.
StrikePrice 10y ago
Also, you will not get anywhere beyond the weight issue with any doctor if you are overweight. They will blame every problem you have on that first and immediately.
Marsupian 10y ago
Which is often a reasonable assumption. Being overweight fucks up everything.

this made me think of the kirwosawa movie about the salaryman with cancer in post-war Japan, "Ikiru"
as a man you're slowly dying and the world gives less than a fuck, in fact is probably slightly embarrased and ashamed by the topic of your suffering and demise (like the topic of Cancer in post-war Japan)
Victory isn't living forever, and it isn't making the people you think you should care about you care, it's making something for yourself and this world.

Good reminder on health.
I'm in the low 300s and all of my blood tests/urine tests came back showing great health. Are they any RP threads that specifically deal with raising low T levels? Doc is pushing TRT and I'm not fucking with it.

I've learned that the medical system main goal is to stabilize the working force, not to optimize the health of it's patients. The shit I've heard doctor's say really blows my mind, it's like they don't give a shit at all about your health or things that are bothering you. If you're in the US, consider yourself lucky that money can actually buy you good healthcare. In Canada with our bullshit socialist system, if you're a young male with a life-affecting health condition you will deal with apathetic doctors who couldn't give a shit about you. As long as you're stable and able to go to work, you're out the door on on your own. Occasionally you'll get a good doctor that's willing to trouble shoot your problem and work with you, but you have to game them and get them personally attached to you. If you're just another healthcard number you're getting the basic bullshit and kicked out the door.

Australian here. We have subsidised health care and honestly, I think the level of service we receive is pretty amazing. I've been to some good doctors and some absolute shit ones. At the end of the day it is their job, and the doctors have good and bad days. You are responsible for your health.
I'm just saying this because the whole "socialist" health care rubbish that is about these days probably because of Obama care is ridiculous. There's a Uni near my house who train doctors from all over the world it is a fantastic.
The two points I'd like people to come away with in regard to government subsidised health care is; a) you can still pay doctor if you choose to and you can see any doctor you choose too. And b) if not for education and healthcare, what the fuck do you expect the government to be doing with your tax money?
Mellowmean 10y ago
Something else worth keeping in mind when visiting doctors is that they are primarily concerned with categorising things into diseases but what you "have" is the subjective experience of illness and doctors in the lower 50% of graduates will think their job is done at the point of defining your subjective experience into an objective label (disease). If you allow this to be the extent of your consult then you will be left with a substandard experience/outcome as your experience gets devalued by becoming viewed as generic. If you take the lower testosterone example above if you go to the doctor have a routine blood test and wait for the results, a doctor may look at the results and think its not seriously low and let you walk out the door. If however, you explain to them that you are having issues with low mood, low libido, low energy, or moodiness, unsatisfactory sex or other symptoms of testosterone deficiency and explain how it is impacting your quality of life then the test results have a better context to be viewed in terms of and you can say to the doctor that you want this context (the sbjective illness experience) to be improved. This could see the doctor run other tests to rule out other possble influences that could be impacting on your experience, eg vitamin deficiency etc. The importance of sex to men and women's health is so pivotal that it is a crying shame to walk out of a doctors office with it as an issue untreated when there are simple treatments that can prevent testosterone deficiency from impacting your life, overall well being and happiness. So don't let the doctors define you in terms of numbers on charts, tell them your issues and give them your context and demand to be "made better". If they don't get on board then change to another one. Talking to your mates is a good way of findng a good doctor.

This is a topic that I have been studying like a maniac in the last year. Sadly, today's mainstream information is so full of shit that is not funny anymore.
After years of trial and error, my non-popular advice to anyone out there: start drinking raw milk, raw eggs and smoking organic tobaco like they are going to be out of stock.
audscias 10y ago
Errr....start smoking? Yeah, that's gonna be healthy for sure.
FaustoRMD 10y ago
Yes, it is. There are tons of papers proving it.
audscias 10y ago
OK, please, enlighten us and share some.
FaustoRMD 10y ago
"Other surprising academic findings reveal that tobacco may have a positive effect on pregnancy, although this, too, should not be left up to individual experimentation. A study published in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology revealed that preeclampsia, an extremely common but potentially deadly condition, is significantly less common in expectant mothers who smoke cigarettes than in expectant mothers who do not smoke."
"While this is certainly not worth at-home experimentation, one astonishing study conducted in Sweden observed two generations of Swedish children and found that the children of smokers had lower rates of allergic rhinitis, allergic asthma, atopic eczema, and food allergies. The studied groups included 6909 adults and 4472 children, and the findings remained consistent, even when adjusted to reflect other variables."
Nicotine blocks estrogen, increases IQ and focus, kill viruses, bacteria and fungus...writing from the phone but a quick google will lead you to the papers.
tallwheel 10y ago
There's a paper showing possibly positive health effects for damn near everything nowadays. I'd wait for a few more convincing studies before I started smoking for my health. Basing sacred health beliefs on one random study is the kind of thing that gives broscience it's bad name.
FaustoRMD 10y ago
It's not one random study. There are hundreds of them.
audscias 10y ago
I'm sorry, but the minor positive side effects you are listing don't make smoking "healthy". It still fucking kills you and obliterates your capacity to exercise.
FaustoRMD 10y ago
Interestingly enough, people who had tobacco shops during the black plague survived. All of them.
audscias 10y ago
Nicotine is one of the best natural insecticides we know and the plague was transmited by ticks. There is no mistery here.
