I'm Brazilian. Never went to Rio (never intend to either), but I've spoken to a lot of Rio natives in my lifetime. Here's the general tips they give you for Rio:

Be extremely vigilant in the streets. Never ever take your cellphone out in the sidewalk, especially at night. Rio natives go into a store if they need to use their cellphone while on the streets. Do not wear chains, watches, or any exposed jewelry; those will be stolen. Ideally keep your time on the streets to a minimum, just into the Uber and out. Avoid taking the bus, these get robbed all the time.

Always be vigilant, be suspicious of everyone and everything. Act like you're in a warzone and you'll be just fine. Importantly, if you are surprised by robbers, don't even think about resisting, just give them your stuff.
