Need more context.
If a conversation is fizzling out or its a chore to even speak to a certain person, then just let it pass.
Also with attractive women, if you find yourself stuck for things to say or she's incredibly boring/one word answers, then move on.
If its hard going at the very start of meeting someone (unless its nerves/shyness or them having a shitty day/time of it) then its not going to get better. And if you find yourself doing all the heavy lifting in a conversation ; just end it and focus on something else. It shows abundance too ; another will come along soon enough.

I came up with this question following a trip to the bar.
At this bar is a section where people stand in line. I sat right next to that part of the bar's bar, iykwim.
I chatted up all the strangers that piqued my interest just to chat. Got IOIs from college chick's and an insta gram or 2.
That mostly easy because I would just say almost anything that wanted to come out.
But I chatted up a tourist because he approached after noticing how I was there just chatting up chick's. He sat there, I sat there, and we I just asked whatever came to mind about his travels and history.
It started to feel strained but neither of us were moving until he decided, in the middle of our silence, to hurriedly hit a bathroom and straight up vanish.
Just those awkward we just chatted until it stopped but were both in the same place near eachother type if situation.
