This is all the fault of raising men to be beta providers.

There's a weird subculture in the corners of twitch and webcam sites like chaturbate where guys get status within that community based on how much they're able to spend on these girls. it's helped along by standard marketing gimmicks like giving special badges and other useless forms of recognition so you can lord over the other guys in the chatroom about how you're "special". I suspect it's because in the absence of actual success with girls (i.e. dating and having sex with them), they've come up with their own measures of success, no doubt encouraged by the women that prey off them.

To an outsider, it seems ridiculous: if you're not fucking her, why are you giving her money? And to us, the status is inverse: I'd rather be the guy that gets her without paying anything, than the guy that has to pay a thousand bucks. But that's just it, you're an outsider so it's hard to understand.

And since we're not supposed to shame men on this site, I will say that these sorts of destructive subcultures are found everywhere. It's really, really, really easy to get people to misjudge value, and place importance on things that are not actually important. It's basically what the entire science of marketing is built on. That's what's happening here (people placing value on their willingness and ability to give these women money). But these guys aren't alone.

Even in these forums, a common dupe is people valuing themselves by the attention they get from women. "Dude, this HB9 gave me her number and we kissed!" Yeah? Congrats. So what? So much of what we mods end up doing here is trying to get guys to re-focus on themselves, saying that what you should value is yourself, improve yourself, and let the women come, and whether they do or not doesn't actually matter. And yet we still get tons of guys who think banging hot chicks is like collecting trading cards for the purpose of showing off to your friends.

Similarly, I know a lot of people in the startup world, and a lot of them brag about how "Oh, we were able to get XXX prestigious law firm to represent us". I mean, that's great, but it's nothing to brag about. They're lawyers, they'll work for anyone who can afford their fees. Don't put them on a pedestal as if they're doing you a favor by taking your money. Overpaying for routine legal services because you think their reputation in the legal world somehow burnishes your reputation in the startup world, is stupid. Your startup will live or die based on the success of what you build, not based on what law firm you're paying.

Heck, one could argue the military works in similar fashion. None other than Napoleon himself said "A soldier will fight long and hard for a bit of colored ribbon". It all seems so important when you're in the military, and then you leave and realize none of it actually matters in the real world where most people don't give a flying fuck about your chest full of cheap medals.

Bottomline is that there are lots of people / entities / things in this world that are trying to get you to give up your work / money / values for as little in return as possible. In fact, if they can get you to give it up and have you see it as if they're the ones doing you a favor, so much the better. Your job is to see through the bullshit and make sure that whatever you do provides true value to yourself and not give away your worth to someone else for no reason.
