Hot off the presses of the kernel mailing list Linus Torvalds just issues his first lengthy apology for being so insensitive these last rather unproductive and abusive twenty years. He is quite known for hard flaming people who have screwed up and should know better to the point that its been his main signature move. This has been heavily criticized for at least ten years now and he kept the project strong and made sure only the best coders and the toughest people stuck around.
Do I need to explain how important Linux has been over the last twenty years? Its running almost all of the super computers, most of the web servers, smart phones, refrigerators, etc. Its huge and has been one of the most successful projects ever. Its running satellites and shit!
So now to the email itself.
Alarming key words and clips: introspective, "look yourself in the mirror", ignoring some fairly deep-seated feelings in the community, I am not an emotionally empathetic kind of person, This week people in our community confronted me about my lifetime of not understanding emotions, I know now this was not OK and I am truly sorry, and I want to apologize to the people that my personal behavior hurt and possibly drove away, I am going to take time off and get some assistance on how to understand people's emotions and respond appropriately..
Oh no! He apologized. I mean, he really apologized. I'd have really preferred it if he hadn't done so. Especially not for the last twenty years of his conduct. MAN DOWN, MAN DOWN!
Today marks the beginning of a era that everyone close to Linux (not the person) has known was coming for a long time. That is an end to the era of the in-your-face, show-me-the-code mostly male dominated ultra innovative space. The culture around it will now slowly be replaced by the lame suits of HR, the harpy girl-powered programmers overhearing dork jokes at conferences, gender neutral language, prim and proper mailing list language and the whole works.
What to say? Its going to be a process and the forces are already there just chipping away at things.
[edit] Hilariously so far the people with retorts thoughtful or one-liners don't seem to have any noticeable interest in technology according to their posting history. For example if you read my posts you'll see that I'm engaged in computer subjects. Not so for the incredibly fast early retorts.

His best qualities were that he deeply cared about the Linux kernel and he was blunt about the reality of making it high quality even if that meant telling someone their code was shit.
Why apologize for that?

People with superb computer science skills are often not very emotionally and socially talented. Their superiority in logical-mathematical thinking comes with an inferiority in the social and emotional realm unfortunately. That's how human personality types can be explained: strengths in one particular dimension usually go along with weaknesses in another dimension. The alternative is mediocrity (no pronounced strengths or weaknesses)

Dude what the hell? He has been a shithead for the past 20 years treating even those who did great things (mostly GNU people) like shit. He just couldn't handle himself. This behavior made corporations working with Linux (like NVIDIA for instance, big deal) a pain in the ass. His rants not only made himself a joke (there are entire sites dedicated to make fun of his childish behavior), but contributed to many senior software developers drop the Linux project entirely. Linux Apologizing for his behavior was the right thing to do. There's nothing alpha about being a self-righteous shithead with no communication skills.

If he had no communications skills Linux wouldn't be powering pretty much every computer that really matters in the world (non personal computers). Don't think you can read one book and critique men like him. Ranting and driving away people prunes all but the most loyal and the most committed from leadership, this tactic is consciously or unconsiously employed by male leaders from cult leaders, to drug cartels, to Donald Trump.

Linus Torvalds is from Finland (turning as well into a huge feminist shithole btw).
Linus Torvalds moves family to California in saner times.
Linus Torvalds' daughter grows up into a flabby 5.5 and enrolls to Duke U, one of the proud shit-bastions of SJWs.
Linus Torvalds' daughter contracts the deadly combo of North American Thotterosis and intersectional feminism.
Linus Torvalds' daughter sides in an ideological battle over her father with an unhinged tranny that got fired from GitHub of all places for being too much of an unhinged tranny.
Don't become Linus Torvalds.

Or the ones most on the spectrum that don't care that much about his outbursts. Being a explosive asshole isn't necessarily good or alpha. Calling someone a stupid moron won't make him work more or better, he will just rationalize that you are an asshole. Saying "This is no good, you can do better for <list of reasons> brings the point across too without being insulting.

This just opened up a hole for blue-haired transvestites to rush into and start forcing stuff like changing "master-slave" to "active-passive" or some similar shit. F.
edargham 5y ago
That’ll be hard due to backwards compatibility issues. But I do see them doing so. I also remember my professor telling us they’re pushing to change it to Manager-Worker, the entire class laughed it’s ass off.
EnragedParrot 5y ago
Jesus Christ. Glad the class laughed at the idiot.
Spoor 5y ago
Lots of projects have dropped that terminology in the past few days alone. They said that they couldn't care less about backwards compatibility.
valenin 5y ago
One of the reasons Microsoft survived and almost took over the industry completely in the 90s is because at the time they were meticulously backwards compatible.
Barring a complete paradigm shift (windows 3 to 95 is the standout), if you had software that worked, Microsoft took the responsibility for ensuring it worked after you upgraded windows. Which is a strong selling point for consumers, but it absolutely made businesses cream themselves.
There was a bug in one version of windows that a b or c list game relied on, for example. In order to maintain backwards compatibility, future versions of windows specifically checked whether you were launching that game when you launched a program, and used the old, buggy behavior for that process if you were. They were that serious.
But yeah fuck it. Forget that bullshit. Plus we get the added bonus of making users have to search twice for support because their issue's solution might use either set of terminology.

Well, first they came for Ruby, now they did it to Python. Let's hope Linux has set a bar way too high for pozzed dummies to infect it.
sorry_mommy 5y ago
Sorry, what did they do to Ruby and Python exactly? I'm out of the loop.
RedPillHanSolo 5y ago
They changed (or changing now) "master-slave" to something else in Python. Not sure they did the same with Ruby, but the transvestite pushed his CoC in Ruby for sure.
I also googled and stumbled upon a ticket in github with a title "Transphobic maintainer should be removed from project". You can google it. The transvestite called an open season on a guy who suggested that "trans people do not accept reality" (from his private twitter account).

As an old developer I've been in too many places when this culture takes over. It called "corporate world".
Everything slows down 10x. Software expenses increases 10x, bugs abound, computers crawl. Meetings takes most of the day. Ah, you talk about your family and your little dog in the meetings, of course. Feelings are important.
It's the natural evolution. When men colonize an environment, just then, women arrive, and womenize the environment. Their social structure is very different than men's. But make no mistake, those people are savages, and will ostracize and force you to resign much more violently that the apparently 'violent' aggressive male culture.
Then, the bravest men abandon the place and explore other lands. It's time to explore other lands.
Edit: We suspect from a start it was not the jokes, but the SJW feminist. Indeed, it was the feminists: https://www.newyorker.com/science/elements/after-years-of-abusive-e-mails-the-creator-of-linux-steps-aside

The internet of my youth was like the wild west. Its fucking gone now.
Ive noticed something interesting in my 23 years of living. There are stages everything thats ever been succesful will go through. Everything has a golden age and that age usually comes just before something gets overpopulated and corrupted.
It happens with online games a lot. It happened with the internet, society as a whole. Theres this great time when a game will come out and people start playing it. Then if its really good and worth playing, players figure out the true essence of the game. some get really fucking good at it. Sometimes its due to an exploitable system, bugs, a combination of things, but arguably those are all things being manipulated by the player so theyre skills that develop as a necessity to be able to play the game at an advanced level. There are people having serious fun with the game and its gaining huge popularity, and the group of people whining about bugs and "this games unfair" grows to scale with the population.
4chan was like that. Theres always an "if you dont like it, leave" mentality among the core audience. Then it gets eroded. I think the "wild west" is a really good analogy for it because its the exact same effect. The biggest names were the men who got shit done, we remember generals, war heroes and outlaws from that time
Youtube is a prime example as well. The model seems to be that a new system gains traction with the population because it can provide value. At first, the system isnt as widely known so its the most valuable to its core audience. as that system grows and gains exposure, more people enter into it. The system overall is capable of providing greater value to those that can extract it as there are more and more people participating in the system. At this point a second awareness is growing, wherein the people within the system become aware of the people doing the best within the system. As the amount of value provided by this system is disproportionate, the "have nots" will seek any avenue to become one of the "haves"
one such strategy is neutering the system
So now we get the talk of fairness and equality. With a game its about nerfing shit, making it more user friendly and hand holdy because at the end of the day, companies get paid in money and not in "the reward of providing the player with a good experience".
As the have nots begin getting what they want, the haves grow disillusioned with the system and, then, the bravest men explore other lands.

The new Wild West is distributed dark web technology. You can host your own federated social network on TOR or I2P. If you master this stuff you will be able to go white hat, black hat or just work for the man making bank. I feel as though its only a matter of time before any conversation worth having will need to take place on the dark web. In the West it will be a combination of SJW censorship and just needing to get away from them to a place that has a higher skill floor.

Shit man the skateboard analogy really his right in the feels. I was never really good at skateboard, but I was one of these kids, the ones that spend their entire days at the park practicing. It was not "fun" like the concept of fun that people have nowadays. Its all about instant gratification now, thats the new fun. Post on instagram a 5 sec video clip of you going down a baby sized ramp. My life is so cool and better than yours and im having SO MUCH FUN.
My fun was finally landing a kickflip down a 3 steps set of stairs after straining my anchles for 3 hours and seeing my friends cheering for me. Then going back to struggling to land it again for the next 3 hours, in between taking breaks just chatting and fucking around, not caring if my life is interesting to anyone else than just myself.
I know all this is still possible if I befriend the right kind of people. But somehow I feel like it's not the same. Just seeing people around me instagraming every and all aspects of their mundane lives makes me uncomfortably anxious.
Skateboarding was the shit man.

Just a heads up, as somone who has been djing professionally for 20 years having played alongside big names and doing radio, you know absolutely nothing about it. The sheer amount of time needed not just to master the equipment but to seek out and find the right music just to have it on hand and to play it at the right time is a skill years and years of djing still wont get you. I do however agree about music production - these days its not talent thats put forward but sleek marketing teams. Dont compare djs to musicians, thats a bad idea and its two completely different things.
BurnoutRS 5y ago
I keep reading one sentence, going to reply to you and then realizing that in the next sentence you start saying exactly what I was going to type as a reply. Dilution is a good word for it
One thing I would add though is that with dilution could possibly come proliferation. In the sense that, sure, when it cost thousands of dollars to produce a recording, there were some really great recordings being made because it didnt make sense to waste money recording garbage, there were also a lot of people who might have become really great musicians if they had been given more opportunity.
An interesting example of this is resource management vs the development of skilled professionals. there is a finite amount of everything on the planet earth. It makes sense to say that only the best artisans should be allowed to craft the finest materials so that we ensure nothing is wasted in the hands of a novice. However, we do not live forever and new masters must take the place of the old. How do we find balance so that there is still fine marble to be crafted when the novice hones his chisel, and yet there is enough quality marble for him to work so that his chisel may be honed?
By some logic, there should be more skilled musicians now than there were skilled musicians at any other time. Perhaps its some kind of balance that to have all those skilled musicians, we also need to suffer the simple 3 and 4 chord pop melodies, love songs and similar gripes
Then theres the idea that change is the only constant. Music as people knew it 20 years ago was radically different and it will continue to change. Live shows were huge and still are, but the nature of performance changed a lot when lipsyncing became a possibility. now we have holograms, you can just set up a laptop and thats your whole show. I sing along to my songs with 50 000 people and call it a concert type deal. The cool thing about that is that we have the internet and so many people are aware that "this is different from what it used to be" so you get this resurgence effect going on.
Look at the people that are making electro-folk and weird lofi bluegrass shit. People are homesteading, theres evidence that agriculture is starting to take on a bit more cultural popularity. I can relate to this actually, I work in the agricultural industry from time to time. Theres something cool that happens before a way of life dies out and it involves the people pushing back really hard in a last ditch attempt to save the culture. Native american culture is an example. The westboro baptist church can be a good example of radicalized monotheism. As gay rights and the like became normalized, groups like Westboro popped up.
Everyone is struggling in the agriculture business. Automation is taking over and start up costs for even small sized operations are in the 10s of millions. The people why own the farms that I work on are constantly telling me times are tough and we need to generate a buzz. Get people going to the fair. The beekeeping society has seen a major uptick because so many people are concerned about the bee population. Weve got a lot of hobbyist beekeepers starting small 2-5 hive operations.
Agriculture is changing hardcore and its gonna get more attention. I cite the popularity of Letterkenny as well. Show has a major appeal to someone like me. Theres this major vibe of the stoic, hardworking man as personified in wayne and how that way of life is dying out. They pit his character and ideals against modern situations, its pretty interesting. The whole time it isnt lost on me that this art is emerging as a sign of the times. Its partly evident of a cultural shift
alright so Im off on a tangent here and cant remember my original point. I'll leave it with this though, in a world so diluted that its just proliferated with garbage, eventually what really comes to stand out is the diamond among the lumps of coal. Once people have had so much coal they get fed up with it again, theres a resurgence of diamonds. Or rather, people start wanting diamonds again. Ultimately you should strive to be a diamond. Thats what TRP is about after all

Further, when you put out effort to prove yourself at a job, its very likely that they'll see that as an act of desperation. And treat you badly, thinking you'll just put up with it.
How ever, its not like that everywhere.

Corporate culture isn't inherently feminine. It's bureaucratic which is a function of necessity that comes with scale.
Few companies grow large without bureaucracy.
tempolaca 5y ago
It's true, corporate used to meant "burocratic" but not any more. Nowadays large companies necessarily have a lot of women in them, and with that come the NSFW (not safe for women) culture.
Development companies used to get spared due to the low number of women. Now big-business realized that women are an untapped cheap developer material. And suddenly they went all-feminist, obviously, they realized that unlike men, women work for pennies. And there you have it, the modern corporate world.

If the work performance exceeded their salary, how come that women-only developer businesses didn't drive all competitors out of business with their lower price for the same work?
valenin 5y ago
I don't know if he worded it poorly, or what, but big business didn't realize a damn thing. What happened is that tech became so ubiquitous and such a gold mine that secs could write their own checks. Even bad ones.
Eventually, a combination of good tooling written by good ones and the need for no-thought-required CRUD style apps meant that the skyrocketing demand and limited supply could be mitigated by hiring people just good enough to get by, rather than being able to support a couple of them per company.
At that point, what better way to drive down salary costs than by doubling your hiring pool? So now it's, 'Hey ladies! STEM is coool, and so easy a girl can do it!'

Crypto is going to be big for one reason: our censorship culture that has sprung up over the past decade relies on removing infrastructure. That includes not only hosting of content, registering of domains, but also payment processing to make it profitable (or at least break even.)
We've been hearing about big offshoot attempts from twitter / facebook/ reddit getting cut off at the knees by credit card companies so they can't raise funds.
eel314 5y ago
Crypto is never going to be “big” in the sense of taking over fiat currency. The government will simply never let something that threatens its noose on society take over. Never.
destraht 5y ago
A good example of the banks and elite trying to take over crypto is the Bitcoin and Bitcoin Cash split/fork. The Bitcoin people want to make the normal clearing process take forever so that they can overlay a functional centralized Lightning network over the top of it. Then they work with big numbers off network and then settle up at the end of the day. So for example instead of it taking 15 seconds to clear they want it taking 12 hours. Then you use the Lightning network and it clears as fast as a credit card. At that moment we have the worst of all world's since it is a global decentralized currency with the robustness that goes along with that but then we need a centralized portal to access it. A big part of governments, Goldman Sachs, etc type of sudden approval was them believing that they had the long game in the bag already. Then suddenly Bitcoin goes from being this great anarchist libertarian wet dream to being the "Mark of the Beast", "Illuminati want a global currency" type of thing.
DeadStack 5y ago
I'm sure it's got nothing to do with no one wanting to give up trust in national banks that are regulated by law to some fucking farm in China or India, who don't give a shit about you and your crypto-cash or your laws.
Oh and the fact that crypto is so volatile that it's completely unreliable.
Oh and the fact that it doesn't scale in it's current incarnation.

Jake_le_Dog 5y ago
Maybe there will be forks for the kernel where there'll still persist a normal dominance hierarchy. Kernel developers (and many other free software developers) are stubborn enough, I believe, that they would value their own work enough to elect someone to coordinate the projects, because it was what worked until now.
Maybe that new leader of the project won't be as rough in leadership, but that doesn't really matter as long as the culture and hierarchy remains. Both of these I don't believe will change anytime soon.
I disclaim that I do not take part in free software development.

ZestyclosePianist 5y ago
You can get the job done and not be an imbecile, which is pretty much what he is.
tempolaca 5y ago
Yes, it would be nice. However the important thing here is that he gets the job done, not the hearts and feelings of other developers. If he's such an asshole that it affects the quality of his job, then he should get replaced. I don't think that has happened. Linux usage in computers has demonstrably exploded under his control in the latest 20 years. Not to mention the single biggest tool that caused a revolution in software development, git, that he created single-handled.
destraht 5y ago
Exactly and that hasn't at all been the case. In fact the dominating question has always been "What will happen when he no longer is able or interested in doing the job?!?!?!". No slack jawed faggot is even half-brave enough to try a mutiny while he is still interested in being the self-proclaimed and easily-challenged king. In other words, any corporation or individual could just proclaim themselves to be better than him but that has been unheard of. He remains the reference point of everything simply due to respect and tradition with extremely little hard power. Its always just "he said some bad words and made people feel bad". They read bad words from a mailing list and use that as fact that it could have been resolved without bad or harsh words because bad words are bad, mmm'kay.
Its pretty much established that tech workers are the biggest pussies that the world has ever made rich and its been a great source of frustration in my life that I'm sought to minimize in order to pursue my interests.

The nerds never loved themselves, the jocks did though, the cheerleaders did though, it's hard to love yourself when you aren't the demographic that typically gets laid, but that lack of being laid wasn't because of what you did, but because of a lack of respect for ones self.

To understand this concept we should look at the Albino's , in most societies they were outcast, thus women didn't like them, however in one tribe/society Albino's where considered gods, therefore their social value and mating success increased dramatically.

Failure with women isn't a failure with your worth, it happens when society places you into a category and you don't have enough confidence to show your worth, we teach men if you don't get women you are the problem, and this isn't true in that context, there is a problem, but it's not for a lack of something or bad emotions it's because you don't know how to love yourself.

These days men are focus so much on changing themselves and becoming better , Linus is trying to become better, he wants to be the best version of himself , sad times indeed

The good old Yuri Bezmenov video. The power play is to calcify the organizations and removing the dynamic (possibly quite spergy) genius wildcards as an essential first step, introducing foreign ideology and then managing the lesser people who would even tolerate living under that.
Being from California I'm much more concerned about someone not being told to fuck off then I am the wrong people being told at an inappropriate times. You sort of have to go one way or the other, with the vast majority being more concerned about politeness. Look at my state, we had the best shit ever, best education, etc and then we embraced excessive politeness and have gone down hill very quickly.
The situation with these outliers like Torvalds is that so many things need to come together to make a genius C and kernel developer. There are only so many people to work with on that level. There is only so much clay in the world. I'm tolerant of them and I like people like him in positions like that.
I've personally been told by famous Torvalds-types that my ideas are utter shit and they usually do so harshly and meanly. I take it as a badge of honor though that I was important enough to be addressed by the person who is just defending their space from my big-dick-swinging aggression (and possible incompetence). That is what I value.

Women would not insult you, will in fact talk good about you work in front of everybody. Secretly, behind the scenes they will undermine you, turn people against you and then you will suddenly find yourself out of the project without knowing why.

I don't know. I'm pretty disappointed with what I see in the comments, even from our EC's. Programming is probably the most rational discipline there is. Zero's and one's. Right or wrong. No gray area.
He is that man on a mission and he could fucking care less how you feel about him. No one knows him personally in here. Neither do I. Where did you learn he was such as an asshole? From things you read? From media??
Thing is, if this is not your discipline, you know nothing. As a software architect, being nice really takes a step back to being right in this industry. Maybe in your discipline, mistakes can be tolerated. No not here. I understand if in your eyes he was wrong for being such an ass, but I can relate. There is no room for stupid when it comes to software.
So yeah, apologizing for what works is quite a disappointment and I salute OP for bringing this up.
This is different. Here there's no room for ignoring or agreeing and amplifying shit, no. What you should take away here is he was on a mission and no amount of shit would set him back. All of you who call him sperg and imbecile and whatever bad name you conjure is no different from the people who give you shit when you are working on your mission.
So maybe find your mission? Then you can relate and not be a shit-giving spectator to his.
P.S. I'm not saying his attitude was good. I'm pointing out what you should take away from this.

Seen this shit announced on /.. A lot of innovators are assholes. They see where things should be going and too often have to deal with adult-children who can't be bothered to rtfm or even the first page, and waste their time explaining the same shit over and over again.
It gets shit done. But coding culture from the 70s to 90s is a lot more raw than today, the last 15-20 years the tech media have been pushing hard to make it less than a sausage fest and even many of the guys in it spew the sjw bullshit.
I wonder if Torvalds was tripped up by a special snowflake or the media.
eel314 5y ago
Yup you just described SF. Bunch of soy-boys dressing like euro faggots parading around at women’s marches and anti-trump rallies. It’s a fucking joke at this point but they’re too clueless to wake up and realize how much of a puppet they’ve become.
tempolaca 5y ago
They are pushing with all their might, even breaking laws doing so. They failed, you can't force women to like a job that is unlikeable for them. Also, they suck incredibly at it, except very, very few exceptions. Integration of women into tech is failing catastrophically.
CoinbaseCraig 5y ago
like his daughters?
I'm glad he fucking finally saw around the bullshit. He's a brilliant man, but he started way too much shit that didn't need starting. He wasted many developers time because of ideological bullshit. Linux would have been a rock solid operating system in early 2000 if it weren't for his ranting tirades and ignoring the actual user of the product. With that all said, he is at least has a heart and I accept his inward look on life. Steve Jobs was also a fucking asshole but he also learned to embrace not always appearing as an asshole sometime between NeXT and Apple. Compare this to someone like Theo De Raadt, who would never think let alone utter any words like Torvalds'.
tempolaca 5y ago
Unlike with Jobs and Apple, anybody can say "fuck you Linus" and fork the kernel.
Nobody does, not even big-business. Google tried with android, then it merged back to Linus kernel. Why?
Because nobody is better than Linus at managing a huge, global-sized software project. Keep that in mind.
CoinbaseCraig 5y ago
And everyone, Linus included, will be merging their commits back into the Linux upstream project because it's such a bigger deal today than it was when it was distributed from a Pentium 200 in someone's basement.
You also need to check yourself. Jobs created a worldwide sensation and a product supply chain to back it up with the iPhone. EDIT:
MicrosoftBill Gates single handedly wrote an OS, then a userland, then a full GUI to go on top of it. Theo manages a huge, global-sized software project that is 100x more secure than Linux. Dorsey created a social media service, then recreated the payment processor industry, and then manages both companies at the same time. Linus can eat a dick, he is one of many today and not the idol he used to be because he took a college professor's toy and put his name on it. This post is his come to jesus moment. Good on him, he realizes that there are better people than him out there and he doens't need to be on top of each and everyone one of them.Or in TRP words, AMOGs know when they need to check out of a failing situation before they lose value.

tempolaca 5y ago
Obviously there are many people like Torvalds, thousands possibly. But very few or none with his experience in that particular project (the kernel).
PS: Bill Gates MS-DOS was about one thousand times smaller than Linux, same with Theo. Those are much more smaller and manageable projects.
CoinbaseCraig 5y ago
Mhmm. What is the quality control used with the Linux kernel? How does Mr Linus know when to accept a merge and not? Not because he's fucking mega monster, it's because the Linux Kernel relies on solid test driven development. A literal Conduct for Coding. You want your code accepted by the kernel, it must have xx% code coverage and must pass all tests. You don't need Linus to do that. You need an experienced college graduate at best. Linus will just rip you a new asshole because your code coverage sucks but then use that time to belittle your choice of using semaphores instead of pipes. Theo is even worse.

sorry_mommy 5y ago
That "ideological bullshit" is the only thing that has kept ANY software free and open-source over the decades. Without torvalds's drive to push for humanity's NEED for open-source software, "freemium" wouldn't even be a word because every free software product would in essence be freemium - that is, not really free. If it wasn't for Torvalds's maddening push for these types of ideals against all logical and capital resistance, they would have succumbed to the corporate model ages ago.
CoinbaseCraig 5y ago
MMhmm. So why was ipchains such a fucking dumpster fire that Torvalds decided he needed to replace it with iptables and then merge in hundreds of commits which essentially turned iptables into ipchains? Oh because Linus didn't like the maintainer of ipchains' original idea of a modular interface to firewalling.. or as the mailing list pointed out, Linus didn't think of the idea first and instead nitpicked his programming skills. wat.

Bullshit, GNU did free software way before Linus Torvalds. "Linux" as we know today is the mix of GNU software (the OS itself) and the Linux Kernel (a part of the OS).
https://www.gnu.org/gnu/linux-and-gnu.en.html
Linux only succeeded because of GNU. Richard Stallman is the real man behind free software.
CoinbaseCraig 5y ago
Android is a Linux distribution that has a non-GNU userland (davlik), though it does have some GPL'd applications (busybox).
destraht 5y ago
Its just a shame that GNU chose to build out such an impossible kernel with Hurd.

The only thing Linus should have written is:
I'm sorry you had to read that.

There is so much bias here, by people who hve never built and launched products.
Being intelligent, product and a jerk is not better than being intelligent, productive and good. It is worse, because people don't work for fun for you, they only work for money for you. They don't give it their all.
BUT LINUX IS SO SUCCESSFUL AND HE IS AN ASSHOLE, SO IF YOU WANT TO MAKE SOMETHING SUCCESSFUL, YOU NEED TO BE AN ASSHOLE.
This is selection bias that 12y olds internalize when they read that Steve Jobs was an asshole and was successful. Being an asshole doesn't have to do anything with how successful you will be. How smart you are and how hard you are willing to work is the one thing that it comes down to.
You can be assertive without being an asshole and have people be a lot more loyal to you and giving it your all.
krowitz 5y ago
I agree when you said being an asshole does not have anyhing to do with being succesful. It is not important whether he was / is an asshole or not. He is successful. That's it.
I disagree with everytgting else. I'm not saying one should be an asshole. This comment section is filled with guys who think like women, who focus on that one bad aspect on an otherwise successful being and I find it rather disappointing.
Only in the blue-pilled fantasy would one believe that being good would make a lot of people work for you and give it their all.
Lambdal7 5y ago
What else, that's the only thing I said. :)

Linus has been the only shining beacon of software quality in the last 20 years, while the entire industry has gone backwards (everything is slower than 20 years ago). He also been responsible for the toxic culture in open-source, as posers try to imitate his "agressiveness" by being just shit. Linus may have been ranting and insulting, but he always presented a solid argument about why your PR is absolute shit, regardless if you were Joe Schmuck or 5 Trillion$/year Intel.

For me, this marks the day I'll probably stop following Linux, as the I'm sure the code will just go down from here, now that only one with balls to say "no" has had his balls cut.
beginner_ 5y ago
There are many ways to say no. That is what his post was about. Instead of calling you a moronic idiot, simply telling you what needs to improve before it's committed is till a no, but not insulting people.
MoDuReddit 5y ago
Yes there are many ways to say no. Linus chose his and if don't like it, leave it. I find the OSS community extremely worse and more toxic than just a few mean words from the nordic man.
Besides, can you describe your temper when you have a Billion$ company trying to actively screw your lifelong project? Because it happens, weekly.
Would I react the same? No. Am I in a position to dictacte behaviour of another adult? No, I'm not his mother.
beginner_ 5y ago
Oh I'm not saying I don't understand him. Chances are I would do the same in his position because I'm also not very empathic too and my tolerance for BS and stupidity is quiet low.
But I also can admit there would be better, more productive ways and yes it certainly isn't easy at all in fact probably harder than the actual coding.

Linus Torvalds is not "politically incorrect".
Linus Torvalds is a sperg. Spergs always cry out that they are being stifled when others recoil in revulsion from their utter lack of social skills.
Reading the whole email, instead of cherrypicking from it, would give an opportunity to read between the lines and figure out that Torvalds alienated, not a bunch of blue-haired feminists (because they aren't smart enough to write kernel code, and don't even know who he is), but his own goddamned acolytes.
The king rules because he has an army, not a shiny hat.
The king must never lose the loyalty of his army, or, from that moment, he is no king.
Linus Torvalds needs to read The 48 Laws of Power.
LowCreddit 5y ago
I don't follow the linux kernel specifically, but the big companies have hired a number of "community managers" (read pink haired lesbians and trannies). These harpies do nothing but attend conferences, have closed-door diversity meetings, and write scathing emails to anyone trying to get work done. I have no doubt whatsoever that they have thrown enough emails at Linus and others to guilt them into forcing an apology.
I have little doubt that if he didn't write that email that he would have been removed as the maintainer of the project he started. Most of these men let these harpies start off by writing things like Codes of Conduct and Community Guidelines and the project teams tolerate it because at least it gets the harpies off their backs temporarily. They also tend to come from big companies that pay for a lot of the work. Over time they use the spergiest spergs as proponents and victims in order to set precedent. They then use this social proof to apply leverage to the leaders of the projects and communities one by one.
The women who do these things are all mentally ill. Most are stupid. However, the men who give them their marching orders are incredibly smart and ruthless. Linus just makes it easy. I am sure the only reason he will be allowed to stay is the fact that he is a Nerd Hero. Anyone less well known would have been ousted and sent the linux maintainership to a standards committee whose members are the right people.
destraht 5y ago
I challenge you to know that his most important people were really so suddenly butthurt about his past twenty years of insensitive comments that they challenged his leadership. I propose that you are wildly speculating and can't back it up. I counter propose that its more likely that some over emotional same-olds cornered him at the conference and let into him about being a big meanie and he let it affect him. I'm not going to pass that maybeism off as the real scoop though like what you just did though because its just theory. If you were just proposing that I do something in order to make it a better post then I'll back it down a few notches. However, even if that were the case then I wouldn't go off imagining private conversations as hardened reality.
Yeah well, just wait until you see the next batch if you don't think that they get more pussified than him. That industry doesn't have a large selection of red pill gym bros to pull from. Torvalds has at least TWICE created new projects that change everything. He did it again if you're not aware (no insult intended, I don't know your background) with the Git source code management project and he told everyone "You're doing it wrong, you're code all ultra sucks and I'll show you how its done". Then everyone is using his code and yeah, what I was doing before did really suck, so he was right.
You just don't seem to really know what the guy does and has done. He is not a victim and has never claimed to be. He makes better shit then you and tells you harshly and then you use his shit because its better.
[edit] I get what you're coming as about tech people just being assumed to be utter dorks by default and so not worthy of much respect, but, its tech man. It gets A LOT FUCKING WORSE than Torvalds. I mean old bearded Wozniak and Stallmans are like a dream compared to what is coming down the pike now.
Whisper 5y ago
I must admit that for a moment I was tempted to bat my eyes and say "Please, mister, what's Git?", and let you type out a long explanation. But toying with some people is necessary, others it's just cruel.
I realize you admire the man, and his accomplishments, and you are right to feel that his lack of social skills in no way diminishes them. However, it does impede them. The man could get so much more done if he had the ability to judge how he comes across to other people, so that he could choose his words according to the effect he wanted them to have, and not according to the emotion he himself was experiencing.
When someone is in a unique, or near-unique, position of expertise, the most useful thing they can do is knowledge transfer. This applies to Linus with the Linux kernel, and to me with the Red Pill. And you should understand that, because you are a smart young man, and possibly someday it will apply to you in some area. When you know something useful that very few people know, the best use of your time is spreading that knowledge.
This means that when someone disagrees with you, you have to make a judgement call. Are they unable to learn, and wasting your valuable time that could be getting used to enlighten someone else? Are they a potentially useful person who could benefit from instruction? Or, is it one of those rare cases where you're actually wrong?
When you're in that position, the ability to choose your words according to who you are dealing with and the effect you want to have upon them is critical. Just lashing out because you feel angry is a malfunction.
So, when Linus says:
This is significant, because the words don't realize show us what's going on.
If you are a key figure whose time is valuable, you can, and sometimes should, choose to drive someone away, possibly because they are wasting that valuable time. (Read my comment history, you'll see how this works.) But if you don't know what effect your words have on people, how can you choose when to alienate and when to teach?
I didn't say that Linus's problem was being an asshole. His problem is being a sperg.
Pissing people off on purpose, great. Pissing them off by accident because you are socially incompetent, not so much.
max_peenor 5y ago
Say what you will about Linus' motives and rather strange communication skills (we normally only see the public tantrums, but it's just weird all around), but it didn't take the SJW long to get to work.
https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git/commit/?id=8a104f8b5867c682d994ffa7a74093c54469c11f
This is out:
This is in:
The mission statement is no longer to build the best thing possible. It is now about the people building it. This absolutely reeks of stinking vagina.
I wonder what pictures someone has of Linus. Well, time to fork..
Whisper 5y ago
Indeed.
If Linus had quietly worked on his social skills from the beginning, rather than engaging in the nerd defense mechanism of acting like they only matter to the common masses of nontechnical ape-people, he could have avoided creating this kind of public opening for them to pounce on.
As you and I both well know, the use of both kindly and abusive language is a fine art, and cultivating TRP, we have to use both, and know when each is necessary.
Inappropriate use of kindly tone populates a space with useless people who should have been driven out. Inappropriate use of a harsh tone not only drives out potentially useful resources, it leads to a backlash that ends up restricting the tool itself.
A good sergeant isn't a good sergeant because he screams at soldiers, but because he knows exactly when to do so.
I had noticed long ago that Linus doesn't.

FieldLine 5y ago
Why?
Whisper 5y ago
We take it as a given that anyone in this position has advancing that field or area of knowledge as a significant personal goal... otherwise they wouldn't be in that position.
In other words, we can take it for granted that I care about TRP, and making it a useful resource for those who can benefit from it, just as we can take it for granted that Linus cares about Linux.
Since Linus has unique or near unique expertise, the best way for him to do that is to disseminate that knowledge to others... instead of writing code, his job is to write kernel developers, because this will result in more and better code being written overall.
destraht 5y ago
So I'm smart or a person who can be strung out responding to insincere requests for autistic upload? Which one is it?
Whisper 5y ago
Both.
That's the whole point of this conversation: smart people do not always have good self-control, or a good sense of how they appear to others.
Linus Torvalds is a very smart man, who has historically displayed poor self-control and social skills. He has actually earned somewhat more of my respect with this move, on account of the fact that he has articulated this, and thus moved from unconscious incompetence to a state of conscious incompetence, which is that difficult first step that allows learning.
destraht 5y ago
Well I disagree since I was already of the mind to challenge you and explaining a tech thing wouldn't have been my main move but rather I would have used it as evidence of you possibly not having deep enough insight. Anyways, just a geek out about a conversation that never happened. lol.
I'll be lamenting the loss of great future flames. The world just gets boring real fast when everything has been found. Torvald's has done 1-2 "Trump apology" apologies before and calmed down for a little while. I don't see how this move really serves him. He could have said the same things in private tailored for each.
Whisper 5y ago
Examine the possibility that he means it.
Some people like to read Linus Torvalds flame emails in much the same sense that they like to wear shirts that say things like "Go away or I will replace you with a very small shell script".
Both of them can feel like a great vindication against the unwashed hordes of "nontechnical" bogon-emitters who are just too dumb to understand the innate superiority of hacker culture and technical tools.
But after a certain amount of red pills, and a certain amount of success with women, people tend to throw those tshirts away, and wear something else... because that kind of fear-based aggression no longer represents who they are.
Social skills, ultimately, represent not "being nice", or even "doing what others expect", but being able to control how you appear to others. The goal of developing them isn't to replace habitually presenting yourself like this with habitually presenting yourself like that... it's having the ability to choose how you present yourself in any given situation.
People often come to TRP very obsessed with their "personalty", focusing on who they "are" now, and who they "want to be", and don't want to be. One of the major challenges I must overcome to get them to develop is to get them to focus instead on their skills and what they can do.
Think of them as tools in a toolbox.
When you have something that you are, then wherever you go, you still are that thing, and you act in the same way. And in some places, it's helpful, and you can function, and in others, it isn't, and you can't. If you have something you can do, then you can choose to use it or not. And if you have a lot of things you can do, then you are able to respond to many situations in a way that will get you what you want.
TRP is about being effective, and being effective about being both flexible and in control. Flexibility means that you are able to act in lots of different ways, and in control means that which of those ways you select is controlled by your goals and not those of others.
destraht 5y ago
So assume he wants to improve himself for the best possible reasons. That is great. At that point due to the larger climate I have fears that this will be used, for lack of a perfect term, as a slippery slope that continues the industry down a bitch ass SJW path. There is just so much evidence that it is a thing that I'll just skip it. In the end I think that he did a disservice to the community and industry by doing it the way that he did. So if you agree on that little part then its back to Torvald's not having great control, all around.
He just really really boxed himself in. If he had expressed shades of these emotions in private with the people he feels that he had affected then it would have certainly been less public then this, even if certainly some of them were leaked by really butthurt people. Do you think that the way he did it was ideal? I don't. So I see it that there are all kinds of ways to come to the realization that you are a peckerhead but then how to express that? He just gave the old same relentless voices that he already didn't have time for a perfect inroad into placing him into that clean little 2" x 2" x 2" safe box.
That is why I flaired this post "culture", and I'm really tired of the opposition culture that I just described. The anti-TRP. I just have a lot more tolerance of over-achiever meanie auspies then I do the flat mediocre at best SJW. I try not to live my life simply as a reaction to a farce, with anti-identity and the works. Its just that they are quite a threat and sometimes worth talking about in the park on a perfect day rather than just enjoying the Sun and good wholesome things. They did that already with "this is the bar, have fun watch the game", "you are on vacation, don't think", "this is the work place, just work", "this is Christmas, just smile". So fuck it all and you too. Well, I didn't mean that, just joking, don't ban me [sperg laugh].
Whisper 5y ago
Don't let fear of SJWs prevent you from improving your interactions with ordinary, sane, useful human beings.
No one who matters cares if you piss off people who use words like "mansplaining". In fact, I recommend you do so recreationally. It doesn't matter how much you piss them off, because they are essentially useless.
But other people have useful skills, like kernel development, or shooting mujahadeen in the face.
Don't get so hung up "I must not back down from SJW shaming tactics and fake morality" that you start extending that to "I must not change course based on other people's input, ever".
Rian_Stone 5y ago
I have referred to this before, a compartmentalized narcissism. It's a very useful skill, gives others confidence (personality as a sales pitch) in you in your role, allows you to eat shit with a smile, should it benefit you in the long run (be nice to cheating while while you prep for a divorce r.g.) etc.
I don't know enough about linux and the king of the nerds to know if this breakdown is right or not, but whispers point is sound.
Whisper 5y ago
You're correct about this of course, but in this case it's not even about eating shit and smiling. It's about not throwing your plate at the waiter's head if your steak is medium instead of medium-rare.
These people who Linus has historically not been able to get along with are other kernel developers... people who share his interests, goals, a great many of his personality traits, and probably values as well... the very people he needs as allies if he wishes to accomplish his goals.
Now, the degree of adulation he is held in probably makes people put up with him to some extent, because, after all, he still manages to be quite effective at getting shit built. But one wonders what he would be able to accomplish if he was able to send his steak back without all the plate-hurling.
Rian_Stone 5y ago
I'm with op /s
Clearly trans wannabe programmers are going to ruin Linux, and business interests will totally be cool with tanking 99 perfect of internet infrastructure because of diversity.
Can't possibly be about a man discovering his failing and taking steps to address them.
Heh.
After reading through all this, I actually like the post now, it's the perfect critique of noob trp. Missing lessons right in front of us so one can instead scream into the hurricane.
Millenials have truly hit our "get off my lawn" phase, yelling at referees on television.
destraht 5y ago
Oh yeah, very difficult to find a problem with any bit of that. I don't have any issue with the potential self-improvement part of what Torvalds might be interested in now but of the cultural implication and the way that he did it. It will reverb in the Linux and tech world for the foreseeable future. I think that he did us a disservice.
Rian_Stone 5y ago
Ah, so thats the issue eh? Not that the patriarchy v femenism. It's that you have an idol, and they did something you don't approve of. Would explain why you've spent so much time arguing with Whisper, he's addressing the wrong problem. He thinks you want to learn from this, or hopes you, or the readership, will learn in spite of your intentions.
You are mad that your hero wasn't perfect. A lot of people have that crisis, when they realize their dad isn't superman.
So yeah, the people you look up to aren't copies of you, your sensibilities, and act in ways you sometimes don't approve of or understand. Part of growing up is to let this stuff go.
Or continue yelling into the wind, your choice.
