"But 18 years later, when I divorced my husband, I had a successful writing career and some money in the bank. He got to take half of it. But it isn't even the fact that I had to give him half that I find so egregious. It's the alimony he demanded I pay him on top of it that makes me very, very angry—like scream-really-loud, get-drunk, and eat-gratuitous-carbohydrates angry."
"there is no reason on this earth why you should be penalized for your success by having to continue to support an ex-husband."
"When my divorce lawyer, Melanie, first told me that my ex was eligible for spousal support (the new way of saying alimony), I replied, "There's no way he would ever ask for that. That would be such a pussy move." She shook her head, looked at me across her desk, and said, "Every woman who's sat in that chair has said the same thing. Get ready, because he's going to ask for it.""

SHITLORD !!!!!1!111
MasterGolbez 10y ago
I've always wanted to ask this question from SRSers but haven't because I don't like interacting with them in any way:
Isn't shitlord a gendered slur? Lords are, by definition, male.

Isn't shitlord an anti-gay slur? I mean originally, not what SRS uses it for.

Yeah, but its ok because... privilege /s
tehwankingwalruses 10y ago
It doesn't matter, they are hating on the white menz and that is okay.
icallmyselfmonster 10y ago
Because patriarchy...
Don't try to make sense of SRS, SRS actually was a project set up by members of somethingawful.com forum, they do a lot of those weekly Photoshop things and have similar memes. If you are ever on the forum as a guest, it modifies the post and replaces the text with inoffensive funny words, not exactly censorship though, kind of light hearted.
Anyway srs was devised to destroy the early reddit community, using political correctness. Something awful is kind of a dark site though, real weird mods and even some dude got murdered.
The beauty of their plan was that it was basically Poes law, and "well meaning feminist redditors" signed right up to their bullshit.
Read their posts, you can't really navigate the memes, a bit of research and you can find out who the mods from something awful are.

cbarrett1989 10y ago
That fireman is probably an alpha. Why exactly would you bring up your insanely dirty laundry on a first date though? Itd be like if all a guy did on his first date is talk about how much his ex fucked him over in his divorce.
EarnestMalware 10y ago
Also speaks to how she really feels about her fellow women, the divorced mass collecting alimony. If a guy is a pussy for doing that, and we're all the same then...
[deleted] 10y ago
That shit doesn't apply to them. As far as they're concerned, men should do the heavy lifting and never go so far as to think about complaining.
The relations between modern men and women have a real Pharaoh vs Children of Israel feel to it.
I think you know which is which.
regis-satanis 10y ago
Doubtful. I'm sure she has no problem rationalizing why women should get alimony while claiming her ex-husband is more than capable of looking after himself.
EarnestMalware 10y ago
She'll rationalize it, but it doesn't change the subconscious contempt she feels for people who cant or have failed in providing for themselves.
MagicGainbow 10y ago
I think it's more of a case of 'he's a man he doesn't need alimony'.

hermit087 10y ago
The funny thing is that "critical mass" probably means just 20% of divorces going in men's favor. That's all it will take for the alarms to sound.
bsutansalt 10y ago
10% market penetration is all it takes for something to go viral. I suspect the same will hold true for this as well. If we're only at 3% then it means we're still a long ways off from that happening.
theubercuber 10y ago
I read an article saying this number is currently about 3%.
The problem is, it might never reach parity, or even 20 or 30%. Because women will always choose shorter hours and family time over higher pay, and men will continue being the ambitious entrepreneurs and white collars putting in 80 hour work weeks. And this is the dymamic that creates these horrible divorces, not just one spouse earning a little more than the other.
While I do think more women will pay alimony in the near future, I think it will remain an exception as in this article for all women to be outraged and disgusted by, because it didn't happen to the right person.
batfish55 10y ago
I wonder. More women graduate college than men now, more men are unemployed than women right now. If men continue to drop out of supporting society, MGTOW style....maybe the palimony rate will start to tick up a little. It'd be nice to see.
On the other hand, I suppose feminism might start to publicly call for women to insist on pre-nups. While still shaming men who seek a pre-nup, of course.
I don't know. Best solution: don't fucking get married.
HarleyWalker 10y ago
Not to mention hypergamy stops women from marrying down enough for many men to actually be able to obtain alimony.
TheEveningSnooze 10y ago
True, but (hopefully) men are getting smarter at this.
netgrey 10y ago
Also consider that many women will remarry men who are already divorced and paying spousal support. Can't have their new mules paying another woman either! That just isn't right, all their new husbands money should be going to her!
captshady 10y ago
My ex mother in law went on and on about how she "deserved" child support for her kids that lived on their own, then bitched about ho un-fair it was after she re-married, and her new husband had to pay child support for his 2 kids, 1 of which lived on his own.
phoneprofile 10y ago
That's actually something we should try and leverage to get rid of alimony.
ScannerSloppy 10y ago
This. My dad made six figures growing up, my siblings and I saw very little of it. He wanted to take care of us, but couldn't stand up to his greedy bitch girlfriend. A lot of my friends who grew up in broken homes experienced similar situations.
bsutansalt 10y ago
Once an idea is embraced by about 10% of the population it has a runoff effect and that's when cultures change. 3% means we're still a long ways off, but IF it continues we may see the changes we're talking about.
Also, if anyone knows the 10% thing I'm taking about, I'd love to see some articles on it. I saw it about 2 years ago and wasn't able to find anything on the phenomenon. It was about how fringe or controversial ideas become mainstream.
kratol 10y ago
I think your talking about the hundredth monkey effect, tipping point, etc:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hundredth_monkey_effect
bsutansalt 10y ago
That's similar, but not quite what I had in mind. It was a relatively new study that cited about 10% being the magic number. It may have had something to do with how things "go viral".
AveofSpades 10y ago
Valid points, but I wonder, with gay marriage becoming a thing, will alimony settlements from gay gay divorce push the needle at all?
alt30313 10y ago
I don't think gay men will change anything, I do however think lesbians will. Especially if their like the Jane Lynch divorce ("Embry is asking Lynch to pay her $93809 a month in spousal support.") Lynch's wife was a doctor took her for 1/2 and spousal support. There were lots of outrage articles following the divorce. Fortunately for Lynch the amount Embry wanted was rejected by the court, the final amount was not however disclosed.
grantdroske 10y ago
I think gay men divorcing will change things too because there will have to be a discussion about the children and child support. It won't automatically be "the mom" who gets them. Maybe the more flamboyant one? I don't know.
Clauderoughly 10y ago
I will actually really curious to see the divorce stats for Gay Men Vs Lesbians.
I am willing to be the divorce rate for gay men will be a LOT lower, because they will be able to rationally work out their problems better than women.
Edit: Ha ! I Was right !

SpecialBuddy 10y ago
Wouldn't that be something? The parent who the child would be better with would get the child. That would be a good trickle in male and female marriages.
In my sister in laws case the children would be better off going to the state.
alt30313 10y ago
I don't think gay me will start the conversation. I think gay men will go 50/50 or talk things out and decide the custody.

That story really pissed me off. She's making money and successful and crap, and she's the one initiating the divorce, and she whines because girls shouldn't have to pay.
I hate marriage.
trudatness 10y ago
It's already happening. The only reason alimony is starting to go away is because women have started to pay it.
When they live it and feel it themselves they are completely aghast - just like men are when they have to pay it.
It's perfectly OK when they collect the check, but a source of outrage when they have to pay it.
All I have to say for this woman is - welcome to the club bitch.

Don't forget that child support enforcement is generally not the same for women as it is for men. Women routinely get away with not paying child support and the system never goes after them the way it does for men.
Gender bias is built into every part of the system. Don't marry, don't have kids.
bsutansalt 10y ago
You need presumption of equally shared custody. That'll fix that in a heartbeat.
2comment 10y ago
At least there is an end-by date predicated on the child's age.
But I think in Germany it's not just 18, but 21 or something or however long the kid decides to study and shit?
And then the Europeans wonder why their birth rates are so low when everyone can see that older society made itself an untenable pyramid scheme and we're the next base in line but enough people are opting out so it will likely all crumble and fall over.
Blalubb 10y ago
You actually have to pay till the end of the first educational degree in college, usually Bachelor, sometimes if they are topicly related even the Master. The former border of 27 years was seen as not set in stone anymore by several courts here. The money you pay legally goes directly to the kid though, so if the mother and the kid somehow go their separate ways, the money is directly tied to the kid.
alt30313 10y ago
That's exactly how they'll do it. The kids need the same "standard of living" and since custody generally defaults to the mother the male will be fucked.
Demonspawn 10y ago
This is how they've already done it. As marriage became less common, child support payments went up and up.
vengefully_yours 10y ago
68% in Nebraska, that is gross before taxes. The law says they have to leave the man at least $950 each month, but they often don't. However, a woman only has to pay 20% max and can't go under $1500 a month, its not what the law states, but its how it is applied.
Males have it enforced, females do not in that state. She doesn't have to pay, but the man has no choice.
Planner_Hammish 10y ago
I don't know how far $950/mo will go where you live, but here, that won't even cover rent for a 1br apartment. Let alone food, transportation, laundry/clothes, debt payments, lawyers fees, utilities, entertainment... Fuck, you'd make more on EI, as it pays $1400/mo
vengefully_yours 10y ago
Was an E4 over 6, $1740 base pay, they hit me with $1000 a month, started me out six months in arearrs, so it was $1200 a month until I had the arearrs paid off. Two years homeless, living in my car on active duty. BAH wasn't enough for an apartment even with BAS considering my base pay was gone with support and taxes. Then got orders to Korea, no BAH/BAS and had less than $100 a month, which caused all sorts of problems, including costing my security clearance and foreclosure of the house I owned in Nebraska. At first she said she didn't want the house, then later accused me of letting it go, not caring about the kids, and not working harder to keep it so she could live there.
At two points during that year, I had a round in the chamber, safety off, and the muzzle against my head. The only reason I didn't squeeze the trigger is because I was in the military and people were depending on me. The thought never left my mind the entire year in Korea. If I had been a civilian, I would not be here right now.

Please know that your story is helping inspire others not to make the same mistake (marriage)! Your ability to stick around and share this cautionary tale is more helpful for more men than you could know. Keep tellin it. Stay strong brother.
vengefully_yours 10y ago
That is why I write about it, hopefully others won't make the same stupid mistakes I did. I'm not dwelling on the past, I am sharing in a hope to educate others. Shit, I'm not even mad about it anymore, child support is almost done now, just a few more months and fuck that bitch.
Life gets better if you stop making stupid mistakes, continue working to improve you and your life, and don't give up. Sometimes its hard to not end it, but I have shit to do.

They can't seem to realize that divorce-rape occurs both ways. All that really matters to them is that women now have to pay alimony as well. They can just forget that men are usually the more successful spouse and end up paying alimony for a lazy wife more often than the other way around.
This is why marriage is such a farce nowadays. You don't get screwed by the ex-wife, you get screwed by the legal system that enables her to pull this shit.
chtrchtr_pussyeater 10y ago
It rarely occurs both ways with the system being so one sided towards women, but it's oh so sweet when it does...

Why wouldn't they just got back in time and fix their marriage or not get married altogether?
alt30313 10y ago
How many women do you know that would sign such a prenup?
The prenup will be tossed if it's unfair for the woman and the man will be fucked if its unfair to him.
RedBigMan 10y ago
Well you could always pull all the bullshit excuses women use to get out of a prenup... You know like it being a condition of getting married (IE. You make her sign it after the date is set).
IMHO If you're stupid enough to get married the smartest thing you can do is talk prenup BEFORE you ever consider starting the engagement phase. Make the engagement conditional on the prenup.
alt30313 10y ago
If a woman ask me to sign a prenup and its to my advantage not to of course I'll pull the if you loved me this shouldn't be an issue ect ect
However, I doubt even if I ever marry (I won't) a woman with more assets it would be to my long term advantage not to sign one (most professional women I know that have gotten married have rested on their laurels after having kids)
BetamaxFaggle 10y ago
Don't ever get involved with someone that makes more money than you, unless she is just sitting on inheritance and doesn't work. She will see you as a lot more disposable and replaceable than most other women see their husbands.
She will also come to have immense contempt for you, as in, "I make $120k per year, and you make less than $90k; what's the matter?" She will rationalize, "If I can do this as a woman, with all of society 'stacked against me', why can't you do this as a man with all the advantages that are available to you?"
[deleted] 10y ago
Women always pull the "Don't you love me? Don't you trust me? I can't believe you're even asking me!" Bullshit to avoid the issue.
And men, the pussies they are now, want to not make the woman angry, so they just buy into her frame and believe she didn't cheat on them. Or that she won't divorce them and take 90% of their shit.
If love is such a fucking issue, why are so many people getting divorced nowadays? No one loves anymore. No one loves anyone.
Take care of your own shit. Imma do me, you do you. Peace out motherfuckers.
billiegoad 10y ago
How long do you think it will take for the Women's movement abolishes the alimony laws ? Prenups don't work !
monsieurhire2 10y ago
Yeah, too bad pre-nups aren't enforceable, Lol. She'll be paying him a total of $540,000 over 7.5 years, and they have no children because she has to keep him in the standard he has become accustomed to.
I'd wager these rules have to do with keeping the number of consumers up and the number of people on the public dole down. This guy has a master's degree and marketable skills, but I'm sure most people wouldn't turn down free money, especially if they hate their ex-wife.
It's hilarious to me that she actually uses the term "pussy move." Why not dick move? Stupid womyn denigrates the holy vagina.
FortunateBum 10y ago
What's amazing to me is she doesn't bring up gender, sexism, or feminism. She's a writer, an intellectual. She doesn't realize the irony of her complaint?
[deleted] 10y ago
I love how no one else is linking to this article. And some of the comments on the website, "If men don't like what's happening to them, they should just sign a pre-nup."
Ugh. The level of ego in these cunts. Like we don't already? Why do you think they don't work? Its because they fucking system is stacked against men, its in favor of the much glorified vagina.
Just... please. Someone hit me. I can feel my arm reaching up bring the smackdown from the heavens 'pon these lively cunts! And I can feel the human in me eroding. I just want to treat women like things. Like holes for my dick.
CultOfBlackPhillip 10y ago
I find this fantastic on every level. Hope this opens up the reality of how ridiculous man to women alimony can be. I also hope he's getting enough to be able to relax for a few years, maybe travel Europe. I mean hey, why should he have to lower his quality of life just because he's divorced, right?
redpilldude 10y ago
Her solipsism is amazing. So, she thinks it's ok when men have to pay alimony, but it's a horrible crisis when one woman has to pay alimony?
Also, in case anyone is wondering, prenups usually don't prevent a person from paying alimony. So, if you want to avoid alimony, the only thing that you can do is never get married.
[deleted] 10y ago

Usually half of length of marriage.
States with lifetime alimony grants that if the marriage lasts longer than 10 years generally.
It is my personal opinion that if you have to get married for god knows what reason, at least do it in Texas. It has the most "fair" laws when it comes to alimony.
theubercuber 10y ago
In the US, many 'spousal support' laws are calculated based on length of the marriage. For example, half your marriage for shorter marriages. So you could get a huge paycheck, but not for long.
However, if you can prove in a longer marriage that you gave up part of your career, or otherwise 'supported' your spouse's, then you can make a case that their current career is basically half your doing, and then get lifetime alimony.
icallmyselfmonster 10y ago
Even if that were the case, shouldn't it just be the differential that is halved if the spouce just has a lower paying job.
RedBigMan 10y ago
Usually if you're supporting the other one it was because you were like a housewife who did all the chores at home or stay-at-home mom. Which the differential was 100% of the income.

I would be pissed off too if I were her. Alimony is complete and utter bullshit in A TON of the cases.
If you are willing to divorce and do away with a marriage, you don't get to just get rid of the headaches and keep the perks. It should ALL go away.
You divorce me? Well the money I make is part of who I am, so you don't get that either.
explabhor 10y ago
I think it's worth noting that she said SHE divorced HIM. I think, especially in this article, if he had divorced her she would have made that completely clear. If I had to guess, it would be because once she started making substantially more money than him she began to look down on him and lose her attraction to him.
Gstreetshit 10y ago
You make a good point.
woodycanuck 10y ago
There are some legit cases where alimony makes sense. Where one spouse put a lot of their energy into helping advance the other's career at their own expense. Not working or working part time so the other person can travel, work late/weekends, whatever it takes. If they can truly show that, they should continue to get some benefits from their ex's salary.
But if that's not there, then alimony is total BS. You get half of the wealth created during the marriage, and you go away.
iBendYourSpoon 10y ago
Even then alimony should be very limited to a year or maybe a few at most; enough time to get a job/education and be an independent human being.
FloranHunter 10y ago
I completely agree.
But I'd side with abolishing all alimony over the present situation if those were the only options.

I still think that's total BS...for both sides. I actually feel a little bad for her. Alimony is always bullshit.
Of course, I feel Schadenfreude for her too :D
trudatness 10y ago
Please stop using logic and making sense.
Gstreetshit 10y ago
You're right. I should concentrate on my feelz more.
trudatness 10y ago
See if your feelz tell you should get the money then you should get the money.
If your feelz tell you you don't want to pay the money - then you shouldn't have to pay the money.

it really is a mental disease as far as I can tell
[deleted] 10y ago
Oh, I agree that alimony is bullshit, but seeing a woman call a man a pussy for getting it is funny as shit.
Gstreetshit 10y ago
Agreed.
vanzant38 10y ago
If by TON, you mean ALL, I agree.
Gstreetshit 10y ago
There are certain cases where I feel it is warranted.

I love it. Women looooove the way the system works until it fucks them the way it fucks men.
A loaded woman paying her ex palimony, a mom whose son gets a false rape accusation, hitting The Wall....I love seeing the tables turned.
JRcanReid 10y ago
"But it isn't even the fact that I had to give him half that I find so egregious. It's the alimony he demanded I pay him on top of it that makes me very, very angry—like scream-really-loud, get-drunk, and eat-gratuitous-carbohydrates angry."

Equality goes both ways... sucks huh?
TIME TO MAN UP!
dudSpudson 10y ago
God, this story is covered in chocolaty sweet justice. You wanted the equality, you got it.
bradyo2 10y ago
Tsk. Typical men, they're always stealing millions of their spouse's money in divorce cases. Women would NEVER do anything like that.
kramepilef 10y ago
But if you're a man in the military, it's okay for your ex-wife to take half your pay--even if, as in the case of a former colleague, you catch her in bed with someone else.
Suck it up, buttercup.

Glad I didn't have to pay alimony. My ex got remarried within a month or so of cheating on me with some rich guy over here from India. I also have not got to see my son since he was 8...do you think the courts would listen to me...a guy? Nope...missed out on 13 yrs of my sons life.

progress is when laws favor women, don't you know that??? /s
[deleted] 10y ago
Because women want to be made equal to men. They bitch and whine about how feminism is about making men and women equal.
But its only doing that from the female perspective. From that view, men are still at the top, and women are, oh I dunno, somewhere in the dark, dark abyss called imagined grief, where their lives are so hard.
Have you ever heard women bitch and whine about doing laundry? Cooking? Fuck! Its so easy nowadays. Yet, these cunts whine like they have to go down to the river and scrub our shit clean. Maybe I'll make em do that.
Feminism is a rat, that every man in the world should know how to kill. And that is to make sure the man understands men and women will never be equal. I have all this "privilege" because I'm willing to take the responsibility for it.
You have nothing because you're not.
Next time a woman says, "I can box any man and knock him out," I might just lay one out right there. What do you think I'll get? Praise? Pfft.
FloranHunter 10y ago
Feminists want women to be equal to men but don't recognize 80% of men as men. So in feminist utopia, all women occupy the top 60% of society and 80% of men occupy the bottom 40%.
Seriously though, feminism is not a self-critical movement. It can't ever kill itself: it has to be killed by an external force.

I find it encouraging that not a single one of the top-rated comments is supportive of the article. I suspect that the target audience subconsciously (or consciously) realizes that the odds of them being on that side of the table are astronomically low, so the thought of leveling the playing field does not sit well with them.
rapreaper 10y ago
Solipsism of other women finally has a good use.
jacobman 10y ago
So we're well on our way to what MRA's have been predicting for years. When women begin having to seriously pay alimony they're going to throw a shit storm and things will change.
I don't feel bad for her at all right now. I've heard men complaining about this for years with no real support returned from the women.
woodycanuck 10y ago
"When I got married at 24, a prenup never even remotely occurred to me. What was there for him to take? My Visa bill?"
Yeah, bullshit. She didn't get one because she didn't want one. Because she wanted half plus alimony right up until she became the bigger earner.

REPARATIONS!

Truth is she should be angry and it sucks that she has to support this guy. Welcome to the hash reality men face once they sign the contract.
No doubt the fun and hijinks will go up another notch once same sex marriages start going through the same injustice.

The lesbian actress from Glee recently divorced from her partner, and had to pay around half a million as part of the settlement.
alt30313 10y ago
Thought Jane got taken for more than 1/2 a million. "Embry is asking Lynch to pay her $93809 a month in spousal support.") Lynch's wife was a doctor took her for 1/2 and spousal support. There were lots of outrage articles following the divorce. Fortunately for Lynch the amount Embry wanted was rejected by the court, the final amount was not however disclosed. Jane did get to keep the couples house, but I think she paid for it.

Is it OK to just want equality sometimes?
tsudonimh 10y ago
Of course. Any feminist will tell you that.
[deleted] 10y ago
Nice! The shoe is on the other foot now, isn't it?
Dealbreaker-Jones 10y ago
Every time I read something like this I die a little inside. It's like every time a mens' issue is revealed it's because it happened to 1 woman which then causes a feminist outrage where everyone blames men..

And then there is the other 99.9% of women.

The comments on that article are on top of things. Glad to see she's getting it with both barrels instead of the typical white knighting I was half expecting.

Gentlemen, your very first question to a woman that you are considering having a long term relationship is:
"How much debt do you currently have?"
