A bit of a background. I live in an Eastern European country, where money is scarce. Let me tell you the story of my flatmate.

My flatmate works in our country's special forces, kind of like S.W.A.T. in USA, and while our median wage is about $500 per month, he makes roughly $1k per month.

To have any sort of idea, I found this on Wikipedia: "One key measure is the real median level, meaning half of households have income above that level and half below, adjusted for inflation. According to the Census, this measure was $59,039 in 2016, a record high. "

So if that's the median wage in US, $60k, my friend here would make $120k per year in US.

Now to the story. My friend is a relatively smart guy and in good physical shape. He can crank out about 45 pushups in a minute. He runs a 5 minute mile. That's basically his job, and he's 30 years old.

My friend didn't have a single girlfriend for more than 1 week his whole life. He's relatively attractive, well off financially and doesn't lack any attributes, but he just can't hit it off with women. 2 years ago, he gets this brilliant idea. "I will start online dating".

1 Year later and zero dates to his belt, he concludes that the women in our country aren't worth it (lol) and starts online dating overseas. He finds a Philippines girl that I personally find a hard 3 on facial features and probably has a 85 IQ. She's slim though.

He starts talking to her everyday and after 6 months he tells me he wants to marry her. I puke mentally. He takes a bank loan and, after it's approved, he gives me his credit card details to book him a plane ticket. That was last September. He goes to Philippines and stays there for 2 weeks, meeting his girl, probably got some pussy, and comes back home. He starts the formalities to get the girl in our country.

Now, a bit of math. My friend makes roughly $1k per month. Rent and utilities cost $100. He usually spends $200-300 for food, clothes and other necessities. On a bad month, he still has left around $400, which is almost an entire median wage in our country.

He took out a bank loan for $6k. He had $3k in savings from his job. His mom gave him her last $2k that she saved for decades, because she makes $250 per month.

Since September until today, my friend has spent all his money. On what? 2 times they got mad at each other talking through the phone and the girl threw her phone at the wall. My friend sent her about $500 each time to buy a new phone. He paid for all the formalities, flight tickets to Manila for her to get her visa, accomodation, food, etc. She hasn't worked more than 1 month in her life, isn't going to college and she's 22. She bought a carry-on luggage for $80 whereas in our country, which is thousands of miles away from China where they're all made, a decent carry-on costs $20. She recently bought a gold bracelet for $350 for herself. All from my friend's money.

Now my friend, from the $14k has $45 left thanks to stupid shit like this. Her parents never paid for anything, even when he was there in visit.
