Summary
Some users have requested an exploration of the statement satiating desire isn't about feeling good. It's about ending suffering.
I am still slowly making my way through the side bar and learning at a slow contemplative pace, so this post may be a little premature on my part. Nevertheless; I would like to take the opportunity to both offer the following exploration between desire and suffering and to make an entrance into this community in a way that I hope to be valuable; at the very least to form the foundation of a valuable discussion.
I would first like to make a housekeeping note between desires and needs. While the difference between these two words may not be material outside this post; while we are here I'd like to form the following difference to aid the discussion.
Needs as contended by Maslow are the fundamental things that that a person requires to live; ordered in a hierarchical way. These needs form the basic motivators of a human that when met, that person is able to reduce their suffering and to be able to move on to meeting greater needs. I will extend this contention to reproduction; the more of a persons basic needs that are met, the more likely they are to successfully reproduce and raise a child in a community. It is important to note, that while generally, needs are met linearly up the hierarchy, in reality, person's needs will flow up and down the hierarchy.
Desires are the feelings one experience when there may be a need to be met. I say "may", since in today's world of consumption and fem-centric ideas of masculinity, our senses are often confused in to desiring things we actually don't need. Let's explore some common desires and relate them back to the hierarchy.
Body
Any smoker who is reading this will now be feeling the desire to smoke a cigarette. The smoker/addict will hamster away that desire and apply a need to the desire to justify its existence. "I'm bored/tired/need a break/it calms me/ it helps me focus, etc". What is the basis of this desire, no non-smoker needs a cigarette, so where does it come from? It come from suffering. Every smoker who hasn't smoked for around an hour (perhaps less) will feel an empty feeling inside caused by the withdrawal of nicotine. It isn't particularly uncomfortable, in fact it's hardly noticeable, however once a smoker is able to fill that emptiness with nicotine, he will be able to fill all of his moments of loneliness, stress and discomfort with the drug. He will satiate his desire (end the suffering) without actually satiating any needs, and hence his dependency will grow. In this example, the desire isn't associated with any real need.
Not all the food we eat is delicious, so what exactly is hunger, if not to enjoy oneself through taste? Hunger is suffering, and we know that we can end the suffering by eating, so we eat. The suffering (desire) is caused by not having met our most fundamental need on the hierarchy.
Why do you have the desire to attain your dream car or other material crutch? It is because you now have a need to meet the esteem of your peers and community members. Will this car/watch/house make you happy? No it may periodically help you end your suffering (though in most cases the purchasing of these items don't actually guarantee that you have met the esteem of your peers, you've just been tricked into thinking that you'll be loved for buying this thing.), though there is nothing that this thing can do that will make you happy (other than maybe some utility that it has - for example; going fast, which can be fun).
This can get confusing sometimes. If you have a sore back you may organise to get a massage to relieve the suffering, or you may get a massage without having anything wrong with you, in which case there is a distinct difference between pleasure and a reduction in suffering. We can extrapolate this back massage example to fucking. It the desire of every beta to be validated by women, and we will suffer immeasurably because of it. We will suffer because women will despise us for needing them and their validation. Women are attracted to self actualised men or the next best (hypergamy). It is these men that get the back massages for pleasure. It is these men who fuck for fun and don't hate women or themselves in the process. Though woman will likely hate them for not providing reproductive utility. It is these men who will quite happily plod along doing there thing, whether it is being a Siberian Muscle God, Salty Pirate King or like in the above example; enjoying your self actualisation and removing the value from women's validation like u/Challengedge.
All that being said, what is the point of posting on TRP without an unapologetic dose of misogyny?
What is the difference between men and women? We can argue the difference in many ways and through a number of lenses. Most notably in this sub, it is the difference in our reproductive strategies. I put to you that a more fundamental difference between men and woman is that:
A woman's highest need is to be loved. Only once she is loved a woman can reproduce and convince a man to raise the child.
A man's highest need, is to be free. Only once free, are men able to better themselves and then their community.
It important to again note that the meeting of these needs doesn't always happen in a linear fashion and that until one has achieved some measure of self actualisation, one will suffer in one way or another. The more you grow as a man, the more your motivations will be based on self and less on the reduction of suffering. That is to say, the more your motivations will be based on self and less on the validation of women and our insufferable enslaving cunt of a society.
A look at this hierarchy also gives us an insight into why so many of us become beta and fem manipulated; we need to pass through the esteem/approval seeking stage of personal growth before we can self actualise and in this world where we have suckled on the tit of mothers validation for way too long; our esteem and self worth has become based on the meeting of females reproductive needs (provider to a single spouse for the child of another man). This has crippled too many of us from reaching our higher, truer and greater calling of self validation, actualisation and transcendence.
The basis of our motivations for being here is primarily to reduce suffering at the esteem level of our needs (we are not loved by society i.e woman). However, I think most of us have come to realise that female validation is no longer needed in our lives (since probably the age of five), our suffering now becomes based on the need to be free. We can now see the name for this sub as less of a cheeky irony and more of an apt contention of the most masculine of needs.

Wow. Extremely insightful post.
Reader's should beware that "highest need" in the context of Maslow's Hierarchy actually means least immediately important. Avoiding a tiger running at you would be the "lowest need".
Talking about Maslow's hierarchy in the context of gender is very interesting too. Men and women have similar bases to their Pyramid of Needs. But once you get to the top a woman's pyramid will be more of a trapezium as most of her self-actualising needs will come from social acceptance which is covered in the 2nd highest level of the pyramid.
An alpha male however might have a pyramid with a tall pole on top. He needs less social support (2nd highest level) and has a high drive/ambition/calling in life that makes his top level very heavy.
If there is a conclusion to be drawn from your post it could be this:
weakness is fixing desires immediately with short term solutions when they come up. The more often you do this the weaker you are.
Negative spirals into depression start when you lose your good habits and replace them with "band-aid habits" like cigarettes. So build habits to maintain your pyramid's layers, and automate as much of it as possible, and you can eventually reach True Freedom.

Well... the whole "I will establish myself in the throne of heaven and be like God" thing was what did it.
Unfortunately for your premise, Eve chose out of her God given free will, and then Adam chose of the same God given volition. Satan, quite literally, just dangled some fruit in front of them and told them some not-quite truths.

Rather than reference religion, why don't you pose the scenario as a hypothetical discussion of ethics? We are taught to ascribe certain characteristics to these characters, which subtly changes the situation.
See where I'm going with this? Use a little creativity.

See, this is exactly the point I was making. It is a reference everyone would get, but it was also easier to make that reference than express your ideas yourself. I don't care about your religious beliefs. I care that you're being intellectually lazy.
Oh, I'm not advocating PC bullshit. Theistic discussions can be surprisingly productive...but they can also be surprisingly unproductive. In this case it would be more effective to work a little harder and not use a biblical reference; in doing so, you would direct the conversation towards the axiology of freedom and information control.
Instead, we've devolved into name-calling. Way to contribute. Real quality stuff you've written.

Atheist here, can we keep the bullshit out of this sub
CHAD_J_THUNDERCOCK 11y ago
I'm atheist but I value input from all religions in TRP.
Much of the problems with the hedonistic modern world we live in can be attributed to losing religion.
Most people have a spiritual need. Now that God Is Dead the majority of the populace is desperate to fill the gap. Some of them are picking progressivism as their new church. misogyny and racism are the new murder and theft, social justice is the new jesus and a metaphysical definition of rape is the new hell.
Shutting down religious discussion is closed-minded. This isn't a religious subreddit but it needn't be an atheist one either. Most of us are looking for frameworks/anecdotes/wisdom to understand the world and create frameworks with. It would be tragic to exclude religious posts given their value.

There's a big difference between a discussion about religion in a way that is unbiased and informative and pseudo-intellectual speculation about how Satan felt at given moments of the story.
Religion is one of those topics that triggers strong emotions and appeal to religion is exactly the kind of rationalization and groupthink TRP is supposed to be against.
TRP is simple and deducible from basic human biology and economic principles, both of which are well supported by our current scientific understanding of the universe without needing to invoke a creator or God. Now as a psychological, sociological, and political belief system, religion is a very important phenomenon to study because it helps set certain social norms and taboos, it provides psychological reassurances and belief systems, and it provides a sense of community. So discussion along those lines ought not to be restricted. But the above post is blatant speculation linking two very different phenomena based on the feelings of the OP about what to an atheist is a purely fictional construction and therefore should be treated with a high degree of skepticism and not upvoted to the degree it has.
Seriously, much of this sub is great but every once in a while you get a poster who takes two ideas and links them together with some spiritual mysticism bullshit.
...and it looks like I'm being downvoted. I guess that's what happens when you express an opinion outside of the group. Sorry but this sub used to be the last place on reddit for intellectually rigorous discussion but now it seems it's just another popularity contest.

Did you even read my post? How exactly am I being shallow and vapid? You mean at the part I explicitly state that religion's impact on society should be counted but religion itself shouldn't? What has given me great comfort and empowerment is the realization and internalization of the philosophy that a man can free himself through sincere actions and words. You take action and speak from your core and you feel great. This creates a positive reinforcement loop -- you want to do it more and more. As a result, things bother me far less. It's a solid foundation to have and I enjoy laying every brick of it.

Woah, fuck. I never tied that together until you pointed it out. I've met women who pursue self actualization, but they are few and far between, the vast majority seek no needs beyond esteem. I think a lot of men have barriers in their way that make them betas, but once they break through, they can transcend, but chicks can feed off the praise of their echo chamber indefinitely without ever needing to achieve anything themselves. It's a massive downfall of their social makeup.
Good post mate, hope it gets traction.
BlueFreedom420 11y ago
It's not their downfall. It's that you cannot base civilization off of the feminine imperative. Its the downfall our current civilization

Anyone who is willing to analyse their own desires at such a level is on the right track to never being deceived. I personally like to remind myself of the amazing coincidence that the car or shiny object that I maintain will fulfil all my desires this time just happens to exist in my life time and within my reach right now. Lets me know that it's all manufactured desire that has slipped into the wrong priority.
The hierarchy of needs is a good guide and starting point for someone entering the social studies arena, just way too simplistic to take into consideration circumstantial substitution and the fact that each step clearly resembles the standard economic barriers to their attainment is a bit too much of a coincidence for me.
Have at some other thinkers who have more nuanced views on the topics you mention.
"not pleasure, but freedom from pain, is what the wise man will aim at." -Aristotle
"every state of welfare, every feeling of satisfaction, is negative in its character; that is to say, it consists in freedom from pain, which is the positive element of existence." -Schopenhauer

Fantastic conclusion. Appreciate your thoughts. I hopelessly wish more women would transcend rather then be esteem seeking.

Wow, Red Pill is seriously upping the anty on wisdom.
Very good observations.
I'd advise searching out Rene Girard and his theories about how humans are by nature imitative of each other. (mimetic desire)
All desire is learned. It can be chemically learned like in the smoking example, but it also can be learned through emotional indoctrination through the media forms we consume.
Enlightenment is when we recognize our imitation and jump in and break our natural inclinations because we don't always benefit by imitating bad examples.
Free Will means you have the choice about who you imitate.
The beta has no awareness of his Free Will. (so he imitates by default not knowing any better)
Red Pill is about having that Free Will and at times having a IDGAF attitude.
You don't want to really not care about the world you live in because then you become autistic, but you want the option to choose what benefits you and what works against you.
The Feminine Imperative works against men, so you do not want to imitate behaviors associated with getting screwed over.
Red Pill is choosing the imitation of the masculine over other options.
.

Many a Beta fears it, because with liberty comes uncertainty and self-responsibility. So he seeks the comfort of dependency and safety of compliance to social norms. He blends, unaware of the chains he wraps himself in.
NeoreactionSafe 11y ago
"Unaware" is the key word you used there.
The emotional indoctrination machine has so skillfully programmed young boys so as to lack the ability to be aware of himself that it's all unconscious.
There is something we might call beta innocence.
The beta male who has not been up until now able to grasp how trapped he actually is has a kind of innocence in his slavery.
It makes for ripe grounds for Red Pill. We often insult the beta male (and for good reason) but he is in many cases capable of being released from his prison if made aware of it.
So we must teach.

Betas are often unsure of themselves physically and in that physical insecurity adapt a woman's survival mechanism of trading freedom for security.

[deleted] 11y ago
I don't know if women have "to be loved" as the highest need.
Remember that women have an abundance mindset as male thirst is no short supply.
Staying with OP's theme theorizing that relief from suffering is the primal driver in satiating desire (which I don't necessarily disagree with), one would surmise that since male affection is in abundant supply, women don't suffer much from any lack of it.
I propose that a woman's greatest need comes from the wanting of material possessions - which ensure their physiological and security needs. These basic needs are difficult for women to come by without male intervention - even in this day and age.
Think about why women are so often eager to sacrifice freedom for safety. It's because for women, safety is a difficult need to have met. The more wealthy a person is, the generally more protected they are.
Really for women, a successful pursuit of materialism impacts all levels of Maslow more profoundly than it does for men, who tend to be more comfortable being reliant of their physical beings. Women are physically inferior to men and therefore generally need to look outside of themselves for physical security, whereas men tend to be more self reliant in meeting this and other basic needs. When women look outside they are looking for a provider generally, although now more than in any point in history are they able provide for themselves without male intervention thanks to laws that give them artificial advantages.
Looking at this in terms of market values, for women demand for security is high and supply for it is low. The price is going to be high and generally they are willing pay (especially as they get older).
For men, I'd say it's difficult to argue with freedom as a man's primary desire, as freedom allows a man to better leverage his natural abilities to his advantage. Having said that, I would suggest that "to be loved" comes a very close second as men often have difficulty finding genuine love and affection that isn't heavily influenced by hypergamy. Men find themselves having to always account for it.
It's rare to the point of near impossibility for men to find hetero romantic love that is completely independent from a woman's materialistic needs - Briffault's law and all that.
Even though men and women have the ability to self actualize and be free thinking, there are forces that make behaviors patternistic - and yeah I would agree with OP that these greatest desires in need of satiating are a result of suffering avoidance. That's not to say that feeling good isn't a motivator for many behaviors, its just that it doesn't have the same effect as a behavioral driver.
Oh and one last thing OP...
Acknowledging truth isn't misogyny. It's just truth.
[deleted] 11y ago
Affection from men comes in two forms. The first one being lust, the second being love.
It's much harder for a woman to find love then it is to find lust.
They want to be the one that has a better "deal" than other woman in their circle.
[deleted] 11y ago
I disagree. Many many lower value/status men want to love and more alpha types than is given credit for want to love. Remember, male and female versions of love are inherently different as female love is far and away more conditional.
Women can generally find any old loser to love them, but what they desire is the best possible man for that job. Its not the love they desire, but the man (and what value he can be to her) it comes from. The caveat is - the higher the status of the man - the less likely he is to commit to romance as he starts to escalate into an abundance mindset himself.
Not that it isn't similar for men, who also want to do the best that they can for whatever SMV they carry, but for women material resources are far and away more heavily weighted in interpreting SMV in a potential - as opposed to men who barely weight material considerations at all.
Of course for women whether they are pre or post wall is a major factor too. It is much harder for post-wall women to leverage feminine beauty than it is for pre-wall women. The sense of urgency tends to hockey stick upwards post wall.
Pre-wall women want beauty for materialism ROI too, but since they live in an abundance culture the suffering avoidance factor is low. Living in the fun zone is anxiety free as long as they know... Hey that ROI is there if I were to choose to exercise it, I still have time to exist in the fun zone w/o worry.
Post wall women are much more inclined to react with a consequence avoidance mindset as they start to experience a rapid decline in their states of abundance culture. They don't have the option to be complacent and exist in the fun zone. They go from an abundance mindset to a procurement mindset.
Problems many betas experience is that once they've been procured by the wall hitting woman, and thus locked into a long term provisioning agreement, the woman begins to fear suffering less (the beauty to material ROI is assured) and it begins to evaporate as a driver. Unhaaaaaappiness (social proofing, tingles, next branch swinging, etc...) begins to creep in.
When it comes to be motivated by suffering avoidance, the primary driver for women is materialism. It's beyond argument.
[deleted] 11y ago
Definitely, agree with this one. It's what I had meant in my previous post, but I probably should of explained it better lol.
I see where you're coming from with this point, but here's my POV. Maybe you have another stance.
Lower value men want to love a woman for access to her pussy. This isn't love, it's a replication of love through lust. Take away the pussy and this love doesn't exist. It's the phase most couples go through in the first few months of a relationship.
As time goes on and when things lead to the idea of kids and marriage, lust love then changes to a more deep, authentic and this is who I want to spend my life with love. It's alot deeper then how can I get her to spread her legs.
After that "euphoric phase", the honey moon and all the bullshit from kids. If love is gone, you're left with loyalty. Men are loyal to a fault, and will stay with a repulsive wife because it's the "right thing to do".
[deleted] 11y ago
I see your point where lower SMV men believe that their ability to love is their uncommon resource to leverage (delusional as they are). It's definitely a phenomenon, but I think for men loneliness breeds the need for companionship and a desire for love.
As OP stated, the greatest driver in satiating desires is suffering avoidance. Lonely betas are long suffering. Even alphas experience loneliness too, although they do for different reasons.
With betas, its easy to explain. They just don't have much contact, interaction or relationships with women. When they do get into relationships, they aren't very well regarded. So either way, it is rare for them to experience genuine compassion and concern for their welfare.
With alphas, attention and regard is much less of an issue, but due to the superfluous natures of their relationships (which is partially self-inflicted for very rational reasons) they begin to long for more authentic emotional content in companionship. After a while you tend to get a little jaded spinning plates. Such a lifestyle, at least in my experience, is supported easier by existing in, shall we say, environments that have more superficial cultures.
I remember dating and repetitively experiencing a high sexual expectation from women. They would get a date with me and a part of the expectation of that experience would be them getting a highly gratifying sexual encounter at its conclusion. After a while of that the ego-charging novelty wears off and you begin to comprehend that women in these scenarios don't really care all that much about you as a person. They just want to get fucked hard by the cute guy.
This reminds me of when I met my first wife, I thought it was just another one of these kinds of situations, but she was like easy there tiger, how about we get to know each other a little better first? I remember being pleasantly surprised. She had strong girl game back in the day and really knew how to make me feel like I was important to her. Too bad that shit all changed when we got married, when she started to immediately act like the marriage granted her authority, but I digress...
I think we as men all have that instinct to shelter. Not just that, but a close bond with the women we love ensures us a certain level of assurance in our families and (especially) our children. Women just don't experience that anxiety. They know their children are theirs. Us? Its not always 100% for men. That kind of uncertainty is difficult to live with. These thing feed into our desires to love and be loved.

Di-onysos 11y ago
I believe the basis of a fulfilling life is a cycle of periods of "suffering" followed by release. Working towards goals and attaning them. The more goals you attain, the longer the periods of "suffering"(aka delaying gratification) become and greater the rewards become. This I believe is crucial to the process of the elusive maturation.
The kid does whatever he wants and can get away with. He'd eat candy 3 times a day if he could. We know that is not the path to fulfillment. Too much of a good thing leads to degeneration.
On the other hand the pleasureless, victorian life of eternally delayed gratification does not satisfy either. We need the release, the success, the fulfillment of cravings.
"A good life" could be said to be an exercise in gratification design.

It seems like OP is applying buddhist ideals through the terms suffering and desire but he gets it pretty wrong. I could be wrong and he could only know buddhism as that fat chinese guy but I suspect OP is glossing over important details and shoving this post through some vapid buddhist lense. Suffering is caused by desire, which is understood through attachment or craving. The author gets it wrong in that it's not about satiating desire to end suffering but overcoming our cravings on desiring and expecting certain outcomes ("if only i could get more bitches id be happy, if only i were richer and more charming life would be perfect, if only i had that promotion, i could really be happy, etc"). We can never truly satisfy our desires because once we do then we just jump to the next one because we saw that satisfying that one thing we needed was only temporary.
Then he explains the whole thing with Maslow's theory of needs, but it honestly just sounds pretentious because it's not like this theory has been fundamentally proven or anything. It's just an interesting think piece, in my opinion. Just because it sort of strikes a cord with what we've experienced does not necessarily imply that it is absolutely correct. Id say that absurdity and existentialism easily circumvent his whole pyramid and his structure. Then, OP reduces the ultimate desire of each gender in something obnoxiously simple as women wanting love and men wanting freedom, that this is our ultimate goals in life. Bullshit. We're humans first before we're our sexes and I can say that the only absolute we face is that we want happiness in whatever way we can get it. So plenty of men want to live a rich fulfilling lives with their loving wives and families while being a badass. Some just want to do good and live the best life they can. Some just want to get fucked up and fuck shit up; None of them are wrong or necessarily right, they simply are and of course they have their own consequences. So its absurdly reductionist to say that women want this or men want that; even the links he cited don't even support his claims!
So many TRP posts these days are trying to be like some hipster 10 commandments when TRP has already solidified its guidelines in how to be manly and get shit done. They are grabbing from evolutionary psychology, buddhism, modern psychology, fucking whatever they can grab to support some like "The Answer is 42" kinda messiah bullshit when their logic is incredibly weak and self-fulfilling. This post oozes of it even if it has some good points.
Anyway /rant over, I'll get off my soapbox. I'm just getting tired of seeing this bullshit.

Oxdada. Bro. All I have really done is reconciled Maslows Hierarchy with "the manipulated man" in the side bar. I highly recommend re-reading that short book in the context of men being unable to focus on higher needs as a result of validation seeking and additionally the fear of being alone and self motivated.
I did try to find an experiment where both mice and humans had electrodes stimulate a part of the brain and in turn they conducted compulsive behaviour. The conclusion of the experiment was that indeed, the reports from people were that the stimulation was unpleasant. Little bit of a vague reference as I read the experiment a long time ago.

I disagree with these points.
A woman's highest need is to find a high value man that will provide and protect. Love is the bonus but not necessary.
A man's highest need is to be sex worthy.
I wish it was to be free, positive to the world and to better ourselves. But biologically we want acceptance and comfort, these are not the experiences of our community leaders.
Examples:
Martin Luther King - Severely Depressed, tried to kill himself more then once.
Ambraham Lincoln - Put on suicide watch.
Mahatma Ghandi - Attempted to kill himself.

Is freedom an illusion if you defer to the state?
Is freedom simply being able to act without consequences?
is freedom power?
