Summary: Great quotes from Frank Zane that are applicable not only to lifting but also to life in general.
Frank Zane was a Mr. Olympia in the golden age of bodybuilding and also the godfather of aesthetics. He wasn't a mass monster like his competitors and instead decided to focus more on aesthetic appeal. For example he purposely did not develop his traps to make his shoulders appear wider. His signature vacuum pose is awe-inspiring, resembling a statue carved from marble more than a human (as opposed to the vacuum pose of today's Mr. Olympias).
This site recently ran a series of photos and quotes from Frank Zane:

I've taken a select few for analysis.
“Being weak is a choice, so is being strong.”
As you know, weak men are despised by both men and women. According to /u/illimitableman, "Be powerful if you want to be loved, or you will never be loved. You will be held in contempt for being weak."
The good thing is that we can choose to be strong, whether it be physically, emotionally, or mentally.
We can decide to go to the gym and lift.
We can decide to improve our knowledge and education.
We can decide to forgo that piece of pie.
We can decide to respect ourselves and set boundaries with our friends and associates.
“The truth I’ve discovered is that you don’t have to lift enormous weights to grow muscle. By using stricter form, slower negatives, and stretching between sets you can get an incredible pump in all your workouts. Numbers are an abstraction, especially to muscles. Your body doesn’t know the absolute weight of what you lift, it only recognises how heavy it feels. The secret is to make lighter weights feel heavier.”
This point leads to focusing on what is important. Unless you are competing, the amount of weight you're moving is not important; the amount of work your muscles are doing is the important thing. You should be lifting the lightest weights possible that work your muscles according to your goals, this will avoid bad form and injury.
This philosophy translates to real life as well. Is there a reason you want that giant SUV, or the 6 bedroom McMansion, or the $10k watch? What is the important goal you're trying to achieve with these purchases, and is there some way you could achieve them without the enormous "weight"?
“To be successful in bodybuilding you have to be a good observer”
Being a good observer is necessary for success in almost any arena. TRP teaches you to pay attention to what women do vs. what they say, and this is a good rule even outside the arena of sexual relations.
“Continuity is how you build a physique.”
According to these stats, about 15% of Americans are gym members, and 90% of people stop going in 90 days or less. This means that by being a long-term gym regular, you're already in the top 1.5% of Americans in terms of gym discipline. This is going to translate to a top 10% or maybe even a top 1% physique.
Continuity is also how you build almost anything of value. I guarantee you that slowly working on a particular skill over time will yield great results, whether it be knowledge, physical skill, or social prowess.
“Live your life by the hour, not by the day. What will you achieve in the next hour?”
Time is precious, and it is extremely easy to procrastinate and squander your time. Make every hour count. Who you are as a person is largely the result of how you chose to spend your time. When you're flirting with a woman, her decision as to whether she will sleep with you will largely depend on how you've been developing yourself in the past year, five years, or even ten years.
“Risk more than others think is safe. Care more than others think is wise. Dream more than others think is practical. Expect more than others think is possible.”
No explanation needed for this one.
Lessons Learned:
- Bodybuilding principles often carry over to real life.
- For a man, being strong is supremely important.
- Hit the gym regularly and continuously and you'll be ahead of 98% of people.
- Frank Zane was a badass.

I agree completely and I will tell you why. Being weak is absolutely a choice. If you sit on your ass, eat Cheetos, jerk off while watching porn and playing Call of Doody, and you are an obese waste of skin and you wonder why girls won't look in your direction except to laugh at you, then it's because of the choice you made to sit on your ass and do nothing to improve yourself.
Being strong is absolutely a choice in all but the most extreme cases (severe physical disability). You make a decision to get up, to go to the gym and lift. You make a decision to invest in proper food and nutrition. Some of you may even decide to dabble in a little extra "help", but it's your decision to go to the gym, focus on a solid workout plan, use knowledge of nutrition to aid you in getting your body to where you want it to be, and not only that, but making it a permanent part of your lifestyle.
If you are weak, it's because outside of physical disability, you fucked up.
If you are strong, it's because you invested your time and money in yourself, you adopted discipline, followed a good nutritional plan, you put in sweat, blood and tears at the gym, and maybe used a little "help" along the way, or maybe not. Either way, it's your hard work and a good physique is your reward.
Remember this, if you aren't improving yourself, you're already behind, there's someone else out there willing to work harder than you are, and they will be the ones getting ahead.

I'd like to add that not making a decision is taking a decision without considering it. You want to lead your life the way you want it and not the opposite. Be in control of your mind and body, they're your unvaluable assets!

As Schwarzenegger said, "...when you’re out there partying, horsing around, someone out there at the same time is working hard. Someone is getting smarter and someone is winning."

You can't climb the ladder of success with your hands in the pocket

and someone is making money.

To add to this
"You can't climb the ladder of success with the hands in the pocket" (c) Arnold Schwarzenegger
Try it next time you're out and conversing with anyone. Make sure your hands are not in your pockets but instead on your waist or just straight hanging down by your sides. I've noticed people in general take you a hell of a lot more seriously and show more respect.

You mean the guy who's one of the most annoying proselytizing fake natty's out there?
[deleted]
WholeLottaTacos 10y ago
I have seen countless people ask him if he is natty and he simply avoids the question. And his instagram has pretty decent advice when he doesnt get too philosophical.

I like this one. Brings a smile to my face when I do bicep curls and there are a few other guys doing it as well. I'm usually the guy using the lightest dumbbells, but also the guy with the biggest biceps.
QuantifiedDisgust 10y ago
That line made me really reconsider the weight I'm lifting what I'm really getting out of it. Tonight I think I'll lighten the load but really make the form perfect and methodical. Any advice regarding the post lift stretch part? Hadn't heard of that
RedHeimdall 10y ago
I try to keep my form perfect and work the negatives as well. A lot of guys are so anxious to move up in weight they sacrifice good form and also gains. I only stretch beforehand... doing it after might have value I don't know, usually I can't be bothered to.

Preach. Let the muscles do the talking not your mouth or shirt

being weak is the default choice though.

The numbers point is a good one. But it depends why you lift. Personally I take more pleasure from hitting a new PR than from gaining an inch on a body part. Frank was a bodybuilder so needed to make his physique appealing to other people. I on the other hand take pleasure in beating myself, by hitting a bench PR.

Arnold had a very small penis by the way. The picture is here
Vlad_the_Imp 10y ago
Did you really just post a picture of another dude's penis? That's super gay.

Why the down votes? You think its big?

Failing to improve is a choice to live in weakness. Not just physical weakness, but all forms of weakness. No ambition in the worst kind of weakness. All animals on the planet can sniff out weakness, and your weakness is their strength. A pack of wolves will not attack the strong.

Frank Zane would hit 315 by 10 for sets across on the bench when he would train chest. He would do this with impeccable form and focus on the muscle contraction. Now I'm sure he could have put 375 up for a few reps but that wasn't what his goal was. That's what he means.
So what's the lesson to take from this? Well it isn't that you shouldn't try to get stronger. Frank had a physique we would all die for and he was strong as hell. People like to read advice like this and think it means that their set of 15 with 135 is just fine because they are getting a good mind muscle connection.
Bullshit. Getting strong is important to putting on mass, and putting on mass is important to looking muscular. What Frank means is that the pursuit of strength shouldn't be your focus if your goal is aesthetics. Some guys tend to get poundage hungry in their pursuit of muscle which isn't the best either.

You don't have to lift, but you do have to be strong. We all know guys with 500lb dead-lifts who can't do a single muscle up or handstand push-up. Strength isn't just the weight on the bar, it's also your ability to control your own body. This kind of ability isn't limited to the inside of a gym.
Thizzlebot 10y ago
It would have been smarter to say something like "run fast and be flexible" (so you cover all bases of fitness) instead of handstand pushup lol you aren't Goku son.

How useful are handstands when your mate needs help moving his furniture out to the truck?
Them deadlifts sure do payoff though.
blandwondersock 10y ago
What kind of posterior chain strength do you think guys who can hold a planche, maltese or back lever have? Ross Enamait pulled 495 @ 170 without ever training deadlifts.
I think I was misunderstood so I apologize. I'm not saying don't lift weights. In fact, it's a fairly non controversial claim that deadlifts and squats are better for lower body strength development than any purely bodyweight exercises. I'm just saying that lifting is not the only way to get strong. Focusing only on the number on the bar ignores an important part of what constitutes complete strength.
