Got some interesting changes I plan on making to /r/theredpill to help increase signal amidst the noise...
Similar to (and based on) the delta bot code from /r/changemyview, I will soon be entering /r/theredpill to let users award points to users that contribute quality posts and thoughts.
The way I work is simple: When you see a comment that is really insightful or well written, you can award a "delta" point to the user by replying to their comment with a ∆ (or you can type ∆) and it will award them a point.
Our goal here is to help boost signal by flagging positive contributors, also crowd sourcing the endorsed contributors- if we see somebody making consistently quality points and getting a high score.
The new bot will be launched soon, so check back here to see when. If you have any questions, suggestions, or comments, feel free to ask here.

How do you plan to stop the inevitable evolution of the delta into the "super-upvote" that ultimately becomes meaningless?
If I could make a suggestion: ration the power to delta. One a week? One every 3 days? Something that makes it a little more precious, and do not let it accumulate. Instead, reset the timer whenever you choose to award a delta, so you have to wait it out until you can delta again.
Or maybe, if somehow possible, make your delta worth more or less depending on the frequency at which you tend award deltas.
Either way, do something to reduce delta spamming because the post hit the right feels. Yes, TRP is very vunerable to "feels" posts; the feels are just generally not the normal, PC type.
Cool idea though.

I am working on a way to delete the spam once the award is done
bradyo2 12y ago
Yes, I agree. I'd say once per person every 3 days is fair. Is there anyway people can get to see a tally of their delta votes?
wiseclockcounter 12y ago
Another baseline restriction could be that a user can only award 1 delta per thread.

Ration sounds good.

Will we use a system similar to CM where comments rewarding deltas are required to explain specifically what made them valuable?
redpillschool Admin 12y ago
I think that's going to be a good idea, it'll cut down on delta spam.
[deleted] 12y ago
Can I exchange it for misc reps?
tr0n_cat 12y ago
It's funny, I was recently thinking to myself "if only Reddit had a way to assign points to posts. Some sort of up vote/downvote system."

Missed a golden opportunity here for comedy trolling other subs thinking it's serious. Rather than ∆ it could have been an α.
Too bad the \α symbol isn't obviously an alpha.
Then do \β (β) for bad responses.

Would seem to be even better to use the Mars Symbol: ♂

I actually quite like this suggestion. I'll make sure RPS sees it.

I don't want it to become a parody of itself...

You could make it so that if a person is able to edit the Wiki, where you need to have a certain amount of karma in the subreddit, then they can award ∆.
That will keep flocks of bystanders from throwing ∆s around.

Wow. There's no way im going to remember how to do that. Maybe make it simpler?

We put the delta symbol in the sidebar so that people can copy/paste it from there.
Or we leave it as is and have that act as a barrier for people that see it as being too hard.
RedSunBlue 12y ago
I agree with this.
If you're too lazy/stupid to figure out how to vote, you shouldn't be voting.
FloranHunter 12y ago
Seeing this post, I immediately looked to see if you'd be doing that. I'd appreciate it in the sidebar.
kempff 12y ago
I agree with making it hard. That strategy reminds me of a little gadget that forces you to do a little math problem before it will allow you to send an email between 7pm and 7am, helps prevent drunk emails.
Zackcid 12y ago
Yeah, just be sure to post "∆" somewhere where we can see because there's no way I can memorize that delta code.
[deleted] 12y ago
The bot is in the mod section. Just click the bot then go to Submitted. The thread with the code is there.

newguyacct 12y ago
Can the bot auto-delete the delta posts after processing them? Or do we have to sift through delta spam to read actual comments?
redpillschool Admin 12y ago
Working on that right now
newguyacct 12y ago
I still think it performs the same function as upvotes.
redpillschool Admin 12y ago
Except upvotes are universal across all of reddit, not just TRP, and karma doesn't display as a flair.
Meglomaniac 12y ago
I think that maybe you have to have a certain number of points before you can even start giving points. It protects against brigading by preventing brand new users from giving points.
I like how people who constantly offer good advice are recognized by being of high points.

Here's a harebrained idea - use a PageRank-like trust based system where the delta's from "trusted" users hold more weight than a delta from a less trusted user. Initial trust weights can be seeded by mod/endorsed contributors, or simply computed after a period of time based on how many deltas a user receives. Trust scores can be updated on daily, or even a weekly basis. I'm going to guesstimate that there are just several thousand unique posters per month on the subreddit, so trust scores would still definitely be computable on a single machine.
/u/TheOpposingView raises a super valid point about controlling for frequency as well. Each individual delta can still easily be further weighted by frequency under this system.
[deleted] 12y ago
Was about to propose the same thing.
I hate to say it, but what gets upvoted/downvoted has honestly been sort of "off" compared to when this sub was around 1K.
FloranHunter 12y ago
Not directly relevant but this could be decentralized and apply across forums.
