You already know what to do. You don't need to read more posts on TRP, articles on business insider or reddit in general.
You know that in order to become the person you want to be, you'll need hard work and consistency. That all you need to do is get rid of your bad habits and start doing the positive stuff.
You tell yourself every night that the next day will be the day you *will* truly change, that it's time to get serious...
But we all know what happens next... You wake up tired, not "feeling" like it, telling yourself lies like "meh, I'll do it tomorrow'.
It's like a never ending cycle of being "motivated" and "unmotivated", time and time again. You feel frustration, because you *really* want to put in the work, but you just can't fucking do it.
So you consume new information over and over again, looking for that magic pill that will change your life. You consume info day in and day out, hoping that next book or article will be the *one* to change your life.
But deep down you know that's bullshit, you know what to do already.
Some of you guys feel that maybe you're not meant for success, that maybe your genes or other things outside of your control are the reasons you can't change. Maybe that's the way you're destined to be, you know?
I used that be like that too. Always avoiding to do the work and looking for secrets. This went on for years.
I thought I would never change... until a mentor of mine suggested Eastern Spirituality.
I devoured everything about it and after some time, book after book, video after video, I managed to change.
I was able to become more disciplined than ever before. I was able to develop a work ethic that allowed me to blow my business competitors out of the water, workout 6x a week without fail and cold approach no matter how I feel. I became a machine.
I can truly say that learning about Eastern Spirituality changed my fucking life and allowed me to do shit I never thought was possible.
I really want to help some of you guys out, because I know how it fucking sucks to dream about a better life, but being unable to take significant action.
So to help you guys out, here's a daily exercise I've taken from Eastern Spirituality that changed my life.
Here's the exercise:
Observe yourself the third person. Make a constant effort to observe what is going on inside you throughout the day. Witness your thoughts and emotions. Don’t get swept along by them.
Whatever you're doing and/or feeling, narrate it in third person, and be as objective as you can.
If you know you should be doing x, but the thoughts inside your brain are telling you to take a break, go slack off or read junk information, observe these thoughts. The key is not to judge. But to simply observe your thoughts and emotions.
If you want to do x, but you’re scared of what someone else will think, observe these thoughts and feelings. Don’t judge or beat yourself up. That doesn’t do you any good. Just observe and witness the inner turmoil.
It doesn’t matter if you’re thinking or feeling good or bad stuff. What matters is you strengthen your awareness. It’s like a muscle. Most of us approach life from the first person. Whatever we think or feel, we become. But by simply observing what you think or feel, you create a little bit of separation. This little bit of separation is all you need to take charge of your life and transform like you never thought possible. You just need to observe. And get good at it.
Once you get good at creating separation from the 1st and 3rd person (also known as awareness), you can then treat yourself as a video game character. Simply give instructions to yourself from that 3rd person. You'll be unstoppable.
A great example of this type of awareness would be a comment on that Anthony Bourdain AskReddit post (7 months ago). It's not exactly what Eastern Spirituality recommends, but the right concept is there:
Might get buried, but my dude in my head is literally Mr. Spock from Star Trek, and I don't avoid him.
Hear me out - I discovered through therapy that I needed a mechanism for judgement-less and objective self-analysis and Mr. Spock is that dude. He can see the most fucked up space shit ever and react calmly and objectively.
Mr. Spock: "The massive space blob has a 97.454% chance of consuming the ship and everyone inside within 4/7 minutes. Projections show it will be slow and painful."
Kirk: "That's horrible!"
Spock: "Yes, it is not ideal for our continued survival, but it's actions are entirely within the nature of the space blob."
So, whenever I get spun up on something in my head I imagine a mini-Spock in my head with a science terminal that can pull all data about ME.
me: "Spock, science report."
Spock: "Data shows that godspeedmetal is 5.8 days from quitting smoking tobacco and is under great mental distress from the change of chemical intake. He isn't consciously aware of it, but he's attempting to make up an excuse to get gas on a half-tank in order to create an opportunity to buy a pack of cigarettes."
me: "Thank you, Spock, sounds like I'm being dishonest with myself. I suck!"
Spock: "I disagree. It's entirely within the nature of a nicotine addict to seek out a source of nicotine intake. This is neither Good or Bad. Just natural. Data also suggests that conscious awareness mitigates the chances of nicotine intake by 89.45%. You've yet to procure a nicotine source as well. Commendable."
Just going through that mental exercise will help knock me out of a mental spun-up state, help sort out emotions, feelings, all that stuff, into a parsed, objective, and most importantly, non-judgemental way."
Once your awareness muscles are high, you won't have any discipline/motivation/willpower problems. You *will* feel like slacking off, being unmotivated, but you will not identify yourself to those feelings. You will simply order yourself what you *know* has to be done.
Except for this, there's no other secret/method out there as more effective. I've read a shit ton trust me lol. Simply doing this everyday has been enough to achieve anything I want to do.
I've also helped quite a few incels/losers/depressed people (from places like 4chan, foreveralone, blackpill, etc.) the last few months by introducing them to this. I'm a pretty persuasive guy, so I managed to get some of those type guys on Skype and talk to them.
Biggest thing I've seen with *all* of them is that they give too much importance to their thoughts. They identify with their negative thoughts, so the whole shit just becomes a clusterfuck as time goes on. They completely lost their ability to be objective, so they start spouting bullshit like "I can't get laid, I'm only 5'4, wah wahh", "Lifting is useless", "Genes are the only thing that matter", etc. They start overthinking and being borderline delusional.
The funny thing is that with proper hustling (lifting, grooming, career/business, game), every single one I talked to has the potential to become pretty high SMV guys. It only comes down to doing the work and not according importance to your thoughts/feelings.
TL;DR: Look at yourself from the 3rd person. Narrate to yourself what you're doing/feeling with 100% objectiveness on a daily basis. Do it enough, you'll be able to treat yourself like a video game character, doing anything you want no matter how you feel like.
Book Recommendations:
Atmamun by Kapil Gupta
Awareness by Anthony De Mello
P.S: If you're broke, you can download the books (any book tbh) for free on libgen (dot) is . Very useful website.

My thoughts are kinda defaulting to first-person/second-person.
This will probably take time I assume.

I appreciate the premise here. And even agree in the sense that the inner dialogue isn't a big when one can step back.
That said, if it isn't simple, it isn't spiritual.
Dig the potential for self amusement tho.
Muthafuckin Mr. Spock...

This is gold. I am so glad to have you guys! I also might give Star Trek original another chance.

Don't read those books, go as close to the source as possible.
Read Julius Evola's 'The Doctrine of Awakening'. It's a detailed breakdown of traditional Buddhist doctrine.

Great stuff in this post.
To me it also sounds a lot like good old fashioned Stoicism.
The idea is that nothing can hurt you unless you let your own self-destructive thoughts hurt you. Nothing out there can be harmful to you if you don't let it be so.
A Guide to the Good Life by Irvine is really good. Tom Wolfe's "A Man in Full" is also excellent if you'd rather read a novel.

Anthony de Mello is the shit. It's rather hard to get into in the beginning i find. Heard about him in a Tim Ferris podcast

Ahh nice, I read your post on getdisciplined sub already. With the additions its even better! Thank you very much for the writeup.

I think you missed the point. Your starting to improve and reading whatever you've read was the result of those wasted years, the outcome of your frustration, not a magical discovery that will upend all our lives now.
As you've said correctly, there are no magic bulllets or pills or books. That book/philosophy/whatever was just in the right place at the right time, following a mentor who was the same.
When the student's ready, the teacher appears. Or as my once-shrink told me many years ago: sometimes it's not enough to be knee-deep in shit to get you to move. You need it to reach your nostrils to get the message across.

Let's be honest, only a strong emotion like the resentment/pain of being rejected/broken-up with will ever make someone just start those good habits and finally taking steps to be successful.

Another two books that tackle the issue OP's talking about.
Power of Now - Eckhart Tole
The Book of Ego - Osho
Highly recommended

Why the Star Trek metaphor didn’t use Data is a mind fuck I’ll never understand. For so many reasons.
Firstly Spock is half human so even if he’s that logical, he’s still doesn’t compare to Data.
Data is a robot. That would seem more in line with reporting on behaviours/thoughts
Spock is from the 60s! Meaning people that watched Star Trek are at least 70 years old assuming they were in their 20s watching Star Trek. What’s the percentage of redditors on their 70s especially in TRP
Spock is also half Vulcan and Vulcan starts with the same letter as Vagina, which makes rational thought difficult. Data on the other hand starts with the same letter as Dick and most of us here have those.
For these reasons and more, I would submit Data for your copilot.

Saw your comment on your profile, got probably cached or something, when I saw this post and your comment I was like "holy sh, it's about me, it's about that lazy scumbag", for last 3 years I basically struggled every day with that crap, after I left uni I acted like a pussy, like "hmm maybe let's do it, maybe don't, something can go wrong" and so on, also noticed that I couldn't do anything because I had dozens of ideas on how to make money, what to change in life but I couldn't start putting them into reality because I was afraid of something in my head and kept overthinking things over and over again, few months ago I woke up one day and felt completely different, I was literally hyped as hell that I need to change, started working out in home and putting my ideas into light, recently started realising my business idea which I was planning for months, also started trying to live the "yolo idgaf" lifestyle more, few years ago I was always thinking about what others think of me and what to do to not offend someone, now I'm getting into "I'm the boss" mindset, I don't know if it's because of hype after few months about this mindset or maybe thins mindset really works, but I keep seeing that this is really way to go, everything seems to go much smoother now, yet I still have a lot to learn and unlearn, I feel like I'm still at beginning of this journey, from ops description seems same, also the "ok today I will go to sleep and I will wake up better person tomorrow" thing is so fuxking true, I cannot count days that I wasted because of this, days months and opportunities, all went down the drain because of my bp mindset

This reminds me of a video I watched about David Goggins. He talked about how he is never motivated in the mornings but he just does whatever he needs to do anyways because he knows what he is doing will make him better.
critlub 5y ago
I think what's most important when talking about Goggins is his relationship with pain. When you accept that there is pain and that you can use pain as a guidence (pain == progress), you can achieve great things.

Thanks for the advice. This is one of the things I struggle the most. We all have that voice inside of us that tells us what to do and how we SHOULD feel. I have started applying your principles and it is trully life changing.
Tried downloading the books from libgen without success, but I have found another way.
For whoever wants an alternative check out pdfdrive (dot) com. Huge collection of books.

Roberto002 5y ago
Thanks a lot for the post, lately I've been struggling almost every morning to do the things I set out to do the day before. Even though I felt motivated on some days, something in my mind kept saying "Maybe later."
4LW4YS0NG34R 5y ago
I always had problems doing tasks and i procrastinated a lot, but recently i took a piece of paper and wrote in it to remind myself the daily tasks i have to fullfill, those tasks are like a beginner lifting routine but for the brain, so 30mins reading of any book, 15 mins studying and so on, its been great for me to achieve these littles tasks and it makes me glad of myself, which makes me go even further, motivating me to pursue a path of improving and hard work.
kyuuzouchuu 5y ago
I've also gone back to plain old pencil and paper. Much preferring it to using apps at the moment because it feels more "real"
MCA_T 5y ago
Something magic about writing and planning everything on paper, its like the act of writing it down solidifies it in the universe especially when it comes to brainstorming for business plans and ideas easily one of the most beneficial lessons i’ve had in the last few years how important to do lists are and breaking everything down to simple tasks and working through each seperately
GeorgiRRR 5y ago
I like this. You present the problem and explain clearly it's solution. Thanks for this!
beginner_ 5y ago
I think another issue is setting small goals and milestones.
Say your goal is to become a famous actor or politician or whatever. That is just too much. you have no idea how to get there. So you need to set very many very small goals / steps. What matters is that you do something. some or many of the steps might actually be wrong or not needed simply because you didn't know better. But at least you tried.
Goal 1: Search for local acting classes Goal 2: Call/ contact them about attending etc Goal 3: attend ... Further steps/goals will then become apparent over time. Often it's better to not think about the mission/ulitmate goal but just now.
bwheeler621 5y ago
One thing that helps me immensely and gives me perspective is a routine. It’s planned out from 7am to 9:30, with all the stuff I’ve wanted to practice or get better at. 20 minutes of practice in a language I want to learn, 30 minutes of important/quality reading, exercise and shower, etc. By 9:30 it’s not even late in the day and I’ve already gotten a lot done, as well as given myself the perspective that it only takes 30 minutes of active participation to have a worthwhile effect on something.
Journaling your efforts also helps to point out patterns to yourself and stay objective.
ruboski 5y ago
Started something similar a month ago and it has been fantastic!
I have a very specific routine in the morning and before work starts I've already got the momentum going for a great day.
TheBerlinBear 5y ago
Best advise I got is you have to start now and tell yourself you'll do it for just 5 minutes. You have to realize tomorrow means never.
infinityplus1 5y ago
So much this!
For a workout, I tell myself just do one lift, 3 sets, 8 reps and you can quit. As soon as I hit that third set the endorphins kick in and I want to lift more.
Going for a run? Just go a half of a mile, you won’t even break a sweat and then you can quit. By the time I hit a half a mile, I am ready to go another half and another and another...
When I have some work project, I tell myself, just work on it 15 minutes then you can quit... by the time I am 10 minutes into it I lose track of time and then an hour or more has gone by.
MONKY-OWO 5y ago
yeah it's like in drawing, you need to work everyday to be good at like literally, but if one day you lack motivations, just take a piece of paper and draw one simple line and that's it, and you will see if you will continue drawing this day or not
blearx 5y ago
Yep, can confirm. Getting started is the hardest part. As soon as I've started working on something I can keep going easily
Dandeeasalion 5y ago
Yep. I think we naturally fear things when we think we won't enjoy them. Procrastination is the same cognitive mechanism as any other anxiety disorder

Appreciate this post going thru a breakup my smv fell lost super hot girl of 8 yrs but time to improve and been doing this awareness technique lately but never saw it articulated exactly like how you did. Great post and really felt it when you said trust me I tried a bunch of shit and that this is the "secret" and most effective method lol
AnyHead 5y ago
Gotta admit, I was basically just skimming this and assuming it was like any other “how to finally get serious about life” post, until this part:
“...maybe you’re not meant for success, that maybe your genes or other things outside of your control are the reasons you can’t change.”
While the “genes” part likely alludes to self-doubt around genetic potential for muscle growth, height, bone structure, etc. often lamented in blackpill type communities.
But on a broader level, this line of thinking has crossed my mind in the past from the standpoint of general motivation and productivity. And I pretty much NEVER see it given any kind of attention in these circles.
For instance, if I require a central nervous system stimulant (addy, vyvanse, etc.) to get my best work done, am I just brute-force overriding my true nature? After all, we can’t exactly call the 50-60hr/week desk jockey routine as something evolutionary selected for.
The debate rages inside: “fuck it man, if that’s what it takes to keep the pedal to the metal to accumulate enough wealth to get off the hamster wheel, so be it.”
Pile on the “does that make me beta?” Type reductionist midbrain reactions and you’ve got a real mess on your hands.
But I like this suggestion. Forcing moment-by-moment awareness. Being able to compile an objective and judgement-free record of the day’s actions and thoughts. Makes a lot of sense.
Thank you for this post.
uwey 5y ago
Check list helps me GSD.
You just need to list shit out night before, and put some window of thoughts how to react to unplanned events, then pay attention to why you get them.
Sooner or later you will notice people love take your time away, someone will claim it is emergency and needs your attention, there is a phone call/text you need to respond, etc, etc.
Things can get automated, just automated the boring mundane shit so it wouldn’t break your momentum.
There is time you must pick up the call because shit happens, but some time you know certain people would just call you for shit because they don’t have things to do themselves.
Ignore most of people that waste your time, including family.

This is a great post. What is the exact name of the method?
tekn0_ 5y ago
It’s actually mindfulness. However you are being aware instead of being mindful. It’s just a shift in terms. There is also something called as vipassana which also works
coolishrose21 5y ago
Yeah I would like to know also. Just looking up “Eastern Spirituality” on YouTube wasn’t bringing anything up related to what is in this post.
