Was just watching this Youtube video with Marc Rudov Debating Branding Plus-Sized Models when something struck me when he said that "being offended was the new American past time".
We live in a time now where free speech and logical debate is non existent. Was reading today that Tom Cruise son was in media spot light for saying something about there are other more important thing in this world than the whole Bruce Jenner transformation, and within hours of posting that on twitter everyone got offended.
We live in a time when you ask:
-
How come Emma Sulkowicz isn't charged for false accusation and slander.
-
How come there is no outrage with Lena Dunham sexually violating here sister, yet everyone is outraged by the Josh Duggar case.
- How when female teachers statutory rape young boys get off easy, yet when it is a male teacher involved with a female student its a harsh sentence?
When you ask those question, you offend people an are labeled a misogynist rape apologist.

This is the same conclusion that my Dutch cousin came to. When he came to the US, he said there was a stark contrast to Europe but he couldn't quite put a finger on it. At the end of his stay, he had the verdict: Americans are more "hypersensitive" as he put it.
Everything's a controversy!
darthsmokey 10y ago
Had the same thing said to me by an exchange student from Nepal back in college. Just sad.

It's been a decade since I made a statement to others: "only women read the news."
Back then it was half sarcasm half truth. Today it's 100% truth.
There's nothing masculine about reading clickbait.
foldpak111 10y ago
It's masculine if you're creating it though. The money click bait kings get is crazy.
abdada 10y ago
And as I always say here -- be a producer, not a consumer.
[deleted] 10y ago
That's my advice to anyone with 'less cool' hobbies that are worried about perception. Find a way to make money off something and people won't care what it is. I love fantasy football, but spending hours on it is frowned upon. So with some friends I created and grew a website, in the process got to podcast at tailgates, interview cheerleaders, be followed by NFL players, etc.
Also, women love when I talk about it. So weird because prior they don't care about sports, but when those accomplishments become real and tangible then the heads will turn
foldpak111 10y ago
It's funny. I've been really enthusiastic about starting up a business and the women in my life have just kinda laughed or got mad, like they don't want to hear it. Bet in a decade, when I'm sitting on 50 million dollars, they'll run back to me (45 pounds heavier too). Men admire it, though.

I work for a newspaper. My job is writing good headlines. Concise, with lots of information and no fluff. My girlfriend, bless her little heart, constantly sends me links to clickbait websites throughout the day. She gets the entirety of her online information from sites like hellogiggles or buzzfeed etc.
I told her once that I don't go to clickbait sites but I guess she didn't get it, because they keep a-coming.
abdada 10y ago
Yep -- and women will ESPECIALLY be aggressive about sending you clickbait headlines that speak contrary to opinions you might have.
Headline: "EATING 16 CUPCAKES A DAY WILL GET YOU A SIX PACK"
Female: "See? You don't need to eat all that protein and count calories!"
[deleted] 10y ago
Haha read a article on yahoo about the best food to get abs... Potatoes were in the top 3. Fucking really?

Hypothesis time: Some people try to make the environment fit them, some people make themselves fit the environment. I originally wrote this as women/men, but I realized there are a lot of men out there who bitch and whine about things never going their way and there are women who can adapt to things. It's not unheard of. Retrospectively, the people I respect are the doers, not the talkers, but everyone is capable of both. Just a matter of which impulse you're quicker to act on. You can fit a lot of RP and related themes into this frame: hamstering, fat logic, self-improvement, physical fitness, a/morality, beta behavior, and probably others that I'm haven't thought of right now.

Latest link sent to me: Stop Everything You're Doing And Look At These Baby Goats In Pajamas
Dr_HoaxArthurWilmoth 10y ago
Dude, let's leave the baby goats out of this. They are wearing pajamas. At least it wasn't about teaching goats not to man-spread at the farm.
[deleted] 10y ago
She wants children on a primal level, stuff like this is just a poor substitute.
[deleted] 10y ago
Uhh... can I get that link.. for science?

The baby goats in pajamas was pretty funny. Being emotionally devoid doesn't make you a man, it makes you a robot.

I've been discussing the clickbait shit with some friends.
It's telling how 80% of clickbait articles are geared towards women, sitting in bed with girl and she browsing through these bullshit articles trying to get me interested in them because i only read "boring shit" I.E news that isn't just emotionally charged opinion pieces
abdada 10y ago
This is why I don't allow electronics in my bedroom.
Clickbait activates the brain's endorphins and serotonin and dopamine in a major way. It deprives the person from the joy of actually working for a high.
Throwing my TV out 10 years ago was the best thing I ever did. Not following the news is a close 2nd.
vengefully_yours 10y ago
Damn right, fuck tv. I use mine as a computer monitor, have barely watched tv in the last 30 years. So much more shit to do.
wolfNshepherd 10y ago
I make my girlfriend ask permission before she sends text messages. I constantly take her phone from her and toss it across the room any time she's checking it more impulsively than usual.
jotch 10y ago
I read clickbait in the morning instead of coffee.
forgetful_storytellr 10y ago
Yeah, an I should stop playing basketball because the rush of endorphins, seratonin and dopamine I get while playing are unhealthy for my brain too.
What are you, Amish? nothing wrong with some mental stimulation. I'm not a clickbait reader, but this is just bullshit.
abdada 10y ago
WTF?
Playing basketball = working for an earned reward with risk
Clickbait = artificial reward, no risk, addiction possibilities.
Seriously, your reply sounds like Aspergers to me.
forgetful_storytellr 10y ago
How does the risk have anything to do with the effect of endorphins on your brain?
Your spewing pseudoscience. I'm not advocating click bait -- we both agree it's retarded. However your analysis of its negative effects is also retarded.
Reading a snappy title and image isn't causing you brain damage. Relax.
RedEmbrace 10y ago
I'm in no way a neuroscientist nor I study brain, but I know some stuff about hormones. This is a great sub and I like to improve my knowledge on a daily basis. It would be wonderful if you explain how on Earth a human gets endorphins by reading clickbaits.
TurgidMeatWand 10y ago
Bat_mayn gave a pretty solid explanation, if you want something to expound on that try watching Charlie brookers How Television Ruined Your Life: News.
I find it hilarious and insightful, fair warning if you try to show any of his other episodes to people who are plugged in they will stop watching it after 10 minutes and complain that ot is depressing.
Wtfiwwpt 10y ago
Probably something to do with titillation and a self-perpetuating loop.
[deleted] 10y ago
It's instant grat, and people only choose the clickbait they'll already know they agree/identify with.
bat_mayn 10y ago
Journalism is dead. 21st century 'journalism' is clickbait. It is specifically engineered to gain as many clicks as possible to sell those clicks to advertisers for lots of money.
In order to do this, they need to get people emotionally invested immediately. It starts with a catchy headline, then descends into emotional appeals, logical fallacies and anything designed to get the most emotion out of you as possible.
There's a term for it, it's called "outrage porn". Outrage porn is far and away the most profitable and most prevalent on the internet. You can get people angry really easily over mundane, meaningless shit. Women read it, then go on Facebook linking the article, "Get a load of this, I'm so angry, can you believe this." This is where the endorphins kick in. They are getting an endorphin high from pretending to be morally righteous or participating in a cause. There is actually no cause, they're not doing any work. Unless you take into account that they are literally working to spread clicks for the host site, because that is all they're doing.
Another classic is "disaster porn", which is old media's old world staple. Have you watched the news lately? Turn it on tonight if you haven't and pay attention to how quickly they start talking about murders, fires and tragedies. They brush over the facts, then descend into emotion. Crews will stand on site for hours trying to find one person that will cry, or get angry on camera. Then they spend the next few hours reveling in the "death toll". It's tragedy porn - people are watching it, feeling sad, and getting a rush from the quick recovery - particularly knowing they are not part of the disaster. What comes after the disaster porn? "Feel good" stories about a disabled boy wanting to be a professional baseball player, or cute animals being quirky on camera. Endorphin recovery period - cut to commercial - pharmaceutical advertisements for antidepressants, they've got you covered in America.
This is media 2.0 - being emotionally farmed for clicks.
Old journalism is not exciting. You don't go through a range of emotions reading lengthy, benign articles that are pound-for-pound all about factual information.
veggie_girl 10y ago
Welcome to the new world of female consumerism. Men may still have more money as a gender, but women are deciding how it is spent. Even in male dominated spaces like Video Gaming, the pussification is spreading.
Its to the point where if you want to do/make something manly, it's considered "hipster."
[deleted] 10y ago
It's called Yellow Journalism.
vakerr 10y ago
I saw a post a couple days ago that included this:
I think "false charity" is a pretty good description of such behavior. Status signaling their progressive sanctimony would be another way to describe this.
RedEmbrace 10y ago
To this write-up I can add a contribution in form of this video. Not for you, since you already have a decent grasp of this, but for the readers passing by.
However you haven't answered my question. The reason I called you out is because you throw out big words that sound and look good while being completely unrelated and in this case incorrect.
I'll clarify. Endorphins are in-body painkillers. This hormone is being released to mask physical pain. This what "runner's high" is. This is why gym feels good.
In other words, there is no way to get this unless you are being clickbaited on a treadmill. Dopamine I agree.
bat_mayn 10y ago
That's not necessarily true, it doesn't occur merely from physical pain but can came from things like fear or stress. As you said it's a body's natural painkiller. Elevated levels of anger, fear or anxiety trigger pretty severe levels of pain to the point where it also becomes physical.
But you're right, I was playing it hard and fast with how endorphins fit into that conversation. I'm no neuroscientist either - but in context I think it would go like this: Media triggers your outrage (fear, anxiety, anger) and your endorphins kick in to mask what your body senses as pain. Dopamine comes next along with the "feel good" stories, the high. Then comes the commercials, where (in America at least), they immediately and explicitly market selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) - otherwise known as antidepressants or anxiety medication, all to help you "cope" with the garbage emotional rollercoaster they make you ride every day. It's specifically engineered this way and they don't give a shit about you other than making sure you ride the ride every day and share it with your friends.
You can watch the news and it will be exactly like that, to the point of being surreal.
To go back on the comment you replied to, it's to keep people from working for the natural high. Creating things, being strong, independent. Instead you are constantly drugged, naturally and artificially and you remain helpless the longer you subject yourself to it.
cocaine_face 10y ago
I used to work in online media. It was precisely this.
It's entirely about how many clicks a given article could generate.
We'd put together the most unrelated crap just because it had popular keywords.
I literally wrote an article generator that could cover some of our more simple use-cases with a few variables.
Absolute garbage.
vengefully_yours 10y ago
Ad libs for the masses... Awesome. Stupid people are so much fun to play with.
ap_resurrection 10y ago
i mean, its pretty cool that people figure out how to make money - media is really only about hits, not about writing well - but it makes money so go for it - who has time to read facts and make your own judgment, just jump into the emotional aspect of it and start judging, thats what most people want to do anyway
its hilarious to me how cnn is considered to be news by so many people, but its just a blatant click bait website - if that happens to coincide with real news here and there, then wonderful, but no need
and i think people think they're smart because they are following issues
the whole situation and the stupidity behind it is one of the most intresting things ive ever encountered
i used to post for a media publication, very small one, i would write these lengthy detailed mma articles and no one gave a sht - then i started repeating the moron opinions i know other people have, and i started doing a lot better -
i think most people have this view that the media has this obligation to give the news right and fair, when in reality its fully a profit only enterprise - thats funny as hell too
if i call people on stuff like this, i get very very angry responses - and i enjoy it - people def dont enjoy the idea of being called out on how they think, esp when its asinine
cocaine_face 10y ago
When I was in media, we noticed that if you added the word, "Apple" to any article, it immediately spiked interest and increased the hit count by at least 2x. There were a few other key companies/products that would do this.
So we just went out of our way to talk about those things.
[deleted] 10y ago
You said it all. That whole kony2012 thing is a prime example that even reddit fell for. Everyone was so proud to stand behind an imaginary cause. Kony is doing fine last I heard..

I can't tell if you're being sarcastic or not, I think you are and if so 'm just an idiot, but Kony was dead before that campaign launched.

There is still plenty of quality journalism. Mostly NPR related or else major newspapers like W. Post. Radiolab is a fantastic example. There are still many quality articles being produced. Im on mobile atm but I'll link you some of them later.
Ovadox 10y ago
They have a pretty strong left bias although I still prefer NPR over conservative talk radio since that's a commercial every 30 seconds, that and those guys are more transparently full of shit. The only truth is in parallax.
Glenbert 10y ago
Agreed. I'm a pretty much a right-libertarian, but I really like NPR.
Borpilux 10y ago
I sometimes try to listen to NPR, but whenever I turn it on, it sounds like smug pimplefaces doting over insignificant crap.
Interversity 10y ago
Try more of the special pieces and podcasts. The normal news stuff can be boring. Radiolab is the basically a best of compilation.
[deleted] 10y ago
"Disaster porn" is actually much more insidious. Exposure makes people paranoid of guns and rapings and murders and child molestings and kidnappings and school shootings and "terrorists" and sports and community parks and pools and diving boards and dogs and killer germs and.... All despite the fact that the world is the safest it has ever been in the history of mankind.
Myrpl 10y ago
Yep. By making you aware of a super rare event (like a cinema massacre), you feel as if it's so possible it can happen in your theatre near you that you end up evading going to the movies for at least a week, even if you live on the other side of the planet.
"Disaster porn" in Greece is: "Country on the verge of leaving eurozone this time for sure" - daily news for the last 3 years.
Ovadox 10y ago
The world is not more safe. We've just traded getting eaten by wolves or falling into the blast furnace with developing some weird cancer because of all the synthetic chemicals in our food or getting maimed in a car accident.
vengefully_yours 10y ago
Shit, just in my 40+ years the world has become bubble wrapped. Wreck a 65 vintage car at 45mph you get fucked up. Wreck a 2015 at 95mph you walk away unless it's some bizzare kind of thing.
More military men were killed on 6 June 1944 than in the entirety of Iraq and Afghanistan. Including the Iraqis and taliban. One day vs 13 years. Even in Detroit you're relatively safe unless you go prancing around being stupid.
[deleted] 10y ago
You're not totally wrong; it depends on how you define the word "safety". I defined "safety" to mean all the things that people think might kill or harm you, and the media (i.e. "disaster porn") is overwhelmingly responsible for which things your amygdala thinks might kill or harm you. This is what most people think of when they think of safety.
Perhaps you'd prefer to live a life of 14^th century physical unsafety in order to be utterly safe from the cultural ravishment of progressivism.

blue_27 10y ago
There are a lot more people since the time we had to fear wolves. How do you account for the increase in the population?
Ovadox 10y ago
Improvements to agriculture combined with access to fossil fuel energy. Population increases when there is surplus food. We aren't much different than yeast in that regard.
blue_27 10y ago
Well, does that mean the world is more safe, or less safe for ... yeast?

[deleted] 10y ago
I was born in 1980 so I don't think I ever experienced this but I believe at some point —at least a silent majority— the virtue of journalism was alive.
Speech from the film Network.
whitey_male 10y ago
I think journalism was a bit better in my boomer parents younger or middle aged years but I don't think it added up to much.
The media is shit and a joke. But we also neglect to recognise the horrendous lack of quality that the people have as well. They go hand in hand I think.
It wasn't me treating my news site like it was a glossy gossip mag, clicking on that shit. But most people did.
Not only that but the "revolutionary" side of politics and society has been commandeered by the SJWs. So it's probably smarter to just read the gossip shit.
[deleted] 10y ago
Good point.
Personally, I can't blame it too much on SJWs. I was around for the Bush years and the media was just as ridiculous. The people were just as bad, too. Shit like calling "French Fries" "Freedom Fries" and pouring French wine in the streets. I've seen people go full retard in both directions. It's nuts.
whitey_male 10y ago
Yeah I'm thinking about 10-20 years before that. But whatevs.
I think the internet has destroyed news a lot. Constantly having to fill their sites with shit. So they go out of their way to find a gaff, or to find something that might offend somebody.
But yeah the main thing is the media is owned by the rich so it's designed to primarily help them.
I think SJWs are the main problem. I blame them entirely. Because everyone else is too scared shitless to protest about things because the protest has to fit very strict SJW guidelines. For instance men wouldn't be able to protest how unfair divorce laws are, even if they only wanted to nudge them a little way back towards their favour. You'd have a whole heap of screaming hippies doing a counter protest at you calling you misogynist, girl bashers, the whole bit.
this_guy2001 10y ago
Nah. I'm kind of jaded like that. Just like every sub and thread on this site, they all tell it how they want to tell it. I believe it has always been this way.
abdada 10y ago
Think about the "reward" element of endorphin rushes. Clickbait mimics some of this by saying "You will NEVER believe what..." in a similar path as "you will NEVER be able to lift 150#" or "you will NEVER be able to get that HB9s phone number".
DogInTheBath 10y ago
My girlfriend gets all her news from buzzfeed. Its very frustrating to watch but try convincing her its bullshit and I get a blank dead-eye stare.

darthsmokey 10y ago

abdada 10y ago
There are almost no reliable news sites anymore.
I like Reason.com (libertarian leaning) for some casual browsing, but 99% of the time I actually read the news, I think "WTF does this have to do with my life? Nothing."
Wtfiwwpt 10y ago
Keep and eye on TechDirt.com too. It's pretty solid.

SilentForTooLong 10y ago
How does jumping harddrive prices affect you unless you deal in hard drives every day?... I don't buy a new harddrive every day. Do you?
[deleted] 10y ago
[deleted]
SilentForTooLong 10y ago
Yeah, ok? Why did you need to hear about it in the news? You go online, you look at NewEgg, and you see the harddrives are all $200 instead of the usual $100, then you're like "oh fuck, guess I better wait till they get cheaper." Why did the news need to report that to you? It doesn't really make sense to me. I would like to understand, but it seems like something only relevant to a specific group of people (people who need to buy harddrives just at that precise time), and it doesn't seem to do anything to help them at all, since they would've found the prices had risen on their own rather quickly.
In fact, I almost wonder if that is why news is the way it is. You would probably never discover a skateboarding dog in some small beach city, or a video of a cat falling 10 stories and living or some shit without the news reporting it. But the people that harddrive prices concerned would rapidly find out about the prices on their own since information is so readily available. Perhaps information being so readily available simply means that type of news is no longer necessary, and the void is filled by affective news that is basically trivial, but still delivers the only type of information that interested audiences would not typically come across of their own accord?
[deleted] 10y ago
The price of hard drives doubling could affect your life. Goats in baby pajamas could not. One is news, at least, though admittedly not particularly relevant.
SilentForTooLong 10y ago
What kind of effect is it that is being aimed for exactly, and to whom as a potential audience? It seems ostensible to me that seeing pictures of cute baby goats will immediately have an affect on many people's lives in terms of increasing their happiness momentarily, brightening their day quickly so to speak. That's an effect, isn't it?
So should all news concentrate on potential economic effects? Political? idk
I guess I can see the point, but I don't really know how to quantify what the news really ought to be. But going by the "immediately relevant to the most people's lives" metric is horrible. The baby goats would probably win going by that metric, unless you define the type of effect more precisely.
[deleted] 10y ago
News is (was) about the dissemination of current events. A really big flood, even a really big flood halfway across the world, is an event—i.e. news. Whether it's newsworthy or not depends on a combination of its objective significance and the degree to which it affects the life of the reader. Goats in baby pajamas may be pleasant for the viewer—something that cannot be said for coverage of "discrimination" and "save the children!" and suchlike—but it's not an event, it's not news, and it's not newsworthy.
SilentForTooLong 10y ago
You just made statements, you didn't give any criteria for determining when an event is news/newsworthy.
[deleted] 10y ago
I find it strange how this got popular at all - the first place I got acquainted with the "I'm offended and demand justice," rhetoric? Radical Islamists. They literally used "I'm offended" as reason enough to demand legal procedures. And my government actually played ball for a while, but then their tolerance policy started to resemble a disgusting truth; tolerance of intolerance.
Feminists are using exactly the same tactics as Radical Islamists in my country. The newest buzzword to strong-arm someone in politics these days, again in my country, is "discrimination," so when I hear that now I don't even bother to pay attention about the issue. It's immediately been tainted by bad arguments and spineless politicians.
Destroyer_Wes 10y ago
I have been saying this for years but every time I talk about it everyone is offended
VasiliyZaitzev 10y ago
When someone shrieks "I'm OFFENDED!!!" what they really mean is that they lack the required maturity to control their own emotions and expect the rest of us to do it for them, less their carefully constructed "feelings" get tweaked.

Emma Sulkowicz wasn't sued because it wouldn't be profitable for the guy she screwed over to do so... he sued the school and it's president.

[deleted] 10y ago
"girls cant be sex offenders"
j0hnan0n 10y ago
I love when people tell me they're offended. My response is always a variation on the theme of "So what you're saying is...I should censor myself and my speech because you can't control your own emotions. It's the mark of an educated mind to be able to consider an idea without necessarily having to accept it. Would you rather I be honest with you and tell the truth, or would you rather I lie and try not to offend you?"
I love being labeled by people. I like to turn the tables and label them right back. As soon as they identify as feminist, I like to label them of being a chauvinistic female supremacist. When they try to backtrack, I remind them that if they want HUMAN equality, they should identify as HUMANIST. If they want female supremacy, they should continue to identify as feminist. I don't identify as a masculinist, but as a humanist, because I believe in human equality (for they purposes of winning the argument, gents. All men are not created equal, and men are not created equal to women.)
The looks on their faces are always worth the tiny bit of energy and attention. They certainly don't deserve that attention, but I consider it well worth my time.

The last round of generational rot. Subversion of your enemy's children is the gift that keeps on giving.
SJWs are simply millennials who have learned that they can exploit the twisted values of the hippies (who are now in power) for attention and personal gain. The difference between hippies and SJWs is that the hippies believe their own bullshit. SJWs are completely disingenuous.
99639 10y ago
Just because their positions are obviously absurd and contradictory doesn't mean they see them that way. You give the SJW's far too much credit. Some of them really are simply that stupid. The cognitive dissonance you expect them to have to lie to overcome simply never occurs in the first place. They do not deeply examine their beliefs and arrive at any conclusion, they just believe what they've been told by other SJW's (the SJW narrative after all is unopposed in the mainstream education system, media, and workplace).

What's interesting here is that, despite having a scientific background, he addresses the question, textually, like a lawyer... addressing the ethics and legality of preventing people from having children, instead of the advisability of it.
There's no inherent problem with a population taking steps to limit its growth rate if it deems that advisable.
But the specific steps the liberals have taken seem almost purpose-built to destroy First World societies. The impediments imposed to breeding have the most impact on the professional classes, while those on the public dole are being paid to breed.
Truly, these people are so short-sighted that they would set fire to the kingdom if by doing so, they could rule over the ashes that remained.

In the most direct, ecological sense, he is right; human reproduction will have to be managed in the future.
Now there are myriad ways this could happen. Tighter birth control, incentivizing lower birth rates, or better application of market forces and the real costs of reproduction, to name a few.
But the fact remains that humans will have to sort the issue.

Pre-red pill and currently I've found the more offensive I be publicly, the more people want to be my friend.

This isn't new, it's been like this for quite a while. This idea that you have the right to go through life un-offnded is wrong, immoral, and dangerous. It's a large part of why things are fucked to hell now.

I have ptsd, it's not exactly fun. Shit triggers me every day, sometimes a flashback, sometimes intense anger stemming from flight or fight being stuck in the fight mode.
Do I try to make the world change to fit me? Fuck no. I deal with that shit and try not to kill anyone. Do I sit home all day afraid of what might be out there? No, because I have shit I want to do. Muffins won't give you this shit, and I'm sick of people using it as a self diagnosed excuse to be lazy, stay home, or try to make everyone around them bend to their bullshit. Don’t try to hit me with your car and you're probably quite safe.

People don't have enough real problems. Very little of this shit would have flown far during the Great Depression. It's also hard to care about any of this crap when you're constantly exerting your extra energy in the gym and toward your hobbies.

A major war in our lifetime is probable. Meanwhile US society and in particular the US military has embarked on its warped crusade for "social justice" and so does not have good prospects in such conflict. Perhaps it will take the devastation of war to bring society's moral compass to normality.

Figured I would sit on the couch this morning before work with my wife for a few extra minutes and there was some talk show on and the hosts were comparing their predilections for binge-watching Netflix, so I just said, "welp, time to go to work"
choicemeats 10y ago
I'm not perfect at it yet, but I consume almost no media before work and very little after work. If I'm home I'm most likely shooting bad guys online or watching a show or working on my budget/personal projects. If I'm out, I'm out.
pnw_diver 10y ago
We are a rich society. Perhaps in a rich society people have time to indulge in that bullshit.
SilentForTooLong 10y ago
Logic has never been in vogue, don't kid yourself.
And news media has been built off of selling hysteria forever.
Free speech is still pretty alive, no need to be histrionic. You don't actually get tossed in a gulag for saying any of the things you posited. Maybe called some bad names by some morons, but that's quite a ways away from being but in prison because of it, which is what happens when free speech is actually gone.
[deleted] 10y ago
news was not this shitty decades ago. have you watched your average nightly news broadcast these days? right now i think the story that takes up the lion's share of the time is bruce jenner, or whatever his name is now
free speech is alive, but to a lesser degree. The guy who said "fuck her right in the pussy" on the news in Canada lost his job due to SJW, for example. That one guy who took a picture with a plastic Darth Vader to send to his kids and then was chased through a store and had his picture posted online as a 'local pedophile' is another example of SJW retardation.
Somehow, in a time when the most amount of information has ever been available to us, people have somehow gotten dumber. More people today than ever before struggle with even eating the correct amount of food for a human, one of the most basic things to living. People have been caring less about reality and more about feels in an increasing trend. In the UK they are banning thin women on ads, in France they have 'outlawed' thin models. Why? because fat bitches are sad.
I'm not saying people were 100% logical before, but it seems like we've hit an all-time low and all you need to do to get your point across is get a bunch of fat hoes to sign a changeorg petition

SilentForTooLong 10y ago
I'm going to copy and paste another comment of mine here, I'm curious what you think of this theory, since you brought up the incredible amount of information we now have access to, I think that may actually be the key to the whole thing:
[deleted] 10y ago
hmm no i dont think so, because those same people spend their lunch breaks or spare time on twitter/phone looking up info on the same shit
it's like they like to look up stupid useless shit themselves, and then they like to watch the news afterwards to hear more about it.
the media companies today basically have the people of today figured out, show them something that is scary or controversial and then milk it. If they can misreport some incident to create controversy, that's even better (examples: treyvon/zimmerman & the baltimore situation)
Christian_Kong 10y ago
Its a product of the times. The mid 20somethings and below were grown to be pussies. I started noticing this shit somewhere near the end of the 90's and it's more prevalent than ever. What do you expect when people are coddled their whole lives.......they cant deal with the real world once out there.
What really gets me is that people are getting offended more than ever and since they can't deal with it(as I believe most adults should be able to) they want everyone to change their ways to make a safe environment for themselves and other thin skinned people.
vengefully_yours 10y ago
I see a strange mixture of entitled, overconfident, pussified, and bafflingly unaware tendencies in teens and 20 somethings. Shit like driving through traffic making people avoid you while nearly causing accidents, then when confronted about it call them names and threaten older much larger males. What kind of thinking results in that other than being given everything, being bubble wrapped, and never dealing with the consequences of your actions. Just 20 years ago that would result in an ass beating, but now they remain blissfully unaware of how close death is to them.
Theres a difference between thinking you're bullet proof and being this way. My generation has severely fucked up it's kids.
blandboringusername 10y ago
I wonder if we're going to see a big Bernie Sanders-style left swing in the next election if the disenfranchised millennials show up to vote?
Part of me wants to sit back and eat popcorn while the pissed off millennials revert the top tax bracket back to 1950s levels and make tuition free and federal student loans refinanceable. The Koch brothers would literally shit themselves.
[deleted] 10y ago
I think a lot of it has to do with college transforming from a period of transitioning to adult hood into not 4, but 5 years of joke majors followed by living with your parents again when you graduate
vengefully_yours 10y ago
Better solution, military time right out of high school. Sink or swim, fuck ups get burned, then college after service.
The problem from the standpoint of a former NCO is i don't want a horde of soft fuck ups crowding everything. Of course they tend to weed themselves out, like 6 new kids who decided doing coke on base and selling it to other young enlisted was a grand idea. The lightest one got was ten years. 19 to 29 in federal prison then all kinds of bad shit follows. He might be getting out this year. I guess it's one way to learn about consequences.

Parents to student: Learn! Your teacher is right, what you wrote makes no sense!!
Now:
Teacher to student: What you wrote makes no sense
Parents to teacher: HOW DARE YOU ATTACK OUR SON?!!? HE JUST HAS DIFFERENT PERCEPTION OF THINGS!!!!!
ilikeurbootyimnotgay 10y ago
You're exactly right. I have a teacher friend who had a parent say her child "Would have an 'A' and no less." The student was barely passing with a 70. She did not receive an A, and the mom shit bricks at the administration. So much entitlement in this world right now.

This shit. ... My recent ex had a kid who expected an apology from his math teacher, because he got yelled at for fucking around in class. ... So, he needed an apology before he could do his work? The kid is a C- student anyway, so it doesn't really matter in the long run, but demanding an apology from a teacher? I kinda wish I could see this kid go through Parris Island in 5 years.
If I'd gotten yelled at by my teacher, my parents would have (correctly) assumed that I did something wrong, worthy of getting yelled at. I can't imagine that these soft ass kids are going to make a strong society. That is simply illogical.
holytrpbatman 10y ago
It's even funnier how hard they think they are...
vengefully_yours 10y ago
No shit, especially when they happen to be tall. 6'4 with 11" arms and a very soft appearance trying to intimidate a 5"8 hard looking man with 21"arms. The hilarious thing is they truly believe they can win, because they've never been tested.
blue_27 10y ago
Or how hard they think they have it. When I was with his mom, she was complaining about all of the leaves and dog shit in their backyard. This was before Christmas. So, I told her that she was lucky she had a 12-year old indentured servant, and that her kid should rake the leaves. He started the job, but then came three months of excuses why he couldn't finish. Not my yard, and not my kid, so I just observed. 3 fucking months to do 2 hours worth of yardwork. But he had plenty of time to play his XBOX, while he was getting C's and D's. Life is going to kick this kid square in the nuts one day, and he's going to be confused as hell about it.
NewPlanNewMan 10y ago
Precisely why we RPers need to stop wasting time chasing tail and assert our role in larger society. Feminazis and their White Knights have outflanked us precisely because they're organized, they're loud, and most of us are content to control our own lives. But as you see, we can't just leave society to its own devices without it eventually taking away our ability to control our own destinies.
The time has come for men to be men and stop accepting this bullshit as somebody else's problem.
[deleted]
NewPlanNewMan 10y ago
Fair. But then they shouldn't complain about society if they're not willing to work to change it. Like it or not, Tumblristas are more interested in social change, however bat-shit they may seem to us.
InferiousX 10y ago
It's not so much that I don't think it's everyone's problem. Rather, I feel as though things have already slid so far in so many facets that things have enough momentum to cause the big societal crash regardless.
Even if I wanted to save the world, I don't even completely believe it's possible. Maybe my sentiment will change. But as if right now, it is where it is.
NewPlanNewMan 10y ago
Fair enough. Just be prepared. That's all I ask.
InferiousX 10y ago
That's exactly the plan. Do the best for me, mine and anyone else who I feel is prepared to listen.
Nothing_Gazes_Back 10y ago
But to what ends? The betterment of our common man? I've built myself from the ground up and they're capable of doing the same. If the majority of men want to give up and roll over then that's not my problem.
Us demanding that the world conform to our way of thinking will never work because it requires effort and a lot of willpower to educate yourself and change how you look at the world. It's much easier to live in ignorance and let female driven media sculpt you into an exploitable little mangina. Hell, the more BP men in the world the higher the demand for real men becomes.
this_guy2001 10y ago
"The accumulated filth of all their sex and murder will foam up about their waists and all the whores and politicians will look up and shout 'Save us!'... and I'll whisper 'no.'"
pheluhnee 10y ago
This is an interesting quote put at an interesting time. Rorshach was absolutely immovable in his beliefs and his moral compass.
He also died meaninglessly.
this_guy2001 10y ago
IDK. He died for what he stood for. He couldn't live knowing he had a hand in an evil plot for the "good of mankind". Everyone else agreed that this is the way things had to be, but Rorschach would have rather been killed than to have that on his conscience.
"DO IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
NewPlanNewMan 10y ago
Us demanding the world conform is how Western Civilization was built. Competition is good. Conflict is good. Think about the great leaders of history? Did they worry about their contemporary's consent, or did they snatch greatness from the clutch of mediocrity by force?
It most certainly is your problem, as a sinking ship dooms all passengers, guilty or not.
[deleted]
Nothing_Gazes_Back 10y ago
In the grand scheme of things you are absolutely correct. But personally, I don't feel that I have any obligation to help shape the global consciousness.
Society will always follow the motions of a pendulum. As we swing towards the thin skinned SJW outlook then there will inevitably be a greater need for places like TRP. That's going to happen regardless of whether or not I help get the word out, and frankly on an individual level I benefit from every other man that wastes away into a BB. Maybe I'm being narcissistic here but why should I, or any of us for that matter, care if other men succeed or not?
NewPlanNewMan 10y ago
Not an obligation, an imperative of self-preservation. If we cede control, we write our own epitaph.
KingoftheAssholes 10y ago
Doing nothing actually does alot. Sure feninazi are starting to push hard. But you have ask yourself why. The answer is simple. Men are slowly starting to wake up. TRP, MGTOW, even Men rights are examples have this.
blandboringusername 10y ago
The MGTOW guys have the most powerful weapon IMHO. It's a weapon of peace. A simple boycott of the old school 1950s married-with-children beta bucks life that "independent" post-wall wizard sleeve slags want to cling to when they finally get tired of their awesome 9-5 grind in the HR department processing grievances and ruining careers for every imagined slight.
NewPlanNewMan 10y ago
But they're not our target audience. 90% of the population lives in the middle. If we can win the ideological debate, it doesn't matter whether our opponents come around. They can continue to spew their hate-speech ad infinitum, but if their message can't resonate, it can't hurt us. I just don't want to see this movement become reactionary, because at a distance, people won't be able to tell which one of us are the radicals.
KingoftheAssholes 10y ago
Movement? TRP is not a movement. MRA is a movement. Sexual strategy is discuss here not how to fight feminism. And as for ideology being brought to the people in the middle well this is what happens when you try to do that. https://youtu.be/GO_X4DkwA_Q
NewPlanNewMan 10y ago
How can you read this comments and say that with a straight face?
this_guy2001 10y ago
Gen X was a cool name. Y and Z are fucking stupid.

Wtfiwwpt 10y ago
Yeah, it's a dark time for free speech. If I had any children of the right age group, I would not allow them to even go to a college until I spent serious time seeing if it is home to the professionally offended, weak-minded, students and professors.

Jerry seinfeld was on The Herd today and he asked why americans have to apologize so much any time they speak their minds. The shaming that goes on is outrageous.
Any time a person says can i just have a minute to adjust to this new thing (for example people getting sex changes) everyone becomes offended. Chris rock refuses to perform comedy at college campuses.
I think its sad. How do you become a better society where there's no freedom of thought or opinion? Moreover, the SJW police don't REALLY care about the issue. Its "I'm offended" for 5 minutes and then on to the next. My mom was physically abused. My gf was raped as a child. That shit really offends me. But when people come out and get on their high horse and say things like "ray rice should be banned for life," its BS. You didn't care before, youll tear this man's entire life apart (and also his wife's bc she needs his income, who you claim to be supporting) because he made one mistake. One mistake and your entire life is over. Its literally insane.
blue_27 10y ago
They want "equality", but if Ray Rice had hit a man who had struck him, it would have been a non-issue, and he'd still have his career.
All women who hit men should be considered as (at least temporarily) gender-identifying as a dude.
[deleted] 10y ago
OP you realize you started your post saying being offended is our favorite past time, then you listed things that offend you.
Oh the irony

western civilization has gotten too comfortable. In third-world countries, where most people biggest concern is how to put food on the table, and even the ones that are slightly better off have to work their ass off in school if they want to make it, you won't see people worrying about stupid shit like micro-aggressions, mansplaining, triggers etc.
In the west, most people have unreasonably high living standards. Thus, they need to look for things to be outraged over.
[deleted] 10y ago
When you give people so much, they only want more and more...
Wtfiwwpt 10y ago
Yep. Their lives are meaningless unless they can find some "outrage" to fight against.

Not in third world countries? Ha. You should come to Chile. Or better said, you shouldn't.
razor5151 10y ago
I'm from a third world country myself. And apart from the big cities, like the national capital and a few others, you usually won't find girls parroting this nonsense. Even then, only the ones that are rich enough to not care about academics or getting a job.
slcjosh 10y ago
We have raised a society for two or more generations with a victim mentality. It is much easier to be a victim than to take responsibility.
