can our actions (and thoughts, philosophy) in our daily lives affect testosterone levels? if we consciously decide to take more risks even though we feel afraid, will testosterone increase? or vice-versa - if we decide to play it safe in life, will testosterone drop? both scenarios assume you're staying healthy: getting enough sleep and exercise, have a balanced diet, don't stress out much.
i'm debating the plausibility of the "winner-effect": winners of a competition get a testosterone boost and losers experience a drop. if this phenomenon is based in fact, i wonder if the losers of the competition still yield more testosterone than those who avoided participating in the competition in the first place.
i always thought testosterone is determined strictly by genetics and healthiness (unless taken exogenously).

YES.
Lifting will increase testosterone. Sparring consistently in a boxing gym will increase testosterone. Eating meat & removing vices will increase testosterone. Lowering your bodyfat (up to a certain point) will increase testosterone.
Men in prison develop higher testosterone levels from the immense pressure & fight for survival. Stress will also increase testosterone.

I know about about lifting, diet, or keeping a healthy bodyfat, but didn't know about sparring having that effect.
this is what I was pondering.
at what point does stress stop increasing your testosterone and becomes detrimental to health? how do we discern that limit?

That's a good question that I honestly can't give you a definitive answer on.
However, I do think that stress combined with the ability to do something about the thing causing stress will lead to increase testosterone and dopamine in conjunction with your progress/effort in achieving said goal (of removing stressor).
People who stress about things outside of their control will decrease testosterone because progression cannot be made in changing things outside of your control.
This is all theory from my knowledge on psychology and endocrinology

There studies in which losers of football games (even fans) have drops in testosterone after their team loses

I'm not much into philosophy.
Test can increase with lifting weights, especially heavy weights. I think heavy cardio actually decreases it, not sure about that.
Test can be impacted by your diet. If you are fat, your test goes lower, etc. sure being healthy and sleep I'm sure impact it.
Test is naturally lowered as you get older.
But, risk taking? Never heard of that. and how'd it be defined? playing the stock market? race car driving? taking my harley on the jersey turnpike? That would scare that hell out of me
AbusiveFather1 1y ago
all of these. higher test levels pushes people to take more risks; you've been lifting heavy weights for the past 6 months and now it's easier to take the harley on the jersey turnpike than it was before, but i wonder if it works in reverse as well - does taking risks, or doing things that you find scary, raise your testosterone levels?
