Common law marriage is becoming less common... not more.
You can "thank" 2nd wave feminism and the Sexual Revolution for that. It used to be that a woman lost a lot of status by sleeping around or shacking up, and "Common law marriage" was a way to prevent the poor, misguided damsels from being taken advantage of by bad men who just wanted what all men want, amirite?
It's not like adult women should be expected to exercise their agency, right?
But after the start of the Sexual Revolution such thinking was viewed as hopelessly old-fashioned. By explicitly linking sex and living together with marriage, Common law marriage "trapped" sexually-liberated women into marriages they never agreed to - which is hopelessly patriarchal, donchaknow - so it had to be done away with.
Nothing that imposes obligations on women may exist because "Patriarchy"... or something.
In the US there are only a handful of places where such laws remain on the books, and they are almost never "enforced" anyway. (By "enforced" I mean the courts getting involved and treating people who live together as if they are legally married.)
In a society wherein there are no social or legal ramifications for women being sluts, "Common law marriage" is contraindicated.
