I'm basically unemployable due to my age and work history. I spent 11 years in IT working up the ladder from Tier1 support ->tier2 -> NOC -> web development(vbscript) -> database dev(SQL, RDBMS, ODBC) -> coding(c++)
I got replaced by cheap H1-B workers from India so I started my own company consulting for small-medium businesses installing networks, servers, firewalls, etc. I was last active in that in 2005 when I got replaced by one-click installations, wifi, etc.
So anyway it's not hard for me to jump back into things, refresh my memory, maybe learn a new language. I'd prefer something I can do remotely and I'd prefer to bypass the HR Karens by being a contractor. So what do I need to do for that in this day and age given my background?

do some training on python, there's stuff online (free) on it. Learn it in regards/simultaneous with Microsoft Azure.
The cloud is a great field for this and will be for years, especially the guys who learn the automation part of it.

Cool! Thanks! I can do the frontend dev and it will complement my skills to make me a full stack dev.

Best resource is FreeCodeCamp youtube channel, it's an absolute gold mine.
Given your background I'd assume you wouldn't want to do front-end, could look at becoming a back-end developer. In my experience the majority of jobs use some form of Python, but C++ is still pretty prevalent so you might be able to find something with that. I'd also lie a bit on your resume, a lot of the technologies jobs demands are learnable in like a day, it's the same shit just different syntax
A lot of jobs are remote, but a lot of the more prestigious companies do LeetCode style algorithm/data structures interview questions which aren't too fun

Unfortunately I'm not sure, I've only worked full time remote at 3 different companies. I've never had to deal with HR beyond getting hired, maybe it's because it's remote
