I plan to work as an engineer in a big tech company in the future and vigorously chase after promotions and whatnot. Of course, higher position means more money, power, status, and dominance over others but you also have much more responsibility. I enjoy my free time and don't want work to consume my life. What are your guys' thoughts on this?

I would work to save money/ build connections, then go freelance or found your own company when you feel ready.
If you really want to go the corporate route, I'd recommend reading '48 laws of power'. I recommend that book everywhere but I really wished that I've read it before I started working as a wage slave. You don't have to work hard, prove yourself or give 100% of your effort everytime. Most of the time success comes from being smartly obedient

Then you chose the wrong approach. “Work life balance” is something companies that matter use to pick off the weak, especially in the cut throat backstab happy environment of corpo land.

Turn on, tune in, drop out.
Join Big Tech for 3 or 4 years, then drop out and start your own consultancy / startup business.

You should ultimately do what makes you happy, there are other things in life that will make you happier than money. However there is merit in trying to climb the corporate ladder, you will learn how to make connections, how to navigate difficult situations, how to be a leader, how to be responsible and get work done on time and even exceed expectations.
If your goal is to ultimately start a business of your own, then climbing the corporate ladder from Engineer to director and above is not a bad idea as you will learn a lot about how a business is run and make the right contacts that will help you one day.
Just make sure you still have enough time to grow in the other areas of your life and find healthy ways to manage the stress that comes with such a job, such as stoic meditation. Look up Marcus Aurelius, Seneca, epictetus, etc.
Think about it this ways, Marcus Aurelius managed the whole roman empire during a time of war and plague, and he was able to handle the stress and time of his job while also having a large family, great friends and he became a great man, a philosopher king. A corporate job is peanuts compared to what he had to do, you're a man, you have it in you to get this done.

Thanks bro. Honestly, being a man almost feels like a super-power if you know to channel it.

You got it dude, that's exactly how you should think about it. The red pill is about understanding the power you have as a man once you channel it properly and master your mind and your emotions. Men started with a world full of nothing but hunger and danger, and went from being cave men to creating amazing societies full of wonder, architecture, art, music. Men invented every single profession we have today while women were doing their hair and gossiping around the camp fire. You have unlimited potential and I'm glad you realised that!

Jee, sounds like me when I was young and dumb. You can't get rich working for someone else. You have to own the means of production. In corporations everyone is replaceable and it is becoming more and more dominated by Karens.

how would you have played it, knowing everything you know now? (if you were poor and didn't have the money to start shit)

I'd hit the gym and sell my ass to guys. Save up enough to get into wheel options on S&P 500. Once I had enough that I didn't need to sell my ass, I'd give it away free to guys I want to get with. I'm hypersexual and bi so YMMV.

I think most people would agree if you have that drive and ambition, to be your own boss through creating your own business rather than earning a management position for someone else. Maybe thats more of a lifelong goal. You can do both: Corporate climb to gain experience and knowledge/connections and then eventually create your own business in the same field with your new expertise

You have a point. Perhaps I create a start-up in college.

you can make a good living as a techie. The higher up you go, the less time you typically have, you have more responsibilities and/or have to schmooze with the crowd above you and your peers.
I turned down VP jobs because of this. I stayed in tech position, more middle mgmt. Do well, but I have time off also and can enjoy things.
So, it depends really on what you want. do you want to make 500K/year, be a big whig? Or do you want to go fishing on the weekends or whatever? I know of very few guys at VP level or higher, who's weekends or vacations are free from work.

Assuming I don't start my own business, this is what I plan to do. Go for senior engineer or principal engineer but not beyond that.
