I’m 19 and have a pressure washing business.
Just saw a yt video where one of the companies in my city was talking about how he made 1 million in sales this last year. I made 14k since starting back in March.
This inspired & intimidated me. He started his company at my age and I want to be where he’s at. I’m afraid I won’t be able to surpass him given how much he’s built and how he dominates our city.
How can I get over this? I know I shouldn’t give up, but I’m afraid eventually he’ll be so big that I won’t have any room to grow.
What do y’all think of this? I’m thinking of working for him to see how I can improve my own business.

Go door to door with flyers. Start mapping out neighborhoods. Or you could pay a marketing company to blitz a few zip codes. Advertise on your vehicle. Know your competition. Work with the small business administration. Be the best at what you do. There are so many incompetent tradesmen right now it has never been easier.

Undercut his prices or do a better job. If he is making that much in sales he obvious has staff who don't care as much about his business as you do for your own.
If Ur extraverted, put on your charm and start cold calling. Build a professional website etc!

Got tuned down during pandemic and I can say it was great thing to focus on alternatives and upgrades. I like the question always - who am I and why people would buy from me? Bring the roots in, yourself in and your "cherry on top".
Working for others sometimes works for ideas and new perspectives, but if you have running business, does it will affect your thing?
Have you tried marketing strategies - analysis?
Be strong,

One of the most important things in business is networking. In order to grow you will need people with a variety of skills that you don't have. When you hire someone to help with things like marketing, you want people that come recommended. If you join an entrepeneur group or small business owners club, you can meet people dealing with similar problems who can help you with solutions and contacts to get the things you need done. Knowing adults with businesses and contacts is a big plus. If your mom's friend Cheryl is an office manager, pick her brain. If your Dad's buddy runs a tackle shop, have a chat about your business.
Often the most effective marketing is free and time consuming. A poster at the local gas stations. Coffee shop bulletin boards. A daily craigslist posting, etc. Even a few magnet signs on your truck or van will drum business.
Don't worry about the competition. Pressure washing is a non-essential activity for many. Having more people in your area doing pressure washing is likely to drive more pressure washing business for both of you. Just getting people thinking about it is good for you. Having competitors can help drive sales.
The other thing is to always be actively learning the business skills from people you hire to help. Learn to do your books right, learn to do marketing, etc. You don't need to learn to do things you will always hire out like graphics. But take the time to learn everything else. Make people you hire walk you through how and why they did things.

Undercutting prices isn't the worst thing-- provided you don't get yourself into a race to the bottom. In theory, as a smaller operation with fewer employees, you should be able to operate more cheaply. But you don't want to give away the bank, either.
Focus on being the guy that can show up the day after you're called. Quick, responsive service, and quality work. You're having to build a reputation with every job.
