I've read that it's very important to learn how to breathe properly, but I just don't get it.
I feel like I "Breathe" correctly, my belly is rising without my shoulders/chest going up, but I FEEL like I'm inhaling less air than I do when I breathe from my chest/shoulders.
Is this normal when starting out? Is this how it should feel? is the "feeling" just a mask and that I'm actually inhaling more than before?

As a long time singer, breathing into diaphragm is the same kind of inhale you do when startled/shocked.

There is a bit of tension and relaxation that comes with unlearning tense breathing. I meditate, so I'm fairly used to it. Hard to diagnose from here, though.
Most noticeable when I transition from realizing I'm breathing rather tensely to deep breathing. Mostly from "email apnea"

You shouldn’t just breathe into your belly but in a 360 degree fashion into your sides, lower back, and belly. Breathe in through your nose. Fill the bottom of your lungs first, then let your rib cage and chest expand for the very end of the breath. Don’t let your shoulders rise. You want to create a cylinder of air pressure throughout your whole torso.
Pelvic position is important. If you have APT then there won’t be a good flat surface for your lungs to expand against to create intra abdominal pressure (IAP).
Learning proper breathing to create IAP is very important for lifting and posture.
It might be challenging at first, but that’s because the motor patterns are weak from disuse. Just keep practicing.

By that logic so is proper posture. That's largely unconscious but we know you can fix that.

The two are inextricably intertwined.

I'm wondering how you came to write such a meaningless comment, honestly.
I was not thinking about breathing my whole life prior, and as it turns out, I was NOT breathing "normally".
If I stop thinking about it, I will go back to breathing "normally", which is what I'm used to - aka breathing wrong.
I'm gonna give you some benefit of doubt in that you can actually expand on your comment in an actual meaningful way, because right now, it sounds like nonsense blue-pill mess only a newcomer could write.

Hmmm, interesting.

So basically, what you are saying is that all the advice on diaphragm breathing everywhere online etc is actually wrong?

That said, I actually do think 2% is a lot in the long run. I'm 19, 2% over the course of 50\~ something years is something that adds up, but alright... 2% better or not just for the inhaling, that's one thing. Doesn't diaphragm breathing lowers your voice? I've heard also some other minor benefits. If not for breathing, perhaps it's worth doing it for the other reasons? Or are they wrong as well?

lets talk Gentleman.
Proper breathing is NOT something any of us were taught. Most of us are either Chest breathers or Belly Breathers. As a matter of fact, the way you breathe dictates the frequency that you keep your brain in. Almost all people are ....in Beta breathing (surprised? see: https://www.reddit.com/r/asktrp/comments/344392/am\_i\_a\_beta\_faggot\_an\_asktrp\_faq/ ) Stress is also highest when in Beta breathing mode. Deep breathing, as i will describe below, induces Theta and Delta brainwaves.
"Delta waves are associated with deepest level of relaxation, deep healing and regeneration. "
" Theta waves are associated with intuition, deep relaxation, creativity, visualization, hypnosis, light sleep, and the semi-hypnotic state between sleep and wakefulness. "
A Full Breath is as follows:
i will preface this by saying that unless you are doing specific breathing exercises which require you to breath into or out of the mouth, ALL BREATHING is to be done through the nose. ALL OF IT. there are a lot of reasons for it, but the very least of them is that its a filter, use it, you don't want to be a mouth breather. matter of fact, if you are a mouth breather just changing to breathing i through your nose will have an appreciable impact.
now.....
1 - sit the fuck down. exhale everything you've got. push out with your belly, with force, dont go making yourself pass out, use discretion. exhale out of the belly, lungs, chest, shoulders, feel all that STALE AIR being pushed out. again, use your common sense here, don't go passing out, i take no responsibility for your lack of care! once all of the air is gone....
2 - inhale FIRST into the belly, you may place your hand on your belly to feel the air inflate, once your belly is sufficiently full, THEN you are to breathe into your lungs/chest,starting at the base of the lugs (visualization really helps here) feel the lungs and chest fill with air, once they are sufficiently full, your shoulders will rise. this is a complete In Breath.
optional part 2B - hold this breath. for a second for 2. this is actually very advanced stuff, so practice with caution and if you have any issues stop, consult a book/internet friend/real friend/martial arts teacher/yoga teacher/ti chi teacher etc etc etc on breathing Techniques (or ask me, ive got at least 1 book id be happy to send along)
3 - Now to exhale: Reverse the process. feel the FIRST air out of the belly, then exhale the air out of the chest
and allow the shoulders lower, finally pushing all of that air out with the diaphragm. this is all to be done WITH CARE - ie dont lose it! you may have the feeling to push it all out very fast, try to resist and control the exhale. again, use discretion here.
now on a daily basis you dont have to walk around huffing and puffing like a fool. just Consciously Breathe, remember to breathe first into the belly \~> Lungs \~> Shoulders & Reverse.......you will notice a huge change in your mind once this become a habit. i can promise you.

Hey man, if I wasn't an eastern european 19 year old, I'd probably give you gold! Thanks a lot for the advice!

It's weird, everyone usually says to inhale with your nose and exhale with your mouth, but I guess I'll just use my nose only then from now on.

Are there perhaps some exercises you recommend for me to use to become better? should practicing 4 times a day for 5 minutes this and thinking about it while walking around work?

Again, thanks a lot for the detailed response!

Cheers
