Quick short post about why you should adopt them.
Intro
Cold showers have an incredible list of benefits. It is a hell to adopt the routine but brings amazing rewards.
Body
I started taking cold showers 8 months ago. The break in process was quite the challenge. Every cell in your body tells you to back away and turn the hot water on. Just the sheer willpower to get in, and stay in brings forth the greatest challenge and reward.
A freezing cold shower will pull you from the deepest of sleep and into action. Your skin will retain it's moisture and your hair will look shinier. There is an incentive to get out as quickly as possible which destroys the issue of losing track of time and being late in a hot shower.
Your gas bill will be lower and your bathroom won't fog up meaning less chance of mold. Cold showers separate the man from the child. After 6 months I began to meditate for 1 minute every shower. Ignoring the cold shooting down your back and relaxing works wonders in strengthening your frame.
I often take a cold shower before a date. It puts you in an elevated state of confidence. They've also worked wonders for my immune system. I don't remember the last time I was sick.
Your challenge: Next time you shower, before getting in turn the water to the coldest setting. Wash up and get out. It's harder than you think.

Perks of living in a thirld world country, you don't get to choose!
eftresq 8y ago
Obviously you've never spent a summer in Delhi. The water tanks are on the roofs of homes. The water becomes ambient to the air temperature. I couldn't take a luke warm shower for more than 10 seconds. This was how long it took for the water in walls to finish draining.
glawkneintehn 8y ago
This is how they do it where I am from It's like a solar panel but with a black background and pipes running back and forth through the panel. The tank stores the hot water.

UAE is first world country. They were aligned with the Allies (duh). Now Switzerland, that is a third world country.
feminists_are_dumb 8y ago
It's basically the only important part of the country it's in, and it's INCREDIBLY third world. The facade they put up to attract business and foreign investment is just a thin patina of bullshit.
Anost 8y ago
Since when is Abu Dhabi not important? It's the friggin capital, is a lot richer than Dubai and has majority of the oil business of the UAE. Al ain for example is not l exactly a massive city but still nowhere near 3Rd world. By what definition do you think it's 3rd world? Because it certainly can't be poverty as the local people are extremely wealthy, the medical services are top notch, their education system isn't the best but is fine. Which definition are you using?
feminists_are_dumb 8y ago
Because despite being one country on paper, the UAE does not function like most other countries. It functions like a loose coalition of city states, which is exactly what it is.
Developed vs developing. UAE has incredible inequality, meaning their average human development statistics may be high, but huge portions of the population experience debilitating poverty and third-world conditions. The vast majority of wealth is held by the ruling families and by ex-pats that move there. The median UAE resident is pretty poor. And I use those terms very specifically, since less than 20% of UAE residents are actually citizens, who are generally well off (and are the only ones who are counted in official UAE government reporting). If you look at the Human Development Index, UAE is in the top quartile, but if you compare that rank to the Inequality-adjusted HDI, they fall to the bottom half of the world.

Cold showers drastically increase sperm count, help with recovery after lifting and increase discipline.
[deleted] 8y ago
Why would you want a higher sperm count?
Mckallidon 8y ago
I'm hard like half the day with two cold showers a day.

Yep. They also help with approach anxiety, baldness and world hunger.

Pubmed would be a good source to reference. I think studies from quack sites with bad scientific methods need to stop being quoted here just because it accords with the mantra here. As a medical student I can't think of any good physiological reasons a cold shower would improve the immune system. Also the pubmed searches came up pretty empty.......
sailorJery 8y ago
Rhonda Patrick talks about it. She claims that her study of centenarians has shown higher than average genetic markers for stress response. So that means their bodies respond more aggressively to stressers be it old age, trauma, or extreme temperatures. Since stressers like extreme temperatures aren't something we can run a placebo case for ( you know damn well if you're sweating or freezing, let alone aging or experiencing trauma), I don't know how they would study the results objectively.
[deleted] 8y ago
I agree, there is so much today thats just horseshit, I have seen TED talks that pretend to have made breakthrough discoveries then you find out its mostly in the workings and still in testing phase and backed up by little evidence.
The only scientific findings on cold showers that I have hear is that they increase circulation and they are better for your skin that hot showers. There is no magic.
Wilreadit 8y ago
No. The moment cold water hits, the capillary beds constrict, restricting peripheral circulation.
It is warm water that actually bolsters circulation.

[deleted] 8y ago
You realize you just quoted a pnas article that has nothing to do with cold showers? It just gives evidence to a theory of why cold showers MIGHT work. This is exactly what I am talking about, PNAS is a great journal, but that article doesn't prove anything.
JimJalinsky 8y ago
If you re-read my original comment, I didn't refer to showers, only cold. A cold shower is one way however. Although I don't think any single study is conclusive on anything, that study does seem to say that cold therapy, meditation, and breathing resulted in reduced flu symptoms after people were subjected to the virus. Regardless of how valid you think that study was, it was relevant to my original comment, and it wasn't from some crackpot website.

I like to shave in the shower and I'll do that with warmer water because your skin seems easier to shave when warm.
But I really do like cold showers... right before bed is great.
What it does is it lowers your body temperature slightly (mostly at skin level) and that forces your body to react.
For a little while you feel kind of numb... and very, very relaxed.
That's the best part... the relaxed feeling afterwards.
When the icy cold water flows over your head and back you must not tighten up and try to fight it. Instead you just get into the coldness.
Don't get to the point where you are nearing hypothermia or anything, just get really cold.
Back when I grew up in California at my parents house we had a swimming pool and hot tub. The pool was usually rather cold (65 degrees) and the hot tub ran maybe 105 degrees. I used to have hot tub parties with a bunch of people and we would drink gin and tonics in the hot tub then when we started getting drunk and overheated we would jump into the pool to cool off.
Great times.
SorbateHead 8y ago
I did something like that at a ski lodge and I almost drowned. Me and friends went to the pool after a long day skiing to relax. There was a big hot tub and the water seemed extra hot. I went into the hot tub first and stayed in for quite a while. I got out, walked over to the side of the pool to dive in and swim to the other side.
When I dove in my entire body went into an intense pins and needles and I my muscles got incredibly weak. I rolled over to float on my back and weakly paddled my way to the ladder on the other side. I regularly lift weights...I couldn't even get the strength to pull myself up the ladder and my body was still pins and needles. I heard someone say, "You shouldn't have done that man." To this day I'm not sure what the fuck happened, but ill never sit in a hot tub and then jump in a cold pool again.
NeoreactionSafe 8y ago
Sounds like the water was near freezing.
Well... you ever heard of the Polar Bear Plunge ?

Kharn0 8y ago
I too suave in the shower.
So to clarify, shave in shower as normal, then cold water for, what 5mins?
NeoreactionSafe 8y ago
Oh I'd say about a minute or two depending on how cold the water is.
In summer when it's just too hot all the time I'll jump in and run cold water just long enough to drop my core temperature down a few degrees.
When you start getting a headache from the cold that's going too far.
Icanus 8y ago

Icanus 8y ago
Where I'm from hipsters are nearly women and unable to grow a beard.
I'm an outdoors kind of man and I fucking hate shaving :)
NeoreactionSafe 8y ago
Some people have really thick facial hair growth too.
For me I can go a couple days without shaving and not look too bad.
Typically I'll shave if I have something to do... some public event or something.
If I'm just riding my bike I wouldn't shave for that.
Drogba006 8y ago
I'd say it's because of fucking slobs who let their red curly pubic beards grow out and don't trim them, it looks like ass and combined with a high probability of a pussy ass vegan gluten free diet, you got a hipster beard.

Cold showers help flush toxins and wastes from deeper tissues, move oxygen and nutrients into deeper tissue, subdue inflammation and they build testosterone. If you do deep breathing training in a cold bath you burn a shit ton of fat and breath control strength that is unreal for survival and fighting. Since I've started taking cold showers twice a day everyday 2 years ago, I swear I have a hardon like half the day. I want to get an ice machine so after I work out I can take an ice bath. Also, hot water is also good for flushing toxins. Alternating hot and cold baths is the best in this regard. They both have their benefits. Heat soothes and relaxes muscles while cold dulls pain.
Wilreadit 8y ago
What toxins are you claiming water of all temperatures can flush out?
Mckallidon 8y ago
Dude. Most of them that wind up in deeper tissue, mainly visceral body fat, but possibly the organs as well. Cold water water and a cold body temp causes your blood to go deeper into the body to protect your organs. This displaces fluid that moves around much less than normal. Hot water increases blood flow to extremities. Hot water actually assists the largest organ in the body for eliminating waste, the skin. This displacement is no different than thermogenic effects from spices like turneric or exercise which increase body temp and circulation.its no different than why we use heat or ice for injuries. And I was clear. It is the alternation of extreme temps relative to body temp. Not water of all temps you illiterate shitlord.
Wilreadit 8y ago
Fuck off you mother fucker for name calling first of all.
What you said now is the truth. Your earlier statements were confounding. You had said cold water also increases peripheral circulation and hot water also does the same. That is retard science. Cold water or anything cold decreases peripheral circulation.
And you went on about toxins. What are these toxins? And how is excretion by skin, any better than excretion by kidneys or intestines.
I am calling you a fucking son of a ho, unworthy of your father's lineage, once more to assert my dominance in this name calling you initiated.
Rakosnik 8y ago
its been known for more than 1000 years that cold showers, saunas (cold and hot) are highly beneficial to your body, immune system, lymphatic system and so on. its been practiced for generations.
however a pussy like you with a dick so small you cant even see it and not just because of your fat tire you carry around cannot know shit like that.
so enjoy your ignorance fucktard and dont you dare trying cold showers you fkn pussy
Wilreadit 8y ago
Fuck you mother fucker.
Show me a single scientific source verifying the claims that you tout. There are many things that have been practised for generations. But to claim that these have some magical property is just too much.
But you being a son of a ho, nothing more is to be expected. And hence I remain.
Mckallidon 8y ago
There was no retard science. It was only confounding because you obviously did a drive by read and misinterpreted assuming I was doing a thorough explanation. The more detailed explanation was outside of the scope of the original comment which is why I simply said that the alternation is how they both contribute to the same outcome. I never said they did the same thing towards that end. That was clear as day in my first comment you illiterate cuck. Then, I never said the skin was better than the kidneys or colon. I was saying it's better to get the skin in on this more than it usually is for avg schmuck. Obviously that is a good thing. More elimination. Toxins? The body stores toxins in body fat when elimination cannot keep up. Everything from what's in water, the air, food preservatives, chemicals from cosmetics, the plastics from our food containers and gas station receipts, all the tiny amounts of shit in coffee, beer, cig smoke, produce, that the body eliminates. Which is a common occurrence these days with all the overeating and overexposure to toxins in the environment that overburden the body. The colon often cannot keep up anymore because a lot of people have a few lbs of impacted shit up there holding in wastes that the body is back logged on eliminating. So then people actually gain fat just to keep these things away from the organs and tissues. That's why when people detox they fast for days. They start burning the fat, releasing the toxins for processing and by not digesting the body can work more efficiently at elimination. Digesting food and absorbing nutrients is a huge burden on the body that is also bogged down by stress and processing too many macronutrients without enough micronutrients to fuel these processes. Straw man city up in this muthafucka. Go lift and approach. Fuck off with your surge of estrogen. And my mom is a ho. So what? I didn't fuck her.
Wilreadit 8y ago
Well sorry for assuming that.
Tin foil time, you son of a ho?
That is not the way the colon works, you miserable son of a ho. You are a shit head, you should have known better. There is not a shred of evidence to suggest that cold water bath, or hot water bath or any bath can rid toxins. It can make you sweat. But that is just water soluble ions. The bigger molecules would not even make it through. We would not even need dialysis. But you are too dumb to think of all these things you miserable, son of a ho-banger.
Well she is worn out and its time to dump her. You would have known if you had only fucked her.
Mckallidon 8y ago
You're too stupid to have an intelligent conversation with. I don't bother rehashing explanations someone didn't take the time to read properly the first time. Go back to community college where they have learning centers for your breed. I almost think you're trolling but that's above a pissant such as yourself. Go bang my mom or something.
Wilreadit 8y ago
Do you have any idea about my educational pedigree you miserable, unscientific, black, son of a ho.
Show my a single piece of evidence, trial type, that says sweating is a good way of losing toxins and I promise I won't fuck your ho momma again.
Mckallidon 8y ago
I'm sure your publications are so scholarly and the funds they provide allot you so much Reddit time. I'm only black from the waist down so let's be PC here. Once again, I encourage you to fuck my mom. I've always wanted a little brother.
Wilreadit 8y ago
The bitch is worn out. Not much juice in her cunt. Filthy piece of meat.
Now again, on topic, I think you didn't find much evidence to substantiate your toxin theory, did you? Just sweat it out I say, will help clean you.

I don't understand how people think taking a cold water is difficult. The excuses here are ridiculous. No way to go through motions? Relating this shit to saunas?

Hot water is good at killing germs.
Mckallidon 8y ago
Hot water doesn't kill germs unless it's at or above boiling point. Warm water increases the production of soap suds, which washes away germs. Soap molecules are polar and have a hydrophilic and hydrophobic part. One part clings to other molecules while the other clings to water which is physically removing the soap from the body.
Mckallidon 8y ago
This is also why all canned or bag sealed food has to be brought up to a boil and packaged at above 165. Meat temps are based on specific microorganisms. It doesn't kill everything. Just the targeted microbes.
Mckallidon 8y ago
A Downvote, seriously. Fucking idiots. My point was that one can still get clean with cold water. Morons.
Sementeries 8y ago
Agreed.
Hot or cold water when it comes to washing your hands with soap doesn't make a difference.
[deleted] 8y ago
[deleted]
Mckallidon 8y ago
Hot water, how specific. So is that why medical instruments are sterilized with steam, water at or above boiling point but food in a certain temperature range, which is relatively hot compared to our body temp will actually kill you because bacteria and amoebas thrive in it? Stick your hand in 140 degree water and it'll hurt. And it's also growing your doom if you drink it if it's say in this range for An extended time. This is also why drinking water has chemicals in it. What I said was that hot water below boiling doesn't kill them, which it doesn't asshat, it washes them away, with soap. Soap and water do not kill germs. It washes them away. Any two year RN will tell you that when you go the ER or Drs office with an infection and they say use soap and water when you say you washed it with peroxide. If you fuck like you read no wonder you're on here. If you read like you fuck it won't help you anyways. This is also why all canned foods are brought to a boil and then sealed at around 185 degrees. Otherwise they'd kill you. That's hotter than the hot we wash our hands and bodies with genius. If what we showered with killed germs it would not be good for us. Our skin actually depends on certain microorganisms to fight off others that would kill us if they if they got into us. Hand washing reduces risks, not eliminates, because it doesn't kill and washes away.
[deleted] 8y ago
[deleted]
Mckallidon 8y ago
That's funny because that's what I was getting at there when I described how soap actually works and that microorganisms, and not just bacteria by the way asshat are washed away, not killed by warm water. I was being very general for a general audience. That the bacteria are more effectively washed away with warmer water from the better lathering, but still are with cold nonetheless. Especially with today's foaming soaps that are already the correct ratio of room temp water and soap to perform the dissolving of oils from the hands and can be effectively cold rinsed away. Nice drive by read and rewording though. Next time I'll assume I'm lecturing a thread full of people who all give massive shits and want every detail so people like you have less opportunity to feel special on the Internet. I'm well aware. I work in an FDA regulated, and USDA certified and inspected production kitchen, and have credentials in food safety and contact surface sanitation that covered this very clearly. Cheers douche.

Not getting enough sleep has been a weekly occurrence in my life and I will tell you straight up that if I happen to only get four hours of sleep in one night, a cold shower works wonders in keeping me awake.
thor_away92 8y ago
Just to add, set that fucker to glacier cold and try to meditate in it for added benefit! (It's fucking hard to focus when your balls are ice but it's possible.)

Thanks for this link.
What is you opinion of this? Is it bullshit or?
Azzmo 8y ago
Some of it is bullshit, some of it is real. It's ultimately worth doing cold showers since, at the absolute minimum, you're doing at least one badass thing every day, it's easier on your skin, and you waste less time in the shower (if that's a concern).
And if it also increases testosterone, improves your immune system, helps you regulate your temperature, and cures depression then that's neat too.
mattizie 8y ago
I may look into it. Haven't had much success with meditation, maybe wim hof breathing method can help.
JackGetsIt 8y ago
Have you used any of the techniques? Has he produced any good literature on his method?
Officer_Dick_Johnson 8y ago
He has a book and a boot camp. Google, you should find it easily.
Though, Dutch only I think.
adam_varg 8y ago
Nope. Its bullshit.
Actually it is combination of cold exposure training and tumo meditation.
I have to admit he get himself to "non human" level, but hit method isnt something special and wont have effects his promises.
His talks how scientist are working on him and there will be studies soon, since 2006 again and again ... no results yet
Half of his features is over inflaunted. He didnt climb everest, he walked in shorts around advanced base camp (around 7000m altitude) in sunny weather, nice feats, but normal people walk there in t shirt in such conditions.., there is brothel and cineman in adb there ffs. His climb on "mountain" snezka with normal guy is ridiculous. I live 150km from there. Its hill, from where he started its about 600m elevation on half paved walk. I was there first when i was like 5 years old. There is fastfood stand near top of this "mountain" and whole families "climb" there with baby strollers. Weather he walked in was like around 0C. I could do this hike in shorts too without any training. Killimanajro is same, easy trekking peak little harder due to altitude, there are even mandatory porters and guides for ffs.
Most of his feature are like this if you look into them.
JackGetsIt 8y ago
Thanks for the actual info. The documentary features his son briefly and it looks like the son is monetizing his dad with exaggeration and building up the charisma cult thing (which is helped when the breathing techniques produce euphoria as a result of hypo/hyper oxygenation). In addition to the cold exposure and tumo it also seems like he does the exposure so frequently that he's increased his brown fat stores which helps to generate body heat. So there's nothing really special here.
Maybe if more people get into these practices we do get some shift in the western medical paradigm that immune systems can be strengthened and regulated with meditation and cold exposure but I think we've been heading that way for a while now right? Doctors are just afraid to actually prescribe any of these practices because people will mess them up on there own and sue. It also seems like big pharma won't really profit if any of these techniques are effective. So there's not much push to develop a big body of literature on cold exposure/meditation.
adam_varg 8y ago
Yep. He is actually some kind of marketing hotshot.
Oh i forgot that breahting exercises. Its holotrophic (?) breathing. Girlfriend showed me that when i was 14, we used it to get this short mildish trips for fun.
I do some basic cold exposure training for loong time. That deep breathing and mindfulness comes naturally, you either fail or you will do it anyway. And its part of basic wilderness self rescue training for extreme cold enviroment where there is lot of unfrozen water (finland, alaska, arctic, etc).
To be fair, he can do features no human done yet, atleast not recorded. Even world top cold water swimmers can spend there so much time as he do. Especially those multiple hours in ice cubes. Propably some genetical advantage combined with decades of daily training. Definetely not his "method" since most cold exposure guys do same stuff and none of his students repeated. Even that guy who was his apprentice for decade+ cant.
Exactly. Mindfulness is already heavily researched and makes a lot of changes in human body. Cold exposure the same.
Lot of extreme alpinist are/were actually using meditation and cold exposure training (that one comes naturally with climbing though). For reference Steve House and Mark Twight.
Doubt that doctors will ever prescribe it. It needs too much discipline for too long time periods to get major benefits that average people wont be able to endure.
My experience with cold exposure is that it doesn help that much witch accute troubles, but help immensely with recovery and aftermath. I mean i get cold somewhat slower and have larger comfortable temperature range. But i recover in fraction of time and i am not able to get common cold from being cold, even for days.
Icanus 8y ago
I tried this and everything went black in front of my eyes.
How cold is too cold? I think the water here is somewhere between 5 and 8°C
adam_varg 8y ago
Its too cold when it feel like being hit by baseball bat and that dull pain doesnt go away fastish.
[deleted] 8y ago
I've been doing this for over a year, and it's done wonders for my confidence.
Scroph 8y ago
Are you sure about this ? I've been taking cold showers for three years and every single time I do, the mirror will get foggy because of the heat that my body releases.
scrapir 8y ago
I don't post much but had to comment on this one. Joe Rogan did a podcast with Dr. Rhonda Patrick (she knows her shit) about this. Youtube link https://youtu.be/FApCVOXoweU You can also find it on audio only on the play store (search Joe Rogan podcast). #672 *edited to include show #

So as a Canadian that lives most of his time above the 52nd parallel, no. Late spring, summer and early autumn, I' take luke warm to cold showers. Even take an evening dip in the pool if it's over 65F to save the shower.
But with daytime temps reaching -40f without windchill in winter, you can keep your cold showers to yourself. I'm sticking to heated water.

Don't let your rationality interrupt our circle jerk please.
Officer_Dick_Johnson 8y ago
I don't get it. There's no difference between the cold shower and lets say doing 25 pushups first thing out of bed: same adrenaline realise, same blood flow activation, same immune system benefits, same discipline.
It's just sounds like circle jerk. Why not recognize the active mechanism behind the cold that has all this benefits (a lose term here) instead of pushing blindly one thing.
P.s. Tim Hof stuff works because of adrenaline realise, not because of cold. Cold is just a catalyst.

JackGetsIt 8y ago
Except that cold exposure and keto both have solid science behind them.
Officer_Dick_Johnson 8y ago
You don't get it brahhh... Chicks can smell my alpha pheromones when I take cold showers.
idontseeanything 8y ago
Why this has a science flair lol?
Wilreadit 8y ago
Because it ain't science. And without the flair, there is nothing to tell that this is science.
chances_are_ur_a_fag 8y ago
the russians have been swimming in ice cold water for centuries. those that practice it pretty much never get sick and have impeccable health.
Officer_Dick_Johnson 8y ago
This is all anecdotal at best.
Wilreadit 8y ago
Exactly. They drink vodka, wear Adidas and shoot up their neighbors. All these could be responsible for their health too.
JackGetsIt 8y ago
Isn't an actual study on a particular group of people the opposite of anecdotal? If he said "Yea my dads cousin swims in ice cold water everyday and he never get's sick!" That would be anecdotal.
Officer_Dick_Johnson 8y ago
In that citation it said "they claimed ...", as in people doing cold water swimming said what benefits they experienced from it.
Now that's not very scientific, is it?
Just because a guy in a white lab coat ask you a question, your answer does not become science, especially in One Interest communities (there's a lot of bias).
Until there's sensors and monitors and blood test and shit is involved it's anecdotal.
JackGetsIt 8y ago
It's a study. It uses scientific method. The measurement was a 'mood states rating scale.' Now that's not a very accurate or rigorous testing method, but on the spectrum it's far from 'anecdotal' and it's not the only study on cold exposure.
If you threw out every study that used questionnaires and human reflection you'd be throwing out a lot of research. If this were the only study ever done on cold therapy I'd be highly skeptical as well but there are a lot of other more rigorous studies that when combined gives a strong indication that cold therapy is beneficial.
Officer_Dick_Johnson 8y ago
Fair point, but…
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=42QuXLucH3Q
Have you seen this?
JackGetsIt 8y ago
I actually have. I love his channel and I'm down with your skepticism. It's always safer to error on the side of "give me more better data because I call bullshit." I've just been reading up on cold therapy for a while now. Tim Ferris also discusses it in The Four Hour Body; and I think there's enough evidence that we need to spend even more money and time in developing it as a legitimate treatment.
Officer_Dick_Johnson 8y ago
I wonder how much benefit is from cold alone vs the adrenaline.
Like Tim Hof, for example, his stuff seems to be working because of his ability to consciously (with his exercises/routine) realise adrenaline in his system.
JackGetsIt 8y ago
That's a great question and my spin on it is how does cold and adrenaline affect mental fortitude and then that renewed mental clarity actually helps with reduced illness through better exercise and lifestyle habits?? Almost like a very strong placebo affect. Regardless, it's a really difficult area to study because there are so many variables to control.
Officer_Dick_Johnson 8y ago
As I already made a comment before, but for me it seems, that at least when we are talking about the benefits that original OP lists ( minus the saving hot water/money) you could achieve all that with, lets say 25-50 pushups first time in the morning (or any other activity that realises adrenaline and pumps blood through your veins).
If you do something physical you get all the Immune System, Better Energy, Mental Fortitude, ect… benefits.
And if you do something every single day you get the Discipline benefit.
TB3o3 8y ago
Genuine question though; at what point does it become too cold? In cold weather, making you bathroom cold, couldn't cold showers put you at risk of hyperthermia? Or at the very least make you at risk to the common cold?

Playing football and wrestling forced me to take cold showers/ice baths. I never enjoyed them but they sure as hell worked wonders for healing my body. If yall work out, which you should be, then cold showers WILL help you in the long run. Other benefits may be achieved by some people but for me it has been primarily for joint health.
PillDragon 8y ago
I don't have the time to set up ice baths but when I used to go to a gym where I'd shower immediately after my workout I'd alternate hot and cold water. 30 seconds each. It's really good for the muscles.
lilbro1984 8y ago
I believe it's called contrast therapy.
Drogba006 8y ago
I used to do what is coined as a "navy shower".
Get in, rinse with cold ass water, then turn it off, lather up and rinse off again. You're done in less than 7-8 minutes.
I did this for months then realized "fuck it, I like warm water"
Air4ce1 8y ago
So I'm in a "developing" country and haven't really noticed an extreme affect from cold showers. The only thing I noticed really is that it wakes me up. Since I'm here learning a new language it's very useful for that. Other than being alert...I don't really notice much more.
[deleted] 8y ago
The most incredible thing about cold showers is that moment when you realize you can just choose not to feel negatively about the cold. It happened for me about 2 weeks in.
It was like, holy shit -- I'm feeling cold but I can just view it in a detached sense and be like "Yeah that's cold."
I think the presence of mind this creates applies to so many other minor discomforts we face in life.
zenAFinLA 8y ago
Started this about 2 months ago. Love it. My technique:
-Start warm/hot, do face and hair. -Soap body while turning off the hot water completely, now you need to get it off with the cold water -Get pumped. Have fun with it, I have this mantra, "I decide... I decide... I decide... I DECIDE YES MUUFUCKA!" (Jump in at that point) -It translates to life. When you are unsure or hesitant like when you want to approach, say the mantra and go, you're now trained to do what you think of as unpleasant.
Rugnardl 8y ago
Alarm rings and is silenced as my feet hit the floor. No snooze. Chug a cup of water and stretch. Enter shower, no stream yet. Turn knob for shower head and then cold water, while under it. All actions performed in sequence, as habit, to cripple hesitation. If I know it's going to happen anyway--myself entering the cold shower--then why hesitate? Some things will not change, and must be accepted.
[deleted]
empatheticapathetic 8y ago
Yeah I prefer to just go straight in without thinking about it.

Bathing was meant to be done in cold water. Just think about it - were there hot water heaters thousands of years ago?
It's not like people bathed in hot springs whenever they decided to submerge themselves back in the day.
aanarchist 8y ago
maybe hot water is also a conspiracy by the illuminati.
segagaga 8y ago
Its not really relevant to your point, but you might be interested to know Carthage had hot water piping before the Roman Invasion and destruction of the city, placing the earliest examples of this technology at circa 300BC, literally thousands of years ago.
And bathing in hot springs has been done for even longer. The proto-germanic root of the word bath literally means "to warm".

Sweden, and they turned out alright... Until recently at least.
I guess they do have the polar bear swim or whatever it's called.
PUSSIES_WILLBE_RAPED 8y ago
People used to smell like shit and would use water and plants to wipe away their grossest parts, sometimes. Before sewer systems (think between fall of Rome and industrial rev.) you had shit flowing in the streets. Besides that you could heat up water with fire.

We are meant to shit in holes in the ground, i mean there were no toilets a thousand years ago.
Mckallidon 8y ago
It's actually bad for us the way we're positioned to shit on toilets. Shitting while squatting on the ground is so much better for the colon.
