I am Spanish, and thanks to a great decision from my parents they sent me for my senior year to PA for a year to finish high school. First of all I must say that my knowledge of the language was far from good, but 3 months in, after I started thinking in english all went super smooth. I don't think what you've posted here only applies to women, as others have pointed out. As an American male, I don't really like being friends with most of the people I've met either.
