I have lifted (and boxed) religiously for the last 2-3 years and have built a solid rig. A lot of monk mode. Over a year. 187cm, 90kg and about 9-10% BF, 27 years old. About a month ago, I noticed an electric shock down my arm on overhead presses, and turns out I have ulnar nerve entrapment or something similar (waiting on ultrasounds, MRI cleared me). I could be looking at up to 18 months off lifting, who knows.

I haven't lifted in a month and I already see my muscles deflating. I suffer from pretty bad depression, this has spiralled me down so much worse. I really put all my eggs in one basket here, in terms of a source of happiness / confidence.

I have so much free time after work. I read and meditate and all the good stuff, but because of my deep depression I've yet to game girls. I just came off a really bad 8 month stint with a oneitis who I ghosted permanently last week without leaving a word (you know the deal, had me around her finger, always ghosted me, made excuses, kept me on the shelf, etc) and I'm proud of that, but I lack that serious drive to go out and game right now since I'm an emotional wreck from my recent injury news + finally ghosting my oneitis who I literally thought was the one. I spend all day thinking about what's next, what my purpose is, where do I find enjoyment in life?

My question is, has anyone been in this scenario? I can train legs, abs and run. But I can see my arms and chest deflating and it's killing me. Where should I look for confidence, for enjoyment in life? Boxing and lifting were literally all I had.

Be mindful of how hard you push your body. I would train up to 7 days a week, often twice, and I feel this resulted in my injuries.
Edit: just to clarify.. This is more in terms of finding what to do with my time / where to draw confidence from since lifting is such a big thing here. I’m doing all the right things in relation to the injury. Doing all the scans as we speak..

Talk to a physical therapist. It’s literally their job to

I’m doing the scans now to find out the source of the issue, physical therapy will follow. Right now I’m pretty much on the sidelines..

Yo brother , i also have ulnar nerve issues on my left arm.Whenever i bend my elbow at bench presses or OHP my nerve crosses over the elbow bone and irritates it. I never had issues with that the first year. Is that your issue ? Is it some kind of injury ? Havent went to a doctor yet to MRI myself but will soon enough.I will love to hear what it is and what doctors tell you.

For now , i asked my family and told me to go buy some elbow straps this week and i cut OHP completely and replaced it with lateral raises , front raises etc so i dont bend it. When i benched 70kg last week it got super irritated so i am thinking of cutting bench as well and doing some cable flyes, tricep and forearm work.

Let me know how it goes for you.

Whenever I do an overhead press movement with my left arm, I get an electric-like jolt down my arm and my little finger and ring finger go numb. No pain though. I went and saw a sports doctor who said it was definitely the ulnar nerve and to avoid upper body lifting until we resolve it. I had an MRI done so the nerve isn't flicking against anything in my spine thank God, but now I've gotta get an ultrasound in my elbow to see if the issue is there. The options are then either 1) physiotherapy, 2) steroidal injections or 3) surgery. If you're irritating the nerve, stop now, nerve damage is serious and you don't want permanent damage on it. Go see a sports doctor ASAP.

Thats me post workout but its mild fortunately.
The elbow ultrasound is really the best thing to do.

Well yeah i guess it is what it is. I remember myself falling in depression for 3 days when i found about it first on google.I guess we gotta work with what we have now.

If you happen to resolve this i am curious to know how.
Metalgear222 5y ago
Just for future reference and protecting those reading, this is caused by a few reasons;
When you’re doing BB overhead press your wrist should be centered directly above the elbow before picking up the bar (most peoples grip are too wide or too narrow)
Your elbow should stay “tucked in” in front of your torso and on the outside of your chest, rather than out to the side (even though you’ll have more power flaring your elbows out to the side)
TehJimmyy 5y ago
Just for future reference none of these points are valid. I have followed these since i started lifting and still got this.

Chances are one or more was incorrect that or you were overtraining or nutrition was inadequate. The body doesn’t randomly get injured like that unless something was wrong for an extended period of time.

Have you tried isometric contractions? That's where you contract against a load and don't move the muscle. Therefore you're not moving the irritated area across the joint. It may be an option and can provide strength gains.
You might have to think outside of the box a bit, but there are still ways you can keep strength and develop muscle without doing traditional compound lifting.

Echo'ing others - go to a sports injury/physical therapist. I have several old injuries that I work out with. Have been to doc, PT, and done sessions with a trainer. Got the 3 of them involved to get figure out how to work out effectively without aggravating anything or making it worse. There might be limitations on some lifts and exercises, but figure it out and then get back in the gym.

Swim or read.

The same thing happened to me. I went too hard on my gymnastic rings while doing ring dips and fucked up my nerve. I couldn't even squeeze a bottle of shampoo for a whole weak.
I used a healing research peptide known as BPC-157 to speed up my healing. Cut my recovery time from 9 months to 3 months.
It did, going forward always have a rest day. 4 to 5 days a week of enough. The rest is as important as the work you put in. The time in the gym breaks down the muscle, it's your rest times where the muscle is actually built by the body.
TRPanon1389 5y ago
Do you still get ulnar nerve issues? I want to resolve this for good moving forward. I went too crazy in the gym mixing power lifting programs and then aesthetics shit on off days.
jay_jay_man 5y ago
Resolved for good. Can do ring dips no problem. It also fixed my ankle tendons and shoulder impingement too.
2 x 150mcg daily for 3 months. Started healing within the first week. You do have to rest though, I skipped the gym entirely for those few months.
TRPanon1389 5y ago
I’ve used GHRP and CJC before, but found it didn’t really do much except for making my skin nicer. My friend uses BPC for bruscitis, I didn’t know it healed nerves? Could you PM me source? Thanks

Just go to a physical therapist ffs... Why would you ask random strangers

I gave myself pretty bad golfer's elbow in both arms from gymming too much, as well as an ab strain which flairs up everytime I squat.
School is stressful af as I didn't take my first degree seriously so I'm going back for more schooling while most of my friends are graduating. My test levels are at an all time low, judging from my interest level in girls. Due to these factors, my anxiety is at an all-time high as well. In other words, life sucks atm.
Fuck it though, we gotta be men, grit our teeth and push through. There's no easy way out, are you gonna be the bitch or make life your bitch?
TRPanon1389 5y ago
Thanks man. This is the shit I need to hear
falconiawillfall 5y ago
No worries, good luck
HurricaneHugues 5y ago
So you can't do:
Squats
Leg Extensions
Leg Curls
Hyperextensions
Leg Press
??
Got it
TRPanon1389 5y ago
I can do this stuff. But god damn, it’s so limited. I can feel my shirts becoming roomier by the day
HurricaneHugues 5y ago
It's easier to regain what u already had, than it is to make up for what you never trained for.
