I am 18 and I just found TRP, on the verge of going to my first year of college and I am interested to apply this to my life. The problem is physical. I have no major confidence issues and I have always been good at talking to people/women. I am funny and sociable and I have friends. But I don’t look the part. First of all I’m out of shape. I have been for a while and I don’t know where to start as a beginner. Is there an all purpose routine for a generally out of shape guy to start out doing? Second of all, I have very thick, very straight hair that is difficult to manage. Is there anywhere I could get recommendations for men’s hairstyles and how to style them? Thirdly, I went through a period of major depression in my life, and one of the results of that was that I neglected some health issues I have. One of them is unfortunately halitosis. Is there any cure? Lastly I have been accumulating more and more dress sense but if there is a forum on how to dress or outfits for men of my age I would be very appreciative. I know this is a lot to ask. I’m ready to dedicate myself 100% to becoming someone I want to be, I just don’t know where to begin or where to look. I hope this is the place.

You only have 3 things in life: your mind, your body and your reputation.
Reputation. Takes a lifetime to build, a second to throw away. It is EVERYTHING.
Network with everyone, especially your professors and lecturers. Do not burn bridges and don't go out of your way to humiliate people. But cut out toxic people, they usually turn into a cancer.
Don't smoke. Don't drink too much, stay away from drugs. Clean living is good living. Do some sports and have hobbies. Read random books, non-fiction.
Keep your mouth shut, people don't want to know, people don't care, people will only gossip. Don't fucking trust anyone.
Don't stick your dick in crazy.
Mistakes happen but you get a few (very, very, very few) second chances here and there, don't waste them, you won't get a third. Everything is usually worse and harder the second time.
Question everything, nothing is what it seems at first glance.

I relate to a lot of your post so commenting here to come back later.
Also, /r/MaleHairAdvice is not a bad subreddit at all and if you have good genes /r/MaleGrooming and /r/Beards are hype too for facial hair gains.

I'm 21 and all I can tell you is:
this is what I wish I knew 3 years ago
5-methoxy-NN-DMT 5y ago
I know this but it doesn’t make me any less of a loner or autistic during small talk :(
If anything it just makes me aware of how far I need to go
semislicktires 5y ago
The good thing is you are aware of the issue. I dislike small talk too, mostly because i find it very superficial / stupid. However, I am fine with small talk if i am in a good mood.
Social skills are something you are not born with, the more you socialize, the better you get at it. Like leveling up the "Speech" skill in Skyrim, i guess. Same goes for dating and women. The more experience you have with them, the better you will deal with them :) With that being said, I, and many others have a long way to go, so you are not alone. I need to improve my socialization with complete strangers, because I dislike initiating talk with strangers (I wish they'd initiate it instead, because that's my biggest issue - breaking the ice)

You have to make mistakes to grow up.
The only thing I would tell you is:
Don't waste a second of your life for something that will not give you long term benefit;
Lift, study, discover your mind and the world.
BUILD YOURSELF.

_the_shape_ 5y ago
It's typically difficult to balance delayed gratification for the sake of achieving your goals and habitual weed usage.
Some people can actually manage, but nearly every user will likely downplay and say that it's not a problem, they can handle smoking and knocking off all their goals uninhibited (i.e. rationalize). It also has a way of acting as a nice little safety net to retreat to. "As long as there's weed, everything's good, maaan". It can be difficult to see far along enough down the road how that can turn into a much bigger problem, especially at your age, and especially if a good deal of your social group also consists of smokers.
My advice? Try kicking the stuff for at least half a year, dedicate yourself to building yourself up without it, then re-evaluate once you hit that mark on the calendar: was I more productive while on it, or off it? What I've achieved up until now: will smoking compromise it or not? Am I willing to risk the momentum and what I've achieved up to this point by starting to smoke regularly again?

It isn't worth my dignity or self respect.
It's only worth about $80. I really wish I could've shown 18 year old me that truth.

How effective the ketogenic diet is.
xezhaw 5y ago
There is not enough scientific evidence wether is more effective in comparison with other diets. The only thing that is effective is high protein consumption and calorie intake overall.
EvolvedA 5y ago
Well, there is evidence that goes back to as far as the 1970ies, but this evidence is broadly neglected and dismissed by the scientific community, as it is often the case with results that don't fit into the current paradigm. I agree that there are more studies needed but I and the folks over at r/ketogains at least make it seem that this is not purely anecdotal.
What we should learn from the recent keto/low carb movement is at least, that fats are not as bad and carbs (or alleviated insulin levels) are not as unproblematic as we all thought.
Also, a good starter are the books The Obesity Code and The art and science of ketogenic performance if you want to explore the other side of what you think is true.
youcantdenythat 5y ago
Generally carbs are higher GI which cause someone who eats them to get hungry more quickly.
Low carb foods help keep away the hunger which ends up in fewer calories being consumed.
Doesn't work for everyone tho.
Beegoop 5y ago
He didn't compare it to anything, he just said it was effective.
EvolvedA 5y ago
Correct. I was trying different diets all my life (my BMI is in the normal range but BF% could be lower) and I did low fat/high protein for a long time which was quite effective but required a lot of effort and dedication. However, compared to this keto feels like a breeze (at least after the initial 3 weeks) and my BF went down 3% in one and a half months barely exercising while eating double cheeseburgers with extra bacon, extra cheese and no bun... or coffee with a piece of butter. Or some piece of meat almost every evening (with butter on top). Total epiphany for me.

For what?
xezhaw 5y ago
For building muscle if you are a lifter, for losing body fat if you are in a cut, for maintaining muscle if you are on a cut, etc. It also applies to people who does other types of exercises.
2comment 5y ago
None of this really pans out though. The US has been extremely high protein relative to the rest of the world for over a century now and has been consistently the fattest.
Greece has very high protein per capita consumption and is also the fattest popultion in continental europe, and Iceland is the highest in world and has a skyhigh obesity and overweight level among adults, over 50%.
Protein does very little for cutting specifically and for building muscle high levels will probably be counter productive.
For instance, this study was conducted comparing people taking 0.8 grams-protein/kg vs a high protein group of 4.4 gr-pr/kg. Similiarly, studies have shown no statistical difference in change in strength, fat-free mass, etc among low and high protein groups after 10 weeks, etc:
https://jissn.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/1550-2783-11-19
The argument for building muscle is almost akin to the sympathetic magic idea of eating tiger penis for virility. Almost. "I eat muscle, I gain muscle." Yes, some protein is necessary, but more than necessary isn't better (we had this same idea with supplemention of beta-carotene, iodine, etc and it always bit us in the ass):
So just think about actual protein needs (56gr/day for man RDA). Muscle is about 80% water, so a pound of body muscle needs only (1lb = 454 gram x 0.20% actual nonwater=) 90 grams of protein per pound to build.
So say, newbie gains in the first year (gains generally decrease after this) is 25lbs pure muscle which the upper end some muscle sites put it at. That's 25 lbs-muscle x 454gram-lb-conversion x 0.2 nonwater = 2,270 grams / year. Now 2,270 year / 365 days = a whopping 6.2 grams of extra protein a day to build that.
Even if you want to argue that we need extra or that body cells change, double or quadruple that number and it's still a measley 12 or 24 grams extra protein a day.
The reason that excess protein may be counterproductive is just acidosis. When we eat high (animal) protein (that typically contain more of the sulfur rich aminos acids), the body needs to fight the acidic nature of the food by taking calcium (seems to be from body muscle in studies) and dumping it into the bloodstream to neutralize the effect. It's thought to cause muscle wasting and fat deposition in the muscle cells.
It's also thought why older populations in these countries often lose so much more muscle.

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/11842945
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23364017
I haven't seen anything super convincing that protein helps lose fat, etc on a population scale.
xezhaw 5y ago
But, USA or Greece actually do exercise? What about calorie intake and calorie expenditure? They eat high protein, but if they don't do anything about it, it's useless. I assumed that everyone on this sub do actually lift or at least it's in their plans. Consume more protein than needed it's to make sure that you eat the sufficient grams of protein daily. Thanks for everything btw

Thanks for your insight. I’m going to have to do some thinking about the things you mentioned.

Halitosis can have several causes, but eating more fruits and veggies with fiber helps (fiber as a an isolated supplement likely won't). Several people I know who had strict dental regimens even cut back on tongue scraping once they went this route because the buikdup just stopped occuring. Maybe reduce sulphur containing foods.
As for general advice. Realize how many useless adults are out there, especially those involved in the system. Modern schooling has us trust these types when they're often the most worthless. Recognize people of value and how to cultivate their friendship. Avoid losers and their loser games.
