Starting this most recent spring I played old school runescape for long-ass hours a day. I've been on army training the past 60 days and have no intention of resuming when I get back. About a week before I left I shifted my gaming habits to playing with friends so I spend less time gaming and there's an almost social aspect to it. I like gaming and will continue to do so in moderation.
However- I love nerdy shit, and I loved all the numbers and statistics of runescape. I want to replace it with a less time consuming/wasting hobby.
Current list of hobbies-
Lifting
Light-medium gaming
About to get back into drinking with friends
Studying cyber security (want a network plus certificate by end of year. This is more for professional development than fun)
What are some cool nerdy hobbies?I am happy with my SMV so I don't care if it's a high SMV hobby; I just want something to do/look forward to/study/theory craft

I can tango. Love the music. Plus, no one's gonna look at the awkward guy having a seizure. AND her ass looks great.

Highly recommended. Amazing way to learn how to escalate without words. Also you learn about human relationships and what drives a girl crazy sexually (read: preselection, confidence, height, good looks, smoothness).

isn't that a bit...gay?

I've found myself buzzing for astronomy/sky watching.
Having an understanding of the night sky feels really special, being able to point out Mars, Jupiter, Venus, Polaris, Ursa Major, Ursa Minor, Cassiopeia etc. It also helps put the entire world (and universe) into context and help remind you how small and insignificant you actually are... beautiful, terrifying and sad, a good motivator on how you spend your time.
I love it when I get that notification on my phone that the ISS is coming over my town that night, especially when I'm least expecting it.
If you'd been following, the blood moon (lunar eclipse) occurred yesterday.
Things like meteor showevers also make good dates.

Photography. It's quite an expensive hobby but addicting and gratifying once you get into it.
jm51 5y ago
3D printing is nerdy and can be used to make small gifts.
'Oh honey, you made me a heart shaped box...'
TanSuperman 5y ago
Photography is easy to pick up but there's definitely a nerdy side to it especially if you get into stuff like color and light manipulation, plus it's kinda cool to be able to show off an artistic side and being able to ask attractive people to model for you
redway041826 5y ago
BJJ is a great sport for both cardio, meeting people, theory crafting, etc.
It will get you out of your comfort zoning while also getting you in tune with your competitive gaming side. Something to get you out of the shell while learning new things.

Look up warhammer 40k. Meditating while building , painting. Min max armies with different unit statistics. Gambling with dice rolls . I like it. It’s expensive AF. Look up recasters (Chinese copies). If you’re interested I can link you to that

Have you heard of board games? It's time for some blood rage my friend
Edit: Kinda relevant. Great way to meet nerdy chicks to friendzone or fuck!
[deleted] 5y ago
Find a local gym(If you can't driving 30 minutes to get their is still worth it) that offers jiu jitsu classes or mma and immedietly hop into that shit. Gives you a chance to meet cool people plus you learn alot about yourself and how to be a dangerous mother fucker who knows how to defend himself.
JinkiesGangAClue 5y ago
TRP is about improving yourself, to include socially, sexually, emotionally, financially and mentally.
If you enjoy playing games, and they do not obstruct any of the aforementioned above, then play away.
Your nerdy hobbies should be hobbies you enjoy and make you happy bud. If you feel your life is lacking in any way, combat that.
MetatronsRubiksCube 5y ago
I suppose that was the answer all along. I've been in pretty much a monk mode and have had an opportunity to analyze my life from a removed perspective. I think the issue was I was subconsciously treating my victories within runescape as victories IRL, and I started slacking IRL. I haven't worked out regularly in over a year, and hav just now (since I've been gone) gotten back into it. However, I'm freshly motivated for when I return home. Maybe instead of changing my hobbies I should just re structure them? Making a "priorities of work" list, so to speak. I'm pretty much just thinking on paper at this point; I've taken up journaling recently and am tying to get better at organizing my thoughts into words, if that makes sense

What country are you in
MetatronsRubiksCube 5y ago
US
CalvinRichland 5y ago
Best nerd hobby: shooting. Full of engineers and the like while not being gay dungeons and dragons. If you lived close id even take you to try it.
d3nominata 5y ago
Similar to shooting, airsoft is also pretty fun but can be a bit pricey especially at first.
GoldZone1 5y ago
I wish it was that easy in Europe.
MetatronsRubiksCube 5y ago
I love shooting, but I can't justify the cost right now. Might pick it up in a couple years

It has never been cheaper. Sell all that video game garbage and pick up a used gun.

I work in the casino industry and if numbers are your thing you'd enjoy being and advantage player. There's lots of books on it. It's not cheating it's just taking advantage of statistical and procedural errors and advantages to shift the odds of winning into your favor. It takes a lot of work to get good at but it's well worth the payout if you do manage to get good.
[deleted] 5y ago
Don't they kick those players out?
redisthetruth 5y ago
Lol this is bad advice. Casinos are the cesspool of human beings. Doesn’t lead to any purpose or fulfillment or friendships.
Source: I used to be a professional.

Fuck gambling mate, unless you wanna start losing money you work your ass off for then yeah be my guest
SomeSaltyShit 5y ago
You know little to nothing about gambling, do you?
[deleted] 5y ago
Speaking from a person who has had gambling issues in the past, of course i know what the fuck gambling is
SomeSaltyShit 5y ago
You're weak. You could be addicted to weight lifting/drinking water/something ridiculous and it would be a detriment.
I've made a living from gambling for close to 2 decades and know others who have/do as well.

An advatange player in a casino?

PM-ME-GROCERIES 5y ago
Not a lot of people can generally count cards that good. In the whole world I'd wager there's about one to two thousand total. Those are the guys killing the casinos and even then that's up there. Advantage play is hole carding, edge sorting, collision with other players and creating teams to play games among a few other strategies.
Dirty_Socks_Mullins 5y ago
Can count cards that *well**
SauliusTRP 5y ago
Advanced player with 100k debt i think
Edit: /s
nebula79283 5y ago
a 100k debt? ????
PM-ME-GROCERIES 5y ago
Depends. It takes money to make money. You need a bankroll. If you plan on sitting there for 12 hours a day getting 100 - 200$ max then you best not waste your time.
jm51 5y ago
Done right, it takes a little money and a lot of time to start making a living from gambling. To stand a chance of being long term successful, disciplined bankroll management is vital. If you're good enough to be a long term winner, you're also good enough to build a large bankroll from a small one.
ime, gambling is a good short to medium term hobby. There's lots of nerdy stuff to get into. Formulas, bankroll criteria etc.
Almost everything you need to learn for successful gambling, especially discipline, will prove to be very useful in the non gambling world.
rpsheepdog 5y ago
Could get into chess or cards? Obviously not advocating straight gambling, but I've known guys who are disciplined with their money and treat it like a sport, sounds like it could be mentally stimulating
MetatronsRubiksCube 5y ago
I actually love chess. I play a couple games a week because I like strategy games, but it's too binary for me to invest time into studying. In a parallel to cards, I used to play magic the gathering but I haven't had friends who played in a long-ass time
rpsheepdog 5y ago
the guy I am talking about would go to a local poker room and just play on the $1 and $2 tables. He would set aside a %of his winnings for the next trip and do whatever with the remainder of the money.
I suppose its not so much as a social hobby which might seem more like what you are interested in though.
[deleted] 5y ago
Ohhhh will you enjoy my other comment my friend
jm51 5y ago
Try joining a chess club that has league teams. My club had a doctor join, pretty good player too. Chess was his time out from the world. Two hours of trying to win a board game as his only priority.
He had no time to study so just played his best every match. The way league games work, the more you win, the higher up the board you play and the stiffer the competition. So whether you study or not, each match should test you.

I would think very, very carefully about picking up something that's too nerdy to do, simply because if you are to improve as a person, sometimes you need to be taken out of your comfort zone.
Have you considered learning a musical instrument? There's a substantial amount of theory to this (you can't just play any notes you like in any order and expect them to sound good - music theory teaches you what notes work when), there's an opportunity to be nerdy (you would not believe how many doodads are available to the guitar player in order to make a very specific noise come out of their instrument) and in order to get better, you really need to play with other people - which will force you to mix with and meet people who are perhaps a bit different.
It's challenging and rewarding in equal measure - once you start to get over the initial "dear god I'm crap" phase (which takes a couple of years) you can get to the point where you're playing in front of other people and that's a hell of a buzz.
availableEXCLAMATION 5y ago
Get into Jiu-Jitsu.. Shit is addicting as fuck. Makes you able to defend yourself. And gets you in great shape..
Plus, it’s the easiest Segway to escalate with a girl... “oh I do Jiu-Jitsu, it’s like wrestling...” *proceed to play wrestle with girl end in bed.

I'm an old school Runescape player aswell. The point is, there is nothing wrong with it. I used to play Runescape for hours and hours each day. The moment I found out TRP I quit playing games for 3 months. After those 3 months I started playing again but I was puting less time into it. I started replacing my gametime with reading, going out (I made lots of new friends), lifting (haven't lifted for 2 months now because of my injury), eating clean, ... I suggest you find something you're passioned about and try make it a hobby, hell maybe even try make it your job! I'm currently trying to figure out how I can make a fare amount of money besides my main income (IT guy @ a primary school). I'm looking into directions like starting my own brewery, making an app, starting my own e-commerce webshop, investing in crypto, ... I hope this helped you.
MetatronsRubiksCube 5y ago
Maybe a monk mode is needed before I start again
ElijahBurningWoods 5y ago
Start again with what?
MetatronsRubiksCube 5y ago
OSRS. Might just take some time to rebuild my good habits before throwing it back in the mix
ElijahBurningWoods 5y ago
Yeah sure, find a hobby/goal in your life and you're good to go.
[deleted] 5y ago
Cooking. You can make your lifting and general life higher quality, but nerd out over the science. There's a whole numbers part to it with nutrients, macros and calories.
Coding. Problem-solving part of gaming, can involve as much/little numbers as you like and you can create some thing of value for yourself, friends, society or whatever. Also makes you money. Maybe you can mod games if you can't quit.
Can lead to data mining, machine learning, web development, app design.. specializations are rather personal.

Dude, if you're a white hat in training, you gonna be rolling in dough. Grats to you! I can't code for shit, so....
That said, what are you into? Pursue that. Outdoors shit? Photography. Music? Learn an instrument. Me? There's a small airport nearby, I plan to learn to fly (thank you Tom Petty) when I save up some scratch.
Can't think of anything else? Travel. It expands your world view. Look into Contiki. They do tours for young'uns. You'll get a taste of numerous euro places, so you'll know where you want to blow a week or two in the future.
Again, cyber? Seriously? Good for you.
