If you are passionate about those hobbies and you are able to transmit that passion when you're talking to someone about that then it increases your SMV. Sports, Dangerous or creative activities seem to be the best.

I do boxing and music production and it seems to attract attention from people

Hobbies that involve physical activity are certainly higher SMV than collecting stamps or playing video games. Just reading car magazines and knowing all the details no one asked for, I would not really include in high SMV hobbies.

definately best hobbies are those where you improve yourself or build something. If you read car magazines for information is like watching TV news - useless information and a waste of time, especially if you cannot apply it.

Play the bongos like Matthew McConaughey.

I guess any hobby will increase SMV if you really enjoy it. Not because people will see that what you do is awesome but because you are going forward with yourself, fulfilling your passion, learning new things and having fun. If you like woodwork do it, if you like drawing or painting just do it, if you are passionate about birds get yourself a set of binoculars and creep on some birds. Whatever floats your boat.
I liked cars as far as I can remember. I buy cars, fix cars, mod cars but people don't really give a shit. I always thought people would look up to it, all the work you put in your car, it looks neat and drives great but people don't really appreciate it for various reasons. I always thought it's a malny hobby like gun shooting and hunting, man and his machine.
Well, guess not. I occasionally hear:"This guy just wants to show off lol" "who you wanna impress?" from random people, I guess that's how most of them think... friends and family ask me why don't I buy a nice TV or furniture or some other useless invention instead of parts and tools. "why put so much money in this POS?" they say "sell it and buy a normal car like most people!" they say.
Apart from that, occasional thumbs up on the street. I see only people who have the same passion and kids seem to be genuinely interested.
It's a good way to make friends with people that have the same hobby. Fellow petrolheads come up to you, ask questions, show you their rides etc... People don't have to understand, do something for yourself if it puts a smile on your face. And stop giving a fuck if your hobby is well perceived. Go stalk some birds or some shit.

Cars are great, but it's fucking expensive.

PM me if you want some tips on starting on a budget ;)
It is expensive as fuck but if you do labour youself you can save like 50%, that is if you have enough time to become a half time grease monkey. I am by no means wealthy, I have savings I don't touch but I cheap out on most everyday stuff, plan my budget and don't buy useless shit so I have more cash for parts. Takes lots of determination and pain but when you get into your seat and start the engine of your own racecar... you feel like a pedophile in a kindergarden...

Sure what are the best drugs on a bugdet? Srs though my R32 Skyline was fun but it's fire burned three times as bright and faded out.

you cannot go wrong with a miata. Also E36. Well, atleaset in Europe. Good for practice, if you break it, slip and crash into a curb you don't dwell and don't get depressed on it. R32 on the other hand, well... dream car, I'll surely get one when I have more cash ;)

R32 Skyline or VW? I had an R32 Skyline GTS-t about 10 years ago. Australia

ya do something you're passionate about. The same goes for your job and every other aspect of your life. Do what you want to do, don't try and fit anyone else's mold of what you should be doing (as long as it's not unhealthy)

Musicians and dancers seem to do well.

Built-in social proof. Activities that have a component of built-in physical fitness work well also.
