I keep bumping onto articles either here on reddit or Quora of importance of sleeping 8 hours. But I'm barely sleeping 5-6 if I'm lucky.
I'm 20+ something kid who's hustling all day and I find sleep like a waste if time. What's your thoughts on sleep?

Pretty sure ZMA is a waste of money if you're taking long-term. You're paying marketing guys for a marketing term - just get the three component supplements and find which work. Magnesium seems to be the most commonly-deficient in diets.

Zma and melatonin? I've usually seen one or the other.

No, but after changing my morning meal to something more healthy (skyr with nuts 'n' such) I longer feel sleepy during my working day, no matter how much sleep I've gotten.

The average is meant to be 8, but that's an average, people work in different ways; some need 9, some need 4, others need 6, etc...
If you feel refreshed after 6 hours of sleep, then that's fine.

No, there's people that can work with 4 hours of sleep a day.

I get 6 if I'm lucky.

I am getting 9-10 depends on the day. I’m a college freshman btw. Going to bed around 12 and waking up at 9-9:30 on weekdays. Weekends fluctuate btw waking up at 10 or 11 and going to bed at 1amish.
jwarner95 5y ago
You better be lifting like crazy to take advantage of that schedule.
-saltymangos- 5y ago
I’m staring to lift 3 times a week or something like that. Mon Wens Fri Sunday will be my new schedule I’m working on. It WAS three days a week but I’m bumping it to four.
jwarner95 5y ago
With that amount of sleep you can afford to work out 5-6 days a week working out each body part 2x a week
-saltymangos- 5y ago
I’m kinda new to working out so i don’t wanna hurt myself. plus doesn’t resting a day btw sessions help build hypertrophy?
jwarner95 5y ago
No you only need to give a specific muscle group 2-3 days of rest before hitting it again. Overall rest doesn’t matter. Other factors matter though including most importantly nutrition and second most sleep.
-saltymangos- 5y ago
hmmm okay.
so if i did shoulders and chest monday i should do legs and biceps today?
jwarner95 5y ago
Sure. Make sure you squat. Then on Sunday you should squat again (but do lighter weight and don’t do a complete leg workout).

Go to sleep earlier. Not saying this is necessarily the case for you but every college-aged kid who complains about getting no sleep is also the person who watches netflix or browses the internet for 3 hours a night.
Cut out any screentime right before bed and just get to sleep early. I know it might not be the most fun thing to have lights out by 10-10:30 every night but that's how you get your 8 hours in.
[deleted] 5y ago
I usually sleep six on weekdays, 10 ish on weekends

Yes.

As someone pointed out, it's an average. But sleeping is no more a waste than eating or breathing. It's necessary for a healthy mind and body-- which is the most important thing in your life… it IS your life.

Yes, I have my rules set in stone that I will sleep 8 hours whenever possible. Exceptions of course for parties, nights at a girls house, etc.
It’s a lot easier to manage life and sleep less when you’re young. But there is something to it. You look better, you are less stressed, etc. Your hormones are more under control. You feel good. Your body actually recovers from workouts
The reason why military training involves sleep deprivation is due to the stress factor. Not getting much sleep leads to you being more lazy/short sighted/stressed out. Combine that with all the physical activity, you’re burnt all the time.
I’ve done 6 months with getting only 4 hours of sleep a day and many weeks with only hours here and there. Sleeping is important.

only 4 hours of sleep in six months, must of been rough
redpharma7789 5y ago
Whoopsie. Thanks for spotting that.

You need to sleep.
gaki123 5y ago
9 if not 9:30
And i get lots of shit done
ThickSoild2802485 5y ago
Very rarely will I get a solid 8 hour nights sleep. This is due to me taking pre workout too late in the day. Is it hindering my ability to recover from workouts? Probably. Should I stop taking it? Yes, I should but I won't because working out without it is fucking boring.
Esquivo 5y ago
Yes, you definitely need AT LEAST 8 hours of sleep. Literally everything depends on your quality of your sleep/rest. Your enitre body regenerates when you sleep.
latinasonly 5y ago
I am in my early 20s. I get 8 hours of sleep most nights. When I workout a lot, I sometimes sleep 9 hours or more. When I sleep less I don't feel as alert and am more prone to make dumb errors (forgetting things, slower at mathematical calculations, more likely to break fragile parts)
that being said, I am getting back to sleep.
[deleted] 5y ago
You remind me of my best friend. He’s always say that sleep is a waste of time. It’s such an uneducated point of view and really just plain stupid. We know that we have to sleep or we die so how can it be a waste of time. We know that if we sleep when we’re sick we get well faster so it’s not a waste of time. We know that when you sleep you get better muscle growth.
Basically, all you’ve proven is that you don’t work out and if you do workout then you’re an idiot because you’re either A) not working out hard enough or B) wasting your time going to the gym because you’re sabotaging gains. I’ve never met anybody who works out hard that doesn’t need to sleep more than 7 hours. Unless you’re special, you’re not, get some fucking sleep. Unless you want to look like an old ugly ass mofo get some sleep.

I'm a 20 something that starts his day at 4am (lots of early work to do at the store) and do Martial arts 3 nights a week which tends to run a little late sometimes, generally until about 9 or 9:30. After I eat and shower, I'm asleep by 11 or 11:30 just to do it all again. I have found that any more than 6 hours makes it very difficult to get out of bed. As my instructor has told me before "I'll sleep when I'm dead". I wouldn't recommend any less than 5 hours, but if you find you're functioning okay on 6 that's perfectly fine IMO. If you find you're groggy, moody, unmotivated, etc, try adjusting your sleep schedule, but generally once I get myself moving in the AM I'm good to go for the 18 hr day.
[deleted] 5y ago
Same, martial arts makes it tough to get more than 6 hours of sleep for me too
