"You see football is a meritocracy. You aren't handed anything. You earn everything. Every single day. Over and over again. You have to prove it." - Tony Romo
This is one of the most RedPill things I've ever heard in the media. Romo's obviously applying in context to football but when I listened to that speech a firework just burst inside my head. Football is a meritocracy. So is life. The Red Pill gives all us subscribers an advantage; but as Romo phrased it so succinctly; "You aren't handed anything. You earn everything. Every single day."
He may no longer be the QB he was physically but I've got to give him credit for stepping up.

JohnnyBlack22 9y ago
I love the sentiment, but the NFL is actually a little bit of a false meritocracy. GMs and coaches want to make their drafting decisions look good, so they often give players they drafted highly undeserved playing time and extra chances, sometimes playing them over other, better players. Coaches, more than anything else, are risk averse.
Judgeing from the statistical body of work, it's very likely that Romo is a better QB than Dak; a true meritocracy would have him playing, but the coaches know that if Dak were to have bad game, they would not be faulted for starting him, whereas if Romo were to have a bad game, the entire media and fan base would be up in arms about switching away from Dak.
luckylosing 9y ago
Exactly, the Cowboys could lose a game with Romo throwing for 400 yards and 4 tds but if they lose all the fairweather fans would crucify him and the coaching staff.

This is why I hate the guys who say, "I used to be somebody"

All people care about is what are you bringing to the table now?

aanarchist 9y ago
well the problem is they didn't used to be somebody, they were just a guy who threw a ball around better than other people and got paid for it. he was an entertainer, not a producer or contributer. once his sports career ended he went back to who he really was, a below average intelligence man who happened to have above average physical genetics, ie a nobody. the entertainment industry is just another drug people introduce into their system that keeps them plugged in. the moment he's served his purpose he will be replaced, as there was no true lasting value coming from him, just junk food for the mind.
it has nothing to do with red pill male disposability, his value just happened to be artificial based on a superficial demand.

Meritocracy doesnt always work though. People get injured in football all the time. There are some great athletes you never heard about because someones leg bent the wrong way. There isn't just merit involved, but luck, and being in the right place at the right time.
[deleted] 9y ago
That's the point though, you give all you got to gain power, if something happens to you - your fault or not - it's gone.
Returnofthemack3 9y ago
also genetics. Most people lack the build to be competitive in football honestly
PinkySlayer 9y ago
Thats a meaningless distinction. The point is that if you are incapable, for any reason whatsoever, you do not get the position. Our society utterly rejects that. If you're enough of a basket case tranny or you're a woman who really wants to feel like she can wage war or fight fires, then merit goes to the back of the line, all that matters is your feefees. Men have rejected that notion of fairness bullshit since the beginning of our species because if you ignored the obviously capable tribe leader to let the weak kneed faggot try and lead your war party then your neighboring tribe would bathe in your blood. It's counterintuitive to our most basic instincts.

"what have you done for me lately?" ~some Eddie Murphy stand-up about women I think.
i_forget_my_userids 9y ago
It's from a Janet Jackson song. That part of the standup routine was based on the s song.
TyrannyVengeance 9y ago
But where Eddie misses the mark is men behave this way too. And where all of society misses the mark is in thinking this is a bad thing. They take it out of context and try and make it about loyalty when it's really about LIVING. It's not what have you done for ME lately, it's what have you DONE PERIOD lately. I would shorten in to LIVE MOTHER FUCKER. DO SOMETHING. LIVE. It's the most positive thing a person can be - living.
wench_enabler 9y ago
You're thinking of the Lauryn Hill song I think
Rhythmic 9y ago
Well then, keep it up while you still can.
There's an inherent problem with this attitude though, because this is what it inevitably leads to.
And when you get your ass kicked, your kids killed and your females fucked, it is almost as romantic as the BP crap - or so the hamster says.
To consciously choose this path is not very wise IMO.

There isn't a problem with this, this is beautiful. This is a king who lived, fought, conquered, and owned the world.
Every day you need to work to produce something in this world. Immerse in each moment, find beauty in the grind of life, enjoy the breeze while you run as much as you do fucking your girl.
All you have is the now, that's it. So fuck relying on past memories and mentally masturbating to what you've done.
We are all going to die, leave behind a good looking corpse and plenty of Polaroids hanging from your lifeline.
ImFeklhr 9y ago
I've never once heard anyone say that. Seems more like something you hear in movies.
[deleted] 9y ago
Sometimes it's verbatim to what I wrote.
Sometimes they say I used to be buff
No difference, they are talking about their past as if it's supposed to justify their failure in the present.
[deleted] 9y ago
Really? I've heard it all the time. I used to be X, or I would have been X, except.
ImFeklhr 9y ago
Oh I've encountered the attitude for sure. People who bloviate on past accomplishments. The concept is sound, I just had to laugh at the specific line; I can't imagine anyone saying it with a straight face.
Gawernator 9y ago
I'm pretty sure a lot of people care if you won the Medal of Honor etc. your statement is a little off.
Navy SEALS don't lose their prestige when they retire.
fanthor 9y ago
depends on what you mean by "prestige"
use it as leverage as in "i did this years ago, im definitely qualified for this"
or "yeah i did some crazy shit when i was young" kind of talk
sure it doesnt lose prestige.
but it definitely sucks when its over 10 years ago and its the only thing you have ever achieved
RGIIIsus 9y ago
It only matters because of what it might imply of who you are today. People will think you must be brave, strong, whatever right now. However, if people see you're now a pussy and not the same man that was awarded that Medal of Honor it doesn't mean shit to them.
Red_SoloCup 9y ago
No, but if you retire and turn into a piece of shit, then you do. The savage military guys I know who are still savages use the military background to augment their personality. For example, I know a guy who's a 3-stripe BJJ black belt (which means he's been training BJJ for ~25 years), an ex-marine, ex-SWAT, and has a few MMA fights under his belt. That's all well and good, but since he's still an absolute beast of a man, it all still applies and makes him one scary motherfucker. If he was now a fatass talking about how much of a badass he used to be, then all of that stuff is "glory days" like and it no longer would apply.

If your life is based on that heroic action you took 7 years ago you're going to be a sad dude.
If you were a SEAL 5 years ago, you don't get bonus points if you're a fat slob now.
Nothing you do lasts a lifetime, you must continually produce or people move on.
People forget MoH & SEALs if they turn to sacks of unproductive shit.
Gawernator 9y ago
Some of them are a little fat now lol. They still are able to use those prior achievements to enter other venues in life.

[deleted] 9y ago
Our nation chose to recognize the sacrifice of those who currently wear the uniform & deploy so we can sit comfortably safe at home.
Doesn't have shit to do with how you measure a person you know.
tekn0_ 9y ago
There is nothing wrong in honouring the sacrifices of the past soldiers so as to inspire the current generation of soldiers. In fact you learn the most red pill lessons from the ones who faced the toughest shit in their lives. Indeed they are worthy of being honored.

[deleted] 9y ago
To be fair, the military can be a fantastic thing. As someone who did 7 years and then went to school, it was a game changer. Learned a lot about myself, my country men, war, and it was my redpill before I came here. For young men that need a slap in the face, I will always recommend joining the service.

Merica911 9y ago
I don't know what's worse in life.. Being mediocre but relevant and have everyone talk how mediocre you are. Or just being completely irrelevant and no one is talking about you.
But either way, what goes up must come down.. It's your imprint you made that people will continue to talk about when you're away.

[deleted] 9y ago
Dunno bro, shittons of politics and favoritism.
[deleted] 9y ago
Much respect to Romo for his display of class, stoicism and leadership in the face of personal disappointment. I might have to root for the Cowboys now.
suske127 9y ago
"Life is a meritocracy" In essence this is true
Each society runs differently. Western society become less merit based every day (which is a big reason Trump actually managed to win - the revival of capitalism/meritocracy)
This is why I personally despise communism. Not just because of American propaganda (I sure hope) But, because I believe in getting what you work for/meritocracy, which is the essence of capitalism (communism's opposite)
RIchardjCranium 9y ago
One of the things that I like about sports is there's no nepotism or favoritism at least on the field. There isn't an NFL quarterback that has his job because his uncle plays golf with the team owner or one of his frat buddies slid his resume to the top of list. It's a fierce competition, the best person has the job, and there's always 100 guys right on your ass wanting your job.
And unlike many businesses you have a brief window of success when you are young. Everyone eventually gets replaced due to age or lack of performance. The Tom Brady's and the Peyton Manning's are the exception to the rule the average NFL player plays for three years.
I'm sure it's a bitter pill to swallow for Tony realizing that his time is up but that's the nature of the game and kudos to him for showing some class.

What killed football is when the Blue Pill culture invaded it.
Ratings are way down.
It's time might have passed... I've stopped watching.
Back in the "good old days" you could watch football and know you were getting away from the Feminist bullshit, but now you have that and other shit that shouldn't be there trying to brainwash you. The commercials are a problem with all of television and equally so in football.
Turn the television off and that includes football.
Find something better to do than waste three hours.
(maybe go to the gym and workout)
[deleted] 9y ago
They have so many annoying female sports "reporters" now also. Its gotten ridiculous.
prodigy2throw 9y ago
I can't sit down and waste my Sundays on football anymore. Sunday is "get ready for the week ahead of you day"
[deleted] 9y ago
they tried to double their market size by bringing in women... turned out that shit just scared off guys. sports increasingly have shitty ratings, and they're only getting worse... to the point where ESPN is fucked so hard. they've committed to licensing deals with the sports leagues, but they're beginning to lose forced placement in cable packages, and many are cutting cable altogether, losing 8% of subscribers in 2015 alone. because the contracts are all multi-year, and the consumer trends are only accelerating, unless a drastic change somehow sucks them out of this problem, the company will be forced into bankruptcy within a few years.

It's hard to unplug, even for RedPillers.

Turn that shit off and never look back.
NeoreactionSafe 9y ago
It's so simple to just turn it off.
But it's an addiction... people must break the addiction using their own will.
It's like if you saw a smoker and you said:
"Excuse me. Did you know that smoking is a really bad idea and that it's very addictive and you should just stop doing it?"
What will the smoker say?
He will say:
"Fuck off dude I want my fucking addiction and don't need you sticking your truthful suggestion into my face."
...then ten minutes later he secretly senses inner sadness that he is incapable of breaking free and knows deep down he's weak. That weakness was the reason he lashed out. (so he grabs another cigarette)

[deleted] 9y ago
I have been noticing this the past couple of 2-3 years. It's getting annoying as fuck. I mean, I want to watch football, not hear about athletes showing their political stances and all that.
[deleted] 9y ago
Agree re: political stances and blue pill commercials.
But football is still fucking sweet. Those guys put in work all week just to try to rip each others' heads off on Sunday, plus all the mind-games and high-risk decision-making from the coaches--can't find better entertainment in my opinion.
The ratings are down because the level of play is down because the league has been limiting full-contact practice time, which in turn leads to shitty play and more injuries during games. But it's still fun to watch in my opinion.
[deleted] 9y ago
Exactly. I still love football as a sport and still like watching it, but they need to get rid of the political stances, the commercials (like the No More domestic violence ones) and also the ridiculous celebration flags.
I'm probably still gonna be watching football five years from now, but they gotta get away from that stuff. Also, the London games are a little annoying at times and feels like oversaturation.
Azzmo 9y ago
There is a discussion to be had for whether the merits are worth the detriments. It's fun and it can be inspirational, but it can satisfy your competitive urges vicariously.
Lately I've been conflating the downsides of sports fandom with those of porn use. If we can find balance, neither has to be a problem. But if we immediately look to it for satisfaction and we do it frequently, it can artificially satisfy our needs. Something to ponder on.
Personally, I've cut my relationship with sports down to just watching the replay of my local college Football and Basketball team without the commercials. So at most a couple hours a week and almost no thinking about it or online forums outside of that. And no fantasy sports.
NeoreactionSafe 9y ago
It's time to just turn it off.
There was a time when it was good... a decade or two ago you could watch football and never see anything related to Feminism.
Now they wear pink to show their support for SJW causes... fuck that shit.
Turn it off.
Go to the gym for three hours.

When I see people talking about prostate cancer as much as breast cancer, we'll talk. Until then, go cuck somewhere else
SmokingGiraffeti 9y ago
The whole month of November dumb ass
But I'm sorry your feelings are hurt because no one talks about your feelings bud
Edit: If it wasn't clear, during the month of October NFL players are allowed to wear pink to honor and recognize those who have suffered from breast cancer and to promote breast cancer awareness. Much in the same way that during the month of November men are encouraged to grow their beards and mustaches out to honor and recognize those who suffer from male health issues, mainly prostate cancer.
(As a side note, breast cancer effects men too.)
So if you can see past your own ego you'd realize that both are good causes. But since it doesn't revolve around you, I doubt you'll ever figure it out.
[deleted] 9y ago
You don't see the irony in crying about SJWs and then turning around and crying that your [insert gender issue here] isn't being brought to light like you'd like, do you?
Got the name calling in too, just for good measure.
PinkySlayer 9y ago
Breast cancer "awareness" is a perverse joke that plays on the feelings of simps like you. Name one woman you know who still needs to be made aware of one of the most easily treated cancers in existence. You can't, because everyone fucking knows by now. It's just a charade to make women believe that the NFL and the alpha monsters that make it survive care about them because womenz.
SmokingGiraffeti 9y ago
I'm sorry you're angry for some reason, but see my other comment. It's not only for awareness but also to honor the men and women who have suffered from breast cancer. Also I'm sure most people are aware of breast cancer probably because it's the most common cancer in woman, but wearing pink in the month of October is a simple way to promote check ups/screenings. And if that bothers you this much, you have issues and should see a psych.
PinkySlayer 9y ago
It's a blatantly obvious ploy to get female fans, you're so caught up in your emotions about "honoring" people who have had breast cancer that you can't even see past them. Which is a testament to the effectiveness of the campaign. And yes, as a matter of fact it does bother me when corporate monoliths like the NFL and Susan G komen exploit cancer survivors and victims to line their own pockets while doing nothing for survivors. But hey, you watched some guys wear pink cleats, you're obviously in clear morally.

amekooky 9y ago
sports really do help build character. I had a plastic glove playing middle school baseball my first year because my parents didn't know what to buy me since I never played as a kid, and they were immigrants. I couldn't even catch a ball, but with persistence by my junior year I was starting on the varsity team.

you can see on his face he DIDN'T want to be there and say those things, I mean, romo is a decent qb. Thier is no doubt in that. Dak is just playing better right now and has got them to an 8-1 record. ( at the time of the speech) so yeah, he gunna be bench warming and to come out and say the things he did. MAD respect!

[deleted]
nzgs 9y ago
Almost everything we do in life is largely the consequence of our genetics. When you look at the types of people who are successful at writing code or who are successful in retail sales it's impossible to ignore how those occupations place selective pressures that result in the best workers having certain genetic traits in common. Sport is not unique in this sense. In actual fact the meritocracy in american football is greater because of supply and demand; the supply of world class players is very small, and the demand for them is enormous, therefore there is huge competition.
Auvergnat 9y ago
true that. But at the same time, you can't deny that high-level sport competition requires massive amounts of work.
Holy shit, I think I can see both sides of the privilege/merit argument with that example. Luck/privilege will help you start, but once in, only those who work hard will manage to stay in there. Those who didn't have the luck/privilege are quick to complain they never got the chance and, bitter, to downplay the importance of hard work, while those who made it thanks to their hard work might overlook the fact that it might not have been enough had they not been given the easy start somehow.
Does this make me a feminist? lol
iamneptuno 9y ago
To even get to the NFL, you must be genetically gifted. Then starts the competition, yes, but this is very far from "I'm not handed nothing".
Also, I'm surprised he even knows the word "meritocracy". Usually professional athletes are also professional retards.
Cartz1209 9y ago
While genetics can have an important role in sports, you see more often than one would expect exceptions. Look at Messi for example. Small, light guy and yet 1 of the best soccer players of all times... If based only on genetics, no one would give a crap about him.
TheTruthTeller1337 9y ago
In european football your muscularity isn't nearly as impactful as in american football. Excess muscle makes you slow, that you can't afford.
European football favors good lung capacity, fast twitch muscle fibers, and mesomorphs/ectomorphs (this is huge, being lean and fast is key).
Genetically speaking, european football is less restrictive, even if you have bad genetics you can play it your entire life with your friends, because a good foot technique goes a long way. Even strikers can just be good at scoring (foot/head aim) and get away with it, even if they have bad technique.
So yeah, european football is the most popular sport by a number of reasons, not by chance.
Lsegundo 9y ago
You can't choose to be Messi. I guarantee you there are a lot of players in lower leagues that worked longer and harder than he did.
I'm not saying you shouldn't work at things. Being a pro athlete is definitely a gift + hard work. If you don't have the gift no amount of hard work will get you there.
crushedbyfistofgod 9y ago
Meritocracies exist within their own paradigm, though. Naturally, he is genetically gifted compared to us normal folks. With rare exceptions, any professional athlete will be in some way physically superior in a given aspect. I'm stronger, faster, and in better health than David Wells ever was...but he could throw a baseball in a way that I never could, even as a college baseball player myself. Within the game, he had exceeded me by every measure of success, simply because he had more gas and pinpoint control in his arm. And that's okay. He couldn't last a minute in my career field. We are both high achievers within our own meritocracies. No one has the capability to be a Supreme Alpha, operating at the height of every physical and intellectual ecosystem simultaneously. So we generally try to be men in the primal sense, and masters in one or two specialities that will put us into the upper reaches of our chosen meritocratic systems.
PinkySlayer 9y ago
Good point. Side note, who sings the song your username comes from? I started hearing it in my head as soon as I read it but can't remember who wrote it.

Horus_Krishna_2 9y ago

BoyWhoreWithASword 9y ago
Well yeah you need the genetics and the hard work.
But all the hard work in the world means shit without the genetics. So yes the NFL was a possibility for you while for others it's only a fantasy.
sugar_free_haribo 9y ago
No, the NFL was not a possibility for that guy lol.
ntvirtue 9y ago
So why is it that every time a player becomes dominant they change the rules to prevent him from dominating.

34,000 passing yards, 247 TD passes. And being the Cowboys all time passing leader with a career QB rating of 97.1 is definitely worthy of his contract. Do people forget he was undrafted? Because Dallas wasn't paying him anywhere near that his first 5 years in the league.
Ranby21 9y ago
Imo it's the Ewing effect, he's great on paper but he doesn't seem absolute compared to cam newton or Brady
