"You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with," said Jim Rohn. This expression is parroted so often that it has practically become a cliche; yet, despite its popular usage, not many people take the message to heart. Essentially, Rohn is saying that you need to surround yourself with winners if you want to be a winner. Toxic people will absolutely nuke your emotional frame and well-being if you spend any time with them.
The Red Pill is about sexual strategy and, by extension, getting your ducks in a row and your shit in gear. There have been many great posts in the past about developing a strong frame and sense of will, there is no need for me to elaborate here. But I do think there is a gap in the Red Pill archives that delves into the importance of removing toxic people from your life. IllimitableMan briefly touches upon this idea at the end of this blog post, and while the article doesn't exactly focus on the point I refer to, I suggest you put it on your reading list; it contains a wealth of great information.
It is unfortunate that I had to discover these lessons alone while dealing with my own toxic family (although Whisper has offered some great advice specific to my situation), but that is what makes the manosphere awesome - it allows us to draw on each other’s experiences to ensure we don't all make the same mistakes again and again.
Specifically, I wish to identify five types of toxic individuals: The Judge, The Depressed, The Emotional, The Religious and The Victim.
The Judge
The Judge is the man who has such a large ego that he believes he he understands what fundamentally drives people. He thinks that he has a strong grasp of the human condition and is often compelled to voice his opinion regarding other people, as if anyone really cares what he has to say.
You often hear The Judge criticizing fatties who are at the gym or guys practicing game, implying that the efforts these individuals are applying to fix their problems aren't genuine.
Not only does The Judge suffer from an attribution error of what is motivating these people, he is unable to identify his own biggest fault: envy.
It's no joke when we say your friends are going to start to fall away as you become a better man. As my squat approaches three plates I have to get up twice a day to mobilize my shitty hip flexors including foam rolling and active stretches. My roommates (and my siblings when I’m home visiting the fam) do not hesitate to make fun of how I am "trying to become a supple leopard."
But deep down these people envy you. They hate you. They hate the fact that you remind them of how sheep-like and unspecial they are. As the Green Goblin said in the original Spider Man movie – [the one thing people like better than a hero is a hero who fails] (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vng1P29QbX4&t=0m31s).
The Depressed
Then you have the person who means well but cannot perform because he is depressed. I don’t think I need to elaborate here, avoid these people at all costs. If you yourself suffer from depression and you aren’t in the company of people who mope around all day, I’ll point out that it’s true that psychologists claim it is a result of a chemical imbalance in the brain, but 9/10 times you can fix this by treating your body well – sleep enough, exercise once in a while and don’t put shit in your body.
The Emotional
The depressed are just a subgroup of a larger class of individuals – those who are ruled my emotion. In TRP we constantly discuss the idea of “frame”. Dispensing of the metaphors, frame is mastery over your emotional state, not allowing others to provoke a reaction from you. When a woman falls into your frame it means that you are in control of her emotional state – she is intrigued, drawn to the persona you’ve crafted for yourself, whether you are genuine or not.
The emotional individual (read: women and “beta” men) is not in control of his emotions. He despises confrontation and lacks the cojones to take a risk, whether in the sexual, professional or social setting. He would rather bend over and take it up the ass than voice that he is not, in fact, a faggot. He’s the chump who buys a girl a train ticket when she claims she “forgot to buy one” before boarding, an incident that happened not five minutes before I wrote this. He is the stupid fuck who gives the basic bitch on Facebook a huge ego because he validates her photo with that stupid doggy filter. He is the jealous boyfriend that doesn’t do more than give you angry eyes when you clearly hit on his girlfriend of two years and she eats that shit up.
The problem with spending time with these people, and women in general (notice how white knights tend to have lots of female friends), is that they begin to rub off on you. It is very, very difficult to remain in control of your own emotional state when you are surrounded by people who are not in control of their own.
To be fair, most boys who suffer from the inability to control their emotions are a product of their environment. This is not to say that it is a valid excuse for being a pansy, but this leads me into the next category:
The Religious
Before I say anything I want to point out that there is nothing inherently wrong with religion. Many people draw comfort from the fact that there is a greater purpose, and there is nothing wrong with that. The issue begins when the religious individual in question starts to impose his morals on others. Specifically, when a parent instills feelings of religious guilt in a child.
TRP doesn’t have room for moralizing because morals (which are by definition subjective) cloud rational judgement. It will be impossible for you to figure out what you want if those around you are subjecting you to a subjective moral code. You must spend some time away from these people, if only to facilitate the process of introspection. In my case it involved giving up an extremely lucrative career opportunity to get some time away from my religious family to figure out what I really want.
It's more important that a decision be your choice than that it be the "best" choice. The only important thing is that whatever you do, you do it for you, not because you are afraid of what others will say.
-Whisper
The Victim
Finally, we come to the last class, The Victim. The Victim is a victim of fate, of circumstances beyond his control, or so he will have you believe. In fact, we see The Victim pretty often within our own walls here at TRP – how often does some newb post about how he can’t lift and eat properly for whatever reason? How often does some loser make excuses about how he can’t pick up women because he has some emotional problem?
Ultimately The Victim fails to take responsibility. And this is the crux of TRP – taking responsibility for your failures, your inability to pick up women, your inability to make six figures, your inability to squat three plates – when it comes down to it, 99% of the time there’s no reason that you can’t do any of these things except for the fact that you haven’t put in the time.
Remove these people from your life immediately. Out of all the types of people I’ve mentioned, Victims are by far the most insidious, luring you in with talk of accomplishing great things “if not for X”. It’s a terrible habit to blame shift, and you’ll find yourself doing it more and more if those around you don’t take responsibility for their failures.

Some of the most toxic people in my life ar my mother and brother. As a younger man I had some depressing moments of my life, considering sucicide etc.
Now I have this stigma of being lazy and with no ambition. Also not being intelligent among my family. My close friends are always amazed to see my mother treat me as the black sheep.
Welk Im financially independent of my mother now which has greatly improved our relationship. If she ever pisses me off I can simply leave.
Mckallidon 10y ago
Yep. My half my family resents me for being better, the other half I will never be good enough for. Fuck 'em. I don't understand why shitty people think they can lay bullsht on you constantly and expect a phone call.
BlackJ1 10y ago
One thing I found helpful to me when I consider friends is that if they are helping me to improve, they aren't helping me at all.
Find friends that encourage growth and development.

Tfw I'm all those qualities...

This is a good post. I think it's good to get some positive, actionable stuff out there for guys. OTOH, sometimes it's really hard to be rid of the toxic people, especially the ones lower than you. They tend to want to cling, and will shame you for wanting to leave them. Leave them anyway.
We could make all sorts of categories of toxic people. Another might be the nit-picker. Nothing is ever good enough for the nit-picker. That person will take anything you do and try to improve on it because "you weren't quite good enough; it could be better." I guess that's a variant of The Judge. (And a little like this post...ooops.)

"The Depressed" is toxic? I had the impression that it's just someone who needs support, the opposite of being stepped on.
If you are not depressed yourself you can actually be one of the few who can help him, or destroy him.
Mckallidon 10y ago
I always try to lift up the depressed a little because some people just need that spark, but some will drag you down. Be mindful of if you're enabling a cripple or truly spending your time wisely.
akolyteofthecentury 10y ago
I've been struggling with depression, got diagnosed roughly a year ago. The only thing I found has helped is to be active all the time. Not so much being social, just busy in general - not giving myself time to think too much.
Sure, some may need support, but some can't be helped because they don't want to get better. Wallowing in self-pity is a beautifully comfortable thing to do. Tough love can help, most will hate you for "hating" on them though. Bottom line: don't help/support anyone unless they are already doing something to get better by themselves.
newCodeYorik 10y ago
Agreed. A depressed person can suck the life out of you if he/she is simply spreading the depression and not trying to get better.

What do you do when this toxic person is your father, and when you live in a country where setting it out on your own is not an option for matters of personal safety?
Also congratulations on reaching the 3 plate squat level man.
FieldLine 10y ago
Ask /u/HumanSockPuppet, he can give you better advice relating to your specific situation.
And I haven't quite hit three plates yet - I'm close, but I've had to suspend the linear progression while I work on my mobility.
[deleted] 10y ago
I'm "the victim". Slowly working on it though and sorting my shortcomings out.

I like having a good pessimist in the group. It allows me to think of my options.
RedPimpin 10y ago
this can't be said enough, just this weekend i realized i have to ditch a very good friend that i know for 10+ years because lately he has been doing some snake shit, sad really because at one point me and him were like brothers
Repsych 10y ago
Keep at it man and you can make a better friend than him. I know too how shitty it is when friends turn on you for bettering yourself.

just bought the subble leopard :D
tronicdata 10y ago
Good post, what about being a good friend? What qualitites would make you a friend worth keeping around?
[deleted] 10y ago
I would add 'the salesman'. The dude who befriends you in hopes that you'll buy their shit. They're not your real friend.
GrowlingBears 10y ago
The king, the prince, the general, courtier, the fool. What the fuck are you talking about? What single dimensional world do you live in? All these people are exactly the same personality trait just with various different adjectives applied to them.
SDR184 10y ago
Good thought provoking post.
I'd suggest a possible sub-set or modification of "The Religious" to include "The Dogmatic".
People who are driven by dogma are toxic. Clinging to whatever their viewpoint is with closed minds and shunning critically thinking, they are a huge waste of your mental resources. Whether it be politics, religion, or crackpot conspiracy theory, they won't be swayed by logic or facts.
Ultimately, having dogmatic people in your social circle means that you have to deal with their bullshit outlook, and calling them on it usually will provoke a severe social backlash from them that could affect your social standing.
Cut them loose.
TryDoingSomethingNew 10y ago
Yes, I noticed that right away when I read the post. It's important to make that distinction.
Truly religious (in a healthy way) people are pretty much the finest quality of people I've ever known. However, religious in the sense that my mother was, basically dysfunctional, is destructive and toxic, and will damage you internally and in social growth.
TheRedStoic 10y ago
Eh. "The dogmatic" should be it's own group imo. After all, a rigid reliance on a system doesn't mean the system is religious.
I've met dogmatic straight edge who aren't religious, dogmatic economists, dogmatic notch counters.
Whatever. Their dogma gets in the way of a healthy balanced life, so it's bad. Dogma leads to more dogma.
DigitalDegenerate 10y ago
Dogmatic types are one in the same with the judge. The judges don't come out with their judgement without some sort of dogma guiding their shitty ego driven opinions.
SDR184 10y ago
I agree that there are some cross-over definitions.
However, I wouldn't lump Judges into Dogmatic types. They are two different personalities.
Judges tend to be more fluid in their base principles, jumping from one position to another based on their need to feel superior in a particular circumstance. Dogma doesn't really matter to them as long as they can feel superior. Often they are harder to spot than a pure dogmatic, because their position will change to suit the circumstance.
Dogmatic types tend to use dogma to feel superior regardless of the situation, however they cling to their tenets without regard for evidence or logic. If you happen to fall within their dogma, you'll be their best friend, but when you stand outside of it, they judge you based on their one dimensional dogma.
FieldLine 10y ago
A valid point - the reason I chose religion specifically is because it's an area that I personally had to deal with and it's something I feel comfortable writing about.
And if I'm going to level with you, when I was fleshing out the ideas that I wanted to cover, religion was the first one I came up with. I'm biased because of the particular challenges I had to overcome.

If your toxicity problems are coming from your family what do you do?
R3v4mp3d 10y ago
Cut off you family? Duh!
No, really. In nature, once the baby is ready, it goes out and makes a family/ nest/ pack of its own. Yes, you could bring counter arguments for certain species, but for the others, imagine being fully alone. They are fully alone until they form a new family. You have tens of thousands of people in your city (I presume), so you're never really alone.
Cut them loose and don't look back unless they change.

When you say 3 plates, do you mean 3 plates per side or 1.5 plates per side?
I'm not sure how that nomenclature works.
About the toxic people, you also get the one ring to rule them all level of toxic person that have all of the above, they also like to search out others like them so that they can blame the world as a collective. It's like a cancer.

wishicouldsimplify 10y ago
3 plates generally means 3 plates on one side.
