In case some of the newer guys don't know, pre-selection is a great example of the groupthink women exhibit. Since women are all about conformity, if everybody else likes X, then an individual women will like X as well. This is how name brands form, how fashion makes things go out of style. Advertisers simply scream "everybody else loves X, you should too!" and they believe it.
When applied to men, the same goes. Once you're taken, all the other girls will recognize you as someone worth being in a relationship with, since this other girl approves of you.
Edit: as /u/RPsixthree pointed out, this is just another form of social proof.
OP of that post: "some of her friends have been super friendly, always saying hi and wanting to chat, every time I run into them."
On a side note, the fact that her friends are now trying to swoop him isn't that surprising. After all, honor is a male abstraction.

That whole sub makes me feel sick. Such a bunch of wet validation-seeking betas.

It's not about being in a relationship with somebody.
Sure, that is one scenario, but the base of that scenario is social proof.
I remember some years ago when I had no idea about these concepts I was on my way to a party with a couple of friends. We got there by train and we met a huge group of people at the train station.
I knew many of them, which lead to me moving around the train during our commute and talking to at least 20 different people.
By the end of the ride some chicks had requested I try the drinks they brought with them. I did not know them. Never seen them before. All they knew about me was that I know a lot of people.
The more social you are and the more people you know, the more options you will have.

Good point, I forgot about that being the base of things. I've amended it to reflect that.

I absolutely believe in pre-selection but I don't think it is the sole factor at work in cases like these.
Your body language and demeanour change when you're in a relationship because you've accomplished something you purposefully set out to do. This brings on a feeling of triumph and superiority, maybe even a little relief. You'll walk differently, talk differently, think differently and interpret the world differently.
Thinking differently may in some cases bring on cognitive biases such as Baader-Meinhof Phenomenon. The same may manifest a Contrast Effect for those observing you.
As i said above, pre-selection is most definitely a big factor but only for those who know of your relationship status change or see you with your girl. Random coffee shop girl is probably just attracted to the confidence you exude from getting your end away most nights.

Knowing where your next lay is coming from means you're far less bothered what other women think of you.

You're not looking for anything. You already have a girl. You can like other girls but aren't wondering if they will give you what you need. You don't need.
And so, they are attracted. Getting attraction as a man from women is not that hard, almost the only way to fail is to be beta.
reddiforlove 12y ago
I completely agree with this.
I haven't been in an LTR for almost 4 years, but the most common thing a girl will say to me when we first meet is "You don't have a girlfriend?" (A question that I never once received in my life when I was still plugged in, gf or no)
Internalizing an aloof mentality and outcome independence towards women will do wonders for getting those pre-selection sweats going in her nether-regions.

I thinks it's more biological, why look for a mate when that woman has clearly found a good one there
ColdEiric 12y ago
Why find out if a guy is rich and masculine enough on her own, when her friends have already found one? "But I was supposed to be with John here! It's fate!"
CloakedOrchid 12y ago
Exactly. You could spend days or weeks doing the groundwork to figure out if a guy has his shit together, if he has money and a nice car and a nice dick and he knows how to fuck...But hey, SHE's dating that guy, so SHE must have already done all of that work. Hey, that guy's looking more attractive already...

I'm sure that's the reason for quite a few women. However, my female friends are friendly to my boyfriend because he's my boyfriend and they have to get along with him. Likewise, I make an effort to be friendly to my friend's long-term boyfriends/husbands who I might ordinarily not want to talk to because I know I'm gonna have to deal with them as long as they're with my friends. Plus, if they're with my friend, I assume they don't have flirtatious motives for talking to me and it allows me to let my guard down.
Not disagreeing that some of these women in your cases are romantically interested but I think there are a number of reasons for the increased friendliness.

You don't even need to be in a relationship. Just go out somewhere in public alone or with guy friends, then go out somewhere in public with a hot chick at your side. The difference in attention and treatment by other females is palpable.
jkonine 12y ago
Chicks don't care about what guys think. That's a fact.
Chicks care about what other chicks think. If some girl thinks you're good enough that they want to enter a long term relationship with you, then other women will notice. Not because of you being any different.
Niemamnick 12y ago
It's about the confidence you gain and which you unconsciously display.
rational_choice_roc 12y ago
I'm having the reverse happen sort of with me. I dated a girl who was not worthy of me at all (I'm college educated, full-time job, etc.). She's young, immature and spoiled. I knew she was putting me through massive shit tests and bullshit and broke it off. That being said, after a few weeks I notice she still has all of our relationship pictures up on Facebook (including me and her as her profile picture)...She's using my clout to make herself feel validated to get other dudes. At least I think...there's literaly no reason for her to still have that picture up. Am I going crazy?
jungleman4545 12y ago
I was so surprised when this happened to me. There was a girl in our group - we went out to drink a couple of times - she didn't even know who I was, but when I started dating her friend, she suddenly started to like me too.
Bottom line: If someone thinks you are cool, other people will think that too.

A factor at play here is also the scarcity principal. When you are off the market a woman in your life loses the freedom of the choice she might have perceived with you as a possible mate. People do not like to lose the freedom of choice and they will react accordingly.

It really is the truth. I use this principle in my life often, when I was in funk, a little while back, I said screw it, planned the next Saturday out to a t. I worked out extra hard, went shopping, did all my "facial beauty procedures" scrubs the lot. And went to town by myself, (I meet people quite quickly, have high energy and a strong frame, so I didnt feel to have a friend or wing I need to manage)
I live in a really nice city, and went to the street where a lot of clubs bars are, and just fucking picked up chicks, any chick I wanted I just went up to. My frame, is just there aint shit wrong with my im fucking 6"2 well dressed, and positive.
I had a great fucking time, got more than a few numbers, kissed closed a few times, took A lot of pictures. Just had a fucking great day.
That night I got home, buzzing, having this feeling this feeling like I enriched my own life today, and created good vibes in other people. I made them I feel sexy and I did too.
Its so easy to build a harem in basically one day if you know how to maintain it, I kept in contact with 4-6 of the girls I met that day and banged all of them.
My point is really, the pictures I took that day went on to BBM and my other social apps, and would rotate them a lilttle bit. The girls I met would so "Wow, So how many women DID you meet that day" or "I though I was special" knowing full well, that they saw me with other chicks that day.
I would just respond with "yeah! I had a good day with you" and keep it moving.

I'd like to see a full-on article on this statement alone.
I know, I know, BE the change you want to see. Thing is, I'm not sure how I'd flesh out this idea, and besides, I like reading what others think about topics I'm interested in.

Wow wow wait, preselection confirmed? You mean that the most basic concept that is accepted by pretty much everyone is confirmed now?
