Long time lurker, first post on this sub. I don't know if anyone else has said anything about this movie, so I apologize if I am being redundant.
I finally got around to watching the Joseph Gordon-Levitt film Don Jon, and I have to say, it's an excellent film to watch for those of us who have swallowed the Red Pill. I think that it not only shows examples of good Game, especially when he's dismissing shit-tests and hamstering, it also shows what can happen if you allow a woman to control the relationship and do not maintain frame. In addition, I think the whole overall plot about him battling porn addiction is fantastic, because it shows that porn is a stupid distraction from the real world, and while it doesn't hurt Jon's Game in the movie, it can hurt one's Game. And while, yes, the plot about him actually finding love and an LTR may not be congruent with the goal of everyone on TRP, but I think the happier ending is an example of what happens when one maintains their goals and focuses on making one's self better, rather than focusing on finding "The One."
I'm not trying to promote the movie for gain or anything, just trying to recommend it as an example, especially for newbies on this sub, of the many situations we often talk about.

Hey, I know this is an old post, but I just want you to know I totally agree with you on the importance of this to the red pill. I think a lot of guys here missed the some things.
For one, JGLs relationship with Julianne Moore is not a LTR true love situation. They are just having fun, but at the same time being honest and real with each other. I lost my virginity to an older woman with issues and for some reason have mostly dated older women. Their relationship definitely rang true, older women are experienced, they don't care about "Knight-in-shining armor" BS or shit tests or anything a lot of modern "pretty girls" do(Scarlett Johannsens character and the rest of the HB club girls. It's just two people using each other for intimacy and good, hot sex.
I think it's theme about addiction was really eye opening, and how everyone in modern times has something that distracts themselves from authentic humanity, whether it's porn, football, church, rom-coms, cell phones, cars, the gym, etc.
People complain that JGL goes from red pill to beta to blue pill, but I'd say at the beginning, while he's alpha as fuck, his life is meaningless and routine. The Scarlett Johannsen taking over his life was great, he was definitely beta, but at the end, JGL has become a man. He's comfortable missing a workout to have fun and interact, he's cool, calm, collected, and I think that's more important about being Red Pill than just acting alpha.
Overall, loved the movie. Definitely think it's a great take on modern life and relationships.

There's been a few Don Jon analysis posts, more so in the movie sub, but my take is Joseph Gorden-Levitt uses the movie as a cautionary take for people who believe in PUA. It criticizes the shallowness of PUAs and promotes 'real' relationships over one night stand culture. Essentially, Don Jon's PUA lifestyle isn't worth it on a moral level, and he finds happiness and pleasure after settling for a post-wall hag.
Believing that someone like Don Jon could pull a 180 and 'see the error in his way' is feminist propaganda at best. The guys watching this film are essentially told to settle for a "meaningful" relationship by losing frame and turning into a self-reflecting beta. Meanwhile, the brings-nothing-to-the-table failure of a woman reaps all the benefits, because 'he likes her just the way she is," give me a break.

This. IMO, it's more of a must-see for the guys over at /r/nofap. The points about his relationship with the young blonde are well taken though.
TurgidMeatWand 11y ago
Umm did we watch different movies? He pedestaled the hot blonde, went beta, and fell into a porn hole. Ms-post-wall-my-family-is-dead didn't try to shove blue pills down his throat and instead offered him something he never had before, empathy and a personality. Sure it's unlikely to happen in real life but I do know of at least one post wall that didnt look nearly as good good as the one in the film become a now n' then plate to a much younger alpha for awhile.

We watched the same movie. You don't need a girl to turn you blue pill, he did that on his own when he pedestaled the HB 10, lost frame and she set the rules of the relationship. The difference between us is you're willing to let the exception act as the rule.
"See! You can find a meaningful relationships if you stop seeking hot ass! Literally anyone can provide it, don't forget life-beaten older women, isn't it much better!?"
In terms of an LTR or plate, why settle for someone significantly older - for their life experience and wisdom? Fuck your mom instead.
TurgidMeatWand 11y ago
Okay , I get what you're saying. Her post wall ass was still in good shape though. My biases are eschewed, being gay the only real wall guys hit is getting sloppy and not being able to pick up guys who have an age limit.

I saw the movie. There are a couple of pro-TRP points within the narrative, but I wouldn't call it a true "TRP movie". Don Jon's PUA skill is illustrated as being successful on a couple of levels: he is fit, grooms well (if you're into that kind of style?), keeps is place clean, and is ambitious about his job and personal aspirations (i.e., he's going to school to improve himself and his chances of promotions/advancement). If you are not at the LTR stage and are only focused on plates or ONS, then it is a brief glimpse into how to be successful. I say a brief glimpse because it doesn't show how hard he works to achieve these traits--none of it is easy! For most people new to TRP, it's an entire paradigm shift, so exposing them to the end product might convince them, but it doesn't motivate them and doesn't teach them the necessary discipline to be successful in this manner.
Don Jon's girl friend played by Scarlet Johansson, the one that he thinks is worth the LTR, walks all over him. Continually. She doesn't respect him and there isn't much communication on boundaries. Consider the scene where they are shopping for some curtain rod (or whatever, unimportant). She lays into him, telling him he cannot clean his own house. His retort is simply to state that he enjoys doing it. THIS IS NOT HOW YOU STATE YOUR BOUNDARIES. It was passive! It was a shit test and he failed.
Finally, the older lady. The older lady is an interesting element simply because it shows something that is true: women add to the lives of men. Julianne Moore's character is significantly older than Don Jon, which is a play on how an older woman's experience can shape the mindset of a man. The TRP truth about this? 100% correct! If Don Jon doesn't want the deeper LTR commitment, then he won't go for it. I understand the post-wall position (btw, it's not the classic post-wall woman), but it ultimately doesn't pertain to this movie: a) she doesn't want children; and b) she's not looking for a supporter.
Decent enough. Some lessons in it. Overall, I would suggest it as a simplistic introduction to how one can have success with ONS, with the bolded out caveat that it takes much, much more work than you think to achieve those traits.

I think the major point with the shopping scene for the curtain rod or whatever was a perfect message: What is attractive to have is not attractive to achieve. Having a super-clean pad in this instance was something that was attractive about him. He didn't live in filth and had his shit together. But he tried to (passively, as you stated) show her a glimpse into how he manages to do that, and she wanted no part of that.
There are other similar hints of this sort of thing: She likes his fit body and compliments him on his discipline, but the way he goes about it is strange to her, and she chides him while watching him work out (so he can maintain the body she likes so much). Long story short, there are lots of these little bits which I liked so much in the movie - Some people want only to see the end result, if you're trying to keep them around, you will never be able to show them the part of you that makes that come to fruition.

The post-wall situation pertains though. Regardless of whether or not she wants women or whether she wants a supporter, she's still far removed from her prime. They're trying to highlight that this woman's "experiences" add value to his life, but the reality is, she is a defeated woman. The movie doesn't show it, but a woman at her age has limited options. Jon isn't at his prime, but he's at an age where he's likely to be more seduced by such women because he doesn't get it from girls around his age (Scarlett Johanssen)

First half of the movie:red pill. Second half of the movie: generic chick flick.
I don't know if it was because of some movie executive forcing them to change the story to appeal to more people, or the writers simply could not think of a good way to end the movie, but it really is a letdown despite having a few good moments. The alpha "learns the error of his ways" just like every womanizing male lead in Hollywood stories, implying that his life was not awesome to begin with. Plus the actress playing the older woman was over 50, thats just not even believable considering how good Jon is at getting women.
lavender711 11y ago
I think it was implied from the beginning that alpha's life was awesome, however porn turned him on more than real women. So from the beginning, the goal was to find a girl that would be better than porn. The only error he learned was that sex isn't about the physical fucking, its about the connection and a good connection means great sex. The age and looks are irrelevent

Interesting take on the film. I have not seen it myself but I've heard the opposite form other redpillers. It's certainly a movie I plan on watching down the road.
