I feel I may have accidentally put a kind of negative spin on the teachings of Alan Watts recently - that wasn’t the intention. I respect the guy as someone who was at the cutting edge of spiritual thought and practice during the 1960s. His lectures and books set the scene for grounding and growth and I would highly recommend them to anyone who is looking for answers to the ‘who am I?’ ‘what am I?’ variety of spiritual enquiries.
But within the context of the modern world, Alan would have been red pill.
I wrote a lot of philosophical shit on the subject, but I will cut to the chase and simply connect meditation with TRP goals instead:
Building power is fundamentally based on improving conscious attention and awareness;
Holding frame is the development of a discriminating mindfulness that mediates between the two. Being able to concentrate on a subject objectively while remaining aware of the situational context reduces the effect of the 5 hindrances is my definition of a strong mental frame.
The issue is that there is a big difference between holding frame during a tranquil meditation session and maintaining while jumping up and down at the rave. There is a helpful remedy: lift.
Application of meditative practice in gym work and lifting acts as a gateway. Being in a controlled environment facilitates focus of conscious attention to achieve measurable physical results- in this case, development of the body. Controlled exercising is the first step to bringing meditative practice into the real world. The goal is being able to bring all of your practice into your daily life outside the gym yet the gym, imo, acts as an important bridge between isolated meditative practice and calm in the unpredictability of the real world. I should point out that this benefit applies to sustained cardio work which also encourages focus through long periods of consistent effort.
So, going back to Alan Watts- for fun: I think he used his zen realisations to create the life that he did in the 1960’s. Today, I suspect he would have still been on the cutting edge and would swallow the red pill in the same way he swallowed LSD. I’m not saying he would have been Chad Thundercock, but I suspect we all know (or are at least starting to realise) that Chad is a bit of a superficial figure and, if he has any sense like Alan, he is fast moving on from the shagging birds chapter of what has always been a spiritual journey.

Meditation is much easier for me after lifting too.

Meditation actually helps me work efficiently while I'm in the gym. Literally no time is wasted at all.
It helps me stick strictly to the designated 1:30 rest time in between sets, sitting down and flicking through the phone even for 1 minute does not happen outside of this designated rest time. I haven't missed a single day in the gym for 4 months straight (I just started lifting 4 months ago). Each of my gym sessions have been consistently an hour long, efficiency at its finest. Any thoughts related to difficulty will slip right past when you're in a mindful state, allowing you to push past that last difficult rep.
IT goes hand in hand. You'll be more efficient in the gym with a meditation practice. And with any other aspect in life.

It is amazing how meditation helps with focus and organisation.
The interesting part is that this skill is built from the most basic exercise: realising that you mind has wandered and returning to your focus without judgement.
After practising this basic skill for only a few weeks, you find that you are noticably more able to concentrate fully for that minute and a half (even if you are battered crazy after a big squat set) and can act promptly with little frustration creeping in at all. It's fucking solid... and it's only the beginning.

Damn. I thought you were going to mention tips on meditation. But I get your point.

Them tips is not hard to find... 'The Mind Illuminated.' is a great book to start off with if you are flying solo.

I got a good tip from a monk awhile back. He said the best way to find your center during mediation is to focus on your breathing and picture yourself as a tree with your roots going into the ground. It does help get to that calming place of solitude which is so rare to find

Funnily enough, once I got there- connecting with the spacious, eternal happiness at the core of my being, I found that I could connect to it whenever I wanted to and, perversely, was happy to fail and not even try, because in the end, I was happy. This part of meditation became like a drug to me- I was addicted to pain killers!
We have all seen the image of the Vietnamese (Korean?) monk setting himself on fire and holding rock solid frame as he burnt to death. Many people seem impressed by that. I think "what a waste!". If the best thing we can do for the world is become the best version of ourselves then buring yourself to death sends a very poor long term message, even if the short term effect was becoming a buddhist rock star.
Much better to use the ultimate pain management system to test your body and achieve your goals within the limits of endurance rather than killing yourself over it. And we aren't just limiting ourselves to pain management of course, we are taliking self management in general. Big power...

Everyone should take LSD at least once in their life. It really changed my life for the better and opened my eyes to the true nature of reality. LSD is perhaps the most transformative substance on the planet. When used in conjunction with spiritual practice is can elevate consciousness to unfathomable levels.

Yeah man but who wants to trip for 12 hours straight man. Shit is not to be played with. Still awesome and definitely safe to use but damn idk if I could do another 12-14 hours straight at a certain point I just want it to end
_Cryptonaire_ 7y ago
What you took is most probably NBOM or some other research chemical that is marketed as LSD. Its not the same at all. The problem with these RC's is that the LD-50 (lethal dose) is close to the psychoactive dose which make them very dangerous.
A LSD trip should wear off within 6 hours. Get a better dealer.
sorryforthelifestory 7y ago
LSD having a 12 hourish trip is just common knowledge. Unless the front page of google and literally everyone I know who have taken lsd are wrong.
_Cryptonaire_ 7y ago
There's a big difference between 'feeling the effects' and tripping. So yeah.. they are probably all wrong. No- one peaks for 12 hours. What the other guy explained is a classic NBOM or DOx trip. 12 hours of tripping hard feeling like its never gonna end.
unclecrumble 7y ago
Fuck me man. This dude acted like he had the best shit ever and I was told that long of a trip is typical for acid but the whole thing was strange. It was not remotely fun pretty uncomfortable. Why don’t people test shit
NormalAndy 7y ago
I’d also be careful when questioning yourself why you are doing it. If it’s just for fun then I would get a better reason as well as a better dealer.
Drugs such as LSD can give you a glimpse as to the way ahead but you still have to make it on your own. There is a danger that LSD or even canabis can become a distraction rather than a help.
