I moved to a new state about 10 weeks ago. It was exciting but it kinda sucked letting go of my plates and prospects. I was starting fresh. Cold approaching with some luck. Tinder with no luck.
6 weeks in and I had no luck with dating. I hadn't had any dates or sex. Dry spell. This is when I decided to grow my facial hair. I kinda just said, "fuck it, I'm not seeing anyone so if my patchy ass facial hair looks like shit then it doesn't matter". I doubted myself because my dad had told me that he wasn't able to grow a full beard until he was 30. I'm 23. Also, one time I didn't have a razor for a few days so I couldn't shave and my manager told me to shave because I had "little bitch hairs" LOL which was true (patchiness).
So I decided to let it grow and told myself I wouldn't shave. I've invested $64 (plus tax & shipping) on trying to get my facial hair to grow and fill out. I bought a Trimmer, a Vitamin Supplement, and a Topical Solution (Minoxidil -5%).
Coincidentally after I decided to grow out my facial hair, my luck began to turn in my dating life. I went on a Tinder date a week after I let my facial hair grow and I ended up fucking on the first date for the first time (she's now a plate). More success with cold approaching and more IOI's in general. First 2 weeks I was nervous and a little self conscious about it. Whenever I was talking with someone I would feel a little nervous about what I looked like but eventually I would forget about it and interact normally. Now I feel proud and more confident about my face. I get lots of compliments from friends.
NOW, for the tips:
• Definitely DO NOT shave. You've probably heard that shaving makes your hairs thicker or whatever. It's not true. Shaving will not help you get a beard. It sounds very obvious and it should be obvious.
• Once you commit to growing out your facial hair, STICK THROUGH IT! I wanted to shave it off and give up during the first week. Only reason I didn't was because I had already bought the Vitamin Supplement and a Trimmer so I didn't want to waste that money. 2 weeks ago I visited my family in my hometown and I got another urge to shave because my mom and sister were telling me how ugly it looked (of course, they're used to seeing me a certain way with a certain look, so a big change makes their hamsters spin). Again, I just stuck through it and gave a DGAF attitude.
• Definitely invest in a Trimmer. I bought mine for $25 (link above) and it comes with different attachments for the length. Later on when you get a good length going, make sure to look up some youtube tutorial videos on how to shape and trim properly. Because new hairs are still growing in on my face, I trim my facial hair about twice a week. I maintain my hair at about 1/8" which is pretty short but I'm waiting for those new hairs to come out so I can grow it all out together, eventually..
• You don't have to invest in the Vitamin Supplement (link above), but if you currently don't take any supplements, then I would recommend it. The bottle and description say that it's supposed to help grow and thicken your hair, and it's probably true, but my hair is already a thick black so I'm not going to re-purchase this product. IMO, this product is just a multi-vitamin. Any good multi-vitamin will already help your hair grow so you don't need to get this specific one but for \~$20 it's not bad.
• The Topical Solution is probably my secret beard steroid. I started using this product only like 2 weeks ago and it's visibly WORKING. I apply it twice a day and literally every time I check my face in the mirror, I see NEW hairs growing in where it used to be patchy. My facial hair is already filling in and I'm confident that in about 1 month I'll have a full grow on my face and I'll be able to finally let it grow past the 1/8". It does get itchy so beware. IMO it's not the solution that gets itchy, but it's the new hairs pushing through your skin that causes the itch.
• Final Tip: Only do it if you're fully invested. It's not easy. It takes a lot of patience and discipline to not shave it, especially if you're patchy. If you just want to see how you look with a beard just for curiosity or if you're half-assedly trying to participate in no shave November I wouldn't even bother. You really just need to tell yourself, "I WANT a beard, and I'm GONNA have one."
Feel free to add any other tips in the comments!

I came here to find out how to grow one but forgot that I have since 10th grade.

Side note on minox... I used it for about three months with good results, but then I started to notice large dark puffy circles under my eyes. I didn't occur to me that it could be related but after some googling, turns out minox breaks down collagen. Six months later it's pretty much back to normal, but none of the benefits we're permanent.

I grew a beard because:
One of the best feelings ever is when your patience pays off and men with lesser beard vocally acknowledge that you're a bearded man.
One thing I would note is; grow it for yourself, not to impress girls. It takes a lot of maintenance and unless you're like me and get a tonne of beard grooming products for birthdays/xmas, it's going to get expensive.
theselfmadealpha 8y ago
I'd never grown a full beard until a few years ago. It was on my list of things to do before I die and I've been steadily crossing things off like crazy over the past ten years (I can proudly say that I've crossed all but one of the sexual things off the list). Anyway, I decided to grow a big, full beard a few years ago and was prepared to get very little pussy that winter. I thought that most women didn't like beards, but I couldn't have been more wrong. Imagine my surprise when I started getting even more attention from women than usual! I couldn't believe it. I'd always thought that women preferred their men clean shaven. Some do, sure, but many women LOVE a guy with a big, thick beard. I'm not saying a beard will get you pussy or anything else - just sharing my experience. I thought a beard would hold me back from getting pussy and I got more that winter than ever before!
[deleted] 8y ago
Grew my beard out for the first time last year in November for the no shave November. I generally got positive feedback.
Since then I’ve just been shaving once/twice a week. I get a full beard in 2 weeks. That’s when people started to really say oh you have a beard. I’ll definitely use this post in the future when I grow it again.
I’m 17 btw

I went the opposite direction. 2500 dollar investment in electrolysis as a Final Solution to the Facial Hair Question.
Solitary_Solidarity 8y ago
Some people like myself simply cannot grow one, nobody in either side of my family can grow a beard, I have to shave if i dont i look like a neckbeard league of legends maestro.
WhoSweg 8y ago
Go play league mate. Become a pro, it's clearly what you were destined to do.
Solitary_Solidarity 8y ago
A man makes his own destiny, besides my pc is shit. Would rather not be a neckbeard.
tinydickbigballs 8y ago
I grew a beard for a while. My hair is blonde, but while my facial hair is full and thick and I can grow a beard, it is red.
Makes me not even want to grow one at all.
CCJ22 8y ago
I want men to understand this from the OP:
-Facial hair made him feel more confident. Which, led to him getting some ass. I don't want men to read this and say facial hair is the reason he got some ass.
Do what makes you feel confident
tempolaca 8y ago
I have a perfect full beard but I hate it. I shave it off.
But I have a bald spot and I don't like it. I did a hair transplant, arguably it makes very little difference but I feel 500% better for it. I could have spent that money in a shrink but I prefer it this way.
> It takes a lot of patience and discipline to not shave it,
Come on man, seriously. You need discipline to not shave your beard?
BTW, you cannot grow hairs with a topical solution. Either you have them or you don't.

As a dude with a pretty heavy beard, you're better off just lifting
dankmemem88 8y ago
Lifted for several years and have higher than average T. Still a neckbeard.

[deleted] 8y ago
Definitely. Aside from cutting down to 12% BF, the beard is the number one thing that has improved my facial aesthetics the most. I have a weak lower third, almost a recessed chin and the beard hides this completely from all angles. It makes my lower third look so much more dymorphic and gives a better overall facial harmony to my face. Beards are great
[deleted] 8y ago
I'm like Jon Snow, not the same without a beard. Haven't seen my face clean shaven in probably 3 years.
Peter_B_Long 8y ago
Similar here. I have a longish face and not a sharp jaw. IMO if you don't have good face aesthetics, growing a beard can increase your SMV but a whole point probably. If you have a "pretty" face, being cleanly shaven may work for you.
ReadyPlayer15 8y ago
I'm 16 and have kinda wondered about this. I have great eyes and have been called "cute" and "pretty"y girls, but I have a weak chin and not a very strong jaw. I can't grow a bread currently but when I can should I try, even if I kinda have a "pretty boy " thing going
P4_Brotagonist 8y ago
As someone who was relentlessly called "cute" and "baby faced," maximize that shit. Chicks flocked the boy bands and rarely did they have massive manly faces. It's the package of being extremely fit and confident. Obviously if you are a burly ass man with body hair and a weathered face, beard is a different great asset to that type of man.
ReadyPlayer15 8y ago
Thank you. I've recently lost alot of weight and I'm now starting to work out. So im excited to see what will come

Chew bubblegum and lift weights.
WhoSweg 8y ago
Does gum actually work? I used to chew like all day every day when I was at school and have almost "muscles" on the edge of my jaw that sometimes sticks out.
that because of chewing gum?
Pestilence1911 8y ago
Yeah i have those too. Thats the only way i know how to build muscle in your jaw.
Then again i have a soft chin too, but always rock a beard,
306westernfront 8y ago
Barber here. I always tell clients that have a "patchy" beard. It takes 4 months to grow. No matter what, don't fucking touch it. No line ups. No neck trims, nothing. 4 months in you should have a higher beard line and a fuller looking beard.
Also, a big beard often comes from under the chin/neck (not to be confused with a greasy ass neck beard) Layered down from the face.
If you are growing a beard consult a reputable barber, as you should be with your hair already.
We learn in school that trimming hair does not make individual hairs grow thicker. I have found this to be untrue. A hair is shaped like a triangle. When it is trimmed, the base (thickest part) becomes the tip, it now has a thicker base. Continuing the cycle. Of course it is minuscule but you can test it on yourself. My barber checked my eye brows. Trimmed only my left one, time and time again trimmed my left one while barely touching my right side. It is now thicker, fuller and after a year or two it grows way faster than my right side. It has been a real shit trying to get my right side to catch up.
FeelTheBernieSanderz 8y ago
4 months of looking like a fool compared to an assured suave, shaven look.
I couldn't care less about plates opinion but at work meeting with clients, need to look my best.
Would need to go NEET to see a full beard.... Those days are gone sadly!
P4_Brotagonist 8y ago
I'm curious about your post. I have "patchy" facial hair but it does grow fuller. However, some of it grows at 5x the rates of the other hair. How the hell do i let it go for 4 months while having some hairs 2-3 inches long and some hair 1/4th of an inch without looking like I just came out of a fucking D&D meeting?
[deleted] 8y ago
Do you think almost any guy can grow a beard eventually? I've never let my facial hair grow for more than two weeks because I feel like it really looks shitty and there's no hope for a beard.
[deleted] 8y ago
I feel like this a very sneaky troll trying to get us to shave our eyebrows. First of all, what fucking barber is trimming their eyebrows? Not even a no. 1 on a beard trimmer is that short. I call bullshit unless you have big ass eyebrows.
306westernfront 8y ago
What kind of barber doesnt ask guys if they want their eye brows trimmed? (Client specific) Especially older gents. Their eye brow hair can get to be inches long.
[deleted] 8y ago
Shit fair enough, I have perfect eyebrows

Minoxidil is godsend for facial hair.
Expect to stay on for at least a year and use the foam version for minimal side effects. Start off really slow (1 dose every other day) to let your body and skin get used to the drug then work your way up to 1-2 times a day.
Edit: Not great to put on before a date smells like shit.
Entropy-7 8y ago
Personally, I sport a van dyke (aka "goatee" for the uninitiated) because it balances out my shaved dome. I did it pre-shave and I liked it because it got responses from women, and the most simple explanation is the "bad boy" factor.
The thing is, various studies have shown that women like men with "stubble". Remeber that what women say is bullshit and what only matter is what they do. I agree based on my personal experiences and by simply Googling "beard of awesome"
[deleted] 8y ago
Also google beard jelly and get that to moisturize so it doesn’t itch.
A lot better then normal beard oil.
Terdmuffin 8y ago
Beard balm works really well too to avoid itch and help style. I make my own but Cremo males really good beard balm.

Chicks that like beards LOOOVE beards.
Chicks with no opinion, still like them
Chicks that don't like them, who cares
JariFreyr 8y ago
How long does it take until it looks good ?
Peter_B_Long 8y ago
It varies. IMO once you do that first trim, that's when it'll start looking good.
officerkondo 8y ago
If you want to give tips about growing a beard, the first step is to grow a beard yourself. Don't worry about the other follicles that are coming in. Let it grow.
Moving on, a point that was not addressed: most guys' shitty, too-high necklines. Being bearded, I tend to notice other beards in public and the majority of men have their necklines too damn high. I know they think it is making their jawlines look chiseled, but all anyone else can see is that flabby, naked skin waggling under your jaw.
The other side of too-high necklines is too-low cheek-lines. My genetics allow me to leave my cheek-line natural but I see a lot of guys with cheek-lines that are way too low. This usually gives the appearance of jowls. See, e.g., Kevin Smith.
Peter_B_Long 8y ago
I guess my tips are more on how to START growing a beard.
I did some research on the neck thing and I agree. You only want to shave like below your adams apple.
officerkondo 8y ago
Good thinking. Maybe I'll sprout some seeds for a few days and make a post, "Tips on Growing Tomatoes".
The general guideline is 1-2 finger's width above the Adam's apple.
If you really want my advice, you grow a beard by not shaving for 30 days. Don't trim it, don't shape it, don't fuck with it. Then, go to a barber who knows what he's doing and have him put in your neckline.
goriladevainilla 8y ago
It drives me nuts to see both of those on people. Too low cheek lines just looks outright gay. Too high neck line shaved up to the jaw looks retarded, and if they attempt to grow any length at all it doesn't have any thickness.
[deleted]
Rudeyyyy 8y ago
Can you give me advice for the cheek lines? I'm only 20 and I can definitely grow a solid goatee easily. That's where it's the most thick. I can grow up my cheeklines too but it's not much even though it does get thick. I'm talking about the height of it. Like it's not far up my cheek.
officerkondo 8y ago
My advice is always to let the beard grow for 30 days without doing anything to it. No trimming or shaping of any kind. Then, go to a barber who knows how to style beards and have him put in your neckline and cheek line.
Most guys think that because they can see their beards, they should maintain their beards. This is a mistake. Treat it like the hair on your head (of which I have none). I have a standing appointment with my barber every two weeks.
Rudeyyyy 8y ago
Appreciate the advice. I noticed that it grows higher on one side of my face than the other. Also that side is more "full" if you want to call it that. I'm by no means patchy at all. Just one cheek is slightly higher and fuller than the other. In highschool I went around 2 months without shaving because when you're on a winning streak you don't shave. Besides the point It filled in decently but not to where it was admirable. But I guess because I was 17 at the time. I'm 20 now and i've always kept it light stubble/really short for work. Is it possible that the rest of the cheek lines will fill in as I get older??
officerkondo 8y ago
Oh yes. I never tried growing a beard for more than a few weeks or so until after I was 40. If memory serves, when I was younger, my beard did not grow as high up on my face as it does now. Today, I have a pretty decent natural cheek line. Everyone is different but a lot of guys seems to be able to grow a stronger beard as they grow older.
Also, don't let those issues of varying growth stop you from growing it. More follicles will become active over time, and your whiskers will fill out weaker spots as they grow longer.
Rudeyyyy 8y ago
Why do you think this is? I’ve heard it before that it will fill out and get thicker but if it’s thick now then will it get even more full? I’m just wondering because I started puberty at an early age and you can see some shadow and hairs when I was in the 7th grade. Now I’m a sophomore in college and I can definitely grow a respectable one but the cheek lines are low. My friend started late and he can only grow a little soul patch and side burns nothing else. Unless it’s genetics.
Because I’m getting older and more testosterone??

(The OP mentioned 5% Minoxodil, which is the generic name of Rogaine.)
denisgomesfranco 8y ago
Oh my... this means I'm f***ed as hell...
Peter_B_Long 8y ago
Rogaine is exactly the same as the product I bought but just name brand. I agree about the genetics thing. My grandpa and my uncles from my mom's side can grow beards and my dad can grow a full beard so I'm not worried, I just need that "help" like you mentioned. Thanks for the input!

Too bad hipsters ruined beards
Pestilence1911 8y ago
Grow a gotee for a month before you grow a full beard. Gives it a point and better form.
Treseme hair conditioner in your beard too after it gets longer.

Lmao. Try it out and see how you feel
Rudeyyyy 8y ago
One more thing to add. DO NOT grow the thin mustache to chinstrap combo. It looks like absolute shit. It's a pencil beard and looks disgusting. Either grow it out up the cheek and let it fill in the neck or don't grow it at all. This screams rapist or edgy teen trying to grow something but can't. Grow it out and keep it clean or don't grow it at all. None of this half assed shit.
It looks like this:

Folks, if you've never grown a beard, just give it a shot. Give it 6 weeks, leave it be. After that you can give it a trim and see what you have to work with. Then maybe give it a bit longer so see if any patches of slow-growing hair fill in.
Peter_B_Long 8y ago
This is pretty much a TLDR for my post. I suggest giving yourself a time frame for sure for how long you're NOT gonna shave for. 6 weeks - 3 months is a good goal.
cenie 8y ago
Eh, when I first started growing my beard I would shave it when it got too long, and itchy, and the patches really showed. Now it grows in nice and full. You don't need supplements or any of that crap to grow a beard. You either can or you can't.
Now that said; Please don't be one of those wanks who wears a shitty beard. It looks bad. I don't care how confident you think you are, it LOOKS BAD. It's kind of cringe actually.
Peter_B_Long 8y ago
Time can definitely affect how your beard grows. Like I said, my dad said he didn't grow a full beard until he was 30.
MisterRoid 8y ago
I have commited to growing a full beard since February. It's still patchy, but it's getting better and better. You need to have patience and be willing to stand others' bitching about it. I'm not going to touch it at all until I have let it grow undisturbed for a year
Peter_B_Long 8y ago
That's great man. IMO it's okay to trim it. Let the other hairs catch up. It will help get rid of the patchiness.
HyperSensitiveSigma 8y ago
If I've been watching too much Game of Thrones I grow a 2-3 day stubble goatee or chinstrap. I read chinstraps are supposed to be for kids and nu-metal bands but they work for me. A beard has to be well-groomed or it'll repel women. I shave my neck twice and make sure there are no stray hairs anywhere.
peaceful_strong_man 8y ago

...or look up minoxidil. Has some side effects tho.
xavine 8y ago
Sadly I was one of those. I recently shaved my head so wanted a beard to go with it, but I definitely noticed a difference. I felt insanely lethargic, sleepy and had headaches whenever I'd apply it. It's a shame because I've seen some great results on it.
VirginPlaya 8y ago
Minox defo works. It takes time though. Up to 4-6 months.
[deleted] 8y ago
Expect to stay on way longer than 6 months.
If you want to get the best results you should stay on for at least a year. I'm roughly 8 months in using the foam and only now reach that impressive facial hair point. I'm probably going to stay on for a full year and a half though (maybe 2 years) just to see how far I can push it.
Ill_Will7 1 8y ago
Tips on growing a beard?? the fuck? Either you can grow one or you cant. If i dont shave for a month i look homeless. Keep it trimmed if you got one, If not who gives a fuck. This is a really gay post
TheLegend1312 8y ago
beard oil is the key, everyday and even before bed. straightens the hair and softens it makes it shiny. i have random girls approach me to pet it play with it etc.
[deleted] 8y ago
Would you recommend the topical solution to a teen?
Peter_B_Long 8y ago
probably not. Look up the solution online and see if you can find a review or FAQ about using the product at your age.
apatel215 8y ago
I feel like facial hair is not talked/emphasized enough....BITCHES LOVE BEARDS!!! Keep it cleanly shaped (eyebrows included) and i guarantee you'll turn heads. I started shaping mine up myself with a straight razor, mainly out of pickiness with my facial hair but it'll also save a few bucks per trip to the barber for it. especially with these inflated ass haircut prices
GuitarHero07 8y ago
It’s a niche thing. Some girls love beards and others don’t. I can grow a very thick beard and I’ve had very mixed reactions about it from girls. My girlfriends have been mostly indifferent. Some girls hated it and others thought I looked better with it.
Personally, I think it all depends on the look you are trying to present. You’ll notice that most people in the world of business and politics are clean shaven. So if you’re going with a more clean-cut/professional/classy look, it’s probably best to be clean shaven. If you’re looking for a more rugged/edgy look, the beard can certainly help.
There is also a racial dynamic to it as well. Brown men with beards in America might have more negative associations because most jihadist terrorists are bearded brown men.
P4_Brotagonist 8y ago
I don't honestly think it's niche. The reason I say this is because I have constantly heard women say "Oh I thought I wasn't a beard girl but then I met/saw X and now I find them really sexy!" Obviously there are things that women like(muscular low BF and the like) but things like beard are more about the man feeling confident and the woman likes it BECAUSE she finds the guy attractive.
[deleted] 8y ago
[deleted]
apatel215 8y ago
Yea you're right it does depend on the girls. i dont think the age really matters at least in my experience and maybe location too (northeast America) its like a thing that girls love beards. Maybe i only notice the girls that show interest in the beard and dont even pay attention to those that dont idk. Again just from my experience beards work. And i feel you bro, Im brown too but i keep to myself im not really a part of that crowd so i think that just makes me stand out by default
Peter_B_Long 8y ago
exactly. I can't wait until I have too much hair and I can start trimming it and shaping it.
apatel215 8y ago
personally i dont grow mine out i just keep it on my cheeks but thats just what i think looks best for me. Its great tho, my group of friends cant grow facial hair for shit so its nice to have that 1up lol
Peter_B_Long 8y ago
for sure. it's whatever works for you. I mean there's dudes who look good with just a mustache. I recommend trying different looks and not stick to the first one you try.
All my friends are older so they all have facial hair or they have that 5 oclock shadow.
CCJ22 8y ago
I shave every 3 days. Still get girls. Gotta do whatever makes you feel more confident. When you feel confident, your whole frame changes for the better.
apatel215 8y ago
wym? like you dont keep your facial hair at all? definitely do whatever works for you but if you (generally speaking) can grow facial hair id recommend it as again...bitches love beards
CCJ22 8y ago
Yes sir, I shave every 3 days so I don't keep any facial hair.
boolNation 8y ago
I'm 16 right now, is it possible doing this now will make me unable to grow a beard naturally?
[deleted] 8y ago
do not do it. Don't fuck with health risks at a young age.
Peter_B_Long 8y ago
I wouldn't recommend it. Look up the product and search for reviews or FAQ about using the product at your age. If I were you though I would just let grow what I can and just trim it and see how much hair you can grow.
wayneinthegame 8y ago
You lose the new hairs when you stop using it.
IWasBornASinner 8y ago
Why'd you move to a new state ? I've been thinking of moving to a new city for a change of scenery but I'm going to move out of where i'm living now regardless. what do you recommend ?
Peter_B_Long 8y ago
Depends on what you're looking for your lifestyle. For me, I wanted to move somewhere where rent was cheaper. I wanted to move in with people who I can learn from (sort of like mentors) but who also like to have fun. My roommates are the best wingmen I've ever had. I live with a couple and they're both very attractive. When I go out, I get good social points for being close to them. They're very fun and social so when we go out, they're often the center of attention and me just being around them has lots of eyes on me. My roommate is very attractive. Great smile, blue eyes, tattoos with a gothic dress style. Nice ass and big tits. Every girl I bring over or meets her comments on how beautiful she is and I can tell they're jealous or worried that I live under the same roof.
I recommend moving in with people you can really get along with and they add value to your life. Be picky. Take time to find options. I recommend just doing it and try not to have any attachments in your life. It's easy to move around when you don't have much holding you back. Let me know if you have more specific questions.

Minoxodil is pretty straightforward. There is no research or studies that have proven that exposure to minoxidil will create impotency.
