Every so often we get requests from people to do a survey on this sub. We universally decline these requests, but most of them are good actors in at least they ask permission and then honor our wishes. Sometimes I point out that I’m doing them a favor, since this is about the last place you want to do a survey—admit it, most of us would give random answers just to troll them. Shitty surveys amount to shitty science, and we all know that surveys themselves are already the ghetto of science.
Now this assumes we are dealing with good actors. Rest assured there is an army of people that would go to great lengths to do whatever they can to make each and every one of us personally miserable. Therefore we have to assume any attempt to collect personal data, even seemingly anonymous data, is an attempt to dox us. So good science or bad science or good intentions or bad intentions, all surveys are banned from the sub. No exceptions.
Now this leads us to our current problem with vermin. There is someone claiming to be from UCSB doing a survey about the people of TRP. Are they? Don’t care. They know very well we will refuse their request and ban their account, so they have taken to PMing people directly. They have been using multiple accounts (which I will be discussing with the admins).
We strongly recommend you completely ignore these PMs. Do not even click the link to see where it takes you. The links themselves are all uniquely identifiable. At a bare minimum you are associating your username with an IP to someone outside of reddit. This itself may be relatively benign, but every dox’ing starts with a seed of information. Don’t give it to them.

Its funny how it’s so obvious what they’re trying to do just from reading the questions.
We can also tell how ridiculously unscientific these people are. The pre-written conclusion of this paper is that red pill is bad, and these guys like red pill because they had x, y, and z bad things happen. So they will go through the data and look for correlations. Of course no attention will be paid to causality, they will simply find the correlations and call it a day. They will also ignore all of the endogeneity and other statistical issues. Just a straight up linear regression.
Bullied in school... no
Eats a lot of red meat... no
Played violent video games... no
Politically conservative... yes! Throw it in.
White... no
Short... no
Majored in stem... yes! Throw it in.
“We therefore conclude that conservatives and STEM grads are highly susceptible to TRP. Steps should be taken to ensure that conservatives and STEM grads are protected from online hate speech.”
Crank out a few more absurd papers like that, get tenure, relax.

Exactly. I’ve posted about this before. No one has time to know everything, so we rely on experts. This requires trust though, and I obviously do not trust left wing social scientists. It’s really that simple. If they say the sun rises in the east I will look west just to be sure.

Did they show you official documentation, like an informed consent form on University letterhead?

I was just asking because because I think it’s perfectly fine to do surveys for legitimate academic research at a University. Media journalists, however, are far less likely to exercise rigor and restraint.
Snazzy_Serval 7y ago
I took the survey as well. I didn't know about the Redpill policy of not participating.
That said, the link the survey went to is a ucsb.edu domain. Meaning it was part of UC Santa Barbara.
Got my gold too. First time I've ever had gold.
Flintblood 7y ago
That was legit. I’m surprise more of us aren’t interested in research on TRP.

Honestly I think this approach won’t yield the best results. And if we don’t fill in the blank’s for them they just might draw their own conclusions and do that for us. If anything, we want to make sure that we control the message.
Instead, the best way forward might be to say yes to a couple surveys provided the person prove who they say they are. They show legitimacy by showing a scan of IRB proposal on official letterhead that shows the name of their study and the intent of their data collection method.
We would also need to make sure that everyone who responds takes the survey seriously, and that the researcher properly vets responses to rule out trolling.

Dude they aren’t interested in finding the truth. They already have an answer. Now they just need the data to support it. One day you’ll wake up. These are the enemy.

Two things that will never happen. They hold the bullhorn, so our message is irrelevant. And try to make this crew take something seriously? Whew. I got some greek stables for you to clean too.

Even the seemingly benign ones could.just be a setup for a hit piece.
Michael Savage told a story about a guy he let spend a few days with him, then the guy just blasted him in the article he's eventually wrote.
Same thing happened to Jordan Peterson in the NYT recently.

Thanks! It's a good reminder that this place is constantly under siege by entryist's attempting to bring the users & this place down.

My first thought, when I see a survey request, is that they want to use the data to prove we're all misogynistic monsters who wanna see the world burn.

But I'm a baby eating atheist... I suppose it's still a problem since I'm vehemently anti Marxist despite not believing in sky daddies and I don't wish to treat girls like strong, independent, capable, helpless, victims.

There are plenty of people that do this stuff for good purposes. It's just unfortunate that there are so many that hide their political and sociological agendas behind a a fake aura of authority.
