I will preface this post by saying that my observations may not be typical of any university, in this country or indeed worldwide, however there may be parallels between this report and your own experiences in similar situations or institutions.
Firstly, a little background. I've been a member of TRP for many years now, although this is only my second post using this account in over 2 years. I have recently completed a Masters in Mechanical Engineering, and I have often found myself in the University library at all times of day when completing work, due to societies and other social activities. The library in question is aimed at the female-dominated courses, such as criminology, psychology etc. There is another library for STEM subjects, but this one is closer to where I live, and so I go there. During my time in learning about the various topics and components of TRP theory, I have been able to observe many behaviours of people that otherwise I would not have paid attention to. This report will summarise the findings I have observed over the past few years. Firstly I will take you through an average day.
Ideally, I aim to be seated and working at 9am most days, firstly to ensure I get a place to sit, and also to get a lot done before lots of people arrive and ruin the peace and quiet. At this time in the morning, the library is quiet, with very few people in. There tends to be more men in at this time, with roughly a 70-30 split, however all people are working quietly and there is minimal distraction.
This quiet-time lasts for most of the morning, with a slow trickle of people arriving constantly up to around noon. In this time, the majority of arrivals are still men, sometimes in small groups of 3-4. Sometimes these people put on a sports game while they work, but they still work and are mostly focused. Of the women that are present, they still continue to work, but spend some time looking round the room at men they find attractive, especially when they get up to use the toilet. Men seem to do this too, but with less frequency.
After noon, it really starts to pick up, with larger groups of girls coming all at once and taking lots of seats together. Some men are also arriving but they tend to be alone, or with one other person. The groups of girls are often a lot louder, and bring lots of food with them to have through the afternoon. Whilst the men generally work, however with small distractions from a sports game or their phone, the women, especially the groups of girls tend to get no work done at all. There is always lots of gossiping and general chat between them, more often than not they have open an online clothes shop or Tinder and browse it with their friends. Even the girls who are sat alone have online shopping open, and they are browsing for a long period of time. In all this time, women who are alone still look around at everyone around them, to size up the men and to judge other women. The groups of women also do this, however they also whisper to their friends at the same time. It should come as little surprise to most people here that this is the case. The men who arrived alone still continuously work, with little/no distractions, however the men who are in slightly larger groups tend to drift off and talk about unrelated subjects for a short while before returning to work. They generally are not interested in looking at the women around, which I found surprising, I never overheard any chatter between them about any attractive women in the vicinity. I also never observed men using Tinder in the library, but that does not mean it doesn't happen. Furthermore, groups of men who come together will not always go together to get food, one or two may leave at a time, instead of the whole group.
The afternoon continues on a similar trend, with men working alone or in small groups, and the women spending less and less time working, especially in large groups. The larger groups often tend to get coffee or food all together at multiple parts of the day, sometimes going 2-3 times per hour. When it reaches around 6pm a lot of the women start to leave, mostly the large groups who arrived in the early afternoon. I often overhear the women expressing how tired they are despite doing little work. Some of the men who have been around since 9am also start to leave, with the groups of men staying, but getting more distracted. The women who arrived alone also tend to leave around this time.
At late evening, the library is 80-20 men, who still work quietly. The remaining women at this point have come alone, as they will never stay behind while their group leaves, and tend to work effectively and without distraction. At this point it is unsurprising that this is the case, as the library is sparse.
Overall, in the past few years there has been a large increase in the number of students at the university, and so larger groups of women tend to come in earlier, but with the same results in terms of work rate. Women can't escape their group-think mentality, and always must do things with the entire group, where men are happy to go alone. In addition, men tend to have a higher work rate and work longer than women on average.
TLDR: Men often work alone, or in small groups with a higher work rate and longer hours. Women who come alone work well in the morning, but drift into online shopping and Tinder in the afternoon, and large groups of women get little/no work done at all during the day and waste lots of time gossiping, going for coffee and using Tinder.
This is a typical day for the library that I have witnessed over the past few years, and I am keen to hear your experiences too.

The worst is what happened to me quite often back in the day...you get there, start working, a few hours later you are rudely interrupted by some girl that she requires your seat because "there aren't any others near my friends" because her group decided to sit next to you for their afternoon of gossiping, back stabbing and judgement. Being BP back then I would pack up and move, only for it to happen 3-4x a day and eventually I would have nowhere to work whilst these groups of women use the space like a coffee shop.
The problem is, if you say no, if you refuse to move, there's the undercurrent, unspoken threat of reports of harrasment. She goes to staff, says you make crude comment. That's instant suspension in British universities.
Males have the unspoken undercurrent of violence if words cannot solve a problem. Females have the unspoken undercurrent of false allegations.
This stuff is so insane crazy you think people make it up but it DOES happen.

Why is it that whenever someone’s eating during a lecture it’s nearly always a woman? Has anyone else noticed this?
Gulpandchoke 8y ago
Interested to know more stats about this uni. Population, male and female pop of the courses the libe is aimed at, etc. The one library at my uni was very 50-50 on average, can't speak for groups

I just read the entire post and all I can say is that every ounce of English that you shared was nothing but the truth. I'm a mechanical engineering student as well and I cannot agree more with this post. Finding a quiet place away is half the battle.

Women who go early in the morning and get a small bit done do so to justify their non productive behaviour later on in the day by saying "I spent my morning studying, I have to enjoy myself too"
JackGetsIt 8y ago
This applies to a lot of other areas as well. If women want something they make up excuses to make themselves feel good about having it.
Men do this too but it seems like they aren't as easily wired to deceive themselves.

Just the TL;DR alone is enough to shove the gender-paygap-hypocrisy up their asses. Is see the same a work every day, and everyone I talk confirms it as well. If they intended to do so or not.
irregularpioneer 8y ago
Regular user of university libraries in the UK. Can confirm.
[deleted] 8y ago
18 year old from the UK, can also confirm.

I usually go to the library around 8:00 so that by 10:00, when noisy sluts come in shouting about their own business, I've already done something in peace. A great trick is to have lunch early, so that by the time you come back the people that do nothing are leaving for their 90 minutes lunch to get some extra silence.

I noticed this in the corporate world as well.
Women insisted on sitting in conference rooms while they did nothing but chatter, gossip, bitch and complain about nothing useful and got very little done.
It was irritating, especially when you have actual work to complete and we could have all got it done early if people just did their work.
But that's I guess what makes the corporate world rife with "toxic masculinity" and unkind to the female "way of learning"
Open seating has to be a feminist initiative -- most people that got any real work done were the people that hit their nose to the grindstone at a desk...alone! But of course that makes you "not a team player" in this environment.
Don't even get me started on Starbucks.
odaklanan_insan 8y ago
That is how women practice the art of "looking busy". In the corporate world nowadays , your supervisor or manager evaluates you over how busy you look than how many tasks you have accomplished.
Women know this and they start practicing this in libraries during the student years.
xx-Rain_Maker-xx 8y ago
Hey this is an interesting post. You are good observer.
dinnerwithfunions 8y ago
I’m at an art & design college. Sounds very similar. Though most of the students don’t even USE the library. When I see women there it’s usually the Asian women who actually GAF about their studies.
In the studio, women almost always are gossiping or talking too much and barely get work done (and when it does get done it’s best mediocre on a cold day in hell). Sometimes they play loud music and act like you’re being a jerk when you tell them to use headphones keep it low or turn it off (studio policy so they can’t do shit about it). The classes here have seriously degenerated in quality to play to the rich white girls whose parents fund the institute and will stop if they fail their precious daughter. Also meritocracy has taken a hit as they are nearly always rewarded the same grade as their colleague who puts in 5x more work. It’s essentially dwindled to a day care for privileged adult children.
There’s some good profs and if you actually want to be here your skills will grow and you’ll get a job (top art school with good networking connections) but it’s essentially degenerated to another for profit degree factory. Its “prestige” is long gone IMO.
Don’t even get me started on the feminist profs who rig juried contests so they can parade a little brown girl around whose work isn’t good like their success puppet to keep their diversity mask on.

Yeah, at my university the girls go to the library in groups and do nothing but giggle and gossip. Come 2 o'clock, they all start going home after their 'full day' of studying. In fact, I remember a couple girls asking me if I wanted to go 'study' with them. I thought yeah cool, alright. When we got there, they would not stop talking to me, even though I had earphones in. I was glad when they left.
pineapple_wizard24 8y ago
Holy fuck yes. If a girl comes and "studies" with me, I'm at the library 2 hours longer than usual because she doesn't do work and runs her mouth
calicotrinket 8y ago
Yes, I despise studying with girls this way - they'll usually suggest studying at a place not in the library, often a Starbucks as well.
[deleted] 8y ago
This sounds exactly like MY university library, yeah.

Too many women go to college.

Currently in grad school doing final exams. I'm a bit of a soloist, so I just study in my room. Come to find out a there are groups of people at the library and other parts of the campus in study groups as they cite that it helps understand the material better. I believe this to a degree for some people, when I tried some of these groups, there was more general chit-chat vs. actually getting much done, so I just went back to staying in my room. And it clicked with me that it was mostly women who mention things like, "Oh, I just can't sit in my room by myself / I need to be around and hear other people".
MarcosDomingues 8y ago
Women often find themselves more unmotivated to study and have better grades than men because they don't know why they chose their degrees in the first place, and they always have the option to marry up and be stay-at-home moms.

Frequent university library go-er in Australia. You’ve nailed it mate
WhiteGhosts 8y ago
In the Dutch Uni library I go to women tend to play with their phones rather than talk. Some of them for hours...
Zachar1a 8y ago
How do you account for the fact that women tend to make better grades than men do, on average?
mathisreal 8y ago
If you would adjust grades based on the difficulty of the degree, I think the grade gap between men and women would close real quick.
ADeadDawg 8y ago
exactly. getting good grades in STEM vs getting good grades in Fine Arts

https://www.theatlantic.com/education/archive/2014/09/why-girls-get-better-grades-than-boys-do/380318/
Girls social compliance, gives them an advantage in teacher assigned grades. While boys can test higher, demonstrating a higher level of mastery.
Essentially, the school system is designed to reward compliance and etiquette, while discouraging the competitive environment that would better nurture boys.
Zachar1a 8y ago
Thanks for answering my question!
Mrganack 8y ago
They don't at the highest level.
I come from France where i went through the infamous 2 years of "CPGE" after highschool.
We worked all the time (70h/w), there were 1 math and/or 1 physics project a week and at least 1 exam a week and there always was an up to date ranking of students on the wall.
There were 7 girls in my 48 ppl class. Everyone was trying to get in the top 15 to have a shot for the * program the next year. Only a single girl made it. Not a single girl was in the top 10 for the entire year.
In the * class there was only 1 girl left and she got one of the lowest ranks of the class at the national exams at the end.
That girl always had better grades than everyone in highschool but she had to work for them, and when we were all working a lot a large difference appeared.
This pattern was the same in all other places and as long as teachers can remember it never happened that a girl was first ("major").
The fact is that stats based on highschool grades cannot discriminate between brilliant but lazy students and average hard working students.
At the highest level men are over-represented.
calicotrinket 8y ago
Well said mate, apart from one thing - It's not very fair to say males are "overrepresented" at the highest level, as it would imply there shouldn't be as many males at the highest level.
In Asia some females actually care about their grades, but in the UK this generally holds true too.
Mrganack 8y ago
It's not about caring.
The women i talked about cared about their grades. There was 0 gender stereotype involved. Everyone enrolled wanted to make the best out of these years of sacrifice.
Yet when it comes to mind power there is no gender parity among the strongest.
[deleted] 8y ago
Women belong in nursing schools or as secretaries.
I remember in my university library, they were nothing but distractions.
calicotrinket 8y ago
They are just a source of idiotic giggling, teasing the guys who're daft enough to study with them, and sometimes even pointing towards a "hot male" or something their attention span turned them towards. One upside is them being all gone by dinner time, so I can sort an early dinner and arrive in the library with seats after class.
There are certain libraries I go to as their demographic is significantly more focused on their work, ie. alone girls, alone/small groups of males.
comcain 8y ago
Nicely written post, good observations.
I have an irrational deep hatred for people who tawktawktawk in libraries, I was always taught they should be a quiet place. I tended to stay in my room alone to really study.
But then I'm not a girl. I dont have a built-in need to talk about things in order to process them.

If you have to study for anything other than a science or math related major in undergrad, you’re retarded.
