All people have problems. Just ask random people about their issues. Everyone has them. Health, career, relationship. But you think you are special. No struggle for special snowflake #521. Buhuhu. You will surely complain about many things. Going to the gym? Planning and cooking your meals? Approaching girls on the day? Reaching your new sales quota? Finding your purpose?
The struggle is real. So many people need motivational or positivity to keep them going. Don’t get me wrong. I love Gary V’s positivity shit. I can also relate to many spiritual and mediation philosophies. But the new age and positivity / motivational industry just lies to you the same as your average politician.
THE STRUGGLE WONT END. You can’t be happy all the time. Just the truth.
There is no light without shadow. That’s the deal. You have to accept to go sometimes through hard times.
What really changed my life was to accept negativity. In fact if you can do that, you integrate your shadow parts (C. Jung). By accepting your own “bad” feelings, moments and struggles you automatically save energy. Why? You need energy to fight negativity. You need to form a new mask to “be happy”.
Did you ever try to get into state in a club? Maybe because you thought that only a hyper charismatic, positive guy is able to pickup girls in a club. There is no way to pickup girls depressed, tired or in a shitty mood. That’s wrong.
Accept your negativity. Be authentic. Accept your struggles. Accept the roller-coaster ride. You will have to go down eventually. Anything else is coping. Alcohol, drugs, social media, porn, fast food. Everything to numb your pain, struggle and negativity. Try another way. Accept the struggle and become limitless.
Lesson learned: Fuck motivational and new age positivism. Accept negativity and negative feelings. Save energy and master new, bigger challenges faster.

I'm with you my guy, I have believed in "bad shit happens to even the best of us, what matters is how you react to it". A few years ago my dad's company was about to go bankrupt, emphasizing "about to go". Him and mom had a falling and he moved to another city but you can do so much managing a company from far away.
I'm 100% sure if he gave up and declared bankruptcy I wouldn't be here blowing money on retarded shit, just like they wouldn't be putting up the new paintings they got from the auction a few nights ago. If he didn't apply himself 200% or whatever shit would have bee way, way different. Instead he pushed through and now business is better than ever.

I'd sort of want to rephrase the word negativity with "reality" but for the sake of making the point - negativity may be better term here.
killer15356 8y ago
When people say be positive it doesn’t mean to take negative emotions and turn them positive blindly it means to understand the negative but look at the bright side. You gotta know when to use the positivity don’t let it blind you from the truth and push you from your goals. If I break my arm it doesn’t mean I’m gonna ignore the fact that I broke my arm. I’m just gonna say at least “I’m not paralyzed”. Look at your blessings that’s all it means. Another example: being overweight. Don’t tell yourself “I’m not that fat”. Tell yourself “I’m fat but I will lose weight” and put in the work. Positivity has saved my life hope it saves yours.

"One does not become enlightened by imagining figures of light, but by making the darkness conscious.” -C. Jung
I was literally thinking this while driving home last night. Even in Trump's book ART OF THE DEAL (don't pull this political bullshit, this 30 year old book is a gem) he talks about NEGATIVE thinking being an asset, because you ACCEPT THE WORST. Once you accept the worst, you're actually more empowered to take risks with an IDGAF attitude.
Too much blind positivity makes you gloss over important elements in problems that could actually get you further. It also makes you SUPER LAZY because you get complacent and feel "fine" with where you are. This is a disaster.
I've always said accept the worst, go in neutral, don't over-invest in outcome, and you'll probably do fantastic.

A lifetime of experience has taught me that optimism is one of the three pillars of success, with the other two being tenacity and discipline.

As men, if we have emotions, it means there is either something to think about, figure out, fix. This applies to happiness as well sadness and even grief.

The grown-man version of 'positivity' = fortitude. Valour.
Always be bigger than your task. Always be bigger than your task = Valour = the choice and willingness to confront agony, pain, danger, uncertainty, or intimidation = Never be Overwhelmed whatsoever, much less to the point that your Insight and your Virtues are affected.
You also have a spectrum of world-views;
(<-my life sucks --- I'm great and everyone else sucks -- we're a great team operating in successful synergy -- I'm GOD and fail-proof like the RMS TITANIC->)
The aim in the spectrum is to hold a rational frame.
That's not to say that '#POSITIVITY' isn't itself a great brand to associate with socially. It is.
BeATrumpet 8y ago
Absolutely. This is being real with yourself and your circumstances.
mojavelover 8y ago
Motivational New Age Positivism is a band aid for the mind. It may work short term.
One does have to roll with the punches and some of them are not pleasant. It's how you conduct yourself when you are down. With dignity and class. "Stiff Upper Lip" to quote the British.
openWh1te 8y ago
What I dislike the most about New Age Positivism is what you are touching on.... "roll with the punches"
Always, stand up for yourself. You don't need to be a dick about it, a simple "No" may suffice, but being overly positive to the point that you don't stand up for yourself, has negative consequences for your mind.
It will weaken it.
Zippy1776 8y ago
I wish people understood this. I have tried to explain to people about there being an emotional spectrum because we're supposed to feel all parts of the spectrum. Sadly, I have found that most are just hollow shells of humans circling their moniker and parroting their mantra, for whichever they choose.

I like this. I rarely feel good and use it as justification for waiting until I’m at my very best to do something. I’m going to start doing the shit I need to do because I need to do it and the result (even if a failure) is better than the alternative of achieving and learning absolutely nothing.

I got told many years ago: 'If a job is worth doing, it is worth doing badly.'
Took me a while to learn the truth of that.
msarn5150 8y ago
While I agree that you need to accept negative things in your life for what they are if there really out of your control or out of your control at the moment; saying fuck positivity is the worst possible advice you can give to anyone. Where would we be if we accepted negativity completely? Would we have put men on the moon, would we have discovered the new world, grown out of feudalism? These are very macro examples but the same is true On a micro scale. Also never underestimate the importance of guarding your thoughts and tending them like a garden
alexwong95 8y ago
Hey don't hate on feudalism man, it's far superior than our current form of government unlike the propoganda they teach would have us believe.

I think it was in “The Subtle Art of Not Giving a Fuck” the author explains that if you took everyone that has/had some fucked up shit happen to them you’d have just about everyone. What sets people apart is how they deal with it. Victim culture is real these days and it’s being peddled in the news because it works.
throwawayyourliberty 8y ago
It is too easy for us to become victims nowadays. Peace, prosperity and comfort for generations now. Our culture is rewarding now blame, guilt and virtue-signaling more than taking action and responsibility.
bobbydreddits 8y ago
You let yourself become a victim tho.
Bengals3225 8y ago
Use the negative energy to drive yourself harder. I've always found that having a chip on my shoulder gets me where I want to be. Do shit that someone said you cant, prove them wrong.
DarkArcher600 8y ago
I’ve found that that’s useful and quite effective but it wears on you after a while. You can’t be negative all the time without it having a negative toll.
[deleted] 8y ago
Yeah its better to just be happy and positive. Its not bullshit,it actually works. During the recession of 2008/09, people literally had no choice but to go invest in their social support networks. There was nothing else to do. More people started carpooling, having community barbecues, and CEOs of those stock companies were walking around the offices to personally check on employees face to face more often. Its heartwarming,i know. And it shows that we really need social support networks. They are so important. All successful people depend heavily on their social support networks and I GUARANTEE you couldnt achieve anything without them. Its so,so important. Have social support, invest your time and money into those people. They pay back real, quantifiable dividends. Any successful person will say the same. Any one of them. No one has ever made it on their own. Thomas edison, nope. He was with a team of 30 inventors when he made the lightbulb.

I recommend you read "The Subtle Art of Not Giving a Fuck" by Mark Manson. You can be positive, by not giving a shit about shit that doesn't matter.
I like the motivational shit that tells you to stop turning a blind eye to the shit that bothers you and convinces you to get rid of it rather than hold on. That's what matters. That's what works.

speaking about modern positivism, pretty much all "therapies" are based on thinking positively. well, negativity exists for a reason, most likely why one would seek help anyway. cutting all of it out is disabling half of your gut feeling, leading you to their weekly expensive "treatments". some food for thought
flownthedark 8y ago
Everything under the sun that has happened to the billions upon billions of people throughout time can happen to you. We all get to take a bite of the shit sandwich and to insinuate that mine is bigger than yours, or to critique the way you chew is the least common denominator of butthurt.

There's a quote out there somewhere: "You're not supposed to wait for the storm to end, You're supposed to learn how to dance in the fucking rain." I love this post so much because the past 7 months I have truly gotten comfortable with eating up the dark times. Its a part of life, and is the one thing that makes boys into men. I found myself running away from the negativity and suffering and realized that it was just temp comfort. Its way better to relish the pain and suffering than run away from it!

I always liked that Jocko Video called “good” on YouTube. To me it’s the perfect mind altering video to look at things more positively even when something sucks.
Broken arm? Good. Now you can learn how to train with one arm.
Got cancer? Good. Finally an opponent of your caliber.
Got turned down by the girl? Good, Now you know what too do to learn from that.
Etc.
RealRational 8y ago
Except the girl one, they generally don't give any kind of indication of what went wrong, either you're able to observe and recognize the issue, or, more likely, it happened without your knowledge and you get no feedback and no lesson.
prometheus_night 8y ago
Good, then she wasn’t a girl worth your time.
GucciGangBucks 8y ago
You’re right. I didn’t put that much thought into this post. But you’re correct. I agree women will most likely never tell you what you did wrong.
But good, now you get to try and learn what you did wrong.
Never learn? Good, at least you had the balls to approach a women. You got stronger.
[deleted] 8y ago
Good, now you know that no matter what, 10% of the female population is not going to respond positively to your advances. Now focus on the 90% that will.
RealRational 8y ago
Lol, you have those numbers reversed
Captain_NRU 8y ago
She isn't gonna bother handing it to you on a silver platter ya know. You have to figure out where you went wrong(which is usually the case) and learn from your supposed mistakes. That's the only way :)

Yeah man its fuckin weird how people on here have this negative view that you shouldnt have friends and shouldnt be happy because thats delusional etc etc.. its like.. wtf.. students that isolate themselves during stressful exams do worse on tests than students that group together and invest in their social support networks... if you buy your buddies all kombucha or booster juice for the study buddy group then you'll all do better on the test... stick with people man!! People that stick with their social support networks during hard times are way more likely to succeed than people who hunker down and isolate themselves...

The thing about this post, as everything under the sun, is about the correct stating of the old adage, practice equanimity. If not practiced, people get hooked on the highs and are pancaked and in denial when experiencing a low.
A great...if not the greatest quality of a man OP is referring to, is to accept everything about yourself, as you are experiencing it at that point, and to KEEP GOING.... it's part of you but it does not define you.
Man I love the greek culture, feels like they figured shit out millenia ago: PER ASPERA AD ASTRA. Through adversity to the stars.
The same message is repeated through time, example being Rudyard kipling's poem (-IF):
Brantmobile 8y ago
Fuck man, when I was a kid my dad hung that poem on my bedroom wall. It wasn’t until I was 25 that I truly grasped how grand it was. Iron sharpens iron, mas men sharpen men.
Thanks for bringing it all back to me once again.

This is exactly right. I find that Carnegie's books forcefeed you a lot of motivational and positive bullshits with not much to back up but there are suitable tips in there to be used when you're down in the dirt or immensely struggle with something.
A delicate balance of letting it out whenever and using positivity to enable you to do stuff is much needed.
[deleted] 8y ago
Carnegie has very, very useful principles. Its a gold mine. If youre looking for a better book for really establishing a social network and being happy I'd suggest the happiness advantage. Good book.

dawgsen 8y ago
I agree, we needs positivity to not drift into depression and nihilism, but being happy and positive all the time is for women, because they usually have someone sponsoring their positive world.
Matter of fact, negative talk from people about me is what fuels my motivation.
I read in the book 59 seconds (recommended) that research even confirms, we create more ambition when we envision a negative scenario, than a constant positive outlook.
redpillobster 8y ago
Positivity is part of the sick culture of avoiding all pain. You are much happier if instead of thinking about happy thoughts and self confidence, you focus on your goals an self improvement. I spent years reading every self help book I could get my hands in including NLP, and it wasn’t until finding a certain popular psychology professor on YouTube that I actually started making positive changes and overcoming nihilism.
childish206 8y ago
Do you mind telling me who the professor is?
redpillobster 8y ago
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vR6-c3j0K_Y
jm51 8y ago
I did too. It was reading NLP that got me out of that habit. The early days of NLP were innocent enough. Plenty of guys that were skilled enough to warrant a promotion but didn't have the social savvy for management. NLP helped them achieve their true potential.
Then it got hijacked by greedy fuckers that wanted to give the appearance of being better than they were. Style over substance. NLP would say: 'Stop covering your mouth with your hand when you speak, it makes you come across as a liar.' A better response imo would be: 'Stop being such a lying bastard and you won't feel need to put your hand over your mouth when speaking.'
Thanks to learning about NLP, I can often spot obvious users of it and note them as not worthy of trust. Quite a change in mindset to go from 'This person is charming' to 'Why is this person trying to charm me?'
redpillobster 8y ago
Good point. And yeah, that's what I mean, it's all superficial. I'm not saying self-help books and NLP didn't give me good tools. But they're a lot like pickup artistry. What's the point of the tools if you're using them for the wrong reasons?
Fix yourself.
Sommbie 8y ago
Is that popular psychology professor Dr Jordan Peterson? Fellow lobster here.
redpillobster 8y ago
Definitely, he changed my life, even more than TRP did. TRP led me away from inceldom, but there's more to life than being able to get laid. JP helped me get the rest of my life together.
Let me clarify though, I know this subreddit isn't about getting laid. It tells you what you need to do to become a man. JP tells you how to get yourself to do what you need to do and explains why you even should do it in the first place.

jteruel 8y ago
Negative thinking is natural and was (and still is) part of human evolution. There will always be something we like and dislike, even if we pretend to smile and hide it. A typical healthy human mind will have a balance of positive and negative thoughts, and display a wide range of emotion including happiness, sadness, or anger.
JohnBravo9990 8y ago
David Goggins...Heard of him? Sounds familiar...
SrslyTaken 8y ago
You don't know what your shadow is, do you? Seems like you tried to shoehorn it in your argument without any understanding.
Your shadow is basically you projecting onto others what you're actually doing but in denial of it.
openWh1te 8y ago
Where does that definition come from?
Personally, I see "shadow" as my dark side. My hate, my resentment, my bitterness. My lust for power based on manipulation, revenge, and spite.
More time I spend in my shadow, more time I slowly waste my life with weak emotion.
Shadow can bring power, it can help you through difficult shit, especially at the beginning of going from blue to red (pill), but in the long run, it's something to Master, not to be the Slave of.
If you are planning revenge on someone, if you spend time in anger, fantasizing about revenge, then you are seriously losing at the game of Life. Let it go, forgive, you don't need to forget, you don't need to be "too nice" or buddy buddy, so cut out the shit and focus on building good connections with good people.
Seriously, the best revenge is silence. Cut them out, focus on your life, struggle, improve, and probably the loser who manipulated you is still a fucking Loser, because people who rely on their Shadow are typically weak sauce cry baby bitches.
Live long and proposer, guys. Don't fall for that loop of hate and spite. Yoda expressed some serious wisdom on this in the original Star Wars films. Path to the dark side.....
throwawayyourliberty 8y ago
Thanks for bringing that up. If you ignore your lows in life, you are projecting your guilt of having negative emotions onto others. We do not mean something differently.
To clarify my understanding of the shadow: What you ignore the most will tire you down the most. We then divide ourselves into two people: persona and shadow. The more you ignore what you think is wrong with you, the bigger your shadow gets.
NormalAndy 8y ago
Cool. I wonder if that is one reason why it works well to watch what she does over listening to what she says?
TheTacoPolice 8y ago
watch what she says and listen to what she does
Billy-Mayes 8y ago
Positive thinking and affirmations are useless unless you HAVE A REASON for those positive thoughts and affirmations.
If all you do is sit on the coach all day and think positive thoughts, how you are going to have a million dollars and tons of girls, aint shit going to happen..
You need reasons to be positive.
For example, I am going to approach 50 girls today and try this new technique I learned. If I fail, ill adjust and try another 50 tomorrow. I know if I keep doing this I am going to get better and better, etc.
wimmywamwamwabble 8y ago
It isn't settling for anything, you will always pursue a tolerable level work for an end. I've never understood why others stress so hard over matters that have to value to them at all. You're correct, fuck the utilitarian definition of positivity and the thin shroud of motivation. The only thing you ever have to accept in life is that nobody is going to do it for you.
821sleepingbag 8y ago
I disagree with this.
Yes, the struggle is real and the best things in life come from doing the difficult things.
However seeing the positive side of everything and having a confident, positive attitude gives you the best chance of pulling off risky and difficult endeavours.
On another note coping with failure leads to depression.
Depression is simply not productive, we should all want to build power and increase value. Sitting at home negative and depressed is not powerful nor is it conducive to increasing value. You know who is increasing value; the cocky prick at your work who has a massive eg, loves his life and loves doing better than his colleagues at work.
Having a positive attitude through failure allows you to see the lessons that failure teaches, embracing the negative side leads to emotional pitfalls and wallowing where you feel bad about yourself for failing. People do not take positive, useful lessons from failure this way rather they wallow in it and extend the negative effect of failure.
throwawayyourliberty 8y ago
Your comment is important. Please dont confuse accepting negative emotions with having a negative attitude and mindset. Accepting your whole spectrum of emotions is only one important keystone for success. A positive attitude and can do mentality is key as well.
BlakTheory 8y ago
TRP is seeing the truth through lies, here is the truth.
[deleted] 8y ago
You're not wrong, if you try to be happy all the time you'll be depressed. Buuuuut you can't pick up girls as a depressed, boring person. Either fake it or go out when you are in a good mood
throwawayyourliberty 8y ago
Being a 'boring' person is not a situational emotional state. Its your judgement of the characteristics of the person. The whole text above is about not faking it. Who do you think will you pickup with a faked emotional state. If you fake that you are happy when you are tired or low energy, you can not be trusted. Only people who fake it themselves will be available for you then. Not a good option. Plus - as i wrote, you will lose on the long run as well. Less energy. Cool name though.
[deleted] 8y ago
I can get behind what you're saying but I've found women just don't want to be around me UNLESS they percieve as a carefree, charismatic guy; women are shallow enough not to care as long as the tingles are there.
