Disclaimer: I am not a medical professional. As such, I can only discuss my experience and results, potential side effects and what you can expect in the hopes that your decision to either use or discard the information in this post is an informed one.
Beards are awesome. 5 out of 4 doctors agree and countless bros, men and children dream of having one. Why wouldn't you? They can accentuate your facial features to make you look more powerful, manly, mature and even hide a weak chin if that is a concern of yours! Throughout history, facial hair has always been worn by men with pride, much to the envy of those who can't grow theirs.
I couldn't naturally grow a beard worth shit so I turned to something else to get what I wanted: Minoxidil.
If you're one of the those guys who can't grow a beard, this post is for you.
If you're under 21, this post is not for you. Give your body and natural testosterone a chance for a couple years to do its thing before resorting to what essentially is beard steroids.
If you're under 18, you're still in puberty, so don't even consider it. Be patient and apply other RP principles to your life. If a beard is the only thing keeping you back from success, you got issues with everything else.
Brief History of Minoxidil
Minoxidil, commonly known under the brand name Rogaine, was originally used as heart medication, to treat hypertension. It was then noticed that there was an unexpected growth of hair on patients that were consuming it. The drug worked so well that patients were prescribed an early version by their doctors for hair regrowth. Finally, in 1998, a 5% solution was approved by the FDA for nonprescription sale.
But Rogaine/Minoxidil Is For Hair Regrowth!
Well it seemed that way, given the lack of research supporting topical usage of the drug on your beard hairs, but some men took it upon themselves to test it out. Here are a couple testimonials that I've seen:
-Minoxidil Beard Growth Journey [Before And After]
-minoxidil for beards Before and after - миноксидил для бороды
-Asian Beard Minoxidil Journey with Commentary
-24 Men Who Grew Beards Using Minoxidil
This has worked for me personally, taking my beard from a patchy beard that looked like this to one that looks similar to this one (of course, not gonna be posting my actual beard/face, so you'll have to take my word for it unfortunately). This kind of progress took around 5 months or twice daily usage of Minoxidil 5% strength.
How Does It Work?
The hair making up your beard is different than the one on your head. Beard and body hair, are a type of hair called Androgenic hair, which depend on testosterone to grow and mature from a vellus hair to a terminal hair. The latter one is what makes a beard look good. They're darker in color, noticeably thicker and in our case, do not depend on Minoxidil to continue growth, unlike the former vellus hairs. Topical application of Minoxidil will speed up the growth cycle, maturing the hairs much quicker than naturally possible by your body. (I could go into much more details about the mechanism of action but it is not needed for this post.)
Side Effects
Minoxidil is a drug. I want this to be as clear as possible. Almost every drug has potential side effects and this one is not an exception.
Potential side effects include, but are not limited to:
-Burning/Irritation of the eye
-Itching or irritation at the treatment site (by far the most common side effect)
-Redness/puffiness at the treatment site in case of allergic reaction
-Unwanted hair growth in other parts of your body
-The alcohol and Propylene Glycol in the solution may create dandruff and/or contact dermatitis on the treatment site (will go into more detail down below on my experience with beardruff with what I did to get rid of it)
-Swelling of the face and/or extremities
-Rapid and irregular heartbeat (remember that this was used as heart pressure medication and that you are now applying it to your face)
-Loss of vellus hairs if treatment is ended prematurely (will go into more detail below)
-Potential aging of the skin
-Darker eye bags
-Issues with male sex hormones. Just kidding, that's Finasteride. Minoxidil encourages hair growth without interfering with DHT which makes it better for growing facial hair than it's marketed purpose of saving head hair. (Credit to TRP2017)
What Side Effects Did I Have to Deal With?
Personally, I tolerated Minoxidil very well. The first month had only a handful of instances (2 or 3) where I felt my heart rate increase for a couple seconds, kind of like when you overdo it with caffeine. This faded very quickly and has never been an issue since. The only side effect currently affecting me is the dry skin, which is due to the alcohol contained in the solution. Every morning, I gently use a rag drenched in hot water to mop up some of the skin flakes and use some lotion to re-hydrate my skin (personally use Vaseline Intensive Care Advanced Repair Unscented Lotion, bought from Amazon for next to nothing) and I don't look like someone took sandpaper to my face. Any beard oil or moisturizer will work here. I have also bought a derma roller that I use weekly just for that extra collagen boost to prevent aging skin.
How to Get Minoxidil
There are two varieties of this drug: 2% and 5%. I strongly advise to skip the 2% and go straight to 5%, because you'll get quicker results (the percentage is only the concentration of actual Minoxidil in the solution present in the bottles you buy. More Minox = More gains, but also more potential for side effects obviously).
The product can come in an aerosol format or as a liquid in a bottle, typically 2oz per. I much prefer the liquid form, as you usually get a 1mL dropper with your purchase, making application easier. Plus you actually put the amount that you need with no excess.
The brand doesn't really matter, but I personally use Kirkland brand Minoxidil 5% Extra Strength, mostly because it's not the original Rogaine, therefore it's much cheaper. It has worked very well thus far. I get a 6 month supply, or 6 bottles (1 2oz bottle per month).
You can get Minoxidil on Amazon, Ebay (its where I get mine), beauty websites, etc. Hell, you can probably even pick some other brand at your local pharmacy, but it might be more convenient to order online than to go on a scavenger hunt for your beard steroids.
How to Use Minoxidil.
The product you buy should include a 1mL dropper. If not, get one and don't buy the from the same buyer/brand again.
Every day, twice a day you'll draw 1mL of Minoxidil and apply it. I like to squeeze out a couple drops and use the dropper to rub the drug into my skin. You will do the exactly that onto your bald spots first, and use the rest on areas that need work. For example, if you have thick, fully matured sideburns, but a weak goatee, you'll want to use it on the goatee. This order is important, as you may run out of that 1mL before you get to your "stronger" areas.
Ensure that you do not wash your face for at least 4 hours in order for the Minoxidil to fully absorb into your skin.
This routine takes at most 3 minutes of your day so you honestly don't have an excuse to slack off. Shower, put some on. Put your second application before you go to bed, easy.
What Should You Expect?
Nothing. It might not even work for you if you don't have the genetics for it. It might work, like it did for me. You can only know after at least 4 months of consistent usage. You will notice that you are growing plenty of hair, but DO NOT BE FOOLED, those are vellus hairs, which are dependent on Minoxidil and WILL FALL OUT IF YOU STOP TREATMENT BEFORE THEY HAVE FULLY MATURED.
You NEED to stay consistent in order to maintain the beard that you desire, for upwards of 6 months to indefinitely. I personally am not going to risk wasting my time, money and energy by hopping off after 5 months total when I have gotten the beard that I always wanted. I will be using for at least 2 years, even if I shave the beard off to ensure that the hair follicles mature, so that if I do want a beard further down the road, I can grow a full beard once again.
If you don't lift (start lifting obviously) or watch your diet too much (start watching your diet obviously), you might benefit from more exercise and a higher protein intake, as hair follicles are among the fastest growing cells in the human body, meaning there is a possible correlation between an increase in blood flow and higher protein with a higher hair growth rate. There's more to it, but that's not the point of this post.
You should expect a bit of shedding from your head hair, but that is because Minoxidil is making hair around your body grow more, so it is just your older hairs being replaced by newer ones, so no, you aren't going bald. But your arms, eyebrows, etc might get bushier too. I didn't really have hand hair until I started Minoxidil, but now I have a thin layer of hait across the back of both of my hands. I admit I kind of like the look though, but your experience may vary.
In Conclusion
I hope that sharing my experience and what I know will help at least one person on here. I have definitely noticed a night and day difference ever since I've committed to growing out a full beard in my social circle, from people not recognizing me to girls walking up to me and complimenting my beard.
I have had a very successful and positive run with Minoxidil, which is the reason why I'm sharing in the first place, but it is a drug that you are using to affect your body. As such, I tried to be as transparent as I could in order to properly inform your decision.
marsbar77 7y ago
I am interested to know how much effect you think the dermaroller had over the minoxidil....the drug is supposed to increase circulation to regions but the face is not a place that tends to have poor circulation. I wonder if the derma roller would have done the trick alone.
PvRed 7y ago
Absolutely not. Minoxidil tends to destroy collagen on your face (causing dry skin, rapid aging, darker eye bags) and from what I've read, a derma roller helps restore collagen productivity by causing micropunctures on your face. That's the reason why I mentioned I got one

As a real man who fucking farms and does real physical labor each day. The same beta pussy hipsters you see with beards yet can't change a tire.
This will breed so much more than that
thegodfather76 7y ago
I'm 6.2 and 190 lbs and have always had a beard, every woman I have dated told me they didn't like men with beard but they loved it on me.
showerdudes9 7y ago
Is beard growth only dependant on testosterone levels? So if low/patchy beard it always equals low test?
PvRed 7y ago
Age, genetics, diet and hormones all play a role in beard growth, so it can be multiple factors.
I have pretty high T but still could only grow some patchy bullshit so I used Minoxidil to help grow it
showerdudes9 7y ago
i can grow an insane goatee and long thick beard in like no time at all but then my sideburns/facial hair on the cheeks are somewhat patchy for whatever reason. Im gonna try minoxidil for sure. Thanks for the tip. do I need to start the treatment fully shaved or can i have grown some and just use the minoxid where the hair isnt growing mostly?
PvRed 7y ago
They obviously won't grow evenly. What I did was start clean shaven and told my barber to trim it everytime I went for a haircut to keep it tidy until my beard started filling out.
You could also stay clean shaven till you have an even stubble and let it all grow from there, but it's your choice

As a man with a weak jaw, I have zero regrets. This shit works.

Yeah thats normal. It's the alcohol / propylene glycol being in contact with your skin.
james_the_dean 7y ago
I think minoxidil should be sidebar material, or at least recommended a lot more, it is really not that big of a deal, and you can always stop at the bad signs if your body will not tolerate it.
Fucking lol'd when a hair transplant patient said recently that the doctor advised him to use minox on his face 2x/ day for 6 months minimum so he can achieve optimum results.
Just be smart about it. It's good stuff.
Beast___Mode 7y ago
Is beard going to stay after I stop using it ? Many many and many people claims that they lost their gains after stoppage of 6-12 months usage
james_the_dean 7y ago
6-12 months is the minimum time, some people gain facial hair fast, some slow. if it goes terminal than it is there to stay. You need to look at yourself and determine if they went terminal or not. Most people will use it for1.5-2 years, in that timeframe, most of what you can gain will go terminal. Only way to find out is for you to try.
You can find the Minox Beard Spot on facebook they can help you. One thing I've learned is that people generally are not very smart and they will just jump to conclusions based on a few comments from the internet. Try to research it and think for yourself.
zephyrprime 7y ago
I don't know anything about using minox for beard growth but I can tell you it doesn't work a damn for head haid growth. It will cause some fuzz to sprout but it never really grows to full length. Studies show that people who use it are a tiny bit worse off than people who never use it after a few years!
P36hawk 7y ago
WARNING: Don't use this if you have a cat or a dog as pets, it deposits in your pillow and is extremely toxic to those animals, they might die
Brobama420 7y ago
Thank you for this comment.
I just started minoxidil a few days ago and didn't see any warnings about pets from the product itself or on many of the websites I researched about the drug. Going to be extremely careful about washing my sheets/pillows and not letting my cats near it.

When I was younger I tried Rogain foam. It said on the bottle at the time 85% of men had hair come back. Me and my brother must have both been in that 15%.

This stuff can work. Does anyone else think the "beard oil, beard vitamins" that are becoming popular are mostly snake oil
BuffaloWang 7y ago
Beard oils differ in their carrier oil makeup. Certain oils can be better for certain skin types. Generally speaking, the oil blends 1) soften the hairs 2) prevent dandruff/beardruff (for reasons I won't get into). But this is for established beards.
Be skeptical of any beard oil claiming to have growth benefits.
Gawernator 7y ago
Yeah this seems spot on from the research I’ve been doing. I went with a balm. Minoxidil seems to be the only chemical that’ll actually have an effect. Luckily I have decent genetics for it already. Some of these “growth oils” and vitamins seem like 1800’s “elixir” lol

PvRed 7y ago
Beard oil keeps your skin hydrated and nourished but the rest seem like they're worthless
banjew 7y ago
I have full tick beard since 15. Shave that thing off as I don't like it. Go figure. I will gladly exchange 2 more inches of height for all my beard.
mugatucrazypills 7y ago
Gay dudes have beards too. I think the time is better spent lifting or learning some worthwhile skill or just enjoying life.
This post strikes me as a containing a level of neuroticism negatively associated with women.
My facial hair grows like a beast and frankly it's a pain in the ass looking like a hobo(not very high status) on day 2 if you skip the shave.
You'd be better getting friggin hair plugs in your head if balding is your pet peeve than messing with goddamn chemicals and hearrt arthmia for no reason.
Has anyone here ever heard a woman say I'd have banged that buff, rich, confident dude, if only he had had more facial hair.
brootzkrieg 7y ago
Does this work for dudes that have NEVER been able to grow hair on their jowls? I can grow a moustache and chin hair, but at almost 40 I have like 3 actual beard hairs on each cheek. Fucking native genes...
PvRed 7y ago
You can always give it a shot, though you have to be patient and consistent to see if it'll work. If this interests you, I'd recommend a 6 month trial and see if your cheers start filling with vellus hairs
Don_Himself 7y ago
Before resorting to drugs for beard growth, try these things for a month or 2 before wasting your money on this:
Exfoliate your face 2 times per week so that you don't hinder growth of hairs. clean face generally makes your face look better anyway
You'll also want to increase your testosterone levels to make beard growth easier (which requires a good amount of healthy fats, which hairs need for growth anyway)
Lifting heavy, and often, forces blood to your face filled with nutrients, so you'll wanna start doing that ASAP if you haven't already. this boosts test, which also promotes healthy beard growth doubly
SLEEP at least 8 hours every day, no exceptions.
Stop consuming alcohol
Start drinking no less than 1 U.S. gallon of water every day
Also a side note, heavy stubble is rated more attractive than full beard and clean shave. Refrain from shaving, but also don't let it grow out of control just for the sake of it. Trim it often to achieve the stubble look to avoid an uneven, patchy mess. And do understand this shit takes time, so dont go on suicide watch if after 1 or 2 months you dont see desired growth. Just continue to consistently provide the easiest path for beard growth and it'll come.

I'm willing to bet that most of the people who will be using Minox for their beard growth have damn near tried everything before pulling the trigger. I sure have and got nowhere. The thing about minoxidil is that is stimulates follicles that would have taken years to even reach the vellus stage. It's a shortcut that works, like I outlined in my post.
Besides, have you read the post? You repeat most of what I said in your third paragraph.
Yeah well what happens when you can't even grow a full, even stubble, which a lot of the guys here can't do? This post is targeted towards such people, like I've outlined in the introduction.
Again, have you even read it?
Besides, if I want to grow a full beard, I'll grow a full beard because what's "rated more attractive" doesn't matter. I find beards to be badass so I'll grow one, regardless what anyone says. (Apart from my favorite barber, she knows how to make it look sexy)
Don_Himself 7y ago
Extremely unlikely considering majority of guys here, especially n00bs, don't lift Heavy enough to trigger growth anyhow.
Who here actually drinks 1 gallon of water every single day?
Who here gets 8 hours of sleep every single day?
A tiny amount of people. And I bet those guys coincidentally have healthy beards as a result.
lol yea and if I want to be homeless with no job or friends and become obese, I'll do so because what's "rated more attractive" doesn't matter
do what you wish, except argue against proven facts.
PvRed 7y ago
Sorry, we talking about beard or muscle? I honest to god hope that you aren't implying that lifting is the only reason people grow beards. It's mostly genetic as to when, if ever, someone grows a beard. My post's purpose was to give a shortcut based on my own experience in the matter.
Don't put words in my mouth bud. You're completely missing the point of what I said above. Once again.
If you're only here to troll then I won't waste my time with you anymore.
Good day
Don_Himself 7y ago
Do you read posts or just skim them? i clearly said lifting heavy is intense and forces blood to your face, i.e. to your beard hair follicles, which delivers the nutrients needed for your beard to grow.
pause fam
thus why you should be making growth as easy as possible for when your body decides to grow a beard. lol at arguing against this

What size is a decent stubble? In terms of mm's
Imadeausernamewow 7y ago
I have found that either 1mm or 2mm is a good length for me. I bought one of those rechargeable "multi groom" clippers from a drug store (CVS, Rite-Aid, etc) that come with a guard that you can adjust by the MM. you can find one for around $20.
It will likely depend on the thickness of your growth to determine what looks best for you.
Don_Himself 7y ago
as long as it's not a full blown beard, you should be good. I personally trim mine down with a #3 clip, or 7.5mm to 9mm cut. it has never failed me
http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1090513813000226
Essentially, full beard makes you beta-bait, where women will perceive you as a caring hubby/daddy/betabux, than anything else. also, full beards are more attractive to gay men, for what it's worth... kek
stubble on the other hand is most attractive, especially if she's ovulating, where she craves masculine ZFG bad bois
WolfofAnarchy 7y ago
Size doesn't matter. Density does. And color does. I have a terrible facial hair growth that basically gives my chin a dark shadow which looks horrible with my pale skin.
banjew 7y ago
I'm extremely pale and my black beard doesn't look good at any length. Short stubble looks dirty, and with beard I look like rasputin or a russian drug addict.

I wouldn’t start taking Minoxidil or any other hair loss medication or shampoo. In the long run you may have some hair but you will lose your libido, sex drive, erections, motivation, desire, pleasure from things, your skin will look 5 years older, darker, dry, wrinkled, dark circles under eyes, loss of muscle definition and so on. These medication inhibit DHT, one of your best male hormones. They also cause fatigue in your liver and adrenal glands and they will most likely desensitize some neurological path ways. They are in the same category with anti depressants side effects wise. They will cause anhedonia. You will end up a zombie with no desire or sex drive to do anything and people will sense it and ignore you. Girls won’t desire you. I would invest in testosterone therapy and ditch your addictions and find allergic foods. They cause more hair loss along with genetics.
hierophantoms 7y ago
Minoxodil does not inhibit DHT... research helps.
