It seems like guys that understand how dating works scare people. Everyone prefers the idea of the socially awkward guy that somehow manages to get a girl over the confident guy that can pick them up easily.

Exactly. This is effectively a "romantic comedy" staple at this point.
How many rom coms or regular comedies are based on the theme "beta guy wins girl" or "beta guy wins girl over alpha guy" or "beta guy proves he is alpha to win girl"? There are so many.
And this is simply because there are far more beta guys out there than alphas. Sad truth is, these movies aren't actually popular for women, they don't particularly like seeing these beta guys on the big screen (go figure).
Honestly, if I had the time, I should do an analysis of movies with these kinds of themes, and post up the results. It would be very enlightening to give concrete evidence to the things we pretty much know. For instance, women generally have a thing for the villains of most of the action movies that men watch: They don't particularly care for Batman, but for the Joker or Bane.

All of the comments in that thread actually confirm the validity of game. I think the guys that are being called out either only read a couple of sentences about game and then tried to use them or are guys who know nothing about the community and are trying what they think "works."
The most downvoted comment is actually the most insightful:
"if he does it right you won't know."
The guys that are good at PU will never be called out, because it will just appear natural. So actually it is a good thing that women have a preconceived notion of what "Pick up" is, because it only makes it easier for us guys who do it well.

Truth is, every guy's got a game. Most guy's game are just based on what they think should work, and by every token or logic, it really should.
In a rational world, being nice to a woman would make that woman like you more. Having a sense of humor, making her laugh, this should be the only game you should need. Then it's simply a matter of being physically attractive enough. This makes sense.
What doesn't make sense is that the guy just as physically attractive as you, or worse, will have better luck with that woman by treating her badly. Women commonly misunderstand badly as annoying and beta.
