Today, Yahoo reported a [quarterly loss and falling revenue] (http://www.nytimes.com/2016/04/20/technology/yahoo-reports-falling-revenue-and-a-quarterly-loss.html). The company is a good example of what happens when you fail to innovate and employ sexist employment policies in the workplace.
A couple of months ago, a male employee sued Yahoo in court, citing [sexist policies in hiring, promotions, and layoffs] (http://archive.is/MYZE6). Don't worry, I used an archived link for HuffPost.
Yahoo will go down as a case study in business school about how you run a billion-plus company into the ground. Most of us have seen the article about the female only company that went the way of the dodo due to, well, no work getting accomplished due to petty catfights and office politicking. This is what's happening to Yahoo, but to a much slower extent.
Expect to see the company sold off in the coming year, Meyer terminated, and a cleaning out of the female middle-management that has decimated the company.
The value I think this post provides to TRP:
-
Reinforces common perceptions here that sexism in favor of men has rarely sunk a company, but the reverse appears not to be true.
-
Serves as a warning for anybody reading this to avoid investing in or working at Yahoo.
- Provides a schadenboner for anybody that dislikes the Sandbergs and Mayers of the world.

Heh. You should have a look at Fiorina. Bought Compaq, sold Agilent, and the stock was worth less when she left than when she started.
PantsonFire1234 8y ago
Arguing with a feminized society in court is just as pointless as arguing with an actual woman. You end up spending loads of money and energy only to get very little benefit in return. Just walk away.
Women can't deal with that shit. He should have walked away from that job the moment he noticed this crap was being pulled on a regular basis. Just like in a relationship, don't argue with the brat- just walk.
Women and their endless bickering for some fantasy reality where they get everything and then some, tire the fuck out of me. All this freedom shit is getting to their heads and men are dealing with it all wrong. You can't resist the female imperative by means of accusations and claims for justice. All they hear is men to their ears them and they think- "hey this guy's complaining to me about some shit" "I must be very important" "I'm above him, I'm the boss, tee hee!"
Just op out, walk and forget. Women only have power if you let them. The moment you start taking those blessed steps towards the door and into the white light of freedom they get confused.
I mean, what are they gonna do? Beat you up?

Don't get married, Yahoo! AWALT
meh613 8y ago
To be fair, Yahoo had problems before she took over. They weren't sure what they wanted to do -- be a portal, a search engine, or a destination property on the Internet. And so, they just went and purchased companies without rhyme, reason, or a strategy for integration.
They bought flickr, as a photo-sharing destination, but didn't integrate it with their infrastructure.
They bought summly, inherited great people and great technology (I was involved with summly in the early stages) and killed it off.
They bought altavista, but never figured out what to do with it.
Their only asset was alibaba and when their IPO was less than stellar, they weren't able to sell it at the price they wanted to.
CriminalMacabre 8y ago
And Carly Fiorina? She doesn't count because she was a psycho ultrachristian?
Wilreadit 8y ago
This is what happens when you pedestalize women at the office. Let them know and you too know that they can never match a man in skill.
That is because when a man wants to rise high and conquer the world, a woman wants to suck cock and raise babies.
EBPLLRP 8y ago
Doubt this would happen to Google.
Just for fun (Poll)
Who do you think will have a female CEO first Microsoft(upvote) or Apple(Downvote)?
mojo_juju 8y ago
Reminds me of one of my previous jobs in marketing dept of a software company.
Some executive during a meeting remarks how "Golly gee, that Susan in Marketing is such as model employee. After all, we see her here staying late until 7 or 8 pm regularly!"
A month later, I'm having lunch with some guys on her team. Turns out she stays until 7 or 8 pm b/c she chats with her work clique all day and doesn't get her tasks done, so she has to stay late to get her shit done.
It looks to executives like she's staying late... when really, she's just been slacking & chit chatting all day and has to stay late to cover her ass. And she knows it... if she stays late after everyone but executives leave, she'll get the benefit of being recognized as someone who stays late, and possibly get to build camaraderie w/ execs
... I was so glad to get out of that company though, and away from the clique of the pop-culture-celebrities-&-media-obsessed typical basic bitches in the marketing dept.
To be honest, I never want to work side-by-side with women, or have a woman as a superior, ever again.

Microsoft. Apple's old guard know what they're doing
sir_wankalot_here 8y ago
It depends on the distribution of the votes and who benefits by getting the person elected. The failure of GE was done by Jack Welsh and it is an example of share holder maximization which destroys the company. The banking bubble was a cause of this.
There isn't much difference between a Feminazi and OP, both think they are entitled because of what they have between their legs. And like a Feminazi bitch will resort to downvoting instead of arguing the point. Here is an artolce on share holder maximization and how it has contributed to the destruction of US business.
https://eic.cfainstitute.org/2014/10/23/shareholder-value-maximization-the-dumbest-idea-in-the-world/

I work for a former CEO of Yahoo and he used to bitch about her all the time when he sees her name in the papers.
sir_wankalot_here 8y ago
How did he lose control of the board ? Obviously she outsmarted him huh ? ☺ Edit: Judging by the downvotes, most of the Reddit does not understand how CEOs are chosen.
[deleted] 8y ago
Reddit probably believes CEO's are chosen by the People through a Democratic Vote based on their skill to improve the company's long-term financials.
Squeezymypenisy 8y ago
It says in the comment she fucked a guy (later became her husband) who owned stock with his friends in yahoo. They are venture capitalists. Basically she had some of the heavy hitter shareholders backing her. Same as CEO gets chosen usually.
xray777 8y ago
She's far more attractive than he is.....than almost anyone is. You can look it up, the people who interviewed her were "stunned" by how well she interviews.
I'm sure being a gorgeous blond was 95% of it.
sir_wankalot_here 8y ago
Maybe she fucked half of the guys who own large blocks of shares. According to the article, Yahoo wants to get bought out. So she then fucks all the major large block shareholders of another company to convince them to do a stockswap. She meanwhile has issued herself large amounts of share options. Then when she engineers this merger, she benefits, the large shareholder benefit and the little guys get screwed.
xray777 8y ago
See, though......."she fucked her way to the top" is becoming less valid as the majority of men are, and are becoming, more beta. She doesn't have to blow Stan the VP of Engineering to get promoted anymore. She just has to be pretty and Stan will promote her on just the fantasy that she might suck his dick for it. She won't.
Someone like Mayer is pretty enough to get what she wants from most men, including high ranking men, while still keeping her panties on.
juliusstreicher 8y ago
Yep. That, and the threat of a lawsuit, and it's surprising that she wasn't CEO earlier.

About Tumblr. The problem is this attempt to apply financial value to something like social media platforms. Facebook is the only one that really has a potential insane value, considering how much raw data about purchases, personal data, etc people post. Even something like instagram is just visual pics most of the time.
Something like tumblr is a joke in terms of being worth money. Seriously. Its nowhere near 1.1 billion dollars in value. Its nowhere near 250 million or whatever its "valued" at now. Its people just bitching about some social topic on it. It doesn't have any value. Most of the people who use it don't spend money, since they are teen/early 20s somethings who are poor college students who majored in something worthless.
Were seeing this more and more. If you make some next big app/social media site (draw something anyone?), sell it immediately. I dont care if its "your baby". These things are flavor of the months.
Remember when candy crush sold for more money than fucking star wars?
HS-Thompson 8y ago
There are many examples of misplaced women fucking things up, but this is not one of them. Yahoo was a dead man walking when she got there and will be when she leaves. As far as I can tell she has done an admirable if uninspired job trying to dig it out a little without much success and without any spectacular mistakes.
If you want an actual example look at HP, a sterling blue chip tech icon utterly demolished by an idiot and petty CEO who happened to be female.
CastratedBetaOrbiter 7y ago
Marissa Mayer drove Yahoo down the cliff (although it was already falling).
I'm not sure why she gets demonized while Carly Fiorina, who managed to turn HP, a successful blue chip company, to shit didn't get nearly as much flak.
synthrockftw 8y ago
I want to agree with you but I can't. When you bring in someone new to fix a company that's dying, their job is to fix said company.
OP''s post is still valid. Feminist, female centric biased work center is toxic and plummeted yahoo even further.
G_Petronius 8y ago
If you take control of a car that is plunging head-on towards a precipice, I won't fault you for not managing to steer it away in time, but I will fault you if you decide that it's a brilliant idea to flat out on the gas pedal.
Her acquisitions made no sense and burned billions, her hiring policies were fucked and her handling of the PR angle of being a woman in business was atrocious, turning it into a liability rather than the asset it was supposed to be.
HS-Thompson 8y ago
Nothing she did made any difference. The only thing Yahoo had and has going for it is a brilliant investment in Ali Baba. That was unwound and the IPO occurred while she was there and it didn't get fucked up.
She had one job, which was not to fuck that up, and she managed not to blow it. She had another bonus job which was to play around with the web properties and see if she couldn't breathe a little life into them, which didn't really work out nor did it really get any worse.
beachbbqlover 8y ago
HP sat on some epic patents for almost a decade that could have revolutionized computing.
Their hardware also comes prepackaged with a mandatory 500TB per device of useless bloatware. I'm sure they spent all their money on monkeys with typewriters to churn that out. Pi is probably in there somewhere.
CriminalMacabre 8y ago
they retire from portable devices, laptops and even considering leaving desktop pc. What the fuck are they gonna sell, just printers and ink?
RPK12 8y ago
HP split into a consumer device company of the same name and another company called HP Enterprise which works in servers, storage, networking, consulting and support, and services.
HumbleEngineer 8y ago
They just released a premium laptop. If I'm not mistaken they have split the company into two.
beachbbqlover 8y ago
Yeah, so I'd say they're an excellent example of running a business into the ground.
Johnny_Lawless_Esq 8y ago
Bingo. Yahoo was an empty shell long before she got there.
Archange_ 8y ago
An empty shell that had a free cash flow of several billion dollars per year which could have been put to decent use in creating and selling software and services. You needed a real tech CEO for that to happen though.
LazyHandjob 8y ago
Secondary example would be Elizabeth Holmes and Theranos. You can't fix your problems by ignoring them, and then saying that a respected investigative journalist and the FDA were just "wrong".
HS-Thompson 8y ago
Now you're talking. Now there a genuine story of affirmative action type for an incompetent and fraudulent female executive. With a double dose of rich kid thrown in.
Wilreadit 8y ago
Please can we have more on Holmes and Theranos. It was in the news they were being investigated for fraud.
RunawayGrain 8y ago
It's because of sexism, of course:
http://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2015-12-10/can-theranos-ceo-elizabeth-holmes-fend-off-her-critics-
Wilreadit 8y ago
Right, when she was being lauded she said she was hot shit. Now that she might be sued it could be sexism.
Bravo.
What I want to know beside her bitchiness is if there is any substance to the bold claims that Theranos have made.
sir_wankalot_here 8y ago
Redpill to bluepill, redoill to bluepill, can you hear me ?
The purpose of a leader is to get as much loot for themselves and their followers. The dictator's handbook covers the HP/Compaq merger as an example of using a merger to shrink the size of a board to maintain control. And probably she made a fortune along with the guys who backed her.
The only idiot is the guy who wrote this statement
And I will point out the largest financial crisis in history was created by men. And the guys who profited from it where men. They make the HP CEO look like a sardine.
HS-Thompson 8y ago
There are plenty of idiot or incompetent men in business obviously, and plenty of guys that made it there because of their last name or family advantages. That's no secret.
If you're claiming Carly Fiorina was some kind of secret Machiavellian genius for her actions at HP then that's your theory I suppose. I strongly disagree. I didn't even have to call you an idiot to do it.
G_Petronius 8y ago
Taking this as a mark against men is like saying "the biggest scientific misconceptions in history were caused by men". We are the only game in town, of course we'll be responsible for the mistakes as well as the successes.
disposable_me_0001 8y ago
Then you have to look at the track records. I don't have a comprehensive list, but the only well respected female CEO I can think of is Indra Nooyi.
Squeezymypenisy 8y ago
I wouldn't call it a mistake. They knew what they were doing. It was thr largest con in history.
sir_wankalot_here 8y ago
Actually it wasn't a mistake it was intentionally planned.
EarthExile 8y ago
I don't know that the crash was planned, everyone involved would obviously be better off if everything kept working the same way it was. The whole system just ignored warning signs and bent over for the ultra wealthy
HS-Thompson 8y ago
It's not really an intentional plan so much as a principal-agent problem and poorly placed incentives. But advanced critical thinking in a business and economics context may not be your strong suit.
Squeezymypenisy 8y ago
A lot of guys really don't want to believe that.
max_peenor 8y ago
I disagree. It was created by women. How else were we going to fund our rampant materialistic society where we maintain $750B yearly account deficits from imports of consumer goods? With debt. And then more debt. And then layers of toxic tranches of exotic debt. And then some more debt over that.
What happened with the rubber band snapped? They flushed the turd and we just kept importing more and more shit.
My batshit insane prog uncle (a boomer, of course) went on a rant about how Bush ruined the economy. I asked just how this happened. His answer? He said the banks couldn't lend people money any more to buy more stuff, thus crippling the economy. Holy dogsnot on a stick, if the only way to keep your economy going is to borrow more money, you have no economy--you are just swiping the credit card and hoping it won't get maxed out.
The financial crisis never ended. It's still going. They are just swiping the card and swiping the card. Hold on to your balls, my friends, and enjoy the decline.
sir_wankalot_here 8y ago
Most of the debt was caused by banks and other financial institutions buying bad investments in this case financial derivatives, and then making from these derivatives making more derivatives and selling it bad to another institute. It was little more then a Ponzi scheme.
max_peenor 8y ago
Derivatives were how they balanced the account deficits. Once the train left the station, it was its destiny to derail.
Now the fed just prints the money and stuffs it in their vaults. Some say this is an improvement. I say it's playing musical chairs on the deck of the titanic.
sir_wankalot_here 8y ago
Exactly. It is a Ponzi scheme where the Fed (and other central banks) pick up the tab after the balloon goes pop.
Simplified example. Bank A buys 100 mortgages for $100. It then splits it into 100 shares which it sells to Bank B for $110. Bank B then basically takes those 100 shares , rwbundles them and breaks it into 100 more shares which is sells back to bank A for $120.
Every time they do this they profit $10. The guys running the bank then pay themselves huge bonuses.
An observant guy will say this is a Ponzi scheme. Yes. Then when it goes bang. Guess who picks up the tab, the Federal Reserve or you the taxpayer.
As for the finger pointing, blame Bush, blame Clinton, blame Obama. Guess what sucker, all of those guys knew what was happening.
maxrp 8y ago
I wish the OP did some research in to Yahoo and Marissa's history.
From my recollection:
Pre Yahoo: Marrissa joined Google as developer (fresh out of Stanford Uni), she played the game - "worked" long hours and as a pretty young thing catches Google CEO's bluepill eye who decides to date her (you might hear stories she worked 20 hour days but theres plenty who hang around an office late doing nothing in particular romanticising how hard and long they work just to impress the bosses, and the bosses are clueless). (Theres also a good account by a developer claiming Marissa procastinated and caused trouble with development leaving others to fix). CEO/boyfriend makes Marrissa manager, she makes terrible decisions ruins her team like shit, developers can't stand her BS go to CEO and say they're quitting, CEO promotes marissa (out of harms way on a nonessential project just for her). Marissa's relationship with CEO runs its course. Marissa decends down the hirachy and becomes drift wood at google with no promotion options everyone knows shes shit. Marissa gets with Mr Big rich venture capitalist / banker - met visiting google on business.
Meanwhile...Yahoo like all the tech giants is struggling to adapt in a changing tech world/market, Yahoo need to refocus their core business, rebrand, leverage their strengths and recapture their market and capture emerging markets for media, mobile, and streaming content market, to name a few. They have a huge user base. The current Yahoo CEO feels time to cash out, new CEO sought. Temporary acting CEO is on the ball, and best man for the job, he has big new plans to bring Yahoo to forefront again. Note: Yahoo is not a failure at this point, its just lost momentum in the market place and needs a new leader with vision to drive it forward.
Yahoo's board interviews for CEO, Marissa husband gets her in, they hide the pregnancy. The husband's friends push her through as CEO (as they have invested heavily in Yahoo shares).
All the temporary CEO's plans are dimissed, hes pushed out along with his supporters.
From here:
First actions as CEO:
Got rid of employee perks,
fired remote workers,
strict time clocking (which for a dev company is bad).
burn through the companies money buying social media companies, stagnate them and devalue worth.
repackage yahoo mail and core services and make them look nice but perform worse.
release yahoo services as shoddy mobile apps
From then:
Had baby and only two weeks maternity leave. Pissing off a lot of people who said Marissa set bad expecations on new parenting and work life. https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2015/sep/02/yahoo-ceo-marissa-mayer-minimal-maternity-leave-plan-prompts-dismay
Chucks out director in the office next door, build a nursery for her new baby in office next door, release news article being a mother and career woman is easy. Piss off a lot more women. www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2284828/Yahoo-boss-Marissa-Mayer-angers-employees-building-nursery-baby-office.html
continue to buy up overpriced worthless investments. Buys Flikr - stagnates and loses the market. Blows 1.1 BILLION buying Tumblr - stagnantes and becomes a cesspit of porn and retardedness which has since devalued to 230 MILLION!! wtf Marissa!. http://www.techtimes.com/articles/130278/20160203/yahoo-reduces-valuation-of-tumblr-by-230-million-about-23percent-down-from.htm
take the credit for Alibaba investment - the only thing that raised Yahoo share price but was bought before she even joined.
continue bleeding out money and employees from shit management.
Alibaba investments comes to fruition. Marissa knows yahoo is a failure but claims buying all her investments added value (they havent) Shareholders want to cash in on Alibaba sell stock now! Marissa puts together a proposal to sell Alibaba which fails, Marissa decides the future is cling on to the successful Alibaba, sell off yahoo's core business which she fucked up.
replace male staff with female recruits (I wont speculate on increased female capacity accelerating the fuck up at yahoo, but its clear the most passionate people got demotivated and left leaving behind a lot of non-essential / female middle management ) http://archive.is/MYZE6
Yahoo's gender pay gap is exposed, Marissa as a 'female CEO' is criticised. Marissa supports gender inequality pay. Pisses off a whole load more women.
The Yahoo customer base slowly migrates away (their second biggest asset). Yahoo news is outsourced, Yahoo search was replaced with Microsoft's Bing engine behind the scenes and not Yahoo's search engine anymore.
important meeting in 2014 with advertisers (Cannes). Marissa orders a sharp 8:30 start then oversleeps, comes in 90 minutes late as everyone leaves. She looks foolish. http://www.businessinsider.com.au/marissa-mayer-cannes-lions-2014-6 (credit to coxand for pointing this out)
Yahoo is now a terminally ill dying animal that needs rescue by a tech giant and rebranding, but likely Marissa will fuck up and Yahoo will get flushed down the toilet in tech giant history, there was talk of a new company formed which holds the Alibaba investment, and acts as an investment company ( likely headed by her husbands friends )
The whole thing has been a farce, her husband's rich boys club have been waiting to liquidate yahoo from the start of Marissa puppet ceo adventure doing what ever she wants without any clue or accountancy. held up as an inspiration to all women. What a fucking joke.
Of course Marissa will blame the tough markets. She never earnt her position as manager at google, or CEO of yahoo. Its helps to be good looking and female in amongst a pool of bluepiller tech giants and hedge funders. But its all good, shes a female CEO yo! All is forgiven. And who the fuck agreed her $28 million severance deal for a shit job done? W.T.F.
This is worth reading (theres a lot more going on behind the scenes):

Hooooooooly fuck.
I worked in finance. I knew all of this. I kept waiting for you to miss something, to find some hole I could plug. I found zero.
Great, great, great post.
maxrp 7y ago
Thanks. Theres many smaller items* which would have made the post 3x longer but theres enough big issues to paint a clear picture of sheer incompetence on Marissa's part and reinforce OP's post.
*such as yahoo email vulnerablities and slow response to plug the security holes.
iliketreeslikereally 8y ago
Wow this woman is a total wreck haha
redpillbanana 8y ago
That story about oversleeping her important advertiser meeting is hilarious.
It goes to show that once you're worth $300M, you never have to be on time for a meeting ever again.
aiguo888 8y ago
Power hungry women always tend to be sadistic / psychopathic and the benevolent leader is rarely to be found.
Pretty much every female manager I had acted like a tough mother or psycho bitch for some reason, while male managers tend to be reasonably chill, knowing that you don't keep skilled people with options around by being a dick and demanding unrealistic things.
KyfhoMyoba 8y ago
A few weeks ago I saw an article regarding Yahoo's valuation. It turns out that if you add its cash per share, plus its value of its stake in Alibaba (12.5%), they add up to 100% of the share price. IOW, all of Yahoo's operations, which MM is in charge of, are valued by the market as worth NOTHING.
maxrp 8y ago
I am not surprised. her $3 billion of investment buy outs have come to nothing, imagine you own a company get thrown a huge chunk of cash and told you can carry on running it, however you like, you're now rich do you:
Take a long vacation and invest your new found wealth wisely and start your next company, and let the old company go to shit, or
Carry on slaving away at a company thats not yours anymore.
(I hear the former happened in a lot of the companies MM bought up)
[deleted]
hiphoprising 8y ago
So wait, they got her hired so they could sell off shares? I don't understand. I guess this could mean they wanted to sell at the spike from "Yahoo hires female exec! Equality!" since Yahoo was already a dying beast.
maxrp 8y ago
more like the hedgefund/investment company aimed to run it down, break it up, and sell it all off at great profit to themselves.
beginner_ 8y ago
isn't this all part of a big plan so that the guys putting here in as CEO can then buy the rest of Yahoo (alibaba) for cheap and profit?
maxrp 8y ago
My speculation/thought is:
They took enough share to hold power and get total control via Marissa, they were looking to drive yahoo in to the ground get rid of all spare capital and bankrupt it, sell off all the assets undervalued at massive profit to themselves. Theres a lot of money in breaking up a company especially selling off the successful bits at under value to their own investment companies.
My thought is Alibaba was not expected to take off as well as it did and has thwarted their plans as it pushed yahoos value up. My reasoning for this is if head people knew Alibaba would perform so well then Yahoo could not be considered a "failing company" at the time Marissa took over, but it was.
anihilistlol 8y ago
Sounds accurate except for the "removing perks" part. She actually introduced free food to the office, so that the company could waste more money that they didn't have, rather than just promoting talented people who needed to be retained.
She also blew boatloads of money on holiday parties, which is an employee perk, but again, it was a complete fucking waste. Retain good people by paying them more, not be throwing away money that you don't have.
darkpool 8y ago
Awesome post.
Scott Galloway a NYU prof on bloomberg also said, "she is the most overpaid CEO in history" and, "if she hadn't announced she was pregnant with twins she would have been out of the job in 6 months"
watch here http://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2015-09-09/nyu-professor-yahoo-should-be-euthanized-and-marissa-mayer-is-the-most-overpaid-ceo-in-history
maxrp 8y ago
sounds right, the $28million golden handshake is also a deterrent to sack her i can imagine the board saying:
"its less costly if we keep her than pay severance"...yahoo gets run in to the ground.... "in hindsight it would have been less costly to get rid of her"
juliusstreicher 8y ago
I don't believe this for a second.
She will blame the Patriarchy, and, she will get a book deal, several positions at Ivy League universities and become CEO of several more businesses and universities.
And, of course, she will serve as a well-paid consultant to Yahoo as part of her deal.
And, is anybody forgetting her own reality show, the female version of "The Intern", or WTF it is that the Donald is on.
KorianHUN 8y ago
You could make a feminist A LITERAL GOD and they would still fuck up and blame the patriarchy.
stonepimpletilists 8y ago
Either way, like it's explained in Vox book about SJW, this gives a great opportunity for others out there to build off of yahoos failures and be the next tech giant.
If only all the fortune 500s would become inept after their major successes, imagine the capitalism churn that would happen?
It would be a roundabout meritocracy
walking_ape 8y ago
"The Apprentice". The show that The Donald is on is called "The Apprentice".
ForensicFungineer 8y ago
Your list of her first actions are basically suicide in Silicon Valley. The companies here provide all of these insane perks (not just the base level stuff she threw out the window) specifically to attract the best talent possible. You lose your talent and the well will quickly run dry, something she might finally be starting to realize. The only movement I personally have seen from Yahoo in the past 18 months in SF is a series of inexplicable billboards showing only their logo - a real sign that they had nothing coming in the way of innovation. All the while companies like google are morphing into alphabet and Apple is making more money than the U.S. Treasury - literally.
I've read a ton of stuff on her over the past couple years and 90% of her decisions have defied all logic.
maxrp 8y ago
Did you see this? http://www.businessinsider.com.au/marissa-mayer-childrens-book-bobbie-had-a-nickel-2015-1
hilariously bad idea, for someone on a $1m base salary and making $117 million over 5 years.
Marissa introduced some new perks but she played catch up with other tech companies that had them already - not credit worthy.
ForensicFungineer 8y ago
I have heard of this incident but this is the first I read details about it. That has to be one of the more bizarre things I've ever heard of a C-level exec doing in this town, and the professional envelope pushers do some pretty oddball shit.
Luckyluke23 8y ago
man great post, it's a shame that yahoo has pissed down the wind.
though i mean, the only good thing yahoo does WELL is fantasy sports so if someone could buy that out before it foes to hell ( if it hasn't already ) I'd be happy
CriminalMacabre 8y ago
make strict clock times in a dev company is retarded: if you make me enter at 9am sharp, it means i will leave at 5pm sharp even if some retard set the production server in flames. At exactly 5pm it stops being my responsability.
maxrp 8y ago
yeah but then you get bosses who start getting idiotic saying you arn't committed to the project.
tbh she worked at google, after the "start up" phase when the hard work was done and through the golden easy years where 1 day a week was allocated to personal projects. She got promoted pretty fast and was criticised a lot for wasting time and paralyzing projects. I doubt she has a real appreciation for developers work life grinding out quality from 9-5.

G_Petronius 8y ago
It's pretty standard fare for female CEOs. Most have this syndrome that they have to prove they are just as good and even better than men, so they embark in grandiose projects without any clear idea how to make them turn a profit (for the simple reason that it's very rare to have the right idea at the right time in the right place, no matter how talented you are).
For example, Carly Fiorina at HP was notorious for chucking down unrealistic targets to her managers and not caring for their objections, while trotting out the marvels that her plans would achieve to board members and investors. During her tenure HP stock dropped 65% even as the S&P dropped 15%, and when she was replaced HP stocked doubled in value while the market was still going down. This is what the Harvard Business Review concluded about her tenure:
"Despite her charisma and strategic acumen, I believe Fiorina ultimately failed in several ways. She wasn’t able to keep her ego in check or to connect with people at lower levels within the organization. But most importantly, she failed in the fact that she didn’t bring someone like Mark Hurd on board earlier. Great leaders recognize their own weaknesses. Had she been more self-aware of her own shortcomings, she could have brought in a second-in-command, a COO, to enable her to focus on what she did best – strategy and vision."

maxrp 8y ago
that slipped past me too! I've added it to my post for completeness of Marissa's major fuckups, and given you credit for it.
That is hilarious, she messed up any possible deal. It fits with many accounts from her managers she was a serial "no-show" offender.

Reading this makes me wonder if this isn't a sly plan from Google to crush Yahoo...
maxrp 8y ago
Yeah I thought of that, but I believe google are quite happily sitting back watching the shit show unfold of their rival falling apart. Its pointing more at the hedge funders wanted to drive yahoo into the ground break it up and sell off, Alibaba has been a bonus but also an annoyance by keeping yahoo afloat otherwise Marissas spending spree would of killed yahoo's bank long ago.
XDforlife 8y ago
literally fucked her way to the top, and is revered by feminists as some kind of role model, when she's a willfully ignorant retard...
you can't make this shit up.
maxrp 8y ago
She would be nothing without google's boss raising her up, the rich husband and his hedge funder venture capitalist friends. Marissa imho is an example of how the wrong person gets voted to power.
At the time there was a shift towards thinking women in business are wonderful and make careful stratigists where as men are careless risk takers. (regardless of the results). The board wanted a female CEO for PR. I am glad Marissa fucked up and changed this misguided notion while the rest of the tech industry got on with it.
Although the level of fucked up is beyond all recognition she will still be held up by many women and feminists as an amazing success story all women in business and mothers should aspire to be. People and the media dont want to know the truth they want a "powerful business/mother woman icon." regardless of anything.

It's the Hillary Clinton Model...
stonepimpletilists 8y ago
I thought she was a lesbian?
Either way, Clinton is americas Thatcher.. don't kid yourself, this woman is ruthless.
Overkillengine 8y ago
Maybe a bargain basement Thatcher. Hillary has gotten caught with her hand in the figurative cookie jar so many times that even mainstream feminists question her competency. (Getting caught that often makes her a liability to Team Woman.)
stonepimpletilists 8y ago
well, bush was americas tony blair.
It has it's distinct... american flavour.
Funny though, thatcher hated femenism. Didn't like the idea of all the herd taking credit for her rise to the top.
Zachar1a 8y ago
Didn't Thatcher have ethics?
stonepimpletilists 8y ago
depends who you ask. You don't get called the iron lady because of your kindness
CornyHoosier 8y ago
There are many things to not like Hillary Clinton for but I feel it's rather intellectually lazy to think she fucked her way to the top. The woman is a pitbull who will use connections to get ahead ... but not from sucking dick.
Nizmonate 8y ago
Lol quite obviously, Hillary does not suck the dick
PaulAJK 8y ago
She married a guy who became president. How is that not fucking her way to the top?
CornyHoosier 8y ago
If she was setting policy as First Lady of Arkansas or the United States I would agree. However, she was elected to her Senate position and her efforts at that position (and her campaign against Obama in 2008) led to her securing the Secretary of State position. To me that looks like intelligent effort on her part and stupidity would have led to her failure.
She might have gotten a foot in the door but it was her ruthlessness in politics that got her elected. Far too many people underestimate that woman, likely to their own demise.
nooooou 8y ago
she was the Junior Senator from New York who never lived a fucking day in New York in her life. They carpetbagged her in there because she wanted it and now her connections were powerful due to Bill. She got what she wanted, which was an easy senate seat delivered to her where even a corpse as a democrat would be elected.
Send her to Texas and see how she fares. Or let her run in her home state where the people who knew her best could vote for her. But they didn't do that. They gifted her a seat, prepping her for presidential runs.
So please, she didn't earn it. She was given it.
aang1818 8y ago
You seem to be under the false impression that she was elected to senate based on any merit or worth she brought whatsoever. She wasnt, she won solely based on her name. The people voted for a Clinton; purely because they were expecting Bill Clinton 2.0
bluedrygrass 8y ago
Because she doesn't have to, anymore. And because nobody would want her to suck his dick. But she would, if needed. Oh, if she would

Man that reminds me there is this team I work with that are all women and they can't do shit. I had a meeting with them and they just talked about tangential shit the whole time when I'm so busy and don't have time for it.
I am literally doing their job for them and they go and take the credit. I am new so I didn't realize the situation. My male coworker did warn me when I took over the project not to help the them too much but I thought I was doing a good job. So naive looking back. Whisper 8y ago
Ellen Pao. Hillary Clinton. Marissa Meyer. Why is is that these women always seem to fuck someone on their way to the top?
Just once, I'd like to see a woman succeed on her own merits, just to get an idea of what sort of woman that would be. Because, so far, the female model for success appears to be "jump on the correct penis".
[deleted]
IllimitableMan 8y ago
It will probably always be this way. And every woman who makes it to the top feels she has to prove the point she's better than men, because in her heart of hearts she knows she's unworthy of the position and that she only got it from fucking the right guys. She knows she isn't the best person for the job, but rather that she has the job because she's cunning enough to use her sexuality to get shit she doesn't deserve.
Sadly it is men who enable this bullshit. If men perused hookers a little better, they wouldn't feel the need to fuck up companies by making incompetent bitches CEO.
Hookers are way cheaper than paying a CEO salary and destroying a company's net worth anyway. Some of these tech-betas should start seeing hookers, it'll be good for the health of the company they work at.
Whisper 8y ago
I've said it several times... there is a certain threshold of net worth above which a relationship becomes very, very dangerous, and only prostitutes make financial sense. A poor man pays prostitutes so that they will have sex with him. A rich man pays prostitutes so that they will go away afterwards.
Were one of my small ventures to take off and leave me sitting on a fortune of say, 100 million US dollars, I would be sure to pay any woman I had sex with, put on a retainer any woman I had repeated, ongoing sex with, and to never have just one of those (always either none, or at least two).
This would protect me from the possibility of any woman arguing in court that:
The problem isn't even women getting things they didn't contribute to. The problem is that when a woman has an asset large enough to require management rather than simple ownership, she doesn't know how to do that, and doesn't know that she doesn't know. Sometimes, she learns, but usually, she destroys its value.
Thirtysomethink 8y ago
Are you truly unable to think of a single example? I'm not being polemical; I'm trying to figure out if you're serious or not.
A few examples off the top of my head would be Elizabeth Holmes (founder and CEO of Theranos) and Margaret Thatcher.
Edit: I'm reading up on the last year's worth of news about Theranos only just now. Seems like that might not be much of a success after all. But Thatcher surely?
Whisper 8y ago
I actually did think of Maggie Thatcher. But not being British, I didn't get a good, in-context look at her career. I'm pretty sure she didn't ride a dick to power, though.
I see women who can handle authority a lot like I see sentient alien life. The sheer magnitude of the odds tells me that some examples must exist somewhere, but it's gotta pretty fucking unusual because you can look at vast swathes of the universe and not see any.
And most of the people who say they have seen it appear to be delusional loons.
Thirtysomethink 8y ago
I am not inclined to disagree with the generalization. I was simply wondering if you were allowing for the possibility of exceptions. Thanks for replying.
Cobra32233 8y ago
In all fairness, Yahoo was an overvalued POS when she took it over and they only way to keep it afloat would have been to massively trim the fat off the cow.
DyatAss 8y ago
To be fair, plenty of Alpha Males have driven companies into the ground. Being a successful CEO entails much more than using TRP tactics/strategies.
basker932 8y ago
As a matter of fact, yesterday was the extended deadline for companies to submit bids for the core parts of yahoo (excluding alibaba and yahoo japan shares), so it's definitely being sold. Interested bidders are said to be verizon and google (att, time, and ms lost interest they said). I read a week ago that Mayer was shopping herself and her lackeys as part of a package deal to the bidders, but nobody seems to be biting. Dat hamster tho.
One example of a man sinking a company would be when Romero was given free reign over Ion Storm. But at least he recruited the team that made Deus Ex, so it wasn't a complete, unmitigated disaster.
Same with Yahoo's previous chief, Yang, who's the one who made the Alibaba investment that now comprises the bulk of Yahoo's value, although that was seemingly his only shining moment as CEO. Unlike these men however, Mayer did nothing redeeming as the CEO, although she secured generational wealth for herself and her descendents for decades to come to the tune of a $28 million golden parachute it's been reported. That was smart of her, so I guess only the stupid, little people think of the broader picture of the company's welfare, or maybe that's an outdated way of thinking. I suppose there's no way she navigated the corridors of corporate power without being machiavellian and selfish, looking out for numero uno above all else.
I remember one wall st analyst writing a while back that Mayer should've scooped up netflix when its stock was really low. Yeah, that would've been really prescient in hindsight, but I can't fault her as that would've been too brilliant for anyone.
This all reminds me of the 3 lessons from a currently stickied post:
Yahoo as a metaphor for the cucked beta suitor:
"unearned commitment": Mayer was purportedly a capable engineer, but she was mainly picked on the basis of her gender. So she was unqualified and earned commitment too easily.
"comfort and complacency": While she was ineffectively and impotently splashing out a billion for tumbler and throwing ten million a year to Couric to be "global news anchor" because grrrl power, the board kept putting up with it instead of putting up resistance.
Congrats to Mayer for sticking it to the patriarchy (investors) and showing the world that a female CEO can be as ruthless and selfish as a male CEO.
Shit_Lord_Revan 8y ago
Funny you should mention Romero cause he is an excellent example of a blue pill idiot crashing everything to impress a woman.
Stevie Case, the Marissa Meyer of Ion Storm.

The crux of this issue wasn't that she was a crumby boss, it was that they became the token example for female leadership and had to basically turn the other cheek on a lot of bad shit until it was way too late. It's one thing to hire female leadership; it's another to karma-whore your share value through PR stunts pandering to 50% of the population. I'm never against hiring women in business; I'm fully against keeping women in leadership positions because they're women.

walking_ape 8y ago
Many companies have failed for different reasons.
I'm not familiar with what's going on at Yahoo but it seems rather biased to put the blame merely on the CEO being female.
Was Steve Ballmer a woman?
stemgang 8y ago
She specifically mandated an immense affirmative action program to hire more women, in response to imaginary bogeyman like the "wage gap."
But men fall for that trope too. So far I agree with you, that her massive incompetence is not necessarily gendered.
Maybe some other commenters will link her failure to her gender.
xray777 8y ago
Which, I'm sure, is contributing to their massive brain drain.
I can say first hand.....doesn't matter how cool a company is, how neat the job is, or how good the benefits are. When you have entered an "Elmo's World" of SJW totalitarianism, even when run by men, the shininess goes out real quick.
The hushed conversations between male co-workers about politics, the "disappearances" of employees for jargon-filled non-reasons given by HR to the growing concern that the political content of your downtime internet browsing might lead to a "counseling session" all make you want to leave fast.
I predict a pendulum swing of top male talent gravitating towards companies that still maintain a slight shitlord feel. You feel comfortable and natural. Typically the women who thrive in those cultures are also actually good co-workers.
The overwrought HR, SJW, Feminazi boilerplate policy bullshit roosters are going to come home to roost soon. In not too long, explaining you were fired for "philosophical differences" will elicit a slight grin from your interviewer's face as you realize this is a place that you'd actually enjoy working at.
Godtiermasturbator 8y ago
Give an example of a company Steve Ballmer drove into the ground because it would be laughable to use msft as an example
walking_ape 8y ago
Microsoft had a lot of runway that, in the words of Joel Spolsky, they could afford to do everything wrong for 10 years and still survive.
Steve Ballmer pretty much did everything wrong. Microsoft didn't die but it just lost a lot of its influence and relevance during his reign. If it was a smaller company like Yahoo it surely would've tanked.
true_detective_sf 8y ago
Steve Ballmer grew revenues at Microsoft from $25 bil/year to $70 bil/year. He utterly failed at mobile, true. But you cannot compare him to Marissa, who looks to have actually shrunk revenues at Yahoo during her tenure.
walking_ape 8y ago
ok, bad example on my part.
How about the people who ran Apple before Steve Jobs returned to it. Where they women too?

dking168 8y ago
I agree it was because she was a woman to an extent. The problem is that Yahoo was already a failing company before she took over and as a result, she was already fighting a heavy battle. Yahoo is and was a dying company as they provide nothing innovative. They provide the exact same service as Google but Google does it bigger and better.
maxrp 8y ago
well it was stagnating, they had lost momentum and its vision of where to go next, they like other tech giants were in the risky process of finding the next big market about to explode and they were hesitating everyday letting it pass them by, which caused a drive to find a new leader. I wouldn't say they had failed at the point Marissa was hired because they were still a power house of customers, tech still doing well behind the scenes, a known brand and had a lot of capital to throw at the problem. They had everything they needed to propell themselves in to new markets and move on. What they lacked is a powerful head at the top to make it happen.
Many big tech companies found the next thing to drive forward. Marissa just couldn't. Buying companies is fine but the deals were bad, a lot of the companies got rolled in to Yahoo at great expense and they got paid better than Yahoo's in house developers (way to demotivate your staff) and rather then Flickr and Tumblr inovating forwards their market penetration has stagnanted.
When companies are bought its a chance to leverage the strengths it brings, but I didn't see Marissa do this at all.
chairmobile 8y ago
Yahoo has not been about search for a long time. Yahoo in fact does not even have search anymore; it's now bing search under the covers.
What they have is small business stuff, a hodgepodge of acquired conlanies, and the homepage. Your basic point is correct though.

What you got for Indra Nooyi of Pepsi? Ursula Burns for Xerox?Ginni Rometty of IBM?
Archange_ 8y ago
Indra Nooyi has been a zero value CEO. Through her tenure Pepsi has done plenty of acquisitions and demergers and next to no new business development.
She has been in the C-suite of Pepsi for 20 years. She oversaw the divestment of Pepsi's restaurants now named Yum brands. She used the money to purchase other large beverage brands like gatorade or tropicana. She also sold then purchased back shares in Pepsi bottlers; Coca-Cola has done similar things. However Pepsi has not launched any successful new drink or snack under Nooyi. They have not had any big success in entering new markets either. My opinion is that she does a fine job at housekeeping, nothing more.
disposable_me_0001 8y ago
That is amazingly favorable compared to Fioria, Whitman, Pao, and Meyer.
saml01 8y ago

And yet, Yahoo stock has been doing great since she took over. More than doubled in value in fact - outperforming Microsoft, roughly on a par with google/Alphabet.
Got a good explanation for that, OP?
maxrp 8y ago
yes the alibaba shares which were bought before she joined have outperformed everything else combined that yahoo do. read up about it, there lots of analysts saying shes actually added no value to yahoo.
GeneralUproar 8y ago
Haha you just got butt slammed!
chairmobile 8y ago
Lol it seems you know literally nothing about what you're talking about
The alibaba ipo has been the only good thing that happened during her tenure, and it has literally nothing to do with her. She used the money from the ipo to buy some irrelevant websites while riding the stock swell. Now yahoo itself is going broke and will be bought within a year, maybe by Microsoft.
Please do your research.

She's hot on CEO standards.
sir_wankalot_here 8y ago
Yahoo like HP/Compaq is a shining example of why people like OP have their head in their ass. As the dictator's handbook snows, a good leader looks after their own interests and the people who got her in power. And in the process they sock away lots of money.
How come OP does not mention Jack Welsh of GE or the banking bubble in USA, it was caused by men.
http://acrackletsthelightin.info/2016/04/11/The-Dictators-Handbook-a-modern-machiavelli/
Another hard hitting RP fact, without feminists OP would not be around. Explained in my blog post here.
http://acrackletsthelightin.info/2016/04/11/The-decline-of-violence/
That OP has to justify his existence by claiming to belong to a group in this case man indicates that he is male as opposed to a man
Or in more docile primtive tribes, males who failed to become men, became what they call the third gender.
Godtiermasturbator 8y ago
Jack WELCH, you fucking idiot, was one of the most successful corporate leaders of human history
sir_wankalot_here 8y ago
He ran GE into the ground you idiot. He was extremely good for the shareholder. Basically under shareholder maximization of value, you sacrafice future gain for profits now which benefits the CEO etc if they have lots of share options.
Taleeb describes this and describes how the banking bubble was caused. Argue with him.
Wilreadit 8y ago
Jack Welch was capitalism personified. The man turned around GE from an also ran to a very lean profit machine. He was a visionary and was instrumental is down sizing their nuclear business
Godtiermasturbator 8y ago
Welch decimated the fat routinely from his company making it extremely powerful. I will not waste my time reading tripe that spouts silly interpretations of history
sir_wankalot_here 8y ago
A person who predicted the banking bubble and make billions off it has a silly interpretation of history. LMFAO. Gets better and better.
Wilreadit 8y ago
There was no prediction. There was just hot air and talk about bubble bursting.
GE did a great show under Welch. I hate GE, but Welch was a formidable force.
