This is an indication of how dependent women are on men, and she's overlooking all the single mothers that "don't need no man" and all the men who not only survive by themselves but do so after losing all their net worth and are still paying child support, alimony and dealing with a legal system biased against them at every stage.
The fact that she feels entitled to be cold, distant and abusive on his return shows how weak the man is being. He's tolerated her behaviour and thus it continues. u/aDrunkenWhaler has it right: the first time it happens you silently turn around and leave for a few days. She'll be happy as a lark the next time you get home from a trip.

If you come home after a few weeks or months away for work, and she starts a fight moments after, you pick up the bag you left at the door and leave for a few days. No explanations. It will only happen once.

Attachment theory is really strong stuff. It takes ages to modify, even if you are acutely aware of it. It takes a lot of significant effort to rewire, but it can be done.

Easy way. Repeatedly say "I don't need (insert whatever is bothering you here)." A BILLION times.
Go exercise, and stay away from drugs.
