I don’t care if you use a treadmill or the woods. I don’t care if it’s 20 minutes or a marathon. It can come in all shapes and sizes, but I can’t overstate it enough: get up off your ass and go for a run.
Here’s why.
-
It gets you cut, and doesn’t disrupt muscle gain enough to matter. For whatever reason, bodybuilders are prone to avoid cardio—especially running—like the plague, convinced that a quick jog will eat away at their muscles and destroy their hard-earned gains. The reality, though, is that running has a definite place in a balanced workout plan. Running will burn off excess fat, and if you eat and lift right, it’ll leave more muscle and less fat. I was able to spend 6 weeks of this summer gaining 15 pounds, almost exclusively muscle, running 7 days a week and doing body-weight exercises like pull-ups and push-ups. (For a little bit of context here, I’ve always been skinny or skinny-fat because of a fast metabolism) I just kept my calorie intake way up, probably about 3000-3500 a day, which balanced out the calories burned on runs.
-
It increases your joint strength and cardiovascular endurance When it comes to making your body tougher and more durable, running is tough to beat. You’re building up strong bones and joints, which will enhance everything from your deadlifts tomorrow to your health 30, 40, and 50 years down the line. Your cardiovascular endurance, another important factor in the workouts that get you ripped, is also going to go way up with running (important side note- run for at least 20 minutes if you can, that releases a protein that develops cardiovascular muscle tissue and strengthens your heart).
- It builds pain tolerance, clears your mind, and has an instant dopamine rush Running is as much of a mind game as it is a physical challenge, and its psychological rewards are just as great. I’ll be the first to admit that running sucks. Even the fittest people and the best runners out there are feeling the hurt- that’s the point. Running will help you develop mental toughness, an invaluable skill in every part of your life from business to bitches- and, you guessed it, back in our beloved Church of Iron. The time you take to run each day also gives some focus and clarity- the exertion and difficulty help you gain some much-needed focus. Some of my best ideas have come to me while I’m sucking wind on my way up a hill. Afterwards, you get hit with a perfect “runner’s high,” which allows you to make the next few hours positive and productive.
It bears repeating.
Just fucking run.

I ran cross country in High School. Ended up with shin splints. Now that I'm older it's hard on my knees too.
I've taken up obstacle course races the last couple of years. These are a great whole body physical challenge, and you're running for at most a mile between obstacles.
whatdidshewrite 5y ago
Long distance running outdoors is one of the shittiest forms of cardio for your joints
TemporaryPhilosopher 5y ago
Agreed. It would be better to get a bicycle or go swimming in your spare time.
Cardio is good for your lifts. If you're finding yourself losing breath or having to take a small break in between reps during squats or deadlifts, you probably could help it by doing a small amount of cardio.
NotebookAnswer 5y ago
Well you can say about people who go gym too but the difference is that people who go gym and have good form don’t suffer and people who run with good form don’t suffer. If you land on your heel when running, you can say goodbye to your legs. But if you land on the ball of your feet. It’s all good. Ball of your feet cushions your landing. Landing on your heals messes your ankle and knees and potentially your hip.

monsieurhire2 5y ago
What about the barefoot runners who ran on grass?
I did a stint of running a few years ago, doing the Couch to 5K and gradually worked my way up to 5K over a summer, running on grass at a nearby park, and occasionally sand. It actually seemed to toughen up my feet. But then the weather changed, and I had taken up dancing. I still wonder if I should have stuck with it, as long as I stayed on grass.
My friend's girlfriend used to play basketball and run on pavement, and now her knees are bone on bone, and the surgeries and shots did nothing, and she's in a lot of pain.
It seemed to me that running on pavement was a really bad idea, and possibly even a scam to injure a bunch of people and drum up business for all the sick-care professionals out there.

Source? Personally I find that running on a treadmill aggrivates my feet a lot more. I have some minor tendonitis in my feet, and the two things that make it worse are running up steep hills, and treadmills.
Andgelyo 5y ago
This is why I don’t do treadmill, that shit will bust your joints up, I already got a torn meniscus so I do the stepper
whatdidshewrite 5y ago
It depends on what you’re running on. The harder the surface, the harder the impact is that is absorbed by your joints. So if you’re running outside on grass, that’s not as bad as running on concrete (which is what I assume most people do when they ‘go for a jog’).
Running barefoot on sand for example, is really easy on your joints and is a good way to work muscles you don’t normally use.
Running up hills takes pressure off your joints and puts it on your muscles. The only reason I can think of it hurting you is if your tendons are stiff, since placing your foot on a steep incline stretches your calf.
If a treadmill hurts more than running on concrete, it must be a shitty treadmill (they’re supposed to have shock absorbers).
BornShook 5y ago
I run on grass whenever I can. Definitly better on the knees.

Anyone with a basic understanding of physiology would know you did not gain even close to 15 lba of muscle in 6 weeks. Maybe 6 lbs at most. The rest is likely water retained due to increased glycogen stores because you are actually eating a lot of carbs. Also...fat...because you cannot gain only muscle. You gain fat and muscle at the same time usually.

Running fucks your muscle gains. If you run, your body will break down excess muscle tissue in order to make you a better runner. If you lift heavy shit, your body will develop muscle to make you better at lifting heavy shit.
If running becomes a frequent hobby, say goodbye to your legs, and your arms wont reach their potential fullness.
Also, running is one of the highest risk activities for injury, especially trail running, which is the most fun kind of running IMO.
Even when done correctly, there are still a fuckton of knee, back, and ankle injuries that are caused from running.
That said, I love to run and do it once in a while. Few things are so satisfying.
However, HIIT is much more effective at cutting weight and does not affect muscle loss at all, it can even help gain.

Rigorous commitment to any sport, and gruelling training will undeniably solidify your frame and confidence. I can attest to point #3 with respect to triathlon, something I recommend if anyone wants to try. There's a good saying... "it doesn't get easier, you just get faster". Most non-pro, serious triathletes are working people and can't train 15+ hours like pros do. You have to fit in something like a 7-10hour training schedule, which means with less volume, you train with higher intensity. You really dig deep into a well measured, scientifically-sensical pain-cave, you train your mind-body connection under serious strain, and will experience how long that final 5 minutes can be on an interval day. 5am sessions and 2x a day become a norm. Training is meditative and puts you in a flow state; taking that next stroke, that next breath, that next step when you run. You will swim in open water, and cold water will be second nature over time. Weight lifting is also incorporated and on a more aesthetic side, you get a lean, cut, toned muscular look that is functional. Training with a club also is incredibly motivating, knowing that like you, there are others who also dig into that same pain cave like you do. Definitely give some form of endurance sport a go!

I’ve found building leg muscle gets you cut much better than running. 2 days a week of heavy squats along with 1 day a week of leg extensions and leg curls will build a ton of muscle, increase your testosterone, speed up your motabolism, and get your abs ripped.
whataccent 5y ago
I almost exclusively cycle and use the elliptical as my primary workouts, as I rely on them when returning from a gym hiatus. I don't like the pounding of the treadmill and prefer short distances if running outside. I like to think I'm avoiding long-term damage, as the only pain I feel is the initial burn and when the hill setting on the elliptical is peaking. I transitioned from high cardio running to strenuous hill running, because the features were augmented. Last week I even did 65 minutes on the highest hill setting.

Sumsar01 5y ago
Running is about the worst cardio you can do if your lifting seriusly. It's high impact so it will take a toll on recovery and your probably not that good at it.
atticusfinch1973 5y ago
I've been a running coach for 15 years. And even then I believe that long distance running is actually terrible for you long term unless you're adapted to it over a period of years (as some cultures are).
Most runners also do it way too much and all wrong in terms of form, which is why the rates of injury among runners is insanely high. It keeps me in business as a rehab coach. If you're young (as the OP obviously is) then you can get away with it. But once you hit a certain threshold the rate of injury skyrockets.
Interval work, short distance running and sprints are great for cardiovascular capacity, bone density and general fitness plus the endorphin rush you said, I don't disagree with you there.
And you didn't gain 15 pounds of muscle in 6 weeks.
McRoddy 5y ago
Yea that 15 pound shit I skipped all the way to the comments lmao. I started working out emaciated at 6 feet 125 pounds and 8 weeks of dedicating everything to bodybuilding took me to like 135.

max_peenor 5y ago
Body type also makes a big difference. I see lithe, shorter guys in their 70s still running. I had to stop in my 30s because I could tell my joints were getting pissed. Sure enough, I've already notched up two scopes on my knees. The key is to find something that doesn't pound the joints and admittedly being light helps that.
Of course, being light also means you aren't building strength and that's a whole other problem.
THEdirtyDotterFUCKr 5y ago
I learned in the military that skipping is a helluva lot easier on the joints and significantly faster than walking. About par with jogging with a lot less effort.

I hate running, I figured out the above because I would barely pass the run portion of a PT test. I would sprint, get winded, walk a a few meters, sprint, repeat. One day I decided to skip instead of walk, and sprint every X seconds until I was winded, skip, repeat. Passed, do not recall my score.

For cardio, I jump rope. Unless I am the only one a bear is chasing or there is a million dollar giveaway, I sure as shit will not run again.
Yakatonker 5y ago
At maximum a natural weight lifter will gain 3 pounds a month. The only way OP could possibly get 15 pounds of "muscle" in six weeks is by using TRT, and anabolic drugs.
A guy who's juiced can also literally gain more muscle being a chair warrior then a guy who goes and naturally pays his dues at the gym.
halfback910 5y ago
You can't even gain 15 pounds of fat in 6 weeks. He must have gained some combination of muscle, fat, water, and probably lies.
KrakaLakak 5y ago
Pretty sure that study is wrongly interpreted. Gaining weight(water, fat) more like, certainly not muscle.
wiffofass 5y ago
I've tried both. There's no way it's true. I had a surgery and wasn't allowed in the gym for a while. I upped juice doses to maintain what I had but I still looked like I didn't lift after a while. You aren't building shit without training no matter what you take
tempolaca 5y ago
At most he gained 5 pounds of muscle and 10 pounds of water.
SeriousProfit 5y ago
Yeah even with juice its very unlikely he gained 15 pounds of pure muscle in 6 weeks unless he was a beginner lifter and hopped on massive amounts of gear. Most likely just forgot to take AI and retained all the water he drank.

Running kick starts your brain in the morning and adds endurance and vitality to your day. I feel way better running every morning.

I wouldn't run more than 15 minutes though. I have been doing that for months now, today I started at 5 minutes. I am going to try that a week or two to see if I can use that extra five minutes lifting instead.
CockPrevails 5y ago
Swimming is better if you can manage it. I am finally moving into a sweet apartment that has a pool in the building and I intend to swim everyday for my cardio.
Running ruins your joints, particularly pounding on cement. All that endurance running theory is bullshit. We sprint, we trap, and we kill from afar. We are not the world's best endurance animal. Throwing rocks and spears made us into insane apex predators, not walking after animals until they died of dehydration.
If you are at all active outside you are probably taking unnecessary joint damage already. Anyone thinking about joining the army will get them destroyed by marching. You don't need to pre-destroy them.
rogerramjetz 5y ago
I experimented with running, jogging and HIIT along with weights.
At first I was just doing steady state and kept building up to an hour solid. Then I kept pushing up the speed 8KM/HR, 9KM/HR until I nearly got to 10KM/HR for a whole hour. I found that it fucked me for days afterwards for no real advantage.
Then I tried HIIT with spurts between 10 and 17KM/HR. This also fucked my joints even though the intervals were short.
I now just stick to slow steady state because I simply enjoy it and it doesn't take a toll on my joints. I do 7KM/HR for an hour twice a week and add in 15-20 minutes at that speed after some weight sessions. Anything faster than about 8KM/HR fucks my joints (I'm almost 40). This rules out HIIT for me.
One of the better articles I have found around benefits of long steady state sessions is around cardiac stroke volume benefits - http://muaythaipros.com/how-training-like-a-traditional-thai-boxer-matches-modern-training-methods/ (I haven't trained Muay Thai for a few years, but it's interesting regardless).
Also, slow average pace for a few hours a week shows the lowest rates of mortality - https://fitness.stackexchange.com/questions/31597/hiit-vs-steady-state-long-term-health-effects ...
Weights and diet is still king for body composition but cardio still had a place to work the energy systems and for stress relief etc.
Ronaldo-CR7- 5y ago
I get what your trying to say and I agree. However, your first point is a serious generalization and lacks details. Losing fat while not losing muscle is a lot more complex than you made it out to bed. The post is written with good intentions and is great advice but getting cut and retaining muscle is a lot more complicated.

canadianhousecoat 5y ago
I've been running on and off not due to fitness but due to sheer necessity for my career of choice and unless its necessary for a certain goal I wouldn't reccomend it at all if you're trying to gain mass or if you have anything related to lower back pain or chronic joint pain.
On the other hand find a spin class or get onto a bike... All the cardio benefits with none of the joint pain.... and depending on the class women swarm them.
3 weeks ago I benched 300 lbs now I'm down too 250 max. I've begun to run distance again and lost a lot of upper body gains... Like with everything you need to choose your balance and what you're willing to change.
Not everyone will agree with me, but that's my 2 cents.
WarriorMonkMode 5y ago
Swim. Better for your joints. Running long-term fucks up your joints over time.
dukes1998 5y ago
Yeah, I highly doubt you put on 15 pounds of muscle in 6 weeks without gear or being a beginner. You also don’t “burn off more fat”. It doesn’t work that way.
Your other two points are solid, really no need to totally exaggerate the benefits of running in relation to putting on muscle and lifting because they’re totally different things and burning more calories during a bulk just means you have to eat more to make up for it.
[deleted]
Gl0weN 5y ago
I don't think you're experienced enough to talk about why body builders avoid running.
Running burns calories, to gain muscle and weight you need an excess amount of calories per day. 3000 calories, if you run that's around 2400 calories so not only do you not meet your goal but you do in fact hurt your muscle growth in the long run.
Pointless thread with useless ''facts''
Andgelyo 5y ago
This doesnt apply to the fat fucks who eat like crap and have 30 % body fat which is most of America (assuming OP is American). I love to eat, so I do cardio. I also play basketball and lift 4-5x a week. Running is very beneficial for a person like me.
Gl0weN 5y ago
Do you play rec basketball?
I don't see how running is beneficial for you if you already play basketball and lift 4-5 times a week. This applies to you as well considering you already run enough while playing basketball unless you play it like 1-2 times a week.
Actually it might be beneficial if you eat 4-5k calories a day which I doubt
Andgelyo 5y ago
Pick up games and rec ball, although some of my friends who I’ve trained with have played AAU and college ball.
Running/cardio will help me drop body fat to be more lighter and athletic. It can also improve my endurance on the court. Lastly, if I train HIIT, I could be more explosive. Come on bruh.
Nearly all the great youtube fitness experts advocate HIIT training (Jeremy Ether and Athlean X for example).
SeasonedRP 5y ago
I've read pros and cons of distance running, and have done various types of it throughout my training history. My ortho isn't a fan of it long term, and I've seen lots of runners my age need knee and hip replacements. People will counter with "you have to use proper form." Maybe. What I found effective with strength training was doing 1-2 mile runs twice or three times per week, and sometimes substituting 400 meter or 800 meter intervals. I never had any joint problems from doing this, and it kept me in good shape. Instead of doing this, those with enough time could go to a boxing or MMA gym twice a week and get an excellent cardio workout. For those whose primary focus is strength training and who desire doing some form of long, steady state cardio, I'd use an elliptical or bike instead of pounding my joints on the pavement for 5 miles or more. I don't know if there's anything to this or not, but it strikes me that a muscular 200 lb athlete would absorb a lot more force than a 130 lb distance runner, and thus the former should do different forms of cardio.
oldman_stone 5y ago
I ran every day in the marines 5+ miles sometimes two times a day becuse i was weak and could not keep up the people juicing. My body was wreaked because of it. it took around 1 year for my body to stop hurting and then another year to at least work out.
swampbastard1415 5y ago
I love running but have largely cut it out and only use it as a rare stress reliever. I purely lift and do BJJ now. The reason bodybuilders minimize cardio is because it sends the wrong signal to your body, it signals a catabolic state rather than an anabolic state. This is as I understand it, please post evidence against this if you have it.
Andgelyo 5y ago
Was about to post something similar. Thanks OP. Running/cardio has numerous benefits since it’s make you lose body fat (faster) and actually makes you somewhat “smarter” (improved brain function). I run at least a mile after my work outs and feel amazing.
Edit: I do HIIT, since i play loads of basketball and my body has been conditioned well enough

Jack Daniel's Running coach has a book called Daniel's Running Formula. It outlines the principles to making an effective running program. It got me to a faster mile now at 153 lbs than I could get 9 years ago in HS track at 135. I only run 3 days a week. I train for a fast mile and at most hit 15 miles in a week and my joints don't hurt.
Just saying "Run" is a bit too simplistic though, just like a lot (not all) of guys on here think that simply moving weights is enough to reach their physical goals. Sure you'll see improvements when starting from zero, but if you don't learn the basics, you only have yourself to blame when you stall with either running or lifting.
Running doesn't hurt lifting gains nearly to the degree most people preach, and if you have better endurance, it has plenty of transfer to sex, allowing you to go harder, longer, provided you don't cum.

Lift intelligently, run intelligently, eat intelligently, and achieve great things.

You cannot apply this training form to all types of people. A professional bodybuilder wouldn’t run because they do incline on a treadmill for 45min 3 times a week. You burn more fat than running consistently. Sprinting, HIIT intervals are most efficient cause you get proper fat burn for some hours after the training. It boils down to what you want to achieve. You don’t need cardio to get jacked. 80% of your results come from your hard work in the kitchen. Eat lean and clean and lift heavy you can skip running. Clears your mind as good as.

Looking at fitness through a mechanistic, materialist "what is in it for me" point of view is contradictory to the concept of fitness. There is no economic scale or graph that's ever going to show you the profit of spending endless amounts of hours in a self induced pain area. Especially when you take into consideration your boss would rather have you work after hours and then make you take his friends anti-depressants to cope with unfavorable conditions.
Take a super depressed teen. What do you think is on his mind? Video games, "hmm... masturbation" and anxiety. Give him something to believe in because he sure as fuck doesn't believe in himself. Give him a good o'l Muslim concept of paradise. He doesn't believe in himself but Paradise doesn't care, you either get the job done or not. Tell him he has to reach a 3 plate bench, 5 plate squat, 6 plate deadlift. He has no excuses. Either hes going to make himself get to that level or suffer in hell as the eternal cuck.
Sometimes hell is on earth and sometimes you feel like in paradise too. Being the pushover who has a brain fart every time hes met with an challenge is what happens to the eternal cuckold. He also has to witness a never ending simulation of his "girlfriends" getting fucked in the ass while hes working overtime. Hes probably aware "his wife" is sleeping with other men but knows she is his only hope at getting sex so he will ignore it until one day she cucks you off your cuckwage and maybe children too, assuming you're not castrated from all those beers you drank to "relax".
The choice is yours. Either you're going to be the eternal cuckold or Chad who stands by his principles, feels good from his inner narrative and gets views from women but dosen't care because his sense of masculinity comes from within and cannot be validated with material objects but ideals he lives up to.
BillyRedRocks 5y ago
Your rhetoric is getting better, keep it up.
DeGENZerate 5y ago
Idealism>materialism. The biggest problem with the red pill is it tries to combine the two into one big Red Pill Ideology. They're fundamentally opposed principles.
Everyone came here for ideals but what they got was watered down with materials like Rollo rolloing up in his new lambo next to soap boy.
These things wont solve your problems and you deserve better. A life of direction led by discipline with a healthy dose of traditional thinking.

Monitization in any form, even if just to covers costs, which is the vast majority if it (and rarely even closely enough).

Who said monetization of The Red Pill was inherently bad I surely didn't. More importantly why are you criticizing my dislike for materialism which caused the state of being neccessary to require a Red Pill. By putting money before family and collective relationships. It seems like you are asserting I did something wrong but I have to ask: what?

You have different mistakes. Your last sentence is fine except the word traditional maybe. Talking about idealism in TRP might pass but if afterwards you're criticizing Rollo then you're just a moron and everyone will discard your whole message, as they should by the way.
PS: people came here to get laid, you seem to have not read the rules.

You are a retard that can't read and a gamma. I'm almost done trying to help you fucks.

Roosh in his recent Serbian interview said just trying to hump everything like a dog is a flawed. The system is designed to boost such activities. The cost for this is dissolution of family structure which eventually means you will be replaced with immigrants and the government will use their existence to steal rights from you to hurry up the progress of ethnic replacement.

I didn't say you were incorrect, nor that I disagree with you. I was just pointing out rhetorical mistakes as in ineffective rhetoric.

Nice adhominem. Would a rational male have done that? Exactly. Cuz you have no values beyond cars and women

It's a diagnosis. Good luck with your endeavours.
PS: I'd google what gamma means.

uhh alfa male alert! Too much alpha skew to reason too busy with vagina
Being reliant on women as a source of motivation is very blue pill and that's exactly what is being done here.
