You are right but it's a direct affect of someone somewhere (political groups I assume) getting very good at making language into a weapon to beat other people with. These people are very devious in dressing up things as "Oh gosh helping others!" as they straight up train you to psychologically murder anyone you discuss literally anything with.

You can turn off facebook reddit the news but they watch the news and argue on facebook. Someone beats on them, they start into beating on you. You start cutting people out but then it starts infecting the people you can't just get rid of - your coworkers, your boss, your wife, your daughter. And it's not a coincidence that's their goal - mandatory indoctrination in order to keep your job, or survive at school, etc.

You try to stay out of it but then you find yourself losing. The sjw-woman at work starts pushing her work onto you and when you protest she runs over to the manager and says you're "attacking her because she's a woman" and the boss punishes you - because hr and the bosses above him automatically assume you are bad, bad, bad because of your gender. You try to have dinner with friends but they are trapped at home with their kids and start acting towards you like their kids act towards them - but they're not your kids, endless whining and barely contained aggression from being couped up inside is awful coming from another adult. They can tell you start to dislike them and suddenly they're telling you that you're living a "privileged" lifestyle and aren't allowed to notice your misery. The only real emotion they're allowed to express is how their daughter is in a play and how amazing their ex-wife is you realize you're just an emotional tampon for them, like they are for these other people. They have no energy left to do anything else.

So someone new goes "Oh hey, what did you think of - " and you start using any tactic you can to avoid getting into another conversation where either you agree you're a nasty horrible person or they'll try to attack you later for the crime of not agreeing with everything they say.

You're absolutely right that americans are traumatized, but someone is pushing it. It didn't just happen on its own.
