My hubs loves it when I watch him play video games. We do enjoy playing them together, but he also likes it when I watch him play. He's currently playing Alien Isolation (very thrilling!). There are certain times when there's a message he reads that has a code he needs to use later on. I always make a point to remember the code just in case he forgets (he remembers them most of the time). The other day, while he was playing, I had the code in my mind, and he got up to the door and quickly needed to enter it . He said he had forgotten the code, so I piped up and recited it. He was so grateful! It really seemed to make him beam that I was paying attention to his game. It's just one of those "small, but big" things that really lets him know that I care. There are some times when he's playing that I'm on my laptop or my phone (but he knows it's a "you do your thing, and I do my thing" time), but when I watch him play, I'm totally focused on his game. I'm sure it makes him feel loved :)
What are some of the "small but big" things that you do to help your captain out?

Will do! He just finished it about a week or so ago. Such a tense game!!

You red pill women are wonderful.
Killing aliens, crushing enemies, and saving the world with girl in your corner cheering you on is one of the best feelings. We usually get shamed for our hobby.
Lana Del Rey got it right with her first single.

Thanks for writing this up, I will be adding this to the Field Reports post located on the side-bar.

What an honor! Thank you! :)

My guy hates alien isolation and thinks its one of the worst. His memory is better than mine, pretty much everything else head related lol so Im not much of a help to him in that department. He does like it I think, having an audience, me. -_-
Granted we still think differently, I can solve certain puzzles better than him, like spacial, so I get him out when hes stuck lol. Like in watchdogs where theres a lot of parkour puzzles.

I started playing Hearthstone with my fiance. I noticed he liked it and he started playing Neopets for me, I did not ask him to though and he didn't really ask me to play his game either. But I ended up LOVING his game and I can see how happy he is when he sees me having fun playing a game that he loves too. I also think its sweet that he took interest in my game, although he doesn't play as often which is totally okay with me :). I'm actually getting quite good at Hearthstone haha
aTweetingBird 11y ago
How fun!! Ahh! I used to play Neopets all of the time! I loved it! How sweet that you both played "each other's" game!
Lizziloo87 11y ago
When we met he got me into board games too. I love playing them now. We play arkham horror well into the night when we have the time and the coffee on hand. It's such a fun way to spend time together and I'm glad I was open to trying new ways of having fun. :)

Awesome! I love that my husband is into games, because there are many that I enjoy, but I would not be able to play myself. I'm not very good at some types of games, but I love the story and am happy that he's good at them so that I can experience it!
Lizziloo87 11y ago
Yeah there are some that I don't play and he plays. lol He's better than I am but it makes him happy that I join in on some games he plays and take interest in his interests :)

We are both huge World of Warcraft players. When I started playing (a few years before even meeting my husband) I would play a Warlock (a character that does damage to enemies). Now that he's in the game, he discovered he LOVES to tank (for non WoW players, the tank is the person that goes in the front, aggroes enemies, and gets hit a lot, so the tank needs constant healing). A bit later I made a Priest (a healer), so now when we play he tanks and I'm his healer.
Kittenkajira 11y ago
We play lots of WoW, too!

So sweet!!

We just finished Diablo 3 last night and I made a point to stay behind his character so he would be leading, versus our characters being all over the place or together. I also picked a Wizard while he chose the Crusader so the characters supplemented each other very well. I'm the one who has played the other Diablo's so there were times my experience of understanding the game helped us, but I didn't suggest things unless he started getting antsy.
I also keep a ton of change in my purse because he typically will pay for everything in cash and instead of him having to break 100s poorly I like to give him the exact change so it can be broke properly, or for any other reason.
aTweetingBird 11y ago
That's so awesome!! Teamwork :)
And very thoughtful to keep change in your purse!
eatplaycrush 11y ago
The change makes a difference for me too now. I actually save a ton of change every month then roll it so I can pay for little things for my training that's not being taken out of our direct funds or this last month I bought several nice cheeses (goat cheese with lavender and fennel is to die for fyi) and cured meats and we did a "kings food" night with all of that and red wine. It also helps since I seem to be cursed by purchases that will break bills poorly and ever since my SO I'm pretty OCD about that too.
WhimsicalWonderland 11y ago
This is HILARIOUS cause my SO and I play the same exact roles/characters. We're in the middle of Act V right now so we're almost done too.
What other games have you guys found to be fun together? We're currently playing League of Legends and Dynasty Warriors as well.
eatplaycrush 11y ago
That's awesome! Honestly, this is the first game we have played together in a while. We just got an Xbox one since our ps3 stopped reading discs (apparently an easy fix though) so we picked up d3 and a star wars game he was interested in. Other then this we have played a lot of COD, pocket legends on ios/android we played for a while, and that's been the extent since we have been so busy.
I've been looking for a new game for us to play because winter is typically when we have the most down time to be able to actually enjoy the games. I've heard a lot about League of Legends so I'm going to check that out.
WhimsicalWonderland 11y ago
Ohhh how do you like the Xbox One? We just recently got the PS4.
Is the Star Wars game 2 player? I'll definitely check out Pocket Legends now too.
League of Legends has been one of our favorites for 2-3 years and we always go back to it. There's a bit of a learning curve but I promise it's worth it! It's a PC game though that requires proper set up to play (mouse control is extremely important so you need a stable table to play).
eatplaycrush 11y ago
We bought a ps4 last Thanksgiving and ended up selling it December/January on Craigslist to some super excited dude because frankly there were NO games for it at that time and we knew the prices would drop so might as well make a small profit then get it again later. We definitely like the Xbox one, but we still like the PS4 better overall. Knowing my SO he will probably try and get one for our winter activities.
The Star Wars game he got is only single player, but I do know they have co-op star wars and I can't remember which one I played but it was definitely fun. Also was on ps3, though, so I'm not sure it they have is for ps4 yet or an equivalent/better version.
We both have pretty good laptops that are stable enough for gaming. He has a mouse for his, but I don't so thank you for letting me know this tip so I can grab one if we do decide to play! :)

It's not the activity, it's the thought behind it. Cheering for a BF when he plays soccer, helping him as he builds some cabinets, works on a car, or acknowledging his skill when he fixes something. It's about watching the person you love do something that they enjoy and that requires skill. Admiring and watching when an SO displays skill is a simple and easy way First Mates can show they are interested and attentive.

Oh, ha. Thanks. I'm still new to this red pill theory.

I've been doing the same thing tonight! My husband loves strategy games, like Crusader Kings (which I have just finished watching him play), and long ago we spent an evening where he taught me how to play it (he loves teaching me about his hobbies that don't already overlap with my own) and got me absolutely hooked. I was still playing when he woke up (hooray for laptops in bed) and he was so happy that I got so engrossed in something he'd taught me. We discuss strategy together and I can remind him of details I've noticed that may prove benificial to him later (i.e. The king of such-and-such has a daughter you could marry your heir to for an alliance...). If he's playing a game I have more experience in than he does (like the Elder Scrolls games), I can tell him which missions are the most worthwhile as he comes across them, where to pick up good loot, or how to solve some of the puzzle things to get through doors. And sometimes I'll made notes of numeric codes or stuff he needs to remember for games, too. And I keep him supplied with snacks and drinks (mostly refilling his water bottle or coffee) while he's gaming, which makes him very happy, because then he never has to stop at an inopportune time due to thirst (particularly useful for online gaming--he loves to play War Thunder and teach me about all the WW2 planes while he shoots them down). And I can take over for him for a moment or two if he needs a bathroom break while playing online, and he can usually count on me not to get killed. Usually. :)
proprioceptor 11y ago
My fiance looooooves Crusader Kings! I'm not always around when he plays it, but it's always fun to hear him talk about the story line that he's creating, and how his empire is doing, and whether his heirs are plotting to kill him, and who he's trying to marry his heirs off to.
I like playing Castle Crashers and Child of Light with him. He usually carries both of us from level to level, but it's a lot of fun to do with him!
aTweetingBird 11y ago
That's so great! And very sweet to keep him supplied with snacks and drinks.
mousehaus 11y ago
Oh my goodness, yes to Crusader Kings! It's really the only game I love playing too. The new expansion pack comes out tomorrow and promises to add (even) more devious plotting haha.
two_true 11y ago
If I'm interested in this game, should I get Crusader Kings complete? I noticed there is a Crusader Kings 2, but it's $40, as compared to $10

I eat on time. Seriously, that's my small but big thing. I'll eat during the day because I'll get hungry. But often, I get caught up in work and suppress the urge to eat, then forget I was hungry and then feel ill later in the day and remember I haven't eaten for hours. Since we are apart for a couple weeks, my job is to carry out his "care and feeding" until I go back and that means eating when I'm freaking supposed to. So small yet so huge. My CO shouldn't have to worry if I'm following orders when he isn't with me and so, it helps us both out!
PhantomDream09 11y ago
Can you re-phrase your comment and clarify what you mean?
Right now it seems that you are saying "I remember to feed myself when I'm away from my SO" which doesn't make sense.
StingrayVC 11y ago
I think she means that her SO has told her she must eat on time, so while he is away, she is making sure to follow him on this, even though he isn't home to make sure she is doing it.
That way, he doesn't have to worry about her.
blonde_locks 11y ago
Thank you so much for explaining what I meant.
blonde_locks 11y ago
The way StingrayVC explained is exactly what I meant. If I eat on time, I don't get sick and he doesn't need to be concerned about me. So, my job, in being his first mate is to eat on time, even when he isn't here, so he can do what he needs to do without worrying about me.
PhantomDream09 11y ago
Do you get sick often/easily? When you say "eat on time" do you mean "eat regularly" (on a schedule, for example: breakfast, lunch, and dinner)?
blonde_locks 11y ago
Eat regularly and on schedule 3-5 meals a day is what I meant. When I skip meals, my stomach has to be tenderly coaxed into accepting the food because the urge to upchuck it is strong. It is completely avoidable if I eat on time. I don't get sick often or easily if I just remember to prioritise eating over whatever super important thing I'm doing.
PhantomDream09 11y ago
I guess I'm not understanding how eating to maintain your health/energy is connected to being a good First Mate. Eating and drinking are basic things every person has to do in order to survive. It shouldn't have any connection to another person (to put it another way, you should be eating to keep up your health, not as a duty to your SO). Have you struggled with any eating disorders previously? I wonder if there's some part of the equation that I'm missing, because this still doesn't make sense to me.
blonde_locks 11y ago
It's nothing as bad as perhaps I poorly worded it. I have had no eating disorders. I eat. I eat well. Most days I eat regularly like any other normal human. He just know that, if I'm working on a project, I forget. And the enthusiasm for it will pull me to complete the work rather than break for food. On those days, since we've discussed that me being sick for perfectly avoidable reasons doesn't make sense, I deliberately break to eat then go back to work. It isn't sinister at all.
PhantomDream09 11y ago
I wasn't trying to suggest that it was sinister - it just seemed odd to me. I understand completely about getting wrapped up in a project/work and forgetting to take breaks. I do the same thing at times, and it can extend to staying up all night when my schedule is particularly hectic. Thank you for the explanation(s). I just never looked at the issue through the lens of "I do this in an effort to be a good First Mate" but if it works for you and helps - that's great.
:0)
blonde_locks 11y ago
I think of it this way. Would it matter to me? Not really. I'd just eat after I'm done and take Tums. Does it matter to him? Yes. So, I do it "for" him.
