To the single women on here: How many of you actually, genuinely enjoy dating? If so, can you describe your experiences?
I struggle with it a lot. Maybe I am shy. I don't know, so I am looking for advice. Sometimes I wish there would be a timer to cut it short so that the conversation wouldn't drag on and on. Even if I like the person, I just feel overwhelmed. Second and third dates are even worse because that's when they usually try to kiss me and I don't feel comfortable getting physical yet.
Can anyone else relate? Maybe there is something I can do to calm the nerves.... ?
Any input and advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

Econo_miser 9y ago
Um, what? You clearly like the person if you are going on three dates together, but you don't feel comfortable even kissing them? This doesn't sound like a problem with dating. This sounds like a problem with repression. You should probably go talk to a licensed therapist about this and work out your issues.
Also, if the conversation is boring, just excuse yourself and leave. It's not that big of a deal provided you are following basic common sense safety for dating.
Landry86 9y ago
By the way... I went out with a guy the other day who I have been knowing for a while and I actually can't wait to kiss him :) thanks for your help.
Landry86 9y ago
Excuse yourself and leave if the conversation is boring?
Maybe it's where I'm from but that seems a little rude... lol
Econo_miser 9y ago
Don't just jump up and be "BYE FELICIA!"
Provided you are making an honest attempt at conversation and connection, if after 15-30 minutes you don't have anything to talk about, it's time to bail. "Jim Bob, it was nice to meet you, but I need to get going." It's not rude at all.
Landry86 9y ago
I would give it an hour ;-)
And in my case it would be "Bye Fernando" ;)
Econo_miser 9y ago
An hour is pretty generous, but you do you.

You seem really sweet! This is great advice. Always awesome to get perspective from the other gender. It is really not that bad to be a girl lol. My challenges stem from my introversion and not my gender, but I get what you mean! It really DOES take a lot of energy out of me to get to know a new person. Someone that nobody in my friends group knows, that my family has never met before, etc.
I always do whatever I can to be polite on a date, and if I am not interested, I will voice that in the softest way I can without leading them on. I just feel bad because usually it's a quality guy that just doesn't click with me for whatever reason....and I do explain that also.

Being shy isn't the same thing as "stringing someone along" and if I'm going on a second date it means I def want to. It's the first date I dread because you don't know if you're going to like the person or not
Anyway, I posted this about a week ago and I hung out with a man I have been knowing for a long time this weekend and we like each other and I'm actually looking FORWARD to kissing him. So I guess the burden of having to get to know someone new doesn't apply to me anymore but thanks for your help

Landry86 9y ago
I found that guy after posting this. No offense but you're not really paying attention to anything I am saying and you keep obsessing over concepts that don't apply to me
I am VERY shy and have difficulty interacting in new social situations. It's as simple as that and has nothing to do with not WANTING to date. I TOLD you I have BEEN KNOWING this guy that I like for a while now so why on earth would I be shy around him?
Also being shy on a first date is totally normal. And actually, if you ask almost any girl, many will say the same thing... guys are like that too in fact. A lot of people in general just don't like first dates. I posted this to see if anyone had tips/hints/whatever to IMPROVE my dating abilities. I live in a small town where I have a thousand friends and family members so seeking approval and validation from strangers on Reddit? Yeah, that is not happening.
You seemed really sweet and helpful at first but now you are just coming across as the type of person who is looking for reasons to fight with little girls on the internet.
Also, getting up and leaving in the middle of a date is very rude. Like I said, I am from a small town and proper etiquette is VERY important here because word can get around pretty quickly that you are a rude person. Also, I just couldn't do that to someone. I would rather do the right thing and just talk to them about why it probably won't work out

I am not an introvert. I am not shy. I am not at all afraid of dating and being alone...
However, I HATE dating.
HATE IT.
After college, where the hell do you meet people? How do I know you're not a psycho?
You are not alone in this.
Have you considered having a friend "Set you up" then double dating? May take much of the pressure off.
Landry86 9y ago
A double date is a really good idea! I'll try that!
RubyWooToo 9y ago
I think you don't enjoy dating because you're treating it like an interview. If you focus on having fun and enjoying someone's company, it will take off a lot of pressure.
Also, if you're really attracted to someone, what is wrong with a kiss? Not every kiss has to lead to sex or even heavy petting. If you're not going to let a guy kiss you after the 2nd or 3rd date, he will assume you're not interested. And who knows, maybe you haven't been yet.
Landry86 9y ago
I'm not sure what is wrong with the kiss. I am attracted but I just don't want to yet
Wissenschaft85 9y ago
Physical touch is very important for having intimate feelings, both in men and women. Theres nothing wrong with waiting till the 2nd and 3rd date for a kiss but I'll agree that most guys are going to assume your not attracted to them if you won't allow a kiss. If so, perhaps your just not into any guy yet.
Landry86 9y ago
Thanks so much for the feedback. Yeah, maybe that is it and I just don't realize I'm not that into him. Lol dating is a pain!
the_baumer 9y ago
Hated it most of the time. I'm shy, very introverted. Most of the men were nice and sweet, but the whole process is anxiety inducing. Wondering if you like them as much as they like you, making sure you don't come off as weird or clingy. I love being in a relationship over being single hands down.
scallopkid 9y ago
I know I hated it! It's just kind of a weird way to interact with a person. I think humans are designed to meet people mostly through our social networks and communities, which gives us time to interact in a group setting first. That's hard to replicate for a lot of people after college though.
My suggestions would be a.) day time dates where you can have plans later that do create an end time for your date, like meeting up with with a friend or something. I think it works best to set this expectation with the guy when you're planning the date, don't bail on him abruptly. b.) dates that somehow mimic a group setting and make you feel less like you're one on one. Probably a class or casual sport.

It seems like "grab a coffee" is the day time equivalent, which in my experience seemed to end itself less awkwardly, because if you meet at say, 11am, then you talk for a couple hours and are both like "ok, I have other stuff I have to do today."
Honestly though I feel like I still never got the hang of dating, I just escaped from it. You might learn more from people who enjoy it.
Landry86 9y ago
haha that made me laugh. Yes it is the day-time equivalent
VigilantRedRooster 9y ago
I'm an introvert so don't adore social interaction in its own right. Two things I've done to make my dating funnel more efficient and cut down on long dates that go nowhere.
In business, if you're super busy all the time, RAISE YOUR PRICES AT ONCE! Same applies with dating: if you're overwhelmed with first dates, raise the bar. I write dating site profiles that are longer and more polarizing than average, in order to meet a smaller number of better matches in person.
I like to schedule a "Zeroth Date" early in the getting to know process. Something quick and noncommittal to meet face to face in person, usually over a smoothie. If it's a dud, it cuts the losses. If it's promising, it sets the stage for an official first date, which can still be at the same measured pace toward intimacy as without the initial meeting.

Landry86 9y ago
True, I guess the real advice would come from someone who has actually landed someone, but both perspectives can be good
teaandtalk 9y ago
I think I was mostly questioning VRR's status as a woman (which he is not).
VigilantRedRooster 9y ago
I literally wrote the book on male participation on this sub as part of my mission to help rebuild it after the old mod team tore this place up and trolled at least two new female mods into quitting.
I don't pop in very often now, but if the sub wants to go full Briffault's Law on me it shouldn't be a problem.
teaandtalk 9y ago
Ooh, went green on me. Male participation is, of course, fine, but this was a targeted question about the female experience.
Landry86 9y ago
ohhhhh lol
radioactivities9 9y ago
You are not listening to the signs in yourself that say ''I'm not into this man.'' Wish I had been able to myself in the past.
You should be really wanting him to kiss you by the third date or so. That's a good way to tell if you like him.
I found dating exciting when I was in my early 20's. Then not so much. Men decided I'd do because I was a woman and attractive enough by their standards. That's what I was beginning to think was out there to settle for. But then I met my hero. I knew fairly early I'd be crazy about him (didn't rush to tell him that of course lol). I think a lot of women can say so!
Hollyburn 9y ago
I'm so glad I'm not the only one who encountered this. I was starting to think it was part of some TRP revolution where men are no longer interested in women for anything other than their bodies because they can get companionship and friendship and all the other good -ship's from their (male) friends.
Landry86 9y ago
Thank you for this perspective!
I never thought of it that way, yeah... I haven't felt like I want to kiss anyone yet. It's just hard for a very conservative woman to engage in such behaviors because to most people sex on the third date is just normal, so they probably think I'm weird
[deleted] 9y ago
I used to hate dating but I learned to like it. It's really fun to get to know someone. The key is to focus on your date and not how you're looking or acting. Listening is a very attractive quality. You could also try learning non-verbal communication, body language etc once you get over your fears.
If you haven't read How to make friends and influence people by Dale Carnegie, then READ IT! It changed how I interact with people.
tempintheeastbay 9y ago
This is great advice! I looove dating and I think the reason is that I really focus on the other person. There's always something fascinating about them! Maybe it's their job, or a trip they took, or just their perspective on the world and how they tell a story. I find that by focusing on them, like you say, I feel so much less self-conscious.
One thing I remind myself of, is that most people rarely get truly truly listened to. All day everyone who chats with them is usually half distracted, on their phones, or in a hurry. Attention is a real gift. And warm attention even more so! It's not that hard IMHO to be a good date; find something about what they're saying to be sincerely excited about, and listen with warm enthusiasm & through a positive lens. Framing it like that makes me less nervous!
vanBeethovenLudwig 9y ago
It depends on my mood to be honest. If I'm in a social and charming mood, I enjoy it and I enjoy the attention. If I'm tired or a bit depressed then of course I loathe it. What I really hate about dating is I don't know if I can trust that person and it's difficult to tell sometimes.
[deleted] 9y ago
I did until I realize most men these days that aren't useless at life have way too many options and know it. So they don't have a real incentive to get into a relationship until much, much older. In big cities.
beautifulbarbarian 9y ago
I was never comfortable with online dating. I did some online dating a few years ago when I was supposedly in my prime (early 20s), and I knew I was attractive, so you'd think it would be fun and comfortable. I never felt comfortable. I felt extremely insecure about what they would think of me. I would also feel nervous because I didn't know what to expect from a guy or what he would try to do, so I was constantly watching for warning signs. The guys often tried to kiss me or take me back to their place way too fast for my comfort. I never felt a genuine connection with anyone and just wanted to get out of there and go back to my comfort zone.
Conversely though, I absolutely loved dating men I knew through some kind of community. Either through my classes, clubs, groups or friends, part time work, volunteer groups, etc. The key there was that I already knew who they were before we went on a date. I could relax around them and not be so on the edge the whole time. I also found that if we met each other through some activity we both enjoy or through school, we had a lot to talk about.
It's even better if you don't call it a "date" the first few times, but just spend some time hanging out one on one and getting to know each other (with the possibility of a romantic relationship in mind). That's actually how most of my relationships started, and it was great.
Edit: added some details
Landry86 9y ago
Thanks for the input! I would def prefer to meet someone in the same group of friends as I but this town is not that big and most people are married off.
soviette- 9y ago
I don't like dating - especially if I have a few people pining after me at the same time - it always seems that they invest in me before I've invested in them.
I think I might have a different experience next time around now that I know what I'm looking for in a relationship, instead of maneuvering blindly like I did in my teens/early 20's.
AndyKane 9y ago
I'm single, and I loathe dating lol. It's such a cumbersome process of playing hard to get, pretending to be super busy, and more phony behavior that's suppose to make you more desirable. I'm pretty much a loner, so once a man passes the tests...I want to get this relationship started. Unfortunately in the manosphere, LTR is equivalent to prison :(
Wissenschaft85 9y ago
As a man, I say the best thing you can do is cut out the game. Be direct in what you want from a relationship. Literally say what you just wrote here. You don't like playing hard to get and that sex should mean the relationship has become serious and intimate. The men who want to settle down at a young age will appreciate such direct honesty. They are also frustrated by the games they have to play with a lot of young women who "just want to have fun, nothing serious".
My own parents dated only for 6 months and have been married for 42 years. They made their goals clear from the start, get married and have kids. There was no need for playing hard to get or any other game.
AndyKane 9y ago
Thanks for the insight :) it seems like I keep meeting men that are afraid of commitment, and not just young men in their 20's either...It's kind of frustrating :/
Wissenschaft85 9y ago
Thats the nature of the society we live in today which has made promiscuous behavior far too acceptable while also having a marriage system that is view as pure punishment with no benefit by men.
This is why we need to make the Marriage laws fair for both genders, if that was the case then far more men would be willing to get married. After all, that was the case for the vast majority of human history.
cinemadoll137 9y ago
Exactly this. I'm in uni and that's the game, unfortunately. It's hard to meet men with their values aligned.
missjulie94 9y ago
What I'm struggling with now is that I just got my first full time job out of school, and I work so many hours. When I get home I just want to sleep and I'm pretty cranky. I want to so badly be in a relationship but I have no time/energy to date :(

Landry86 9y ago
It's pretty awful. I'm not going to lie... I look young for my age. It was my birthday yesterday and my girlfriend who is a little younger than me asked if I botox or something lol. I have younger men (even almost a decade younger) than I approach me often. I don't like the predicament because I WANT someone older, like in the 35-50 range but those never approach me because I think they are afraid of appearing creepy. I'm starting to feel sterilized at this point :(
kekerae 9y ago
My last first date was the day I met my now husband but I was so ridiculously nervous before that date that I would say I probably wouldn't have enjoyed going on a lot of dates. I certainly enjoyed the process once we had been on a couple dates and the nerves were gone, though. That's a really fun getting to know you, butterfly's in the tummy, crazy sexual tension phase, haha.
brattykids123 9y ago
out of interest, when was the first kiss? the first time You slept together?
kekerae 9y ago
Our first kiss was at the completion of our second date. Second date was supper out and a walk and he kissed me at my car. We actually didn't have intercourse for about 3 or 4 weeks until we had discussed that we were exclusive. I'd only slept with one person prior to him so sex was a pretty big deal to me.
HobbesTheBrave 9y ago
You're fine. In public speaking; If you're not nervous about this speech, as you are before and during every other speech, then this you shouldn't open your mouth. If you're not high on stage-fright, you don't have anything important or meaningful to say.
Dating with the goal of being happily married, it's been called the 'most important interview of your life'. So if you're worried, stressed, hopeful, scared, intrigued, and every other emotion which signals 'THIS IS IMPORTANT TO ME!', then you're well and sane and healthy.
Go see a doctor, if you're not feeling everything at the same time, because this is important, and you ought to feel something about dating.
Landry86 9y ago
Thank you for this perspective!
Yes, I definitely feel a lot about dating... maybe even too much
perrierwoof 9y ago
This comment is really funny to me because I'm a performer (as my job). I can easily put on an act and be extremely charming. It lures a lot of guys in but then I have a difficult time figuring out what I want, and also at the same time they figure out that I'm not so charming 24/7 and I need a lot of down time. Not sure if other people are like this dating, putting their best self forward then having to transition into their normal personalities. Maybe I'm mentally ill.
smirk_addict 9y ago
I'm exactly the same way. I'm good at connecting to people and I can be the life of the party. But I'm actually an introvert. I need time to recharge. And if I'm around people 24/7 I feel suffocated. Like you, I can be charming with people and still be on the fence about how much I like them. Then they see the other side of you and tell you that you are "distant". Really just want to be in my head for awhile.
Landry86 9y ago
I am kind of like this too. I was taught by family members how to be a hostess because it is important in our family and it is a southern tradition. I enjoy it, but I also get tired
perrierwoof 9y ago
Thus is exactly that! Are you INFJ? Our personality type says that we can be people person but then shut down and friends are confused because they've seen our charming friendly side. Sometimes I actually don't know how to talk to people just a "normal" conversation because I'm so used to being "on."
CheGuerra42 9y ago
The world can be a confusing place.
I may just be a bot, but I hope you have a good day! If you think I am annoying, send me a PM!
Landry86 9y ago
I want to appear genuine. I don't want to "lure" anyone and I don't want to put on an "act"
perrierwoof 9y ago
I understand. I don't try to lure anyone on purpose, it's just how I am, unfortunately. I guess I can't really help then. Just be yourself if you want to be genuine.
kekerae 9y ago
I think I know what you mean. I'm like my father in that I have the gift of the gab and I can be incredibly charming. I can easily maintain eye contact, smile, make jokes that get people laughing. It's not really an "act" because it's something that comes pretty natural to me but it's certainly not my day to day personality. It comes out in certain interview settings, dinner parties, etc.
perrierwoof 9y ago
Yes exactly this!
smirk_addict 9y ago
It honestly just sounds like you have game. But you've just chosen to use your powers for good.
