I have been seeing a high RMV male lately.
-Very attractive (beautiful smile and eyes). I also love his hair because he doesn't glue it in place with gel or anything stupid like that; it just kind of flows. I love the way he dresses. It's tasteful but not over-the-top/hipster/anything gay-looking. Very masculine. And he def. has the tall, dark and handsome thing going on. All of that topped with the sexiest southern accent I've ever heard in my life
-He's stable: seems happy and calm, loves his career as a petroleum engineer, older than me (and I know most of you already know about my hang-up with younger men)
-Not boring and highly intelligent, and direct: instead of the typical boyish "can I kiss you" "do you want to get ice cream" "can I walk you to your car" I normally get when seeing someone new he just does things without asking (I think it's sexy as anything). I am very quiet, shy, introverted and have a lot of trouble communicating with men. Either I get bored of them or they get bored of me, but with this one... we could talk, goof off, and play around all day
This post has a point. I'm not done bragging yet.
-Stays off social media and doesn't text me a zillion times a day because he is a grown up with responsibilities and not a little baby
-No beta traits: more of an alpha/sigma. He's very direct, does whatever he wants, and seems unafraid of truth-telling
-Amazing kisser. I could kiss him all day. A couple months ago I made a post about how much I hate kissing new men I'm dating because it makes me feel uncomfortable... but with him. Wow. I could kiss him forever!
Okay, so this has two points:
-
At what point do you accept someone as "captain"? I'm falling for this person hard and it scares me. I haven't felt this way in years
- (out of curiosity) what is a high RMV male to you personally? what traits does he possess?
Thanks, Landry
***disclaimer: (edited for clarification) and for the purpose of staying on topic: my relationship status is mostly a joke and indicative for my love of sigmas. I am different from most RPW in that I have no desire for settling for a beta for I may be bored to death and feel unprotected. Yes, being with a man who is too alpha has its issues, but I'm not in love with Gammas like everyone else is. Sigmas are my thing. From personal experience, they're usually smarter. They're not necessarily always the relationship-type of guy but some of them are. It's a rare find and no, they aren't always serial killers
This is a good blog for helping you understand:
http://daxgray.com/what-is-a-sigma-male/
Sigmas are more independent than alphas. They are almost always in monk mode and don't usually let women into their lives but can be very good mates because of their honesty. Some are good. Some are bad. Some are monogamous romantics and others are plate-spinners. A good sigma (to me) is legitimate captain material. They enter monogamous relationships because they WANT to as opposed to societal or other outside pressures forcing it to happen.

RubyWooToo 9y ago
Where are the RMV traits? Everything you listed is based on sexual attraction.
RMV traits are things like:
As for when to accept him as Captain... at the bare minimum, it's after you've thoroughly vetted him and both agreed to be monogamous.
Landry86 9y ago
...and by the way I don't view men on an SMV-basis because I don't sleep around.
"well... I sure would bang him but I'll never marry him" said no RPW ever
RubyWooToo 9y ago
Except your entire post is about SMV and not RMV, whether you recognize that or not. Since your question was explicitly about RMV, I thought it was relevant to point that out.
Regardless, to say that SMV is irrelevant is either naive or disingenuous. Without sexual attraction, it's impossible to capture or maintain interest and passion.
Landry86 9y ago
Clearly, I am both sexually interested and relationship interested. I did not feel the need to state the obvious: "oh, by the way, he shows up on time and doesn't beat me or anything"
Everything you listed as an RMV is such a deal-breaker to me that I wouldn't even give a guy a second date if they didn't have those qualities.
RubyWooToo 9y ago
OK, so what are the other RMV qualities that your guy has? My list was just relevant examples, not exhaustive.
You're the one asking the question, and I'm just trying to provide the feedback you asked for.
Landry86 9y ago
Stable household growing up I guess would be another one. Fond of traditional gender roles. Wants to settle down in the same town I do. Likes my pets

"fiercly protective" "supports your feminine endeavors" "reinforces your good"
yes. yes. and yes!
WhoWasBlowjob 9y ago
Can being possessive be a good thing for a man, of course not over the top, but letting her know she is yours?
[deleted] 9y ago
It is a requirement. If he is not posessive, he doesn't care anymore.
WhoWasBlowjob 9y ago
Okay, I am dating a girl who seems to naturally be rpw, I'm her 2nd ever partner, I am fucking it up good though, I book marked your comment btw, it's a good list, I meet most of the checks but some of the important ones I'm lacking
I'm only 23 but after sleeping around for 4 years and not finding any connection with over 30 women, I can't let the one girl who's captured my heart go, I would not be in this situation if I didn't slip a couple of times though..
[deleted] 9y ago
There are a lot of rpm relationship advice and podcasts out there.
1nfidel23 9y ago
Interest and passion can be maintained for only so long regardless of looks/smv/rmv.
RubyWooToo 9y ago
Not necessarily. In a good relationship, partners find ways to keep the fires stoked in a relationship. It just takes more effort than it did in the beginning.
Landry86 9y ago
Staying focused helps also. And a lot of people demand more attention from their lover than they actually need and it drains the other person.
I had a friend who went through a rough divorce because she "felt like she wasn't getting enough attention". Quite the little smotherer too. She was even kind of possessive of me as a friend so I don't even want to know what she was like with her husband behind closed doors.
Anyway, the house was always a disgusting pigsty and she didn't pay enough attention to her kids and couldn't cook. Lots of people are like this. They don't focus on their families and homes and they're lazy. No wonder there's so many "issues" in long-term relationships

Again happens because the initial flame has gone out, after a certain point it becomes a chore, hence the need to stoke the flames and try to keep it going. I guess iM having trouble understanding what's in it for a high Smv/RMV to Lock himself down to Just one chick with who he will get bored of eventually anyway, specially if he has other options
Landry86 9y ago
Usually, yeah. But I know a lot of older couples who "made it". It takes work but for some reason there's passion there even after 30+ years
That or it's the alcohol. haha
1nfidel23 9y ago
Yes that sounds like winning the lottery. Exception to the rule doesnt disprove the rule. These days it's about instant validation And instant gratification. Chances of having that's kind of relationship are slim to none. So real you why would a high smv male do that when's he could keep his options open
Landry86 9y ago
Because you do not know what my SMV is. Why would you? I'm just a name and a description. No picture. No nothing
Landry86 9y ago
Well he has all that too of course. I just didn't list those things because they seemed too obvious.
RubyWooToo 9y ago
Since your question is about RMV, and what constitutes an high RMV man, then those qualities are very relevant to your post.
Landry86 9y ago
I guess we are similar:
“doesn’t text me a zillion times a day” “I could kiss him all day”
2.Honesty and integrity
“unafraid of truth-telling” “direct”
3.Compatible values/moral outlook
Since we’re talking and bonding, goofing off, and playing all day long, yeah, I’d say we are very compatible. And who would even give an immoral person the time of day? Same thing with “reliable”
4.Intelligent and hard worker
“engineer” “highly intelligent”
5.Stable, not reckless. When he needs to take a risk, the cost/benefit is carefully calculated.
“he’s stable. Seems happy and calm”
Looks like they aren't much different from yours when you read between the lines. I mostly posted this to explore other RPW relationships, what they are like, if they are happily married, and especially at what point did they accept their captain. I want to make sure that I DO NOT move too fast
This man gives me gina tingles. Something I have not experienced in a long time
akanachan 9y ago
I find that being childfree changes the whole "game" significantly, allowing me to be more long-term compatible with a man with almost no "beta" traits, because he doesn't need to be domesticated for fatherhood. He's "Master" to me, instead of "Captain" :p
Maybe this makes me non-RPW, I don't know.
The most important traits I look for in a life partner are flexibility, creativity, optimism, consistency, gratitude for things most people take for granted (things most people feel entitled to), and passion for self-improvement. These are traits I also bring to the proverbial table, so I won't settle for less.
I consider things like "honesty, intelligence, common sense" to be "minimal requirements, before I even consider someone as a friend". Compatibility is necessary for a relationship, but for a life partner, you (general "you") need a little more than just compatibility, otherwise you'd only last 6 or 7 years of living together before the stagnation sets in, especially if you don't have children to keep you busy and distracted.
vanBeethovenLudwig 9y ago
These are traits that are attractive to me as well but we don't hear about them as often...!
Landry86 9y ago
Not sure a "beta father" is a great idea either
"Guess what? I married daddy because he has beta male characteristics"
Not happening.
noheaking 9y ago
It's the difference between a stay-at-home dad and an *absentee dad. A straight beta father is a better bet than a straight alpha father.
Landry86 9y ago
I think what I'm saying is that I don't like either one.
noheaking 9y ago
Fair enough ????
akanachan 9y ago
One of the "beta" characteristics (according to TRP) is being a good provider, so I imagine that's a basic requirement of a responsible father, especially if the mother is a traditional homemaker.
Other "beta" traits are a willingness to compromise, give emotional support/validation/reassurance -- all traits that would be necessary to maintain a healthy family environment, I imagine (I imagine, because I did not grow up in such an environment).
Either way, these are not traits I'm interested in :p But that's just me.

teaandtalk 9y ago
I don't think there's much point arguing about characteristics, Landry seems to have decided that beta = weak/stupid, 'not a real man' and alpha = strong/stupid.
Landry86 9y ago
This is why I like sigmas. Because they can be providers too (as long as they're willing-some aren't "family men" and I get that). I like sigmas because they're usually smarter. It's easier to hold a conversation with them and develop a bond. I don't even respect betas because they aren't real men. I don't respect stupid chest-pounding alphas either.
There shouldn't be any "compromising" go on when the captain is in charge and everyone understands their role and stays out of each other's business. My future husband WILL NOT mommy my kids and I refuse to work a meaningless job while neglecting my children at daycare
Also that first link provided was a poor definition of beta. They forgot to leave out the fact that the reason betas become betas in the first place is because they are less desirable to women. Women who engage in LTRs with one of these often get bored of them.
akanachan 9y ago
Alpha/beta/sigma/etc are all only useful terms for character traits, and less useful when describing a person, IMO. I mean, most descriptors in your "Sigma Male" link describes me.. lol
Personally, I find men with lots of beta traits (not "beta men", per se) to be prone to stagnating.
The dating phase is when they go all-out to "win your love", then when they have "won" it, they expect you to hang around like a piece of furniture they won at an auction, and be content about it.
They don't want to put any effort in making the relationship grow or evolve.
If you bring it up as an issue, they'd just ask questions that are the equivalent of "what can I do to make you happy?", because they think doing "hard work" to "make you happy" will make you love them.
This post about "The Male Romantic Fantasy" was pretty popular on reddit not too long ago, and describes that "hard work" = "get love" mindset : https://www.reddit.com/r/AskMen/comments/3z8o75/why_dont_men_get_as_much_of_a_thrill_over/cyk7gr8/?context=3
My guy's approach to love/relationship is to simply be himself, do what he wants to do, and leave it to me to decide if I can love who he is by default. He also leaves it to me to decide how to adjust my life to "fit in" with his life without either of us "compromising" who we are/what we want.
Definitions and labels have always been mildly confusing to me.
Landry86 9y ago
I don't view love in the same way others do. It's not as emotional and more animalistic: who would make a good mating partner?
Sweep me off my feet? Meh...whatever
The guy I'm seeing makes me feel funny feelings but he also makes a lot of sense in other ways and I see him as a bit of a sigma if I had to put him in a category
teaandtalk 9y ago
Intelligence isn't dependent on alpha/beta/'sigma' traits.
Landry86 9y ago
No, but from personal experience, sigmas strike me as the smartest.
tempintheeastbay 9y ago
Although it's fun to chat about, I don't think men are "alpha/beta/sigma". I think men have alpha/beta/etc. traits or behave in an alpha/beta/etc. way in certain situations. To echo something someone else said, virtually no one has NO alpha/beta/etc. traits or NEVER has those behaviors. For instance, men who can't accept others' leadership at work will have a really difficult time with most careers - and even men who work for themselves usually must put on a patient, indulgent face when dealing with clients or customers.
Phrases like "I like X type" or "I will never settle for a Y type" or even "Z type are smarter" to me don't make a lot of sense. Men aren't Pokemon. They aren't just one type.
Landry86 9y ago
You're probably right regarding the traits. I do feel as though most men only fall into one of these "categories" because they favor the traits of one over the others. Every man is a pie chart.
For me, it's more about whether or not the man is a "buck":
Reference: "alpha fux, beta bux" (the notion that women sleep with alphas but use betas for providership)
There also exists an "alpha buck" (like a Donald Trump)- I prefer these over the "beta buck". They're less common but I don't like the idea of marrying a beta as I have had several issues with them in the past
I get the feeling that this guy I'm seeing is a rare "sigma buck".
I like it.
run_the_trails 9y ago
I was enjoying the sigma male article until I got to the weight lifting section. It seems like it's popular for proclaimed self help experts to suggest pumping the iron. There are plenty of men who never go to the gym that are very aggressive.
A lot of guys overcompensate with the gym. Their personality and career suffer and they can never figure out why.

Landry86 9y ago
Everyone here is pro-beta and it doesn't make any sense. Then I see all these posts titled "how can I get my husband to be more alpha"
Seriously?
I'd rather be alone forever than marry a beta.
[deleted] 9y ago
Same here. Finally someone who gets it! And it's as much for the guy as for me. I KNOW I'd be tempted to cheat/branch swing if I was with a beta so why would I put myself in that position? I'd much rather wait til I find someone I would actually want
[deleted] 9y ago
This. Long term, betas do not hold up.
Landry86 9y ago
Yes. They're too passive
