Hello
I'm not a religious woman by any means but today is ash Wednesday which signifies the start of Lent. This is a 6 week period through Easter Sunday where you give up something in penance.
IE ice cream, swearing, wearing sweats, or something that for you would be hard.
I thought this might be a good idea to finally do something that maybe you keep pushing off til tomorrow that can help with your girl game. Well I'm calling you out today lol.
For these next six weeks, I am giving up swearing. I am a truck driver potty mouth and I want to work on this. So I'm giving it up. 40 days of a lot of shizzles and fudges being thrown around but it'll really make me realize how much I swear and maybe even ultimately get me to finally stop swearing and talking like a lady.
So ladies... Anyone like to join me? what would you give up?
Edit: or if you are doing Lent, what are you giving up.

Lent is a special time of year for me, and this year I put a lot of thought into what I was going to do and why.
I'm following page with daily devotionals and doing some freewriting on my blog about the daily topic. I'm also reading through Timothy Keller's book Prayer, and it turns out to be about 7 pages a day.
In order to effectively do all that, I'm not logging into Facebook or Instagram. It's really a hamster wheel that I'm jumping off of, and even only 4 days into this, I feel so much better every day.
Another reason for avoiding those apps too is so that the topics I bring up with my husband don't center around "Oh, did you see what so-and-so posted? SO DUMB..." and the like.
I'm looking forward to where I'll be 36 days from now.

Chocolate :( tough, but doable

Oh man. I know that I would probably go insane. lol :)

I'm giving up dumb app games and cutting internet time down even further than I already have (its been my main goal this year). So limiting myself to 20 minutes of computer time per day (apart from having Facebook open as it's the only way my family overseas can contact me, but no mindless scrolling thru the news feed allowed).
So bye ladies!!

I'm Jewish, but I'm observing Lent this year.
I'm giving up sweets. All sweets. Fruits, berries, sugar (I already stay away from sugar), Splenda, stevia, you name it. If it satiates my sweet tooth I'm staying away!! My man is doing the same. We are both trying to get in shape for our wedding.
Of course yesterday, as a last hurrah, we proceeded to purchase $30 worth of cakes, cookies and brownies and eat them while in front of the TV. I gained 5 pounds over Mardi Gras weekend and I am stewing in a pit of self-loathing. I should have gone home to California, but instead I ate everything and basically undid all the hard work I put in in January.

Just came from mass. I grew up in a very religious Irish Catholic family, and truth be told I like the ritual. Not exactly a believer, though.
I am giving up alcohol, and all social media. I'm going to keep a journal and every negative thought I have about myself I'm going to write it down and then write a response as to why it's not true and erase the original thought. No more complaining, and no more talking to my friends about the ex. No more feeling sorry for myself, damnit!
I would LIKE to give up smoking. But that will have to come next >:(

Right, after some discussion with /u/loandbehold , I'm going to do a 'no-buy' for Lent!
No buying anything that's not groceries or necessary household purchases for our new apartment (that includes cute kitchenware, oh no!)
[deleted] 10y ago
I gave up FB for Lent! I'm on it constantly and it annoys me. I'm seriously addicted, if I don't check it two or three times in an hour I get this needling thought in my head to check it until I do. It's ridiculous. So I figured I would use Lent to help me get rid of that addiction.
My oldest son, he's 7, he gave up his Pokemon cards and I think he's already feeling the pinch! :-) we'll see how long he lasts.

I gave up my Facebook in January - I just needed a couple of weeks where I didn't feel like I was playing catch up to everyone else... I haven't been back on apart from to stalk my friends ex at her request because he'd blocked her. I just feel so much happier in general which is stupid because it's just a website but it has such an awful affect!!

Giving up FB is a good idea. I find it only irritates me, then I say to myself not to check it. But then I get bored...why not check FB?! Then I get annoyed...rinse and repeat.
[deleted] 10y ago
I'm also giving up Facebook and Instagram. Trying to get that hamster wheel to turn less. ;)
[deleted] 10y ago
It's going to be so hard! I mostly just don't want my kids to see me on it all the time and I feel the addiction too. I don't like that. Good luck!

I gave up all my social media in November. FB, Instagram, Snapchat, etc. because, like you, if I didn't check it every half hour (or less!) I would be like "Must check Facebook!!!!". It was crazy and so pointless. I just saw the same stories over and over again, constantly compared how many "likes/comments" I had with other people, and just made me feel super vain in general. I have to say that I honestly feel better without it because I'm not in my head 24/7. I still get the twinge to check it now and then though! Good luck with your journey!

I'm glad to hear it can be done! I just bought stuff to decorate for Valentine's Day and had the urge to post about it but then I remembered.... Lol
classy_lassy23 10y ago
It does take some getting used to, for sure! You feel like you're missing out and that's what sucks you back into it all.
[deleted] 10y ago
Yeah I had a fb addiction too. I got rid of it totally because I was tired of seeing peoples stupid selfies and /r/iamverysmart quotes. lol I saw somewhere
I took it to heart and cut off fb for good. My family knows how to contact me if they need me.
[deleted] 10y ago
I seriously hate the daily selfies some people post. Like just get "I'm extremely self centered" tattooed on your forehead. My homeschooling community has a group on FB so I do need it to stay in the loop and to keep in touch with family that's far away etc but I'm not doing either of those things everyday, lol. Sometimes I'll be scrolling and scrolling and I realize, I'm not even enjoying what I'm doing, I just feel like this is what I should be doing. It's sick!
[deleted] 10y ago
just saw this on /r/funny lol
[deleted] 10y ago
Lol! That's funny! But also sad. I don't want to be one of those moms to my kids

Hmm this is good! I have to think about something. I am currently giving up alcohol and sweets until my birthday.
The alcohol part I am not sure if it counts, it's not really hard since I don't drink much anyway and I have done these ceasing periods before. But yesterday I had a hard time grocery shopping and looking longingly at a Lindt chocolate bar. It was calling my name and I had to leave it behind :c

The gif you linked didn't embed properly on my RES for some reason, but I know it's this one
It was exactly like that, I spent way too much time looking on that isle. It was a flavor I haven't tried so that made it extra sad for me!
[deleted] 10y ago
Yes it is that one. I should really take more time to find gifs to properly post them. Seems like I always have trouble with that specific site.

I got scolded the other day for baking too much. A's waistline is expanding again, so he is cutting me off. I'm going to support him and not have sweets myself while I'm out of the house or he is out of the house.
I'm expanding that to junk food. If it comes in a package or its wrapped in cellophane, it's a no go.
So if I didn't make it, or it didn't come from an actual restaurant (no fast food allowed!) Then I won't be consuming it.
[deleted] 10y ago
Oh that is a good one. Sweets is so hard to give up!
[deleted] 10y ago
I'll bite!!
Things I want to give up are the following:
[deleted] 10y ago
This is the hardest one!!!!
[deleted] 10y ago
it's the only reason i'm losing weight i think!! All those grains, while DELICIOUS, led to me bloating every day which just made me feel unsexy and unattractive overall. Now my stomach stays flat and its amazing.
I still get carbs but from vegetables and things. I'm not missing out on any macros.
[deleted] 10y ago
Yeah. /r/keto ftw!

Joining with the swearing -my man hates it. Ive cut down loads since I met him but with friends Im still like a trucker...and occasionally swear in front of my boys by accident. So I'm giving that up!! Great thread!!
[deleted] 10y ago
My kid is 15 but being around my SO's kids is hard cause I forget!! This is a major motivator.

I have never observed Lent before, so this should be interesting. I'm thinking that I will give up coffee/caffeinated tea for Lent. I've given up caffeine before and felt so much better, but got right back into it after a few months. I think I'm going to try again and hope that it sticks this time. At least I have a concrete goal associated with it. I know I always feel better when I don't drink it for a while (more clear-headed, not so grumpy, decrease in depression/anxiety), but it becomes so difficult to stop once I start drinking it again. After the worst of the withdrawal is over, the cravings are the second worst thing about caffeine "addiction". Not looking forward to it at all.
[deleted] 10y ago
OOO That is a good one!

So /u/cakeforallofyou brought up earlier that she was thinking about buying random stuff for Lent and it's such a good idea that I'm stealing it :)
I'm so awful at budgeting, it's definitely something I need to improve on - I have £6.05 to last me 2 weeks because I spent my money on a holiday to Iceland at the end of February. Which is super exciting but realistically I can't afford it... I think as part of that I'll start bringing lunch into uni/work as well to save some pennies, not that I have any to save!!
[deleted] 10y ago
Good luck!
