my $0.02 from a guy, I hate short hair on women. short here extinguishes is a lot of femininity, especially if you're skinny. IMO Justin Bieber looks more feminine than Emma Watson now she cut her hair.
a friend of mines wife cut her hair down to pixie cut. if it wasn't for her DD boobs you could mistake her for a 12 year old boy.

Although there are men who dig short hair (my younger brother is one, for example) the majority definitely prefer it long it seems.
Do any ladies with luscious long locks have any tips on growing hair out? Mine is well past my shoulders but I'd like it to be at least to my bra strap.
TempestTcup 10y ago
I drink a lot of bone broth & take biotin & gelatin. My hair used to be very thin & now, 2 years later, it is thick & long. My fingernails are really strong now, too.
The_Ringmistress 10y ago
My own hair is very long. About hip length. I.usually keep it up in a knot, but my husband prefers double braids or crowns.
I.do know a few men who preferred their wives hair to be short. Notably, they were all military men. Not sure what that says, just my anecdotal evidence.
TempestTcup 10y ago
Wow, mine is only to the middle of my back, but I'm kind of old; it just doesn't grow as fast, I think.
I didn't know my husband's preference for long hair until it started getting a few inches past my shoulder. I told him that if I had known, I would have grown it past my shoulders out a long time ago, lol!
TempestTcup 10y ago
I've been growing my hair our for the last couple of years & have also noticed a positive reaction from people around me & a fantastic reaction from my husband.

Like that fishtail braid? I've always thought those were fun.

My hair is to the middle of my back when wet and just past the shoulders when dry. I have very curly hair (think Minnie Driver) and when I wear it down long (when I was younger it was always short and just did not look good) I almost always get asked about it or compliments in public. My husband loves it. He cannot stand short hair on a woman, it' actually a major turn off for him. I do notice a different in treatment overall when my hair is down vs up, long vs short. I think what it comes down to is short/up means "severe" "business" and feels more formal, where down/long is very feminine and says "relaxed" and "open". I even notice in myself that I feel different when my hair is short/up or long/down.

ive been growing my hair out for several years now, its down to the small of my back and its thick and luxurious. i wear it up in edwardian pompadours for business, kind of like elaine in seinfeld. my husband LOVES my hair, hes always playing with it and stroking it. one thing ive noted about long hair styles is that they really appeared in the past to have required servants. i have been teaching myself victorian and edwardian styles and trying fancy braiding techniques, but i dont have a lot of art with it and i wish i could just have a handmaiden or two to help out!

Beautiful. I have learned my lesson. I have always kept my hair short and now I'm in the process of growing it out. I never really had a problem with it until it finally sank in that femininity is strongly connected to hair.
I'm getting hair extensions put in soon. As I see it, fake hair is better than no hair. Call it apart of my self-improvement strategy.

I have always been a short hair woman, I had some variation of a bob for more than a decade of life. A few years ago after I stopped dying my hair I decided to grow out my hair to donate it. Men love it and notice it, hell women love it and notice it. Not a ton of women have absolutely straight hair that won't curl, add to it rounded bangs and it really stands out.
Having had both long and short, I do get more attention with longer hair - but I don't really care, it's like getting attention for wearing a skirt. It is traditionally feminine, but that shouldn't define you as a person.
margerym 10y ago
I do think it says something that women get so much attention for being feminine. There was a time where that would have been like giving attention to the sky for being blue.
[deleted] 10y ago
I am really femme looking as it is, it makes no difference to me so I ignore it. If I get approached about my looks I am usually very short with people, because I really put a minimal effort into into (brush my hair and my teeth, make up for work only because women who wear make up to work make more than women who don't).
[deleted] 10y ago
no one said it should define you as a person, it recalibrates youre understanding of how attractive you really were with shorter hair and corroborates the traditional notion of what's attractive to men, as opposed to the abject lies women tell each other about whats attractive entirely without regard to male input.
[deleted] 10y ago
I really could give two shits what most people consider attractive. I grow my hair out so that I can donate it to women with cancer, it is just hair. Men and women both have scolded me for cutting my hair (just donated about a month ago).
My only consideration when it comes to my hair is how it will look as I advance my career. So my hair is my natural color, neatly trimmed, and usually pulled back for work. My male bosses have complemented as have my female coworkers, it is more about being neat and having nice hair than the length (just don't go for the super short mom do).
LFCaptain 10y ago
Does your hair grow quickly? I imagine it would have to for you to be able to donate it somewhat often.
[deleted] 10y ago
Yes. I am very healthy and it shows in my hair as well as my skin. I eat a high protein diet rich in vitamins for my weight lifting problem so my hair and nails grow like crazy.
Also not falling into common problems women have with damaging their hair through styling helps a lot. Wash, condition, brush, and air dry is all I do and everyone thinks it looks amazing.

Ladies, appreciate your hair!! Once you don't have it you realize how tied it is to your femininity.
I got really sick about four years ago and my hair suffered for it. I finally just got the last 'dead' bits cut off maybe two months ago. I've always had fine hair, but loads of it. I ended up with patches that were almost completely bald. Many tears were shed, its finally coming back nicely on the sides now. The top is still sad :'(
I've done the hair extensions and you are treated so differently. I've had temporary ones and permanent...I'd love to have them in again.
Could men weigh in on the 'fake hair' subject? Would it bother you or would you prefer your lady to have short hair if it weren't her own?
It's a huge expense, but I miss it so much...if people don't care how you get your long hair I'll be having a chat with my hair dresser.

What you must understand is that short hair is unattractive for two reasons.
The first is that long hair appears more feminine, and short hair more masculine. A very feminine-appearing woman might be able to get away with short hair, but long is better. Pixie cuts only look passable on women who look like pixies.
But the second, much more important, reason is that how much care you take with your appearance sends a message. It either says "I care about being attractive to you" or "I couldn't care less about what you want".
Thus, a woman who is bald from chemotherapy and a woman who shaves her head are two completely different prospects. Both run afoul of the first point. But the woman who voluntarily has short hair also fails the second. And that one is what we really care about.
A woman who will cut her hair short... doesn't care. A woman who doesn't care might stop wearing makeup. Might ditch the dresses for jeans and sweatshirts. Might let herself get fat. Might neglect to shave her legs. Might do all of the above.

I can't weigh in on extensions, but my hair used to be thin & fine & then I started making & drinking a lot of bone broth & my hair went nuts. It is really thick & it actually lost most of the gray & now I only have a few strands. Maybe it would help to get more gelatin in your diet?
LFCaptain 10y ago
Wow, I will definitely look in to that!
TempestTcup 10y ago
I forgot to mention that my nails were always really weak & now they are strong. It's nice because they always used to kind of shred & now they don't.
margerym 10y ago
I'm sorry to hear about your illness, LFCaptain. Is all well now?
LFCaptain 10y ago
Everything is much better thank you! Still have bad days but overall I'm fantastic by comparison lol.
My hair and nails have just been really slow to recover and I had a few setbacks. Nails are easy to keep if I stay up on it. For me it is worth having them done with shellac every few weeks. And my hair is better and getting better still.
margerym 10y ago
I had a bought of illness (in and out of the hospital) a while back and it also did a number on my hair, nails, and skin. For nails I have recently discovered using coconut oil on them a few times a day has made them 10x stronger and now they grow like crazy. I put on the coconut oil pretty much when I think about it throughout the day. I also use it on my hair.
LFCaptain 10y ago
I've heard some pretty amazing things about cooking with coconut oil too. There is a booth at my fav farmers market that sells it as as a semi-solid I think.
I'm going to try it and visit the butchers there to get the stuff I need to make bone broth as tempest suggested below. I'm told the coconut makes everything taste amazing haha.
TempestTcup 10y ago
I use coconut oil for everything:
As a supplement it is euphoric.
It is an anti-bacterial, fungal, biotic, etc.
Frying eggs in it, it is very slippery & yummy.
After a shower slather on wet skin.
Makes an excellent lube.
Great for a massage.
margerym 10y ago
Coconut oil and milk are truly amazing. Be sure to get the oil that is solid and liquifies when heated (virgin). It smells like coconuts and adds a great flavor to baked goods. I put it in my kids' oatmeal. Because I use it in my hair and on my hands I smell like coconut. Because I put it in my homemade body butter along with coco butter and almond oil I smell like an Almond Joy. My husband loves it!
LFCaptain 10y ago
Yes, I think that is what he has. I don't know if I can bake with it, gluten free is very delicate but I'll definitely find ways to use it!
margerym 10y ago
I have baked with it in GF recipes with great success! Pair it with coconut flour for extra yummyness.

I've only had my hair super short once, and absolutely hated it. I cut some damaged hair off over a year ago (just above my shoulders), and it's just now getting to a good length.
I'm at a loss as far as what to do with it, though... I have incredibly thick hair that won't keep a good curl. It's just sort of messily wavy. It's hot as all hell where I am, and the kids are grabby, so most days it's up in an octopus clip...
I've tried some updos, but the thickness makes it incredibly difficult. Any suggestions?
The_Ringmistress 10y ago
Emailing you tonight. House flooded which upset my social schedule. There'd plenty that can be done with your hair.
[deleted] 10y ago
Eek! No rush! Thanks :D
LFCaptain 10y ago
Do you ever go to a hair dresser to get a trim and have it thinned out or shaped?
They could do a lot to make it more comfortable and easier to manage without taking any real length
[deleted] 10y ago
I probably should more often. I've avoided a hairdresser lately, because I don't want it to get any shorter, but it's getting to the point where I would feel comfortable getting a trim. I've gotten it thinned a couple of times, but it didn't seem to help a whole lot... I don't think they thinned enough.
margerym 10y ago
If you haven't already stop shampooing it. I haven't used shampoo in a number of years. I clarify with baking soda and Castile soap (mixed) once a week and the rest of the time just massage conditioner into my scalp (it's called co-washing). This has made my hair so much more manageable and lighter. I also stopped using any styling products and just oil it with coconut oil. Be warned that stopping the shampoo it takes some time for both you and your hair to adjust to it. But my hair has never been lighter, stronger, shinier, nor has it ever grown this fast.
TempestTcup 10y ago
I tried that but it didn't work. I'll try it again. It wasn't pretty!
margerym 10y ago
The first few times I tried it it was awful. You really have to play around with what works. The baking soda and apple cider vinegar thing just did not work for me at all. It took me a few months to find something that worked well but when I did my hair changed dramatically.
TempestTcup 10y ago
Yeah, I was doing the baking soda ACV thing & it was awful. My main thing is that I do so much damage drying, etc that I just don't want to get my hair wet, so I'm trying different things to try to minimize washing. How often do you get your hair wet?
margerym 10y ago
I have to wet my hair every day. Eventually I will start using satin pillow cases and covers so I won't need to do this but for now my hair ends up frizzed and flat if I don't and it does not look good (as I said I have super curly hair and it's difficult to boot). I find that since I am only using baking soda once a week and oiling my hair daily (coconut mainly but I also use almond) that it has become soft and shinny. I know what you mean about damage as I use to dye and straighten my hair a lot. Shampooing daily also damaged it.
Have you heard of or tried dry no-pooing? I haven't tried it but it's essentially baking soda and some other things put on the hair dry and then brushed out to get rid of dirt and oil.
TempestTcup 10y ago
I've been kicking around the idea of dry; maybe I'll try it this weekend so that if it is gross I can shampoo.
I do use a no-sulfate shampoo & that has really helped with softness.
margerym 10y ago
Do let me know how it works for you. I've been curious about it for one of my kiddos that has straight hair prone to oiliness.
[deleted] 10y ago
Agree with this 100%, whenever I see a woman cut all her hair off attraction is definitely lowered.
